‘Choi Soo-jong Meets Coffee’

One of Korea’s top actors, Choi Soo-jong, has joined hands with local franchise coffee house ‘Caffe Bene’ to help the company continue its sponsorship over ‘Saengsu Saranghoe’(생수사랑회) and ‘Good Neighbors’. Choi and Caffe Bene plan to work together to donate a part of the company’s profits to the two charity organizations for the disabled over the next ten years.

Caffe Bene recently said after it signed the contract with the actor, sales went up by fourfold and inquiries related to franchise openings began pouring in.

Caffee Bene is a franchise coffee shop that is quickly taking over Korea’s coffee franchise market with its comfortable and open atmosphere, cozy interior and top-quality service. Market experts say the rapid growth of Caffe Bene can be attributed to the cheaper yet high-quality special-blend coffee drinks it offers its customers. Korea’s coffee franchise market is still dominated by expensive overseas coffee companies.

Choi Soo-jong is an exemplary celebrity who is widely acknowledged and respected for his continuous social contributions, regularly donating to charities and actively volunteering with his wife, Ha Hee-ra. Together with his wife, who is also a top Korean actress, Choi works as a publicity envoy for ‘Good Neighbors’, an international children’s charity organization.

The couple has volunteered in Nepal and Cambodia as well as in Taean following the disastrous oil spill that polluted the pristine coast of the South Chungcheong Province in December last year.

Choi Soo-jong debuted in 1987 as a young actor in the popular TV drama series ‘Love Tree’. Throughout his 20-year acting career, Choi has been widely acknowledged both in and out of Korea for his leading roles in phenomenally successful shows including ‘Dae Jo Yeong’, ‘Emperor of the Sea’ and ‘Taejo Wang Geon’. He and his also-famous wife have two children.

하반기 주중 드라마는 규모와 별들의 전쟁

하반기 평일 드라마의 경쟁이 극도로 치열할 전망이다. 수백억원의 자금이 투입된 블록버스터 드라마가 있는가 하면, 송승헌 송일국 박신양 송혜교 문근영 등 톱스타들이 주연을 맡아 채널 다툼이 볼 만할 것으로 점쳐지고 있다.

지상파 3사의 주중 미니시리즈는 방송국의 드라마 이미지를 좌우하고 광고 수주에도 큰 영향을 미치기 때문에 방송사는 사활을 걸고 주중 드라마에 대한 지원과 투자를 아끼지 않는다. 주중 드라마는 드라마중에서도 젊은 층에 소구하는 바가 높아 방송국 이미지에도 적지 않은 영향을 미친다.

요즘 드라마가 스타를 출동시킨다고 해서 흥행에 성공하는 것도 아니고, 수백억을 투입한 대작을 만든다고 해서 시청률이 보장되는 것이 아님은 누구나 알고 있다. 하지만 스타와 돈이라는 외형 못지않게 실력있는 작가와 PD들이 가세해 이들이 만들어낼 ‘시대적 감수성’에 대한 기대도 가지게 한다.

특히 주말극과 일일극에서는 강세를 보이고 있으면서도 평일 드라마에서는 열세를 면치 못했던 KBS는 비장의 카드를 준비하고 있다. 수목극에는 현재 방송 중인 ‘태양의 여자’ 후속으로 다음달 6일 첫 방송될 ‘전설의 고향’으로 한여름밤의 강렬함을 선사한다. 비록 8부작의 브리지 코너지만 최수종 박민영 등 스타를 캐스팅해 공포물의 원조를 재가공한다.

수목극의 본 게임은 ‘전설의 고향’을 이어받아 9월 3일부터 방송되는 대하사극 ‘바람의 나라’(극본 정진옥 박진우)에서 이뤄진다. 만화가 김진의 동명 만화를 원작으로 한 ‘바람의 나라’는 150억원이 투입되는 블록버스터 드라마로 히트 제조기인 ‘해신’의 강일수 PD와 송일국이 다시 한번 손잡아 기대를 한몸에 받고 있다.

고구려 3대 대무신왕 무휼의 일대기를 다루는 ‘바람의 나라’는 대무신왕에 송일국, 대무신왕의 아버지인 유리왕에 정진영을 캐스팅하고 6주 일정의 중국 쓰촨 성 로케이션에 나서고 있다. 지난 3월 결혼식을 올린 송일국은 신혼을 반납한 채 현지에서 무더위와 싸우고 있는데, ‘바람의 나라’ 만화 팬인 송일국의 아내가 오히려 출연을 부추겼다는 후문이다. 강 PD는 “어드벤처에 약간의 판타지와 만화적 감성을 담고 있는 퓨전 사극이 될 것”이라고 말해 기대감을 부추겼다.

KBS 월화극은 현재 방송되고 있는 ‘최강칠우’ 후속작인 ‘연애결혼’ 다음 작품인 ‘그들이 사는 세상’이 주목을 받고 있다. 노희경 작가와 표민수 PD가 6년 만에 다시 손잡은 이 작품은 드라마 제작 현장을 생동감 있게 그릴 전문직 드라마다. 일찌감치 브라운관 복귀작으로 캐스팅된 송혜교와 현빈은 여기서 각각 PD를 맡았다.

전문직 드라마는 이미 의사, 기자, 변호사, 방송계 종사자를 등장시켜 관심을 끈 바 있다. 드라마 제작 과정에 관한 드라마는 최근에도 ‘온에어’가 방송됐다. 그럼에도 ‘그들이 사는 세상’에 주목하는 것은 한 단계 진화된 전문직 드라마의 모습을 보여줄 것이라는 기대감 때문이다. 드라마 제작에 관련된 ‘일’만 열심히 보여주는 것이 아니라 ‘일’을 통해 새로운 휴머니티를 발견하게 된다는 것. 표 PD는 “인간에 대한 성찰에 탁월한 감각을 보유한 노 작가의 대본이 이번에도 디테일을 섬세하게 그리고 있다”고 밝혔다.

SBS는 수목극으로 ‘바람의 화원’, 월화극으로 ‘타짜’를 준비하고 있다. 조선 후기 천재화가 신윤복과 김홍도의 삶과 그림이 주요 소재인 ‘바람의 화원’은 문근영이 남장 여인의 신윤복을 맡아 화제가 되고 있다. 신윤복의 그림 속에서 미스터리적인 요소를 담고 있는 이 드라마는 서스펜스와 반전으로 탄탄한 구성을 자랑하는 동명 원작 소설을 바탕으로 하기에 기대감을 더욱 부풀리고 있다. 남자 주인공은 박신양.

도박판에서 벌어지는 승부사의 세계를 담아낸 허영만의 만화 ‘타짜’는 영화에서 이미 흥행력이 입증됐고 오는 9월 8일에는 드라마로도 가능성을 타진한다. 장혁과 김민준 외에 영화에서 김혜수가 열연한 정마담 역에 한예슬이 캐스팅됐다.

MBC는 월화극 ‘에덴의 동쪽’, 수목극 ‘베토벤 바이러스’를 후속 작품으로 정하고 이에 대응한다. 한날 한시에 같은 병원에서 태어난 두 남자의 엇갈린 운명과 복수를 그리는 ‘에덴의 동쪽’(극본 나연숙?연출 김진만)은 한류 스타 송승헌의 안방 복귀작으로 250억원의 제작비가 투입되는 대작이다. 송승헌 외에도 연정훈 이다해 한지혜 박해진 유동근 조민기 이미숙 심혜진 등 주연급 연기자가 대거 출동한다.

오는 9월 3일 방송 예정인 ‘베토벤 바이러스’(극본 홍진아 홍자람)는 오케스트라를 결성하고 고군분투하는 단원의 이야기를 그린 음악 드라마다. 인기 일본 드라마 ‘노다메 칸타빌레’의 한국판이라 할 수 있다.

마니아 드라마 ‘다모’의 이재규 PD가 오랜 기간 준비해온 이 작품은 김명민과 이지아 장근석을 캐스팅하고 오는 10일부터 촬영에 들어간다. 전문 음악가가 대거 출연할 예정이어서 시청자의 귀도 즐겁게 해줄 것으로 보인다.

The secret of being number 1 casting star

Before being officially casted for a drama there are many compromises and processes to follow. Although there might be a star that the producing staff wants it doesn't mean they will get the star. The star may be "perfect" for the role, but we in fact the star who took on this lead role is actually the 3rd or 4th actor/actress approached.

Most recently, "Iljimae" for MBC was known to have Lee Seung-ki as the main character replaced by Jeong Il-woo. Lee Seung-ki could not give up the hit show, "1 Night 2 Days". That is true, but the staff thought that Jeong Il-woo had a longer experience in acting and would be more reliable to take the lead role since he has no other shows to worry about.

Yoon Eun-hyehae from MBC "Coffee Prince" also replaced Kim Ah-joong, who was first casted. Kim Ah-joong, well known for her commercial films and the popular movie "200 Pounds Beauty" did not want to cut her long hair for the role because of many CFs that were in her schedule.

In addition, Joo Ji-hoon was casted for KBS "Hong Gil Dong" first but was replaced by Kang Ji-hwan Ji-hoon. If the staff were give same pay to Joo Ji-hoon and Kang Ji-hwan Ji-hoon, who would you cast? The staff chose the latter who recently had finished "Capital Scandal". So what are they implying?

And who was who's replacement? Did they do each other a favor?

The success of the dramas would determine that, don't you think?

Horror TV Programs to Chill Summer Nights

KBS “Korean Ghost Stories” offers horror stories with a Korean traditional twist. The program will air Aug. 6 and continue every Wednesday and Thursday at 9:55 p.m. / Courtesy of KBS

Do you need a break from the hot summer season? Public and cable television broadcasters have prepared horror programs just for the occasion.

The Korea Broadcasting System (KBS) is offering a polished version of "Korean Ghost Stories,'' a local horror program that first aired in 1977. While many horror films or dramas contain basic elements like murderers, ghosts and lots of blood, this show will offer horror with a hint of Korean tradition. A total of eight different episodes will be presented with different plots and backdrops, all related to Korean traditional myths and folk tales.

An episode called "The Return of the Gumiho'' will show the creepy tale about a young woman who was brutally murdered by her own brother. The women dies, but she is reincarnated as the legendary gumiho, or a fox with nine tails. Legend says that the gumiho can transform into anything. Usually the imaginary creature is known to change itself into a pretty lady and seduce men, and the story eventually leads to a deadly revenge or murder. Other episodes feature the mysterious tales of Korean traditional exorcism and shamanism. "Korean Ghost Stories'' starts Aug. 6 and continues every Wednesday and Thursday at 9:55 p.m. on KBS2.

Cable channel tvN is currently airing Korea's first exorcism documentary "Exorcist'' every Wednesday. The program features real stories of people allegedly possessed by ghosts and suffering other unexplainable pain and then sends exorcists, hypnotists or shaman to oust the "evil spirits.'' Instead of simply exposing these people to the viewers, the program aims to actually cure them.

"It may seem fake or just superstition, but regardless, there are actually many people suffering from these problems,'' said Baek Jong-hak, the host of the program. Watch these haunting real stories of people suffering from mysterious causes every Wednesday at midnight on tvN.

For hardcore scary movies, turn to cable channel SuperAction at midnight every Sunday. The channel is presenting the second season of "Masters of Horrors,'' a popular American television series created by famed director Mick Garris ("Psycho IV: The Beginning,'' 1990). The 13-episode series offers one-hour films made by prominent horror movies directors, including Tobe Hooper ("The Texas Chain Saw Massacre,'' 1974) and John Carpenter ("Halloween,'' 1978). SuperAction will offer two episodes every Sunday until August 3, a total of 10 films will be shown, excluding three that have been banned by the Korea Communications Standards Commission for extreme scenes and storylines.

For those who want to beat the summer heat through thrilling action, tune to cable channel XTM's "Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles.'' Produced by C2 Pictures and Warner Brothers, the producers of "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003),'' the series will pump up adrenaline with its realistic action sequences. Producers of Popular TV Series 'Mom's Dead Upset' in Dilemma

"Mom's Dead Upset" is a popular drama series on KBS 2TV that boasts a high viewer rating of 30 percent. The producers of the drama, however, are facing a dilemma regarding when to end the series, as the cast and crew of the show are showing signs of fatigue and physical meltdown.

Writer Kim Soo-hyun, the pillar of the show, underwent surgery late last year to remove breast cancer. Fortunately, the cancer was at an early stage so the operation was successful, but doctors say that the writer needs to rest.

Producer Jung Eul-Young as well as actresses Kim Hye-ja and Shin Eun-kyung have been complaining of extreme fatigue.

The show was originally planned to end at episode 69 at the end of September, but the cast of the show are asking to end it at episode 61 at the end of August.

Samhwa Production says when it signed the contract with KBS, the two sides agreed to end the show at episode seven {?}, but present circumstances are calling for further negotiations.

Actress Kim Min-hee taken to emergency room late at night

7/14/08 – Choi Soo Jong, Lee Duk Hwa, Ahn Jae Mo, and Jae Hee will perform in the 8-episode Wednesday-Thursday one-act drama series "Hometown of the Legend (전설의 고향)" scheduled to be aired by KBS2 on 8/6. Lee Young Eun, Park Min Young, and Park Ha Sun (이영은, 박민영, 박하선) will play female ghost in respective episode.

This series will present TV viewers horrible storylines in episodes including "Return of the Nine-Tailed Fox (구미호의 귀환)", "The Curse of Sajin Sword (사진검(四辰劍)의 저주)", "Oh Goo the Exorcism (오구도령)", "Ghost Letter (귀서, 鬼書)", "Ghost Story (기방괴담)", etc.

In "Return of the Nine-Tailed Fox", Park Min Young plays the nine-tailed fox Myung Ok (명옥) who is entangled in the rise and fall of a family. The filming of this episode started in July and will be aired on 8/6.

In "The Curse of Sajin Sword", Choi Soo Jong plays the role Yoon In (윤인). It portrays the holy 'Sajin Sword' involving the royal family twice into the disturbance of war. Actress Park Ha Sun plays a female ghost. Actor Lee Jung (이정) and actress Sa Gang (사강) also perform in this episode. Sa Gang plays the role Moo Ryung (무령). This episode is scheduled to be aired on 8/13.

In "Ghost Letter", Ahn Jae Mo plays a cold-hearted and righteous prosecutor. In 1999, he also performed in a similar drama with the same name - "Hometown of the Legend'. This episode will be aired on 8/14.

In "Oh Goo the Exorcism", Lee Young Eun plays two roles. One role is Min Yu Rim (민여림) who loves the exorcist Yoon Ki Joo (윤기주, played by Jae Hee) but then becomes a vindictive ghost. Another role is Lee Chae Ok (이채옥) who resembles Yu Rim. This episode is scheduled to be aired on 8/21.

City of Glass (and mud)

SBS is gearing up its new weekend drama City of Glass, to follow the currently airing Happiness. The drama began shooting on July 14 in the city of Boryeong in south Chungcheong province, with Yoon Soyi (Auction House, Goodbye Solo) shown here in her role as the lead reporter character.

In the photos below, Yoon portrays a newbie reporter covering the Boryeong Mud Festival, who suddenly finds herself in the middle of an arrest for a murder suspect. Her character grew up in a tough family background to become a news announcer, meets her white-horse-bestridden prince and undergoes a “Cinderella”-like change in marrying her rich husband. However, she clashes with her husband’s family, divorces, and sets off to follow her dream once more. The drama also stars Lee Jin-wook (Rivals, Someday) and Kim Seung-soo (Don’t Ask About the Past, Jumong).

City of Glass, written by Choi Hyun-kyung (As Much as Heaven and Earth) and directed by Jo Nam-kook (SBS’s Hong Kong Express), premieres in September and is planned for 50 episodes.

Personally, I was bored by the description till I came upon the divorce aspect of it, which is a new twist on an otherwise overdone story. Yoon Soyi’s a little hit or miss with me — I think she was good in Goodbye Solo, but that could have just been the strong direction showing her in her best light. Too bad it’s such a long series, though, which is the biggest deterrent for me. The length is also why I never jumped aboard Happiness, which from all reports sounds like an enjoyable drama.

"Mandate: Mission from the Gods" Jae Hee leaving for military duties

His new movie is out, "Mandate: Mission from the Gods" but he won't be there for its release and the publicizing because of military duties.

The action thriller movie is about a manipulative murderer and a ghost hunter seeking him where Jae Hee, previously from "A Witch in Love" is the ghost hunter. Jae Hee costars with Yoo Da-in, a commercial film star.

Jae-Hee will be leaving the entertainment industry for two years for military duties this August 5th.

His movie will be published this September.

Jae Hee has been in successful dramas and movies such as "Sassy Girl, Chun-hyang" and "2-Iron".

Jeong Woo-seong plays a lonely character in his next work, a Korean-Japanese joint drama "City Hunter". His character resembles the one in "Beat", which helped him rise to stardom. In the manga, his character, Ryo Saeba, is an absent-minded killer who likes pretty girls only to be hit with a 100-ton hammer. If the girl is ugly and doesn't have a nice body, he doesn't take her as a client.
