"I am happy. If you count the time I spent researching the character, I spent over a year with Baek Hyun-woo, but I feel both regretful and disappointed. I am also very thankful for the time I was able to meet the best actors. Thanks to this, I was able to not lose focus on the incredibly emotional scenes, and I feel like it was a truly special piece of work.I hope you were happy while watching 'Queen of Tears'. Thank you to everyone who watched, and I also thank the writers, directors, all the staff, seniors, and actors who worked together to make it."

*** Knowing the writer Park Ji-eun, she  has never written sad endings for her previous works, so I expected “Queen of Tears” to also end happily. However, I was one who felt disappointed after watching episode 16 but, happy at the same time. The drama ended by showing her grave revealing her death in 2074. It’s indeed a happy ending but to wrap a drama with the main character’s death is my first time to watch in a K-drama. It's happy-ending but I can’t believe it’s an ending with a grave.   :cutekitty:

[NEWS] HSAD has created a ‘queen-level collaboration’ with Hanwha Insurance and Homeplus, featuring their advertising models Kim Soo Hyun and Kim Jiwon.

KJW: Hey there~ Are you there?

KSH: Hello~ I'm here!

KJW: How about we give it a try?

KSH: I’ll make your life enjoyable forever!

KJW: I’ll be your strength!

KSH: I’ll take care of you even more!

Starting from April 26th, just before the finale of Queen of Tears, HSAD showcased a marketing creative on the LED screens at Hongdae Station. If you look at the two ads separately, they seem like individual brand ads, but when viewed side by side, they create an effect as if the drama characters are having a conversation.

This collaboration ad spread quickly on social media and online, generating various reactions like ‘unimaginable collaboration’, ‘crazy idea’, ‘makes sense separately and together’, and ‘ad agency’s sense is crazy, advertisers are all smiles’. As Queen of Tears starring the two actors kept breaking viewership records every week, HSAD executed this collaboration ad to maximize synergy between the drama and the ad campaign. This was possible because HSAD was managing both Hanwha Insurance and Homeplus brands at the same time.

Queen of Tears 2nd Wrap Up Party

@Magician  thanks for sharing this. It's always so NICE to see a drama having a wrap-up party since this is the chance where the staff and actors gather in one place to praise their hard work and celebrate the success of a drama project. I heard it from my K-friend that (referring to the 1st wrap-up party) as so many fans flocked to the party venue, traffic in the area became paralyzed as cars could not enter or pass nearby parking lots. True, because we saw pictures of fans standing on the other side of the road, they cheered loudly when the actors appeared. Especially, the loud shouts became much louder for Kim Soo-hyun and Kim Ji-won. I saw a fan commented that she noticed Kim Soo-hyun’s cheeks were so red when he went out after the party. I guess he must have drunk alcohol and enjoyed the party so much.   :emmm:

'Queen of Tears' finale sets record viewership ratings as tvN's most-watched series ending

20240429050586_0.jpg

The final episode of "Queen of Tears" aired Sunday, achieving tvN's highest viewership ratings for an episode to date, surpassing the ratings recorded by the cable channel's other hit series, including "Crash Landing on You" (2020) and "Guardian: The Lonely and Great God" (2017).

According to tvN, the final episode of "Queen of Tears" logged an average viewership rating of 28.4 percent in the Seoul metropolitan area and 24.9 percent nationwide.

"While also satisfying the tastes of domestic audiences, 'Queen of Tears' met every standard set by global audiences for K-romance," said Jung Duk-hyun, a pop culture critic.

"Furthermore, the success of 'Queen of Tears' can be credited to the extensive fanbase of K-actors Kim Soo-hyun and Kim Ji-won, as well as the show's main screenwriter, Park Ji-eun, who is popular in Asia. Her previous works, like 'Crash Landing on You,' have earned her recognition in Japan, while 'My Love From the Star' achieved widespread acclaim in China," Jung added. The last episode of "Crash Landing on You" (2020) logged a local viewership rating of 21.6 percent.

Kim Soo-hyun, who played the male lead in "Queen of Tears," is reportedly considering a role in the black comedy series, "Knock Off," helmed by Park Hyun-suk, the director of tvN's second season of "Stranger." ARC Media and SLL, which previously produced the Disney+ original "Casino" and the U+ Mobile TV original "High Cookie," will produce the drama series, according to reports.

Female lead Kim Ji-won's next project has not yet been disclosed, while Park Sung-hoon, the actor behind the drama series' main villain, is scheduled to appear in the second season of the Netflix original, "Squid Game," set to be released in the fourth quarter of 2024.

Meanwhile, the last two episodes of "Queen of Tears" sparked backlash for their slow and unrealistic plot development, with Baek Hyeon-woo (Kim Soo-hyun) becoming involved in a series of misfortunes such as dismissal from his job, assassination attempts by hired thugs and a traffic accident, all in the last two episodes.

All 16 episodes of "Queen of Tears" are currently available for streaming on Netflix and Tving. Two more special episodes titled, "Queen of Tears: Miraculous Records.zip," are scheduled to air on tvN on Saturday and Sunday.

