3 Stations Agree to Alternate Olympic Broadcasts

Wednesday, July 16, 2008 08:30:01

The three major Korean broadcasters KBS, MBC and SBS will take turns in broadcasting major games of the summer Beijing Olympics.

The Korean Broadcasters Association said the three agreed to alternate broadcasts popular with the public to prevent wasting airtime and for audience rights on channel selection.

The three baseball preliminaries will be shared by each broadcaster while two broadcasters will relay each of the three soccer preliminaries.

If Korea advances to the quarterfinals in soccer and baseball, each station can make their own broadcast decisions.

They also agreed to alternate broadcasts of the 2010 soccer World Cup and the 2012 Olympics.

Jeong Woo-seong movie "Beat" made into a drama

19150418921_60800040.jpg

Movie star Jeong Woo-seong's movie "Beat" from 10 years ago is made into a drama.

The movie has been a hit and definitely is one of the movies that Jeong Woo-seong enjoyed filming. He is excited to know that it is going to produced as a drama.

He knows that there are many actors available for the main character role, but he wants them to do a better job than him in portraying emotions.

The movie in 1997 starred top stars like Jeong Woo-seong, Ko So-young and Im Chang-jeong in which the story is based from a comic book by Heo Yeong-man.

Jeong Woo-seong is also very much in love with the most recent movie he has filmed, "The Good, the Bad, the Weird".

If you haven't watched those two movies with this hot star you should do so now!

Ko’s cartoons still a big draw

July 10, 2008

Many mourned when cartoonist Ko Woo-young passed away three years ago at the age of 67.

His works, however, remain in many people’s hearts.

The Arco Art Center in Daehangno, central Seoul, is holding a retrospective on the works of Ko, a representative comic artist of 1970s and 1980s Korea. “Ko Woo-young Comics: Never Ending Story,” opens next Wednesday.

“His works still have so much to reveal,” said Kwon Jin, the center’s communications manager.

The retrospective displays original works preserved by the family.

Artsists from other generations also offer new perspectives on Ko’s work.

For example, Kim Hong-jun, the director of “La Vie en Rose” (1994), remade Ko’s comedy film “Garujigi” (1988), which originally starred Lee Dae-geun and Kim Mun-hee. Garujigi is a story of commoners’ life and their pursuit of social reforms. It revolves around Byeon Kang-soe (Lee Dae-geum), the tough, macho sex symbol.

Collections of contemporary cartoon artists Joo Jae-hwan, Kang Kyung-ju and Yoon Dong-chun are also on display.

“Visitors are welcome to enjoy a wide range of genres ? paintings, sculptures, videos and installations ? that all relate to Ko’s comics,” Kwon said. “The late Ko’s works related to popular culture three decades ago and even today.”

09211514.jpg

Characters from Chohanji (1984)

Ko made his debut in 1953 with his 16-paged “Jwidori” (jwi means mouse in Korean), a Korean version of Disney’s Mickey Mouse.

He was the first to serialize a newspaper comic, “Imkukjung,” in Sports Daily in 1972, which increased the number of copies published.

His works, including “Suhoji” (1973), “Three Kingdoms” (1978) and “Iljime” (1975) are mainly satirical and critical of society.

The final episode of Suhoji was published in 2003. He started the comic in the early 1970s but publication was interrupted at times because the military regime had prohibited publishing and he had poor health.

“The exhibition tries to accept different artist’s work and their views,” Kwon said. “Different generations of artists have reinterpreted Ko’s work.”

Characters from Suhoji (1973)

On the second floor of Arko Art Center, there is a lounge where visitors can read Ko’s classic comics.

The retrospective runs until Sept. 12. It is open every day except Mondays from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tickets are 2,000 won ($1.40) for adults and 1,000 won for students. Hyehwa Station, line No. 4, exit 2. For more information visit www.arkoartcenter.or.kr or call (02) 760-4724.

SBS’ 타짜 (War of Flowers) Gambles with Casting

Posted by . X . on Jul 22, 2008.

