2PM’s Taecyeon Describes Ideal Girl to Girls’ Generation’s Sunny on “Roommate”

On the November 9 episode of SBS variety show “Roommate,” Nana, Sunny, and Lee Gook Joo went on a trip to the cafe strip of Samcheongdong and planned to arrange blind dates for each of them.

After Lee Gook Joo said that she’s feeling lonely nowadays, hinting that she wants to go on a date, Sunny decided to match her with one of her friends. Sunny then called her friend, 2PM’s Taecyeon.

Not knowing that Taecyeon’s currently overseas, Sunny called the singer who immediately picked up the phone. “I’m in Phuket,” said Taecyeon to Sunny. Sunny then asked Taecyeon what his ideal girl is like and Taecyeon replied, “Somebody who eats well, isn’t picky, and has a cute side to her.” After hearing this, Lee Gook Joo immediately said, “That’s me, exactly.”

Lee Gook Joo then asked Taecyeon to come over to the show and Taecyeon replied, “Isn’t (my labelmate) Jackson already there?,” hinting that he doesn’t need to go anymore.

After talking with Taecyeon, Sunny remarked, “Taking a phone call even when he’s on roaming is truly a sign of our friendship. It’s loyalty,” implying that she and Taecyeon are really close.

Three Meals a Day, Meokbang, and the Korean Food Trend

20141113_seoulbeats_threemealsaday

Ratings with more than 6% for a cable television channel are very rare. Crossing that threshold means that a show is officially a sensation. So if a tvN cooking-eating cable variety show reached 8.3% in ratings, no one could deny that it is simply crazy.

Na PD — the genius behind 2 Days 1 Night and the Over Flowers series — is responsible for coming out with this smashing hit; Three Meals a Day. The idea is to put actor Lee Seo-jin and 2PM member Taecyeon in a secluded village house and ask them to cook anything and eat those meals three times a day. Little that he knew, his simple idea has sent Korean audiences into a frenzy.

However, Three Meals a Day and its food-centric theme is not an isolated incident. In fact, the show is only the tip of recent cooking and dining shows that have hit the small screen throughout this year. It started off when KBS2 introduced The King of Food featuring Shin Dong-yup, then O’liveTV aired Korean’s equivalent of MasterChefThe Battle of Korean Cuisine — with some success. The Battle of Korean Cuisine managed to hit 1.7% ratings, a considerable amount for a small specialized cable station such as O’liveTV. Now, SBS and KBS are also cashing on this trend with planned cooking battle shows, Cooking Korea and Miss Korea respectively.

Why has this sudden appetite for food programs emerged, and what does it mean?

Well, first, there are changes in terms of demographics in Korean society. The proportion of single-person households drastically increased to 35.9 percent in 2013 from about 9 percent in 1990, according to Korean Statistics. It represents a changing culture in Korea where many people have to eat meals alone. However, Korean culture does not look upon eating alone too favorably. Cultural critics say that those who live alone feel loneliness and find more vicarious pleasure by seeing someone eating. This is the way for audiences to alleviate a sense of “alienation.” While they are watching these shows, they feel connected and feel that they are not eating alone anymore.

(skipped unrelated.....)

It is the same case with variety Three Meals a Day. The show isn’t about simply cooking and eating; it’s a bit more then that. It is about two guys with no family connection whatsoever forming a bond through eating and cooking together. It is that sense of shared efforts for food, and it also happens to bring laughter in the process. Perhaps, that feel-good atmosphere in creating and sharing food that has Korean audiences tuning in to watch every Friday night.

Lee Soo-kyung, Yoon Doo-joon, Lee Seo-jin, and Taecyeon are lucky enough to have met one other and share the same passion for food, but the question now is how about other Koreans who cannot find friends to share meals with? Well, more and more Korean people have found the solution online, specifically tuning in to live streaming TV channels where they watch other people eat. This has led to the growing culture of meokbang. Meokbang is an ongoing online trend of watching hosts or broadcasting jockeys (BJs) eating food with much vicariousness on live stream. These BJs, who can earn up to $9,000 per month, eat $100 worth of dinner in front of their thousands of viewers each and every night. Meokbang, which literally means “eating well on screen,” has transformed eating from an individual act to a social platform for all of society to watch. These BJs and their online viewers might eat alone in the physical space, but through the virtual world they are sharing and eating at the same table face to face.