'Queen of Tears' snags 24.9 percent rating in record-breaking finale

“Queen of Tears,” the latest tvN romance drama series starring Kim Soo-hyun and Kim Ji-won, ended with a 24.9 percent viewership rating on Sunday, the highest for the cable channel.

The ratings surpassed the previous record held by “Crash Landing on You” (2019-20) featuring actors Son Ye-jin and Hyun Bin, which achieved a rating of 21.7 percent with its finale.

“Queen of Tears” follows the story of Hong Hae-in — a third-generation heiress from a chaebol, or conglomerate, family to a chain of department stores — and her husband of three years, Baek Hyun-woo, who works as a lawyer for Hong’s family’s company. The drama shows the ups and downs of the couple's marital troubles, as well as a heartwarming story of family, while a feud between conglomerates rages in the background.

Actor Kim Soo-hyun made his return to the small screen after three years as Baek, while actor Kim Ji-won stars as privileged and sharp businessperson Hong.

The series started strong thanks to the two stars' reputations as well as a storyline that seemed new and refreshing — at first.

Though the show ended on a record-breaking high, it also drew criticism audiences for including cliché motifs that are often used in Korean dramas, such as terminal illness, memory loss and car accident tropes.

Viewers, for instance, disapproved of a scene where Baek miraculously survives a car accident, calling it an “unnecessary scene” that did nothing for the plot.

“An accident? Again?” a commentator asked on X, formerly Twitter. "'Queen of Tears' would not be out of place if it was aired in the early 2000s,” another viewer said.

Meanwhile, Kim Soo-hyun thanked the show’s fans in a video uploaded to Netflix’s K-Content YouTube channel, which was recorded ahead of the finale’s airing on Sunday. The actor has clenched a Best Actor nomination for his role in “Queen of Tears” at the upcoming Baeksang Arts Awards, which will take place on May 7.

'Queen of Tears' shatters tvN drama viewership record with final episode

a018bca2-f062-481b-931f-c36782d30728.jpg

Excessive cliches, forced sentimental ending divide viewers

By KTimes

The tvN drama "Queen of Tears" concluded its run with a record-breaking finale, achieving the highest viewership ratings ever for a drama on the network.

According to Nielsen Korea on Monday, the final episode, which aired on the evening of April 28, garnered a 24.9 percent viewership rating. This figure surpasses the previous record held by the finale of "Crash Landing on You," which aired on Feb. 16, 2020, and recorded a rating of 21.7 percent.

In the dramatic finale, despite being in a traffic accident, Baek Hyun-woo (played by Kim Soo-hyun) relentlessly searches for the kidnapped Hong Hae-in (played by Kim Ji-won). The two reunite at a villa, where Hae-in was escaping from Yoon Eun-sung (played by Park Sung-hoon).

The tension peaked when an enraged Eun-sung, upon being definitively rejected by Hae-in, declared he would take her even if it meant killing her. In a pivotal moment, Hyun-woo is shot while protecting Hae-in. Eun-sung, while reloading his gun, is ultimately shot dead by police.

Mo Seul-hee (played by Lee Mi-sook) ends up in prison as evidence of her involvement in the murder of Hong Man-dae (played by Kim Kap-soo) surfaces. Ownership of Queens Group reverts to its rightful owners.

The drama also made a significant impact internationally, topping Netflix's Global TOP10 Non-English series for the week of March 25 to 31, with a total viewership of 93.8 million hours.

It ranked in the top 10 in 68 countries, including the U.S., Canada, Japan, Australia and India. TIME magazine praised "Queen of Tears," highlighting its fresh approach to the familiar themes of K-dramas.

Controversy over forced ending

However, the finale's use of excessive clichés and a forced sentimental ending has divided viewers.

Viewers have debated the plausibility and overuse of clichés, such as the amnesia plot line — where Hae-in miraculously recovers her memory through the power of love — and scenes depicting the Queens family being defenseless against their adversaries, both of which have become all too familiar in Korean dramas.

Additionally, the final episode featured an elderly Baek Hyun-woo visiting Hong Hae-in's grave 50 years after her death, which, rather than being touching, left some viewers puzzled.

For Kim Soo-hyun, "Queen of Tears" marked a triumphant return to television after three years, becoming a critical moment in his career following the less successful "One Day."

For Kim Ji-won, the drama solidified her status as a leading figure in entertainment, with numerous endorsement deals reportedly in the works following the show's conclusion.

*** A Korean fan researched and discovered that the Queen of Tears title was registered for copyright as early as 2010.  The script must have been in the works for over a decade. According to a fan, the 2010 K-Drama Queen of Reversals, starring Kim Nam Joo, Jung Joon Ho, Park Si Hoo, and Chae Jung An, was initially titled Queen of Tears. Park Ji Eun wrote both Queen of Reversals and Queen of Tears.  - hahaha - So, it seems that Park Ji Eun likely had copyrighted a handful of K-Dramas with “Queen of” titles.  :Megalol:
