Every time I see Gong Hyo Jin I'm reminded her and her beautiful little family living on the Blue Island in Thank You. :) I wonder how things are going for them? Is 'Dr. Min' in charge of his own clinic or hospital? How is our little 'Lee Bom' doing in school? Is pretty 'Young Shin' the mother of another child, or two? :D Some characters can build a place in your heart that never, ever leave you... -_-

I love when real-life couples act as couples in acting projects; that meta awareness adds just a little something extra to the cute. Such is the case with this couple, who are not only adorable together but talented to boot — Gong Hyo-jin (Pasta) and Ryu Seung-beom (No Mercy) — and who have teamed up to endorse a cell phone.

The product is a Motorola brand smart phone, Motorola Defy. [...]

In any case, Ryu and Gong traveled to a Gangwon-do ski resort to shoot the above ad, which demonstrates the concept of being able to engage in active sports while carrying the smart phone on your person. The tagline reads, “It’s okay, because it’s Defy!” [...]

Gong Hyo-jin publishes environmental essays

Gong Hyo-jin (Pasta) joins the ranks of actor-authors by publishing an essay book, which will be released this month.

The collection is called Gong Book [공책], which is a play on her own surname and the word for “notebook,” and is themed around environmental topics. In it, Gong discusses her interest and thoughts about the environment, her everyday life, and personal insights.

She explained, “I’m not an environmental specialist, and compared to environmental activists I’m just a baby who’s barely taken her first step. What I want to say in this book is that even imperfect, little things, when if they’re done together with greater numbers, they can achieve great things. And that I may be imperfect, but the things I worry about and try to put into practice are things I want to do with more people. I wanted to talk about these things frankly.”

I… can’t say anything nice about the book cover, so I won’t say anything at all. But props to Gong for tackling a timely topic with her project. A lot of times these actor books seem like vanity projects — no judgment, just pointing out that they are often diary-like affairs about their personal lives, which can be a lot of fun for the actors’ fans, I’m sure. But I also appreciate when they have other things to say.

Gong’s book will be published on December 13.

Excerpted from Lee Seon-Gyun's 10Asia interview:

2010120817135673463_3.jpg

10: Well you probably get good marks for every romantic drama you star in because you have good chemistry with the actresses.

Lee: There really isn't anything that I do in particular. And it’s not like I treat them particularly well. I’ve just been lucky in getting to work with good actresses. For example, [Kong] Hyo-jin really didn’t spend much time preparing for her role in “Pasta” but she was really good. It’s extraordinary in that it didn't seem like she looks at her script a lot and was always playing with her i-Phone but would do an amazing job with her scenes as she goes into shoot. It was to the extent that I was shocked. That’s why she’s a good actress. From how I see it, all that you really need to do is an honest and natural job with your acting. If my acting is honest and natural, my scene partner will give me back something that's also honest and natural. That’s also how you can make things more fun.

10: And it was because of how natural you guys looked in “Pasta” that people said you two really might be dating. (laugh)

Lee: My wife told me she had heard that from someone. How funny is that? (laugh) You need time to actually be able to date someone... but I had a lot of lines for the scenes in the kitchen. I sometimes didn't think I’d be able to memorize all the lines I had been given because we’d sometimes shoot several scenes from the kitchen in one go. I sometimes felt that it was unfair that I’d have to talk away when everyone else didn’t have that many lines to say. I wanted to say or do something to the ones who would playing with their i-Phones. (laugh)

Kong Hyo-jin

"She was silent yet strong. Of all the main female characters who are troublesome, behave tactlessly, or are passive, who else could have portrayed the average working and maturing woman in such a loveable way?" --Lee Ji-hye/Reporter

Excerpted from [2010 10Asia's Awards] Drama & Director of the Year:

MBC Pasta

"Of the shower of dramas this year, the drama in which the acting, emotions and details harmonize the best. More than anything, a drama which expressed everyday life most naturally." --Kim Kyo-suk/TV Critic

Kwon Seok-jang of MBC Pasta

"The acting and script may have played a big role in allowing "Pasta" to casually unravel the issue of balancing work and love but it was the director who mediated everything in a natural way." --Kim Sun-young/TV Critic

"The show's director is the reason that "Pasta" was able to go beyond being just a simple melodrama and portray the kitchen as an intense battlefield while reflecting on organizations and leadership." --Choi Ji-eun/Reporter

Excerpted from [2010 10Asia's Awards] "Thank You" List:

Foxy Girl of the Year

MBC Pasta: Seo Yoo-kyung

2010121008571402971_5.jpg

She pretended to not notice when chef Choi Hyun-wook (Lee Sun-kyun) openly flirted with her. But then she made physical contact with him by asking him to take out a key from her coat for her. She pretended she knows nothing about relationships. But it was she who surprise-kissed him in the elevator, not the other way around. She pretended she did not know anything about pushing buttons. But when Choi asked her to choose between him and her cooking career she replied with glee, “You of course, chef!” only to turn around later to speak up with confidence “I can see right through you and can tell how much you like me!” Yoo-kyung (Kong Hyo-jin) of MBC drama “Pasta (2010)” was the shrewdest fox in disguise. The skills of seduction displayed by female leads in the drama seem to improve every day. There should be some kind of lecture set up for this.

Lee Sun-kyun and Gong Hyo-jin win Best Couple

...at the 2010 MBC Drama Awards.

Many couples were nominated in the category. The couple from “Pasta” beat Lee Min-ho & Son Ye-jin (“Personal Taste“), Ji Jin-hee & Han Hyo-joo (“Dong Yi“), Jung Jun-ho & Kim Nam-joo (“Queen of Reversals“), and Kim Hyun-joong & Jung So-min (“Playful Kiss“).

