[K-Drama Review] ‘Ghost Doctor’: Two Reasons We Can’t Help But Fall for This Medical Bromance Drama

 

 

What if a doctor possessed by a ghost performs operations? This theme, which we can’t even think of in reality, has become a story with laughter. tvN’s Ghost Doctor is that drama. When an arrogant genius doctor Cha Young Min (Rain) lapses into unconsciousness after a car accident, his soul goes into the body of resident Go Seung Tak (Kim Bum), who has zero sense of duty. With just four episodes remaining, we take a look at the two reasons that make us fall in love with the drama.

Fun Created by Two Very Opposite Themes

Ghost Doctor has combined the medical genre with surreal fantasy. These two genres, which are the complete opposite of each other, are showing good synergy, creating appropriate fun and emotions. The drama follows the exciting process of Cha Young Min’s soul entering Go Seung Tak’s body and uncovering a huge conspiracy taking place in the hospital. The element of “possession” acts as an important device, and the unpredictable episodes derived from the process doubles the fun of the series. This setting especially stands out in surgical scenes.

 

Despite the absurd plot of someone’s soul and the body of an alive person becoming one,  the two characters’ seriousness towards the medicine creates tension. 

 

 

Another attractive feature of Ghost Doctor is that it conveys a sense of exhilaration by focusing on the awesome performances of the main characters and shows less of the “dragging” elements that could tire the viewers. Since ghosts are invisible to humans, they can enter anywhere they want at any time. Young Min, who has now become a ghost, sees and hears the plot Han Seung Won (Tae In Ho), a villain in the play and the head of the hospital administration, has come up with to kill him. So no matter how smart of a plan Han Seung Won comes up with, Young Min in Seung Tak’s body resolves the situation and even retaliates. This could halve the dramatic tension, but the vicarious satisfaction coming from the combination play of Cha Young Min and Go Seung Tak that deals a blow to a horde of villains is bigger.

The biggest attraction of Ghost Doctor is the so-called “possessing chemistry” between Cha Young Min and Go Seung Tak. Young Min tries to uncover the truth of the conspiracy that drove him to the brink of death through Seung Tak, and Seung Tak wants to save patients using Young Min’s brilliant surgical skills. These two, who are now on the same page, use each other to solve the problems in front of them one by one. Their attempts to take control continue, and every time, bizarre things happen, giving a big laugh. In particular, the fun is doubled in that these two characters’ personalities, status, and surgical skills are the exact opposite. 

 

But laughter isn’t the only thing this “possessing chemistry” offers. Before the accident, Young Min was a cold-hearted doctor that bustled patients in a coma out of the ward. However, when he finds himself in the same situation, he comes to understand them and changes more while watching Seung Tak, who may lack surgical skills but treats patients with sincerity. Seung Tak also gradually grows from an immature silver-spooned man to an actual doctor while performing operations with Young Min. The two, who join forces for their own purpose, have time to reflect on their shortcomings and look back on their lives through each other. The warm atmosphere conveyed in this process interlocks with the patients’ sad stories, bringing viewers to tears. 

 

 

Rain and Kim Bum’s performances are outstanding as if they are “attached” to the characters. Kim Bum portrays Seung Tak, who grows up as a doctor while interacting with Young Min, with sincerity and balances laughter and emotions. Rain shows the troubles and difficulties of Young Min, who became a ghost overnight, in a comical yet heartbreaking way, powerfully leading the story. And of course, Rain and Kim Bum show perfect bromance.

 

The story that progressed so smoothly started hitting a rough patch from the middle. It seems like it has lost its way after the truth about Young Min’s car accident, which has been a major part of the plot, was revealed. As the story focused on the romance between Young Min and his fellow doctor Jang Se Jin (Uee), who has been taking care of him, the thrilling fun shown in the first half got halved. It also has been pointed out that the lack of comical supporting characters is one of the regrets.

 

However, the tension spiked up by the end of episode 12 when Cha Young Min and Go Seung Tak’s “possessing surgery” faced a major crisis. Also, I wonder when Seung Tak will save a person with his own hands without Young Min’s help. We look forward to seeing what the two men’s medical bromance will show in the remaining episodes.

*** We all know that Ciipher's Tan (Ciipher) is part of "Ghost Doctor."He has been thrilling fans with his exceptional acting in the tvN series.  He has clearly impressed fans and viewers with his acting. The delivery of his lines, his range of emotions clearly portrayed, sharp wits, and especially his love-hate relationship with his boss, RAIN. Fans and viewers always seem to find their banter extremely funny as it almost feels too real. Comic relief aside, he is clearly a talented actor. I look forward to seeing him in more dramas.

*** "Ghost Doctor" EP14 is good. Go Seung Tak appeared at the hospital after he had officially decided that he wanted to become a doctor. He tells Cha Young Min about his plan and asks his help to train him to become a skilled doctor. He tells him to go back to the basics and study everything from scratch. He taught Go Seung Tak on how to stitch wounds properly and taught him to use both hands for operations.  Cha Young Min explained to Tess that this is also his way to pay back what he taught him. Cha Young Min and the whole E.R department witnessed his bravery when he managed to save a patient's life from cardiac arrest.

In new stills for the upcoming episode, Cha Young Min is lost in thought as he contemplates a difficult decision. Go Seung Tak is also in the scene, having a conversation with Jang Se Jin. In another still, Go Seung Tak and Oh Soo Jung (Son Naeun) exchange a sweet moment in the hospital, as he brings her a bunch of coffee and sweets, prompting curiosity about the reason behind his sudden gift.

*** Yesterday February 22, Rain held a video interview with Star News to commemorate the end of the tvN drama 'Ghost Doctor.'  During the interview, he said that he's hopeful that he will be appearing in an American project that was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. After appearing in the drama 'Welcome 2 Life', he auditioned for a project in the U.S., but his entry into the United States was canceled due to the spread of the COVID-19 virus. "I'm currently discussing these projects and I have a good feeling that I will be able to sign a contract. Before, I thought there are limitations of being a singer. However, that was only a difference in opinion. I think the concept changed. I still want to dance well so I control my diet and want to work out."  He also explained that he's not a naturally funny person and can't make people laugh. So, he thinks he was able to do entertainment program. He revealed that he wants to completely enter the variety program industry but is not yet confident. He explained, "Singers, dramas, and movies have become the center of the world. It's amazing. Actually, when I was on a world tour in 2005, I had a racial conflict. There were people who were prejudiced when seeing an Asian man trying to enter the American music market. Also in Korea, there was a prejudice that entry into the US will not be successful. Ultimately, amazing juniors are taking first place in the global market. Now, it seems so natural. I'm proud we're so successful in the 2020s."

*** I'm glad that it's a triumphant finale for tvN's "Ghost Doctor."  RAIN successfully wrapped up his comeback K-drama alongside Kim Bum, Uee and APINK's Son Naeun.  Now, I hope he is set to film an upcoming project in the U.S. soon for his next activity. During interview with Star News, Rain spoke about  Kim Tae Hee's thoughts regarding his drama comeback. It took two years for him to appear on the small screen again after the series "Welcome 2 Life." Rain  explained that his wife including the kids could watch the series due to its late timeslot.  As parting words for fans, he thanked the viewers for their overwhelming support.  He also expresses his gratitude towards Kim Bum, Uee and Son

As he prepares for his final surgery, Cha Young Min had a heart-to-heart talk with Tess (Sung Dong Il). Dr. Cha expressed his gratitude towards Tess. Tess tells Cha Young Min to remember the lessons he learned while being a coma ghost saying "Don't forget, Young-min, when you wake up, you become a doctor who sees people, okay? And the surgery goes well. Let's not see each other again." 

 

The d-day has come to Cha Young Min and Go Seung Tak as they are about to perform the procedure on the comatose Dr. Cha.  They faced a crisis after Cha Young Min was separated from Go Seung Tak's body during the operation.  However, he trusts Go Seung Tak that he could have wrapped up the operations alone, which he did.  Fortunately, the operation was successful, leaving fellow doctors at Eusang to rejoice, especially Go Seung Tak and Dr. Jang Se Jin (Uee).

 

Through the video that Cha Young Min recorded while he is inside Go Seung Tak's body, he was able to remember the things he did when he was a coma ghost and the memories he had with people around him.  With this, he was able to reconnect with Dr. Jang and build a unique friendship with Go Seung Tak. "Ghost Doctor" episode 16 also featured how Jang Se Jin proposed to Cha Young Min when he was in a coma.

I remember during the press conference, director Boo Sung Cheol shared what he really thinks of the two main stars. 

He says how Rain and Kim Bum "matched really well," noting that if Rain "is the engine, then Kim Bum is the headlights."

"Ghost Doctor" tells the story of Cha Young-min, an arrogant but genius doctor played by Rain, who encounters a rookie doctor Go Seung-Tak played by Kim Bum. The two of them have completely different life backgrounds, personalities and temperaments. The two compete against each other, resulting in a series of ironic stories. Although there was not much publicity after the show was launched, it set off a viewing craze with its compact plot and superb acting skills of the actors.