2PM’s Taecyeon and Lee Seo Jin Brighten Up at Go Ara’s Presence in ‘Three Meals’’
CJ E&M enewsWorld Ko Hong Ju  Translation Credit : Yeawon Jung

Go Ara brightened up the garden on Three Meals.
Prior to airing an episode on November 21, the production team of tvN’s Three Meals released a set of pictures showing Lee Seo Jin and 2PM’s Taecyeon sharing moments with Go Ara. The photos reflect the filming site’s harmonious atmosphere that is clearly different from before.
Go Ara makes a bright atmosphere with her smile in one photo while in another, Lee Seo Jin is smiling as he is cooking along with Taecyeon and Go Ara. In another, Taecyeon is unable to meet eyes with Go Ara as she is talking to him in front of the fireplace.
The preview that aired last week foreshadowed Go Ara’s appearance, gathering the viewers’ attention. Unlike the previous guests, who were people who have personal connections with Lee Seo Jin and Taecyeon, Go Ara, who has no special connections with them, entered the town. Lee Seo Jin grumbled, “Are you crazy?” to the staff members but was unable to hide his smile, bringing out laughter. Taecyeon also caught attention by voluntarily picking up tasks for the sake of Go Ara, increasing anticipation for the upcoming episode.

The production team said, “Lee Seo Jin and Ok Taecyeon definitely acted differently when they filmed with Go Ara, compared to when guests who have personal connections to them, such as Kim Kwang Kyu and Ryu Seung Soo, appeared. The episode will be entertaining as it will feature Lee Seo Jin, who was mean to Ryu Seung Soo, gently talking to Go Ara and Ok Taecyeon, who is unable to hide his shyness and is made fun of by being called ‘Ok bingu.’”
Go Ara will be showing herself as a mukbang goddess, presenting her monstrous appetite despite her pretty face. An affiliate of Three Meals said, “Another thing to watch out for will be Go Ara experiencing ‘hell.’”
Three Meals is set to air on November 21 at 9:50 p.m. (KST)

[Past And Present] The Owner of Okcat, Taecyeon
Source: BNTNews

[by Woorim Ahn] Ok Taecyeon is the real name of Taecyeon of 2PM. He was born on December 27, 1988 in Busan, Korea. He moved to Bedford, Massachusetts when he was 10 years old with his family and lived there for 7 years. He auditioned for JYP Entertainment (JYP) in New York City and headed to Korea for further competition.
After he went through survival program by JYP ‘Superstar Survival’, he finally made his debut as a member of 2PM on September 4, 2008. His part in the group is a rapper with his teammate Chansung. Since he is a rapper, he featured in several artists’ albums – ‘Yes I’m in Love’ by Bada and ‘My Ear’s Candy’ by Baek Ji Young.
Moreover, he didn’t stop making his career as a singer. He started acting with drama ‘Cinderella’s Sister’ in 2010, then he appeared in Dream High in 2011. Taecyeon also showed up in reality program ‘We Got Married’ global edition with Taiwanese actress Emma Wu.
Taecyeon made such a big decision, which was to give up American permanent residence, to join Korean army (Koreans must join 2-year military service since it’s one of duties on the national law). Although his body condition didn’t allow him to serve, he revealed his desire to take another physical examination to fulfill the appropriate condition to join the service.

Here are two photos of Taecyeon taken in 2011 and 2014. The left picture was taken at the filming site of his drama 'Dream High' and the right one was taken at the photo wall of 2014 KBS Music Festival.
Taecyeon is fairly well-known as fashion terrorist (for those who are really bad at making styles), but recently he shows great styles in public. Although three years have been passed, his look remains still the same. (photo by bntnews DB)
