Ssak 3 bids farewell, Refund Expedition says hello

Superstar trio Ssak 3 bid farewell to fans, as the group wrapped up its three-month project on Saturday’s episode of MBC’s “Hangout With Yoo.”

During the Saturday, the trio of entertainer Yoo Jae-seok and singers Lee Hyo-ri and Rain thanked fans and each other while also expressing regret at not being able to meet fans in-person because of the coronavirus situation.

“We actually formed Ssak 3 to meet all the people here, but we couldn’t. That’s why our project remains incomplete,” said Yoo as he read fan letters. Yoo added his wish to make a comeback in the winter with a ski resort theme that is also reminiscent of the 1990s.

“So lovable … two elders … thank you … good work B-ryong,” Rain posted via Instagram on Sunday.

Ssak 3, just like the meaning of the group’s name, swept the summer music charts with songs reminiscent of the 1990s. Continuing the popular retro trend, their songs especially appealed to Koreans in their 30s and 40s, bringing back memories of their youth.

Ssak 3’s “Beach Again” reached the top of various music charts following its release on July 18, and still reigns at the top of many charts. Solo songs by each of the three members as well as their remix of “In Summer” are also popular. “Beach Again” placed atop both Mnet’s “M Countdown” and MBC’s “Show! Music Core,” while the official music video had reached over 7.4 million views on YouTube as of Monday.

As the group announced an end to their summer journey, a preview of the next episode showed a teaser for Refund Expedition, a new group project for “Hangout With Yoo.”

The group was first brought up by Lee in an episode of “Hangout With Yoo” in June, when she jokingly expressed a desire to gather female singers with strong personalities. Uhm responded with an Instagram post after the show aired asking if she should get ready, to which Hwasa and Jessi also commented.

“Compared to Ssak 3, people in Refund Expedition don’t listen,” said Lee on Saturday’s episode. “Yoo Jae-seok and Rain are softies compared to Jessi.”

Netizen created content helps to resurrect waning stars

By Park Ji-won

It's no exaggeration that the first decade of the new millennium was a golden age for multitalented entertainer Jung Ji-hoon. Performing under the stage name Rain, the singer-songwriter, actor and music producer was seen almost everywhere. His songs swept music charts, and he starred in popular TV series. Rain's acting career seemed to reach a peak when his venture into Hollywood films succeeded.

The splendid decade became a past glory for Rain in the 2010s when he returned to show business following a two-year hiatus for his mandatory military service which was tainted with his "abuse" of perks as an entertainment soldier. His endeavors to regain past glories were impeded by various obstacles.

The 2019 film "Race to Freedom: Uhm Bok-dong" starring Rain was withdrawn from theaters shortly after it premiered due to its poor reception ― it attracted a mere 170,000 cinemagoers. His music albums didn't do well, either. Many were skeptical about a rebound for his career.

However, Rain was able to roar again into the entertainment industry after he participated in SSAK 3, a one-off project group, which has been sweeping the music charts with retro-concept songs. The group has since appeared in multiple commercials.

Behind the sudden rebound is netizen-created content and the ensuing back-and-forth dialogue on this (which one Korean blogger called "playing with comments"). In the digital age, fans not only follow their idols but also exert a great deal of influence that can help or hinder their careers. Through online comments or video clips shared with other internet users, they promote waning or forgotten stars back into the limelight, helping their careers rise again.

Witty comments, hilarious parody videos and other supportive content add to and enhance their idol's presence.

Rain's 2017 music video "Gang," for example, was quickly forgotten. But some fans revisited it last year, leaving lots of thumbs-ups and comments. Some of them were satirical mocking the superstar's out-of-date performance and lyrics ― one wrote: "It is perfectly unfashionable, multi-dimensionally wrong and thoroughly shameful."

A so-called reaction video has accumulated more than 4.1 million views over the past three months.

Experts point out that this form of critique is a new way to enjoy content especially among the younger generation with YouTube channels. These people aim to be consumers and trendsetters or creators at the same time, by playing a role in resurfacing older content.