Posted in TV , Asia.

tajjaas7.jpg

You’d think things like these happened only on silly, pseudo-"drama vérité” like 온에어 (On Air). After Choi Dong-Hoon’s film version a few years ago, Heo Young-Man’s bestseller manhwa 타짜 (War of Flowers) will get its TV treatment on SBS later this summer, but the bone of contention right now is casting. Most of the casting for the show, which will go against MBC’s blockbuster 에덴의 동쪽 (East of Eden), has been completed, with the real problem being the role of Madam Jung, played by Kim Hye-Soo in the film. Sung Hyun-Ah was cast first, apparently, but yesterday Olive9 announced the casting of Gang Sung-Yeon, who played Jang Nok-Su in 왕의 남자 (The King & The Clown). Was it just a case of the good old switcheroo? Sung Hyun-Ah learned of this all on the net.

Now, who would give justice to the role, that’s up to debate (although both would be just fine). But a sort of war of words started raging today: Sung Hyun-Ah complained on her blog of unfair practices by Olive9, who just abandoned her and her efforts the last few months to cast one of their actors. And of course Gang Sung-Yeon replied on her site that she was originally cast in the role, and when the writer had to change and her role got a little smaller, producers might have misunderstood her intentions and cast someone else in the role. But she never stole anything from anybody, and the role belongs to her.

Although netizens are already casting the blame on one or the other party, the only parties to blame are really the producers Olive9, who allowed this to get out in the open so overtly, and the system itself. With producing companies also playing the part of talent agencies, the practice of what we could call “block casting” has become increasingly popular. Last year’s 고맙습니다 (Thank You) was filled to the brim with actors contracted under producers Sidus HQ, and since containing the spiraling costs of casting has become more and more important, it’s no surprise such practice is on the rise. It wouldn’t be so outrageous, then, if Gang Sung--Yeon (who’s under Olive9’s wings) was chosen over Sung Hyun-Ah for the same exact reason, although who’s feigning and who’s telling the truth is something we can only endlessly speculate.

War of Flowers starts airing in September, ironically right after another drama adapted from a Heo Young-Man manhwa, 식객 (Gourmet).

It’s a Love Marriage for Hwang Bora

July 22nd, 2008 // by javabeans

2008072381697_2008072240481.jpg

Actress Hwang Bora (Rainbow Romance, My Girl) is making her television comeback after she was caught last December for drunk driving. She was found driving with a blood-alcohol content of 0.135% (U.S. legal limits are 0.08%; South Korea penalizes BAC of 0.05-0.09 with a 100 days’ license cancellation, and over 0.10 with cancellation of a license). Public opinion was (rightly, for once) censorious, and needless to say, she’s laid low since the incident.

Now she’s been cast in the upcoming KBS drama Love Marriage, a romantic comedy set to take Strongest Chil Woo’s place on Monday and Tuesday nights after that drama wraps next month. The series will be penned by Goong scribe Lee Eun-ah and stars Kim Min-hee (Some Like it Hot) as a “couple manager” at a dating service, while Kim Ji-hoon (Why Did You Come to Our House?, Flowers For My Life) is cast as a divorce attorney. Hwang Bora plays a part-time employee at Kim Min-hee’s office.

Love Marriage premieres August 25.

Call me girly — I wear the badge proudly! — but I may just really dig this one. I like the two lead actors, and I liked Hwang Bora well enough before her stupid mistake, which she’s hopefully learned from (taxis, people! You’re famous stars, why are you driving yourselves around anyway?). And despite finding Goong highly overrated, I think the writing was decent until the drama extensions caused all that boring, convoluted nonsense toward the end.

It’s a wrap for Iljimae

July 24th, 2008 // by javabeans

PP08072400178.JPG

PP08072400180.JPG

The cast and production team of SBS’s Iljimae gathered at Yongsan CGV today (July 24) to watch the finale of the drama together. The hit fusion sageuk premiered on May 21 to viewership ratings of 14.8%, which steadily climbed over the course of the drama’s run to end in the near-30% range.

In attendance was the drama’s star, Lee Junki, with co-stars Lee Young-ah, Han Hyo-joo, and Park Shi-hoo, as well as PD Lee Yong-seok. Approximately 400 to 600 attendees were present (the numbers vary according to different reports), most of whom were members of Lee Junki’s fan club and the drama’s online fan café members. [spoiler highlight to read]

By the way, it appears the fans are in a spot of denial about the drama’s ending, saying, “He may have died, but he’s not really dead.” Which sounds to me like dude’s dead. Reading the article’s summary of the ending, wherein Iljimae confronts the eeeevil king and engages in a hard fight against the king’s men, it also seems to bear similarities to the ending of Hong Gil Dong, actually, which was an ending I appreciated but would rather avoid repeating in more dramas of its kind. Chil Woo had better stay alive, is all I’m sayin’.

Lee Junki and PD Lee both expressed their thanks for the fans and staff, although Lee Junki did wish they’d had more time to present a better finale episode (”If we’d had more time, we could have shown you a better result, but I’m a little disappointed that we weren’t able to do that”), referring to how things fell behind schedule. Apparently the drama finished filming its last episode… on the day the last episode aired. (Yeesh! The last time I heard of something that frantic was with Fantasy Couple’s finale, which sounded insane.)

The drama Working Mom (starring Yeom Jung-ah and Bong Tae-gyu) will air in Iljimae’s time slot starting next week, on July 30.

Original Korean Article: Lady.khan 2008-07

English Translation Credit: HanCinema

[interview of the week] Thirty, rehearsal is over! Entertainer Lee Ji-hoon

It's been 12 years since Lee Ji-hoon's debut, but he is 'still' careful to define himself. The word 'still' may sound odd, but that seems most fitting. It's because he has overcome dangers that don't happen easily, and he is beginning to bear fruit for his longtime prayers. Lee Ji-hoon, who is turning thirty this year, says that his life so far has only been an introduction.

20080716141630_1_leejh1.jpg

The thing I need is not a break but energy

"One glass of hot cocoa".

Mid-June brought an earlier heat wave, and Lee Ji-hoon, who we met at a cafe, ordered hot cocoa. Hot cocoa on a day for refreshing iced tea He laughs and explains, feeling the eyes of the reporter on him.

"I didn't get to drink it this morning. I have filming left in the afternoon, so I'm going to replenish my calories". MBC drama "New Heart", which started November 2007 ended in February, in March and April, made his album and started filming KBS drama "You Are My Destiny", Japanese show in May and release of his sixth album ' The Classic '. Lee Ji-hoon, who has come nonstop, didn't need a break but replenishment. In the midst of his busy schedule with drama filming, interviews, and television programs, he is heavy-hearted for the lack of his album activities.

"It's my first album in four years. I wanted to go around several districts and share my music but I'm so busy with my drama schedule that I can't find the time".

Since he's a supporting character and not the main, he started the drama thinking that there wouldn't be a big problem. However, with the rising viewing rates, Lee Ji-hoon's role also grew.

"The character of Kang Tae-poong is the one who connects all the characters together. Thankfully, the writer developed my role a lot. I believe it'll only get bigger".

The disappointment with his album activities will only be solved with time. He set aside thoughts of ending it abruptly and plans to declare a war. He plans to sing until this fall.

"There is a disappearance of famous songs these days. Before, if I released one album, there were a lot of songs that received love for more than a year, but the speed at which the public's taste changes is getting quicker. It gets popular fast and goes down fast. It's very unfortunate".

He has met the public as an actor rather than a singer for several years, but he has never let go of the string of being a singer. As a singer, he wasn't planning the break he had recently.

"I entered the industry at a young age, and I adjusted well with no trouble. I wanted to form my own identity without someone to lean on. I planned my own schedule, studied a character when a scenario came in, signed contracts at movie production companies, and drove all by myself. And I was able to learn the hardships of managers and producers. I learned, 'Although he looks calm on the outside, he's not. It's not easy'. I think I've matured now".

In 1996, he debuted with 'Why the Sky' in high school, and as an idol star, there was not much he could do by himself. He received help from his manager for things that an average person does easily, such as receiving a certified resident registration or bank affairs. Only in 2004 did he leave his entertainment company for the first time, truly 'standing alone'.

If the people around him had made Lee Ji-hoon before, he is now forming his own self. His recent album has that theme in it. He used to just sing and leave everything up to others, but this time, he worked on the album design, music video, and communicated well with the songwriters. He is disappointed that he can't spend his time on doing his music that he spent so much time on, but he is thankful for the work he has now. He is acting, singing, and participating in variety shows, and I asked his 'main line of work'.

"I don't think I have anything like that. Of course, there is passion in the moments when I'm saying. It's the same when I'm acting or in variety programs. If there are people who look out for me and need me, I want to show them my best. I'm just thankful that there are people who want me".

20080716141630_3_leejh3.jpg

Beyond idol

It's been 12 years since his debut. I call him a genuine idol, 'the original idol', and he jumps up and asks to call him 'middle-aged'.

"As an actor, I'm still a newcomer. In the music industry well, I'm a lot older. These days, if I stay in the waiting room in the broadcasting buildings, there are many juniors who come to pay respects to me. Inside, I think, 'They're becoming hospitable to their seniors. That's a relief'.

It seems that he doesn't realize how respectable he is to singers who are debuting. He didn't seem to have the pride as an 'original idol'. Except for the fact that he's more comfortable when he meets people and he defines relationships differently, he says there's not a big change from 12 years ago.

"If you took out 'loyalty', I was simply a corpse. If it was a friend's request, I did anything for them, and if they called me in the middle of the night, I went to them. If I had kept my loyalties by sacrificing myself, I believe that now, I should keep my loyalties by taking care of myself. Competition is fierce, and it even exists between friends. I realized that you can only maintain relationships if you somewhat match their level. If you keep comparing yourself with others and believe that you're not good enough for them, that relationship doesn't work out. I have thoughts about investing in myself and building substance. There were many times that I overlooked things because they were friends, and I would experience heartbreak alone. If friends can't understand that, it's not friendship. It was a situation that everyone could have understood, but I didn't know".

Listening to his story, there are two people that come to mind. Kang Ta and Shin Hye-sung. They were the three who were rumored to be close, and they debuted at similar ages and had similar problems and helped each other. They are the style to not say a word and support each other for things concerning work.

There is also an organization called '79 Club' that comes to mind. '79 Club' consists of Park Kyeong-rim, Lee Ki-chan, Lee Hyo-lee, Lee Soo-young, and others who were born in 1979, and is currently 'broken up'.

"Three or four years ago, we met quite often. We met regularly about twice or three times a month, had drinks, and talked, but we don't do it anymore. They all like drinking except me. I had the role of cleaning up after them (laugh)".

Since youthful men and women met, there must have been thoughts of dating none of them, but he says he never saw Lee Hyo-lee and Lee Soo-young as women. When he decides they're friends once, they're always friends. There is no chance that friends and a woman with a boyfriend will be promoted to a lover. He is different from the 'player' image he gets from television.

"Many people see me like that because I'm sentimental and very thoughtful. There are many who think, 'He seems to be vain. He must have met a lot of girls', but most of my friends are guys". He said he truthfully mostly avoids women and makes an expression that he feels falsely charged for his image. I also asked him about the recent scandal with Shin Bong-seon.

"I sent a text message saying I was sorry to Bong-seon. I got a favorable impression from seeing her on television. I just said it because I was able to film with her, but I didn't know things would get this big. It seems Shin Bong-seon also heard things from here and there. This is why you have to be careful about what you say on show programs (laugh)".