On stage, Gong Hyo-jin started off with a witty comment stating, “Shall we say thank you together, Chef?” She thanked the fans and viewers of “Pasta“, while Lee Sun-kyun thanked Gong Hyo-jin and the PD of the drama for his impulsive(?) casting of the two (angry thinking that the two won’t look good together).

Congratulations to the cute couple!

Gong Hyo Jin Talks about Gil Ra Im of Secret Garden

"Actress Ha Ji Won is absolutely cut out for the character Gil Ra Im in Secret Garden," said Gong Hyo Jin, the lead actress of cooking drama Pasta, in SBS FM Radio "Love Game."

Gong was invited to the radio channel as a guest of "All About Stars with Keywords." When the host asked "What if you were playing Gil Ra Im of Secret Garden," she answered, "For starters I'm a big fan of Secret Garden, and Ha Ji Won is absolutely amazing in her acting the stunt woman Gil Ra Im. To play the character she should be proficient in all the wire action and Ha Ji Won is well-trained to perform the role. If I were doing all the dangerous stunts, I would have made drama staff staying all night exhausted." Gong Hyo Jin's candid remark was well-received by her fans and other Internet users. [...]

Kong Hyo-jin’s Notebook

Kong Hyo-jin; Bookhouse: 256 pp., 12,800 won

Model, actor and fashionista Kong Hyo-jin has released a book titled “Notebook.” While many celebrities have written essays about their lives both in and out of the spotlight, Kong has chosen a bit more inclusive topic for her fans: the environment. Yes, this book may have a lot of photos of herself, her dog and her surroundings, but the fundamental goal is informing readers on how to preserve the environment and live a greener life.

“It may be hard to think of the environment when you talk about actresses. But I thought the small steps I take with other people can become a great achievement in the future,” Kong wrote in the preface.

This book won’t satisfy those looking for in-depth and long term ways in saving the earth, as this book is rather light, practical and simple. Instead of approaching ways of becoming green in a burdensome and troublesome way, Kong presents easy ideas, such as skipping shampoo once in a while, shopping at flea markets and using rechargeable batteries, plus offers a look inside her personal lifestyle habits.

Australia and Korea fete 50 years of ties and friendship

Banquet at Hyatt attracts politicians and celebrities

January 31, 2011

The Australian Embassy in Seoul celebrated the 50th anniversary of a diplomatic relationship between Australia and Korea, dubbed the “Australia-Korea Year of Friendship,” at the Grand Hyatt Seoul on Wednesday, with roughly 2,000 participants including high-profile government officials, celebrities, and foreign officials.

In a congratulatory speech, Australian Ambassador Sam Gerovich described the Year of Friendship and his desire to deepen ties with Korea in the future.

“In March 2009, when President Lee Myung-bak last visited Australia, the Australian and Korean Governments agreed to mark this milestone by designating 2011 as the ‘Australia-Korea Year of Friendship,’ ” the ambassador said.

“The Year of Friendship is aimed to underline the achievements of diplomatic ties between Korea and Australia, and increase public awareness of the bilateral relationship over the past 50 years.”

The ambassador said the official diplomatic ties were established in 1961, but the first interaction between the two countries started in 1889 when Australian missionaries paid a visit to Busan and Masan, South Gyeongsang. During the 1950-1953 Korean War, 17,164 Australian soldiers were dispatched and 339 died in Korea; 281 are buried in the U.N. Memorial Park in Busan.

“Over the past 50 years, Australia and Korea have built a close and firmly-based partnership,” he said. “Korea is, for example, Australia’s third-largest merchandise export market, with our two larger markets, China and Japan, having much larger populations. Korea is also the third largest source of international students in Australia behind only China and India. Around 35,000 Korean students studied in Australia last year. Korean tourists are also very important to the Australian economy.

“We also share with Korea a broad range of common security and diplomatic interests and challenges,” he continued. “We have a vested national stake in continuing peace and stability of the region, including here on the Korean Peninsula.”

After the ambassador’s speech, the National Assembly Speaker Park Hee-tae and First Vice Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Mo Chul-min delivered speeches. Korean actor Park Keun-hyong and actress Kong Hyo-jin were officially appointed as Australian Goodwill Ambassadors.

Starting with a performance by “Consonant Ensemble,” a group comprised of four female Korean migrants who flew in from Sydney, a variety of performances entertained the attendees.

David Palmer, chairman of the Australia-Korea Foundation, expressed his hope for enhanced trade with Korea in the beef market.

“Australian beef is very important to the Korean economy,” he said. “We think Australian beef adds a complementary role to help provide a critical mass of beef protein to 45 million Korean consumers.”

At a press conference held at the Plaza Hotel, central Seoul, on Jan.19, the Australian ambassador said he hoped the Australian and Korean governments will sign a Free Trade Agreement within this year.

“Although some sensitive issues still remain in the agriculture sector, I hope bilateral relations in trade will be developed by signing a Free Trade Agreement,” the ambassador said.

When it comes to cooperation with Korea in green energy policies, the embassy said research centers in Australia and Korea that study carbon capture and sequestration projects are expected to work together at the academic level.

Australian climate change activist and paleontologist Tim Flannery will visit Seoul to talk about environmental issues this year.

The embassy also said that two Australian Nobel Prize winners, Peter Charles Doherty and Barry James Marshall, will visit Korea this year to give talks.

The embassy has started a Web site (http://australiakorea50.com) to publicize events related to the Year of Friendship and also has an application for iPhone users.