"On YouTube, young people are creating a culture. They dig unique old content, which is not made under the influence of large capital, and create their parody videos while sharing them with others through social media. Their recreation of digital content, albeit crude, is a form of recreation and a popular activity in itself," culture critic Ha Jae-geun told The Korea Times, Tuesday.

"The re-creation of certain content by internet users proves that it's meaningless to talk about when the content was made, meaning there are more chances for old content to be rediscovered… But when the content starts to be consumed by major media outlets, its value becomes meaningless again because it is not rare anymore for the young consumers, who value the uniqueness of individuals over all else."

*** News confirmed that RAIN appeared as the fifth original singer to record JTBC's entertainment program "Hidden Singer 6" on 17 August. Announcement of his appearance raised great expectations on his showdown with the impersonators. RAIN’s “Hidden Singer 6” is scheduled to air on September 4. Looking forward to this.

Park Jin-young tried to persuade Rain, but now he is "slapped" by the "GANG" retrograde fever

129455-867818.jpg

Park Jin-young who appeared in "Radio Star" last week, was asked what he thought of Rain's "GANG" when it was first released.

129455-867813.jpg

Park Jinyoung replied: "I thought about it seriously at the time, and I felt that this was not good."

129455-867817.jpg

Park Jinyoung replied in "You Quiz on the Block": "I became embarrassed at first but, after the release of "GANG", I persuaded Rain very seriously for several hours, and told him that this was not acceptable. I think the word “GANG” on the 1st place will be a joke.”

Rain took a snack CF with "GANG", Park Jinyoung said: "The CF is good...& I wanted to have dinner with him.” Park Jinyoung bowed his head in shame, embarrassed to see Rain.

朴軫永當初苦口婆心勸Rain,如今卻被《GANG》的逆行大熱「打臉」XD

上周出演《RadioStar》的朴軫永被問到,RainGANG》當初發表的時候怎麼看待的。雖然時間上《RS》先播出,但是錄《RS》之前先錄製了《You Quiz On The Block,所以朴軫永難堪道:「《You Quiz》也問了這個問題。

*** The guitarist made a small mistake at the beginning, which made RAIN laughed. But he quickly explained to the viewers: He said -

"You all noticed I was out of my mind just now. These two have been wearing a mask for over 2 hours and they were quite stifled. A sauna place is not for performance. As I said just now, I felt like that smashed peppers were pasted to my nasal mucous membrane. My nose hurt. Please understand it’s not because the guitarist was nervous. It’s because her nose hurt. "

He is always such a warm, caring and considerate gentleman! Despite such hot and humid environment he delivered a great live performance. It was just enjoyable reading all the complimentary comments as watching him sing! He gave a lovely and fun twist with the lyrics at the end.

"No matter how hard I run away, the sauna room was still beside me. It’s so hot, I almost die, but the production team continues to make me....."

And he couldn’t continue - LOL Please watch the official YouTube video and subscribe to Season B Season.

5+ Korean Celebrities Who Got Unfairly Criticized By Netizens This Year

Some of these are just ridiculous.

2020 has been a crazy year for Korean celebrities, as plenty of them have gotten criticized by netizens for some absurd reasons. Here’s a list of some Korean celebrities who got unfairly criticized by netizens this year.

4. The members of SSAK3

SSAK3 is a group comprised of members Yoo Jae Suk, Rain, and Lee Hyori. The group ended up topping music charts with their debut song “Beach Again”. Not only that, but the group also shared that they would be donating all of their profit to people in need.

However, the group was met with some unexpected hate from netizens, as they believed that SSAK3 was taking away opportunities from other singers, making comments like, “It’s not a fair game since they’ve already claimed all of the recognition and awareness from the public“.

Other netizens came in to defend SSAK3, making comments like, “Consumers aren’t stupid. If the songs are good, they listen to the songs no matter who the artist is“.