20080716141711_1_leejh2.jpg

The first page of my 30s

Lee Ji-hoon always seemed relaxed. Maybe we can call it the dignity of having been in the business for 12 years. He doesn't become confused or agitated easily. If you think about it, it seems he was like that from his debut. The public can see that his life has flowed like water, without any big troubles, and it seems he'll continue like that. But even for him, there was a crisis.

"If you tell me to talk about my memories, I don't have any. Since I started my social life early, I don't have the memories of childhood experiences. Since I earned money from high school, I was well off financially, but I regretted that I grew up without being able to do the things I wanted to".

This is why he gets worried when he sees younger singers entering the industry at an earlier age than when he debuted.

"After debuting early and getting popular, they may get hurt when they feel that their popularity is declining. I thought about that a lot too. If I can't make it here, what do I have to do? Do I have to die? If I had to, I would have to get by somehow I get really frustrated about what I have to do".

He is in the top 1% of entertainers who have constantly received the public's love. If you are famous, you always have the uneasiness about when you'll be neglected. For Lee Ji-hoon, it was in his mid-20s. The thing that held him together was his religion.

"Prayer was more powerful to me than the comforting words of others. The thing I prayed about produced good results. When I first started acting, there were few singers turned actors, and public opinion was not positive. But that has changed. Directors and producers see me favorably too. I really tried hard to be considered worthy. It was probably the same for others in similar situations".

Now, there are some answers. In the midst of a busy schedule with dramas, shows, albums, and musicals, he was able to succeed in everything because he believed that everything would work out through his prayers.

He calls his 30s the 'first page' of his life. "I believe that the past 12 years of my life in the entertainment industry is the introduction of a book called 'Lee Ji-hoon'. I often say that I am in the middle of rehearsal. Now, I think I know that this is how I'm supposed to do things. Since my 30s are an introduction, the main story will be at my 40s? The conclusion, who knows? I want to perform as a singer in front of thousands. I don't know if it'll be in Korea or in Japan, but I want to. If I grow naturally as an actor with time and experience, I believe I can become productive like Sin Goo and Lee Soon-jae".

Horror Comes Back to Korean TV with 전설의 고향 (Hometown of Legends)

Posted by . X . on Jul 25, 2008

Posted in TV , Asia.

kohyanglm1.jpg

It was a fixture of Korean TV ever since the late 70s, and it arguably became the spark that influenced all the 처녀귀신 (virgin ghost)-themed summer horror films. But the, well, legendary 전설의 고향 (Hometown of Legends) eventually fell prey to the constantly changing environment of Korean TV, and slowly disappeared along with the entire horror genre. There were tentatives to resurrect horror on TV, such as the hilariously campy 1994 Shim Eun-Ha “shocker” M, and a remake of the original “Legend” series in the late 90s, but they both didn’t quite live up to expectations. If you want to get pedantic, the genre did resurrect on Cable TV in recent years, but it’s mostly as an excuse to make quasi-softcore porn, with some scares thrown in the mix. Ironically, whereas the genre seems on its last legs on the film side, it’s coming back to Korean TV after almost a decade, with the new Hometown of Legends.

It could feel like a little out of place in 2008, particularly as we’re dealing with period dramas with a very traditional notion of horror (again, the virgin ghost, the goblin and the like), but it suddenly becomes interesting when you look at the cast & crew. The show is structured just like the old format: 8 self-contained stories, with different producers, writers, and cast. The most interesting of the 8 is certainly 구미호 (Fox with Nine Tails), produced by the insanely talented Kwak Jung-Hwan of last year’s 한성별곡 正 (Conspiracy in the Court). Among the list you can also find PD Lee Jung-Seop of 쾌도 홍길동 (Hong Gil Dong). The real interesting point is the cast: for a relatively low-profile show like this, Hometown of Legends is full of sageuk veterans and interesting youngsters. Just to name a few, Choi Su-Jong of 대조영 (Dae Jo Young), Lee Deok-Hwa, Ahn Jae-Mo, Kim Ha-Eun of Conspiracy in the Court, Ahn Seok-Hwan, Park Ha-Seon, Song Ok-Sook, Kim Jin-Tae, and more.

