Homegrown blockbusters set to hit screens in summer

By Kim Boram (brk@yna.co.kr) | July 06, 2022

SEOUL, July 6 (Yonhap) -- The local box office in the upcoming summer peak season will highly likely be a four-way race among Korean blockbusters as theaters are gearing up for a continuous rush of filmgoers.

The sci-fi action fantasy "Alienoid" will hit local theaters July 20, opening the largely all-Korean competition for the season.  The new film by popular filmmaker Choi Dong-hoon, who has made many smash-hit films, including "The Thieves" (2012) and "Assassination" (2015), depicts two parallel worlds of the 14th and 21st centuries that start to connect with each other as the gates of time travel open due to a mysterious force.  It is one of the most anticipated films in the summer vacation season for its star-studded cast, including Kim Tae-ri, Kim Woo-bin, Ryu Jun-yeol and So Ji-sub, and crew members, including production designer Lee Ha-jun of "Parasite" (2019).

The new historical war film "Hansan," directed by Kim Han-min, will premier a week later.  The second installment of Kim's trilogy about battles led by Adm. Yi Sun-sin depicts the historical Battle of Hansan Island on the southern coast of Korea in July 1592. It is one of the biggest victories that the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910) pulled off against Japan during the country's Invasion of Korea (1592-1598).  It is highly expected to continue the bullish run by its predecessor, "Roaring Currents" (2014), the most-watched film in Korean box-office history with more than 17 million moviegoers.

Next is the aviation-disaster movie "Emergency Declaration," set to be released Aug. 3.  Starring Cannes-winning actors Song Kang-ho and Jeon Do-yeon, the film by Han Jae-rim tells a story about a flight from Seoul to Honolulu and its captain who declares an emergency declaration after a deadly virus planted by an unknown terrorist kills a passenger.  It was one of the official selections of the 2020 Cannes Film Festival, whose physical edition was canceled due to the pandemic, but its release has been postponed for more than two years.

On Aug. 10, "Squid Game" star Lee Jung-jae's directorial debut "Hunt" will open in local theaters after premiering at this year's Cannes.  Starring Lee and Jung Woo-sung, the espionage film is a story about two rival intelligence agents in South Korea, Park Pyong-ho (Lee) and Lee Jung-do (Jung), who separately chase after a North Korean spy leaking top secret information that could jeopardize national security. The two end up discovering a plot to assassinate the South Korean president.

Insiders expect the four blockbusters to accelerate the ongoing upbeat cycle at the local box office led by the Korean action comedy "The Roundup" in the spring.  Released in May, the sequel to the 2017 hit "The Outlaws" had garnered a total of 12.5 million admissions as of Tuesday, becoming the 14th most-watched film of all time in Korea.

The number of moviegoers reached 15.5 million in June, rising nearly back to the pre-pandemic level.
It is the highest monthly figure since the 16.84 million from January 2020 -- the last full month before the COVID-19 pandemic hit. (END)

Korean blockbusters offer immersive cinematic experience this summer

By Hwang Dong-Hee (hwangdh@heraldcorp.com) | Jul 12, 2022

Korean blockbusters will hit local theaters this summer in diverse “immersive cinema” formats to attract more moviegoers, as COVID-19 restrictions for theaters have been lifted.

Previously, special-format Imax theaters were considered the near-exclusive domain of Hollywood blockbusters such as Marvel Studios’ superhero movies. The Korean movie industry had practically shunned the format.

Until recently, only six Korean commercial films had been released in the Imax format. “Sector 7” (2011) was the first Korean movie to be screened in Imax, followed by “Along With the Gods: The Last 49 Days” (2018), “Exit” (2019), the Oscar-winning “Parasite” (2019), “Peninsula” (2020) and last year’s hit “Escape From Mogadishu.”

By contrast, this year has seen “The Pirates: The Last Royal Treasure” and “The Roundup” released in the Imax format, to be followed by two more -- “Alienoid” and “Emergency Declaration” -- in the coming weeks.

“After the COVID-19 pandemic, the trend has somewhat shifted. The audience seems to prefer an experience that can only be gained in movie theaters that are different from watching movies at home or online,” an official from CJ CGV, the country’s largest cinema chain, told The Korea Herald on Monday.

“Immersive cinema screenings like Imax and 4DX offer an expanded sense of space which allows the audience to be ‘immersed’ -- visually, audibly and even physically -- in the scene,” the official added.

According to data from the Korean Film Council, the percentage of Imax viewers in Korea increased to 1.7 percent of all theatergoers last month, from 1 percent in June 2019, before the pandemic.

Imax tickets typically cost 22,000 won ($16) per person on weekends in Seoul-area theaters, compared to 15,000 won for regular screenings.

One of the most highly anticipated movies this season is sci-fi action film “Alienoid,” directed by Choi Dong-hoon, whose recent hits include “The Thieves” (2012) and “Assassination” (2015). Set to be released July 20 in Imax and 4DX, the film’s star-studded cast includes Kim Tae-ri, Kim Woo-bin, Ryu Jun-yeol and So Ji-sub.

“The movie depicts two parallel worlds, going back and forth between the past and the present. We hope the audience can fully experience the dynamic action and sound, as if you were in the actual movie, through Imax and 4DX screenings,” said an official at CJ ENM, the film’s distributor.

Another historical war blockbuster,“Hansan,” which will be released July 27, is to be available in 4DX. Directed by Kim Han-min, the movie revolves around Adm. Yi Sun-sin and his historic Battle of Hansan Island in 1592 against Japan during the Joseon era. Kim’s previous “Roaring Currents” (2014) remains the reigning champion of Korea’s box office history, selling 17.6 million tickets in a nation of some 51 million.

“Emergency Declaration,” scheduled for an August release, will also be screened in Imax, 4DX, Screen X and 4DX Screen, a format that combines 4DX and Screen X. Starring Song Kang-ho from “Parasite,” Lee Byung-hun and Jeon Do-yeon, the movie depicts a deadly virus spreading inside a plane in flight.

The audience can experience the film’s action through moving seats along with environmental effects such as water, wind and scent in 4DX. Screen X shows the movie in three facades, using the left and right walls of the theater as additional screens. CJ CGV developed the two technologies.

The Imax technology was developed by Imax Corp., which also controls distribution at Imax-affiliated theaters.

“The pandemic has changed the demands from our audience, and we think that ‘Emergency Declaration’ is the perfect film to show the range of special screenings on offer,” said an official from Showbox, the film’s distributor.

'Emergency Declaration' delves into different types of humanity

By Hwang Dong-Hee (hwangdh@heraldcorp.com) | Jul 26, 2022

In the face of disaster, different types of people cope differently.

"Emergency Declaration," a new aviation disaster film released next month, tells a story that everyone living through the pandemic can relate to.

The film follows a detective, played by Cannes-winning actor Song Kang-ho, who investigates a suspected terrorist only to find out that he has already boarded a plane. While passengers are trapped inside, those on the ground struggle to find a way to land the plane.

"When confronted by a disaster, humans become weak and scared. They sometimes start accusing and resenting each other. But being human, they also make different choices. ... I tried to focus on our humanity which can overcome dire situations," said director Han Jae-rim during a press conference held on Monday.

"A disaster, however small or catastrophic, can come to anyone at any time," Song added. "In such cases, we are reminded of what we value the most. We start to appreciate things we took for granted, like family and neighbors."

Han and big-name actors Song, Lee Byung-hun, Jeon Do-yeon, Kim Nam-gil, Yim Si-wan, Kim So-jin and Park Hae-joon attended the press conference at Megabox Coex in southern Seoul that followed the screening.

Joining Song onscreen is another Cannes-winning actor Jeon. The two previously worked together in “Secret Sunshine” (2007).

Playing the role of a minister for Land, Infrastructure and Transport, Jeon said her character also struggles to fight off the invisible terror and human frailty.

"Although I was a high government official, I was just another human being like any other character. I also felt helpless dealing with an unprecedented terrorism disaster,” Jeon said.

Another notable character is a mysterious passenger, played by Yim Si-wan.

Regarding the casting, the director said he started with the idea of someone who viewers wouldn't imagine committing such an act of terrorism.

"I felt 'free' in expressing and portraying this character. So I was more excited than worried about the role," said Yim.

To convey a realistic-looking setting and dynamic turbulence of the plane in flight, the director used a giant gimbal to rotate the plane 360 degrees -- with the passengers inside.

"Two photography directors actually rode the gimbal and tied themselves to film the passengers’ faces and emotions. I think that‘s how we captured the moment of extreme tension," said Han.

Kim Nam-gil, who plays the airplane’s pilot, added that he put in extra effort to look like a veteran pilot.

"All the pilots in the film trained together. I practiced landing simulation, piloting and controlling all the buttons. I wanted to look real in the cockpit."

The film was invited to the non-competition section at last year's Cannes Film Festival, where it premiered. Its initial release was delayed due to the pandemic.

"As we are still recovering from the pandemic, I was more immersed in the storyline. There are different groups of people reacting differently to similar situations. ... I hope the audience enjoys the film and delves into the message we are trying to convey," said Lee Byung-hun.

"Emergency Declaration" will hit local theaters on Aug. 3.

(Movie Review) A good cast can't save contrived 'Emergency Declaration'

By Shim Sun-ah (sshim@yna.co.kr) | July 26, 2022

SEOUL, July 26 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's first aviation-disaster genre film, "Emergency Declaration," could have been remembered as a classy movie if not for its contrived and cliche-ridden story and predictable twists.

It's not that this film didn't have the quality to be selected for the Out of Competition section of the 74th Cannes Film Festival in 2021. But these flaws just stopped the latest 25 billion-won (US$19 million) budget disaster blockbuster from becoming more than absorbing action-packed entertainment with grandiose settings and A-list actors.

Written and directed by Han Jae-rim of "The King" (2017) and "The Face Reader" (2013), "Emergency Declaration" mainly follows In-ho (Song Kang-ho), a veteran police detective, in his desperate struggle to prevent a possible terrorist attack on a South Korean flight bound for Hawaii after finding out his wife is also onboard on a trip to the American resort island with her friends.