Teaser trailer below the break is rather teasing (and kind of corny), but it’s good to start. This might just become the surprise of the year, considering the talent involved. First story airs on August 6, and we’ll have reviews of every episode in the coming weeks.

Actress Chae Shi-ra Falls from a Horse

e080721_01.jpg

Actress Chae Shi-ra fell from a horse while practicing horse-riding for historical drama “Empress Cheonchu” and suffered a hairline fracture to her hip bone. Chae had been practicing for two months at a riding track in Paju, Geyonggi Province.

She had been learning to ride a horse for her role as the greatest female warrior empress in Korean history. At first she thought she only suffered minor contusion, but went to see the doctor after being in constant pain for a week. Doctors have ordered rest for Chae and her prognosis will be determined in two weeks.

The new historical epic to be aired later this year, following “King Sejong,” “Empress Cheonchu” portrays the life and achievements of the most influential women in Goryeo Dynasty. She was supposedly a fierce warrior and experienced politician, who fought against the Tungustic people of Manchuria to claim Goryeo’s old territory. Chae was taking riding lessons in an apparent attempt to portray the empress’s feisty character perfectly.

Chae Si-Ra Injury Delays Sageuk 천추태후 (Empress Cheonchu)

Posted by . X . on Jul 28, 2008

Posted in TV , Asia.

20080728154510.003.0.jpg

Can’t possibly call this good news, but the actors’ safety is always paramount, so it’s not so bad either. Recently, on the set of the upcoming KBS sageuk 천추태후 (Empress Cheonchu), veteran Chae Si-Ra injured herself falling from a horse during practice. Despite the injury Chae joined the script rehearsal session at the KBS headquarters in crutches, not to delay proceedings any further. But the injury would get the better of her on her way home, and tests revealed the fracture is more serious than they expected, forcing the star of 해신 (Emperor of the Sea) to eight weeks of complete rest. This puts the drama in a tricky position. Usually weekend historical dramas on KBS tend to take a good 4 months of headstart, to always find themselves shooting at least a month ahead of broadcast—the reason you tend to see exciting and elaborate battles almost only from that format is because it takes a very long time to shoot them, obviously. Most weekly dramas don’t have the luxury, with scripts often coming out a week before the shoot. But with two months of forced rest, it’s very likely the drama will have to be postponed.

The most likely scenario now is 대왕세종 (Sejong the Great) being extended a dozen episodes, perhaps until the end of the year. This wouldn’t be so bad, because the drama starring Kim Sang-Kyung spent way too long on its introductory phase, and will need to rush during the last twenty episodes, if it really wants to portray King Sejong’s reign effectively. Another option could be throwing a 16 episode miniseries in between, but there’s really no available substitute at the moment, unless KBS wants to break the “blood-line” that saw historical dramas on weekends become a tradition ever since the early 80s, albeit they changed station from KBS1 to KBS2 and even showed a dubbed Chinese sageuk in the middle. Still, PD Shin Chang-Seok says he will wait for Chae, so we’ll have just to wait and see as well. Empress Cheonchu is the long awaited return of the Goryeo series on KBS. It tells the story of Cheonchu, consort of King Gyeongjong; the political schemes that engulfed the Goryeo throne at the time, and the war with the Khitan led by legendary general Gang Gam-Chan. Produced by Shin Chang-Seok of 명성황후 (The Last Empress) and 무인시대 (The Age of Warriors), it’s written by Son Young-Mok of the forgotten (not by me!) gem 천둥소리 (Roll of Thunder), and is filled to the brim with sageuk veterans. Other than Chae, cast includes Choi Jae-Sung, Lee Deok-Hwa, Kim Suk-Hoon, Jung Jin, Shin Ae, Kim Myung-Soo, Im Hyeok, Kim Ho-Jin and more.