The film begins with a scene at a crowded Incheon International Airport, the main gateway to South Korea, with Jin-seok (Im Si-wan) loitering around without a clear destination in mind.

The camera then shows Jae-hyuk (Lee Byung-hun), a father with aviophobia who waits in a check-in line at the airport with his daughter. They are going to Hawaii for the sake of the girl's health. After Jin-seok tells the girl something intimidating for observing his suspicious behavior, he decides to board the same flight as the girl and her father.

In-ho goes to work as usual in the morning and receives a report about the presence of an online video of a young man threatening to wage a terrorist attack on an airplane. While all his colleagues ignored the threat as mere mischief, In-ho goes out to find the whereabouts of the man just in case and discovers at his empty house evidence showing that he has long prepared for bioterrorism.

When a passenger suddenly dies after coughing up blood on the Incheon-Hawaii plane, Jae-hyuk and Hee-jin (Kim So-jin), the chief flight attendant, begin to suspect Jin-seok as a bioterrorist. The plane's deputy pilot Hyeon-soo (Kim Nam-gil) struggles to cope with the case, moving between the cockpit and the cabin while communicating with the presidential crisis management center on the ground. As the mysterious virus planted by the terrorist quickly claims more lives, including the plane's chief pilot, he faces a critical moment in declaring an emergency landing instead of the dead pilot.

On the ground, Suk-hee (Jeon Do-yeon), minister of land, infrastructure and transport, tries to do her best to handle the unprecedented terror disaster, while Tae-soo (Park Hae-joon), the chief of the crisis management center at the presidential office, is increasingly torn between whether the government should save the people onboard or the greater number of Korean citizens on the ground.

Although the director has repeatedly emphasized that the movie is ultimately about people fighting off disaster while stranded on a plane, its strength appears to be the spectacles created by a crashing plane rather than the drama.

The production team shot the sequences of the plane fast dropping from a high altitude and its inside in a gravity-free state by rotating a life-size plane filming set 360 degrees. This provides a sense of extreme reality, making viewers feel as if they are sitting next to the passengers.

But the film's only and fatal problem is the improbability of its plot as mentioned above. (This review has some spoilers after this point, so those who are interested in the film should stop reading now.)

I'll just mention a few of the film's many improbable details. Even if we accept that there is a new type of virus that can make people bleed to death in hours after they are infected, how can so many things happen in less than eight hours of flight time? How can In-ho's wife just happen to be on the ill-fated plane and Jae-hyuk, a former pilot who worked with Hyeon-soo, happen to be aboard the same plane? How can the terrorist take out a mysterious substance he smuggled onto the plane under his skin without noticeably bleeding? What is the likelihood of a rank-and-file police detective getting into and speaking at an anti-disaster management meeting attended by only high-ranking government officials, as well as infiltrating a high-security lab where the deadly virus exists without any difficulty at all?

The lesson we learn from the movie is even a star-studded cast, including two Cannes-winning actors -- Song Kang-ho and Jeon Do-yeon -- as well as top star Lee Byung-hun, and a big budget cannot save a movie with a contrived plot and mediocre writing.

"Emergency Declaration" is set to open in local theaters Aug. 3. (END)

Song Kang-ho says 'Emergency Declaration' coincides with COVID-19 pandemic

SEOUL, July 27 (Yonhap) -- Cannes-winning actor Song Kang-ho said Wednesday that his latest disaster film, "Emergency Declaration," about an in-flight virus attack coincides with the COVID-19 pandemic that has put many people in a corner.

"When I first heard this plot from the director, I was interested in it even though we hadn't entered the coronavirus pandemic," Song said in an online interview with Korean media. "It's about many people who get through a lot of disasters in a precocious and tranquil manner."

Directed by Han Jae-rim, "Emergency Declaration" tells a story about a flight from Seoul to Honolulu and its captain who makes an emergency declaration after a deadly virus planted by an unknown terrorist kills a passenger.

Song plays In-ho, a veteran police detective who desperately struggles to prevent a possible terrorist attack on the flight after finding out his wife is also on board.

He said his film does not simply show people finally overcoming the unprecedented disaster, but it depicts their efforts to seek something valuable for themselves, their family and the community throughout the painful process.

"As we make a living, we experience some disasters, big or small. They are inevitable. How we accept those unavoidable disasters and deal with them is important," said Song, who won Best Actor for his performance in the drama "Broker" (2022), directed by Japanese auteur Hirokazu Kore-eda, at this year's Cannes Film Festival in May.

"We didn't mean for it to but the story of 'Emergency Declaration' timely coincides with our times," he said.

Due to the coronavirus outbreak, "Emergency Declaration" has been shelved for more than a year even though it premiered at the 74th Cannes Film Festival in 2021.

The actor recalled that the message of "Emergency Declaration" well resonated with the audience at Cannes last year, when he served as a competition jury member of the prestigious annual film festival.

"I received positive reviews from foreign media and critics when I was in Cannes, although I didn't see the film because I was working at the time," he said. "I think it is being well accepted by foreign viewers as the film features a likely common disaster and human effort."

The film has been long anticipated as it is the country's first aviation-disaster genre film and has an all-star cast, including Cannes-winning Song and Jeon Do-yeon, and Lee Byung-hun.

It is the first time since the drama film "Secret Sunshine" (2007) that Song and Jeon appear in the same project.

"It's an amazing and exciting experience to see these big-name actors do their job as an ensemble," he said. "There were not many scenes with all of us together, but we had good teamwork. I loved to feel that we were in the same project."

"Emergency Declaration" is set to open in local theaters next Wednesday. (END)

[INTERVIEW] Song Kang-ho drawn to message of disaster blockbuster 'Emergency Declaration'

Actor says theme of new film aligns with coronavirus pandemic

Actor Song Kang-ho is set to show another film for the year as the lead of the new disaster blockbuster, "Emergency Declaration," following the drama film, "Broker," that won him the Best Actor award at the Cannes Film Festival this May.

"There are a lot of disaster movies, not only in Korea but also in Hollywood. But the fact that 'Emergency Declaration' is trying to deliver a message to its audience was very interesting," Song told The Korea Times in an interview, Wednesday.

"As we live, we will come across disasters that shouldn't happen, whether small or large. But I think the important thing here is how we process it and work through it. And this film has a message on what we should value the most during that process, which I resonated deeply with," he said.

The action disaster film follows a terrorist attack on a flight bound to Hawaii from Korea. When a passenger dies suddenly on the plane that the suspect of a terrorist threat is on, tension and panic erupt both among people on board and on the ground.

Song plays the role of the detective In-ho, who first looks into the threat the suspect made online. As he investigates, he finds that it is more than a threat and helps the government in the operations to save the lives of all on board.

It is led by director Han Jae-rim, who helmed the historical film, "The Face Reader," (2013) and the crime film, "The King" (2017).

The director noted, during the film's press conference this week, that the film intends to zoom in on the nature of humans through the disaster story.

"When faced with a disaster, humans go through a phase of fear, becoming weak and criticizing and blaming others. But despite this, the reason we are getting through the coronavirus pandemic is that we are human and can make logical decisions," he said. "I'm not trying to depict a grandiose sacrifice but am trying to say that maybe we can overcome a catastrophe if we pay attention to these trivial aspects of human nature."

The actor shared that he was intrigued by how the director unfolds different stories of people who cope with disaster in their own ways.

"I felt that director Han has portrayed the stories of various people going through a catastrophe, in a mature, calm manner," he said, adding that the film's theme aligns with the COVID-19 pandemic that many struggles to go through.

"As we all are going through a tough time, I wish that (audiences) can find hope through this movie. Not that we have overcome the disaster, but I hope they can feel the meaning of community and think about what we should value through experiencing the movie," he said.

The story goes back and forth to follow people on the plane and on the ground. Faced with physical and political obstacles to helping passengers on board, people on the ground face dilemmas with limited options.

Song shared that in portraying his character, it was difficult for him not to try to make it too emotional in working his way through the operation on the ground.

"Having (the story) set on a plane was unique, I think. If it was a ship or train, there are stations that it can stop by. But on an airplane, you can't get any (physical) contact under any situation," he said. "So from In-ho's perspective, I tried to portray the realistic dilemma and the sympathetic feeling. But I felt that it should not come out too depressingly or too emotionally. So I discussed a lot on how I should express those points with director Han."

"Emergency Declaration" made its premiere at the Cannes Film Festival last year, screening in the non-competition section. It is set to hit local theaters on Aug. 3.

Cannes-winning actor Song Kang-ho is set to return with the latest airplane disaster film, “Emergency Declaration,” this week.

“There are many disaster movies, in Korea and Hollywood. But when I first read the script, I was drawn to the message that ‘Emergency Declaration’ is trying to deliver to the audience,” Song said during a group interview with local reporters.

“How we cope with unavoidable disasters is important. I think the film touches on what we should value the most in the process.”

Directed by Han Jae-rim, the film centers on a terrorist attack aboard a flight bound for Hawaii. When a passenger suddenly dies, panic erupts among people on board while people on the ground struggle to land the plane.

Song plays veteran detective In-ho, who investigates the terrorist threat on the ground and is faced with dilemmas and limited options.

“(While acting), I focused on portraying the desperation and emotional pain that you cannot do anything for the people on the plane. In-ho as a detective starts the investigation out of a sense of duty, but with his family involved in the disaster, he is desperate to save his wife,” Song said.

The film has been highly anticipated with two Cannes-winning actors -- Song and Jeon Do-yeon -- starring in it. Song won the best actor for “Broker” at Cannes Film Festival this May. The two were the leads in the drama film “Secret Sunshine” (2007), for which Jeon won her best actress award.

Screening in the noncompetition section, the film premiered at last year’s Cannes Film Festival but its theatrical release had been postponed for more than a year due to the pandemic.

The actor recalled receiving positive reviews from foreign media and critics when he was in Cannes.

“I remember it was accepted well by foreign viewers. Some told me it was humanistic. ... I think this is a story anyone can relate to because it features stories of people dealing with common disasters and human effort,” said Song.

“We are going through difficult times with the pandemic. I wish the audience can find hope through this movie. Not in the sense that we have to overcome a disaster, but in the process, I hope we find the meaning of community and what we should value through a cinematic experience.”

“Emergency Declaration” is set to hit local theaters Wednesday.

YonhapNews / 2022-08-03 11:37:38

SEOUL, August 3 (Yonhap) -- S.Korean movies “Emergency Declaration” and “Hunt” are joining a four-way race while first series of “Alienoid” and “Hansan: Rising dragon” are currently screening.

“Emergency Declaration” and “Hunt,” released August 3 and August 10 respectively, are both Invitational works of Cannes Film Festival. “Emergency Declaration” was invited to out-of-competition category of the Cannes Film Festival last year, while “Hunt” was invited to the Midnight Screening section at the Cannes Film Festival this year.

Two movies, second round of summer blockbusters, are not only competition between works that spent several tens of billion won for production, but it is also a confrontation between pro director Han Jae-Rim, who has cumulative viewers of 17 million people, and “new director” Lee Jung-jae.

◇ 30 billion won and 23.3 billion won blockbusters.. huge aircraft set and diverse action scenes

“Emergency Declaration” and “Hunt” spent huge amounts for production like the previously released movies “Alienoid” and “Hansan”.

Production budget of “Emergency Declaration” was 30 billion won, and break-even point is cumulative viewers of 5 million. Castings are also impressive, starring Song Kang-Ho, Lee Byung-hun, Jeon Do-yeon, Kim Nam-gil, Lim Siwan, and Kim So-jin.

Set with real aircraft is a must-see. The set was built over two months with an old Boeing 777 aircraft. The scene of the plane shaking or overturning was filmed by rotating 360 degrees a set of 7 m in width and 12 m in length with a gimbal. It is a new attempt, not even seen in Hollywood.

Production budget for “Hunt” was 23.3 billion won, while break-even point is 4.2 million cumulative viewers. Like Lead actors Lee Jung-jae and Jung Woo-sung, special guests are strong. Park Sung-woong, Yoo Jae-myung, Lee Sung-min and more will add the fun.

It also displays splendid action scenes with the backgrounds of Washington, Seoul, Tokyo, Bangkok and more. Various scenes such as shooting battles where the characters run and roll, bombing scenes, and car chases will catch audiences’ eyes.

◇ Opposite story lines... different character depiction and story development

Two movies boast huge production costs and scale, but there are differences in composition.

“Emergency Declaration” is a fictional story of terrorizing aircraft with chemical and biological weapons, but it also reminds us of the pandemic that the world has experienced over the past three years. The conflict between passengers as they are divided into infected and non-infected, contact and non-contact, is similar to the COVID-19 crisis; Conflicts that happen between countries and the issue of collectivism before the landing of aircraft are also similar.

“Hunt” is a story based on major events in Korean modern history, such as the Aung San bombing terror, the MiG defection case, and the Gwangju Democratization Movement. It reflected the social atmosphere of the 1980s, such as Agency for National Security Planning, which under the name of “This is for the benefit of the country,” imprisoning and torturing innocent people to force them to turn lies into truth.

The nature of the two works is different. Although “Emergency Declaration” is about national aircraft and passengers, people all over the world who went through the pandemic can relate to it. But “Hunt” is not easy to comprehend if you do not know the S.Korean history, even though the story unfolds in various countries such as the United States, Japan, and Thailand. It is the reason why foreign press commented “The story is too much to follow” during the Cannes Film Festival.

Story development is also different. “Emergency Declaration” focused on depicting people who faced emergency after specifying the terrorist. But “Hunt” lets the audiences to infer who the spy is until the end of the movie.

Film critic Jeon Chan-il said, "The target audience for the two films is not so different," but also said, "'Emergency Declaration' is noted as disaster film and blockbuster, while 'Hunt' gives the audience a lot to think about based on modern Korean history.” (END)

New film draws mixed responses from audiences

By Lee Gyu-lee | 2022-08-04

The star-studded disaster film "Emergency Declaration," one of the most-anticipated flicks of this year, has finally hit movie theaters, Wednesday, after a long delay due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The film's director Han Jae-rim, whose previous works include the 2013 historical film "The Face Reader" and 2017 crime film "The King," said that he wanted to deliver a message of hope through the disaster film.

"I wanted to talk about hope ― that if we come together in a catastrophic situation, we can get through it," Han said in an interview with The Korea Times, Wednesday.

"When I wrote the script and started filming, I had no idea that the coronavirus pandemic would come. The film shows conflicts that are also seen in this pandemic … I wanted to cast light on healing and hope while also portraying humanity undergoing changes from psychological fear."

The blockbuster film revolves around a terrorist attack on a flight bound for Hawaii from Korea. A terrorist threat is made online, and as detective In-ho (Song Kang-ho) finds out that the suspect (Im Si-wan) was on the flight, a passenger dies suddenly on the plane.

While people on board, including Jae-hyuk (Lee Byung-hun) and Hyun-soo (Kim Nam-gil), try to deal with the rising tension and panic erupting among passengers, In-ho joins the government authorities' operation to save the lives of all on board.

The film, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival last year, opened on Wednesday at the top of the local box office, with about 336,000 ticket sales.

The director expressed excitement about the film's long-awaited opening. "It took years to release. We screened it to audiences at Cannes last year and received feedback. But it feels like another premiere. Meeting Korean audiences feels incomparably exciting and nerve-wracking," he said.

Han shared that the primary focus in filming the scenes was to make them as realistic as possible. The film comprises first-person point-of-view shots and scenes filmed on a gimbal set for action sequences and turbulence on the airplane.

"A large number of people get on an airplane. So there were many limitations to making the scenes realistic. The space between the seats was tight and it was hard for the actors playing passengers and the production crew to all get on the plane and film," he said. "So to portray a major catastrophic situation, we built a gimbal set. For authenticity, the cinematographer went onto the set and captured each character with a handheld camera."

Despite the film's much-anticipated release, it already is getting mixed responses from moviegoers. The director expressed that although he understands the split reactions, he hopes audiences will empathize with each character.

"I feel there can be different opinions from my own. There has been varied feedback ― some understood my intention while for others, I wondered how they got such an impression. For example, since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, some people didn't really mind eating out, but others were scared of going to restaurants and would dine in," he said.

"'Emergency Declaration' also has characters that can be interpreted in different ways. So I do hope that these figures would come through as understandable through the film. I would like the film to lead the audiences to think 'it's possible to act like that,' instead of thinking 'why they would act like that?'"

Summer in 2022, The Hottest Big 4 Have Appeared!

by Hellen Park | Jul 19, 2022

In 2022, the Korean theater district filled with audiences again is hotter than ever after enduring the COVID-19 Pandemic.

4CC35725-10F2-45DD-B542-719FE47B691E.jpg

It is no exaggeration to say that Korean BIG 4 films this summer are the best lineup ever in terms of size and issue. Let’s focus on analyzing the power of Korean BIG 4 films, which burn up the summer of 2022 with their distinct charms as weapons.

BIG 1_Alienoid
Director Choi Donghoon, the Master of Two ’10-million-viewer Movies,’ Has Opened a New World of Fusion SF that Transcends Time and Space

Director Choi Donghoon, the representative ‘Box Office Hit Master’ in Korea, will release his new film, Alienoid, in 7 years. It can be a new world that has compiled Choi Donghoon's genre experience. Alienoid conveys fantastic imaginations of the past, modernity, fantasy, science fiction, Taoist wizards, and robots in the movie. The 1st part of Alienoid, which will be released on July 20, deals with the adventures that take place at the end of the Goryeo Dynasty when the Taoist wizards trying to take the legendary sword and the figures chasing alien prisoners imprisoned in the human bodies in 2022 are connected through ‘the Door of Time.’ Director Choi Donghoon said, "I wanted to talk about an alien story that I have loved since childhood. Here, I wanted the world of ‘Korean wizardry or sorcery’ that I love to meet the SF world where spaceships and aliens appear. I think the audience will enjoy a new pleasure that arises when the two disparate worlds combine,” revealing his ambition.

5 years ago, Director Choi Donghoon planned a series of the 1st and the 2nd part to complete the scale of this huge storyline. From sorcerous actions to spacecraft, aliens, and robots flying in downtown Seoul, it took 387 days of the longest production period in Korean cinema history to complete the visuals. In addition, as the secrets of many characters that seem to have no contact at all are revealed one by one, the detailed storytelling, which eventually gathers into one story, is also the strength of the Alienoid series.

The lineup of the actors who participated in this huge world is also interesting. Ryu Junyeol, a Taoist wizard and troublemaker, Kim Taeri, a woman who shoots a ‘pistol’ in the Goryeo Dynasty, Kim Woobin, an alien manager in the future world, So Jisub, a detective chasing aliens, Yum Jungah and Jo Woojin, the best Taoist witch and wizard in Goryeo, Kim Euisung, a man with a mysterious mask, Lee Hanee, a future tracker, Shin Junggeun and Lee Sihoon, the mysterious cat duo, etc., a variety of actors transcending generations have been cast. Also, the production staff members are spectacular. Production Designer Ryu Seonghee, who won the Cannes’ Vulcan Award, Production Designer Lee Hajun, who won the SAG for PARASITE, and Dexter Studio, which participated in the Along with the Gods series and Space Sweepers, are in charge of the visuals of the SF and fantasy of Alienoid. A new world we have never seen before will be opened in Korean theaters in 2022.

BIG 2_HANSAN: RISING DRAGON
The Prequel of The Admiral: ROARING CURRENTS, Korean Box Office's Unprecedented Box Office Hit with 17 Million Viewers, Put the Turtle Ship for a More Powerful Naval Battle

In 2014, Director Kim Hanmin's The Admiral: Roaring Currents became a legend when it broke all the box office records of Korean cinema upon its release. The record of 17.61 million spectators set by The Admiral: Roaring Currents is a milestone that will not be easily broken, but Director Kim Hanmin challenges the record with another ‘victorious war at sea.’ In HANSAN: RISING DRAGON, which will be released on July 29, the main character is Admiral Yi Sunsin in his 40s, who goes to the battlefield only to protect the people in the early days of the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592.

From the time he made The Admiral: Roaring Currents, Director Kim Hanmin planned a trilogy project about Admiral Yi Sunsin: the Battle of Hansan in 1592, Myeongnyang in 1597, and Noryang in 1598. Through these three naval battles, Director Kim Hanmin began the challenge of portraying different ‘Yi Sunsin’ and finished filming both HANSAN: RISING DRAGON and NORYANG: THE SEA OF DEATH (working title) even under the COVID-19 situation. Director Kim said, "The three naval battles show the different images of Admiral Yi Sunsin. If he is a brave general in The Admiral: Roaring Currents, a wise one in HANSAN: RISING DRAGON, and a prudent one in NORYANG: THE SEA OF DEATH. The Battle of Hansan was the most overwhelming victory during the 7-year war of the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592. I wanted to show that victory.”

For Yi Sunsin’s rising, Actor Park Haeil starts the beginning. Director Kim Hanmin expressed his confidence in him, saying, "The wise image from Park Haeil’s eyes is exactly the image of Admiral Yi Sunsin that I wanted to depict." Along with Park Haeil, who plays wise Yi Sunsin, the powerful box office point of ‘HANSAN’ is the appearance of the Turtle Ship. It is said that it was like a legendary monster in the sea, and the dignity of the Turtle Ship that scared the Japanese navy during the Japanese Invasion of Korea in 1592, will finally be revealed in HANSAN: RISING DRAGON. To convey the catharsis of the victory as much as possible, ‘HANSAN’ vividly embodies the images of the Turtle Ship and the Hakikjin formation (a crane wing formation) on the screen, which have been piled up in the veil. Since there are few historical materials left, it is expected what kinds of spectacular scenes will be made by the Turtle Ship, which has been completed with cinematic imagination, and the Hakikjin tactics, which was called the ‘Castle on the Sea.’

BIG 3_EMERGENCY DECLARATION
There Has Never Been More Spectacular Casting. Korea's First Aviation Disaster Blockbuster with the Star-studded Cast Will Fly.

Director Han Jaerim's Emergency Declaration has attracted great attention in two ways since it was invited to the out-of-competition section at the 2021 Festival de Cannes. One is the star-studded cast among Korean actors, which could not be more spectacular than this. First of all, Actor Song Kangho is the backbone of the film, who won the Best Actor for Broker at the 75th Festival de Cannes, and who starred in PARASITE, the winner of the Oscar and the Palme d'Or. He plays a detective trying to save everyone from the unprecedented disaster. Global star Lee Byunghun plays the father who boards the plane for his daughter, and Jeon Doyeon, the ‘Queen of Cannes,’ who won the Cannes Best Actress for Secret Sunshine, plays the Minister of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport. From Kim Namgil, the co-pilot who has to land the plane safely, Kim Sojin, a veteran flight attendant, and Park Haejoon from the Blue House, to Im Siwan, a mysterious young man at the center of the disaster, the film boasts a super-luxury casting. The fact that the two actors, the winners of the Best Actor and the Best Actress at Cannes, appear in one movie is an amazing attraction.

Another charming point is that it is the first 'aviation disaster blockbuster' in Korea. The mission of Emergency Declaration is to show the most realistic aviation disaster. Due to the nature of the ‘aviation disaster’ occurring on the plane, the key is to show the situation in a tense manner that numerous figures are connected on the ground and in the sky. Director Han Jaerim challenged the entire set to rotate 360 degrees using the actual body and parts of a plane for the most realistic spectacular ‘aviation disaster.’ Thanks to the challenge, the actors confidently said, "I was able to express the situation for real as if I were in an actual aviation disaster."

Director Han Jaerim said, "I was proposed to direct a movie about an airplane terror case 10 years ago. 10 years have passed since then, and we also have experienced small and big disasters for real. In the process, the COVID-19 Pandemic hit us, too. I was sure what to depict through the movie. I hope this movie will be a comfort and hope for all of us who have proudly endured the pandemic disaster for more than 2 years.”
Emergency Declaration will be released on August 3.

BIG 4_HUNT
The world's Hottest Actor, Lee Jungjae's Directorial Debut
He Has Returned as a Box Office Hunter Following Cannes’ Favorable Reviews

HUNT is Actor Lee Jungjae's directorial debut and has been in the spotlight from the production stage. And after the huge success of the Netflix series Squid Game in 2021, he is receiving even greater expectations. Since his debut as an actor in 1993, Actor Lee Jungjae has been a representative Korean actor for 30 years, crossing TV series and movies and is standing as a global star through the Netflix series Squid Game. Following Hollywood's Golden Globe Awards, the Screen Actors Guild Awards, and the Critics’ Choice Awards, he has been nominated for the Emmy Awards, now called the Academy of TV Series. As such, the global film industry is paying keen attention to Director Lee Jungjae's debut film, HUNT.

Director Lee Jungjae wants to convey both the pleasure of a commercial film and the message to the audience through his first directing film. He said, “I thought about the reason the audience should watch HUNT. We focused on the pleasure of the spy action blockbuster in the genre, but we also wanted to talk about the 'wrong beliefs' that make us constantly confront and conflict by reflecting on the times of the 1980s," revealing the purpose of his direction.

As he intended, the director succeeds in capturing both the exhilaration of spy action and the tense psychological warfare of the two men who are confronted by false beliefs. HUNT shows the high-level psychological warfare between two spies, who have to find spies hiding in organizations in the 1980s. For each reason, the two, who were swept away by the huge incident of ‘Korea's No. 1 assassination operation,’ are in an urgent situation where they die as prey if they fail to become hunters. For this tension, Actors Lee Jungjae and Jung Woosung reunited for the first time since City of the Rising Sun, creating an amazing sense of immersion. The film also didn’t miss the excitement of the spy action blockbuster. From restoring the vibe of the 1980s as it was vividly, car chasing scenes running through the center of the city, the scene of a large-scale bombing, to Lee Jungjae and Jung Woosung’s hand-to-hand fight without sparing their bodies, the film is like an assorted gift set. HUNT, the successful debut film of Director Lee Jungjae, who did not miss the message and genre pleasure, will be released in Korea on August 10.

Hansan: Rising Dragon maintained its top spot in the box office this weekend, marking its second week at No.1 above Emergency Declaration. The movie attracted 1,156,894 spectators from August 5th to the 7th, recording a cumulative audience of 4,598,529. Such a figure is by far the best performance achieved by the big three titles released this summer. Although it didn’t have large promotional events or a fanbase, the movie is currently enjoying its unbeatable streak as good word of mouth helped boost the movie. Fans are already excited to hear more about the final part of the director’s trilogy about Admiral Lee Sun Shin.

However, Emergency Declaration showed weak performance on its opening weekend. The movie gained a cumulative audience of 1,398,281 after pulling in 817,094 viewers over the weekend. With the outstanding acting of the main cast – Siwan, Kim Nam Gil, and Kim So Jin – receiving favorable reviews, the movie is also doing quite well on IMAX and 4DX screens. However, things are cloudy for the film as it is currently garnering split reviews and facing another box office battle with Lee Jung Jae and Jung Woo Sung’s upcoming movie, Hunt, this week.

Meanwhile, Top Gun: Maverick, Minions 2, and Pororo Movie_Dragon Castle Adventure ranked third, fourth and fifth, respectively. Decision to Leave came in No.6, drawing 46,430 spectators (a cumulative audience of 1,775,050), and Alienoid: Part One came in No.7, attracting 42,114 viewers (a cumulative audience of 1,496,937).

‘Hansan’ Holds Off ‘Emergency Declaration’ for Busy Korea Box Office Weekend

By Patrick Frater | Aug 7, 2022 6:46pm PT

“Emergency Declaration,” a timely Korean-made action thriller, flew to an opening weekend of $6.5 million. But it was old-fashioned naval actioner “Hansan: Rising Dragon” that stayed afloat at the top of the South Korean box office for a second week.

“Hansan,” a sequel to a 2014 record breaker, earned $9.18 million from over 1,600 screens, according to data from Kobis, the tracking service operated by the Korean Film Council (Kofic). That was a week on week decrease of 32%. Its market share fell from 60% to 45%. Still, after 12 days in Korean cinemas, “Hansan” has accumulated $36.0 million and is now the fourth highest grossing film of the year to date.

“Emergency Declaration,” which had a special screening in Cannes last year, and had been rescheduled several times, finally got to fly on Wednesday. It took off strongly for distributor Showbox and topped the daily charts on Wednesday and Thursday. But the film flew into turbulence over the weekend when it came off second with $6.50 million from 1,718 screens and a market share of 32%. Over five days, it accumulated a quick $10.8 million.  Imax reported that the film scored $488,000 on Imax screens in Korea, the fifth strongest opening for a Korean film on the Imax circuit.

The effect of two high-performing local films was to keep cinemas busy. Nationwide Korea’s aggregate box office was $20.4 million, following a $22.0 million aggregate the previous weekend.

“Top Gun Maverick” earned $1.58 million in third place, extending its cumulative to a sky high $60.0 million since take-off on June 22, 2022.

“Minions: The Rise of Gru” earned $1.34 million in fourth place, extending its three-week cumulative to $14.7 million.

Korean-made animation, “Pororo Movie – Dragon Castle Adventure” added $523,000 in its second weekend for an 11-day cumulative of $2.63 million.

Art-house detective thriller “Decision to Leave” added $393,000, building its case to $14.1 million after six weekends on release.

Korean sci-fi actioner “Alienoid” took $352,000 in its third weekend. Its cumulative now stands at $12.0 million.

New release Japanese animation “Doraemon the Movie: Nobita’s Little Star Wars 2021” took $156,000 over the weekend and $265,000 over its opening five days in eighth place. Ninth spot belonged to “Detective Conan: The Bride of Halloween” with $89,000 over the weekend and $3.53 since release on July 13.

“The Hunt,” the 1980s-set espionage thriller directed by “Squid Game” star Lee Jung-jae will open officially on Wednesday (Aug. 10, 2022). But its previews on 12 screens were good enough for $48,000 and tenth place over the weekend.
