I just hope that means the movie will have some passion in it- and this time @budgerie I do mean bed scenes

Hmm...the english translation is ......ahh, why is there a $$ sign there? I'm thinking his (onscreen) wife spends a lot of money in this movie & he kills her? Hahaha...there goes my imagination.

Oh, another thing about the new drama, I hope the team don't give him a clean look if he's going to war. You know, these days the newer generation of actors, they all look too clean IMO. Even after going for war, the face & hair still look as good as it should be.

Me too... How great it would be if JH would finally officially get involved in those aspects too?

I hope the Director will give him free hand to explore his character but at the same time, rein him in a bit otherwise he might go overboard & end up like WOL.

Me too. I am planning a rewatch of the show, leap jumping from one BW scene to the other :)

Me too. But it's so tedious just to look for BW scenes. Because the other guys got lots of screen time too. Just need to keep FF.

3 hours ago, Biology Lesson said:

The result of this was that JH didn't have enough time to sit with the production and tweak the script, so he did that on the fly, resulting in his character not matching anyone else in the show or the plot.

Sorry ah, i know the drama is long over. But i couldn't continue because #1 I couldn't understand why he is grieving for so long. From what I understand with that 1 scene with his fiance, it's not like he was loving towards her. If anything, I thought he was cordial but at the same time distant towards her. I felt like there's a disconnection somewhere.

In FTLY we got passion, and I also liked the falling in love process in BM and in Robbers- that is, I trust JH to bring in the passion when need be :)

Oops! I misunderstood. I thought you meant bed scenes passion. Lol.

Oh, for sure a general in this case :)... It's funny how desperately we're trying to imagine any twist on the premise of the show to prevent it from what the synopsis gave us- all politics! On the one hand I trust JH to give us an interesting character that will be beyond anything we can imagine, like he did in MC and TMWYS, I just hope that the script will be half as good as what JH will produce

I don't doubt JH at all. But I doubt the script, the directing if anything. Let it not be just a political plot. I fully agree, MC was good & it would be better if it was just on BW. Hahaha! I can do without the rest of them. As for TMWYS, I abandoned the drama somewhere in the middle. Only to watch the ending.

Oh, I hope not a wife! Established relationships are usually boring in shows, like in Bad papa. I want passion! So I hope whoever JH's character will be, general or not, I hope he will fall in love during the show... God, anything that will prevent the show from being all politics!

@Ding77@Biology LessonNo, I don't mean that kind of romantic scenes with wife. You're not going to get that in k drama. We already don't get it in modern k drama, what more a historical k drama (hahaha)!

What I mean is, a woman who could support him in his work (ambition), someone he could talk to as his confidante, someone who could share his woes. More i want to see is the softer side of his character (be it a general or court official). So we could see what his character is experiencing - his inner struggles, etc....

Just like in MC when BW fan his sleeping daughter, that was a softer side of BW, only too bad that softer side of BW wasn't explored. Just that 1 miserable scene.

Without it, the drama might just be about politics.

I'm just going to fantasize here - if his character is a General, most of the time he would be wearing the armour suit with hair bun up (right)? If he's a Senior Court Official, he'll be wearing that long robe with that silly looking hat...which do you prefer? Hahaha....I prefer the armour suit.

Pil Joo wearing costumes now...haha! I don't mind, if he's given lots of screen time. If he'll be some sort of a General, he'll definitely have a wife. Let's hope we have some scenes of him with his wife so that it isn't so boring just looking at all the court officials.

Hi all! How's everyone? Wow, I have so many pages to catch up on!

Nirvana in Fire was super popular when it aired. It still is now? But it's a difficult drama to watch. I got confused just watching the characters initially but indeed the 1st few eps will determine if you like to continue or not. Now when I looked back, I didn't like some of the cast acting.

I usually don't comment about JH's marriage, but this baffles me- why doesn't he ever come with anything his wife taught him? it's clear JH's wife has absolutely nothing to do with what he cook.

Even if his wife taught him any recipe, he's not going to broadcast it to the public. He just want to avoid topic relating to his personal life.

I think Jang Nara has gotten to show and polish her skills more in later works

I honestly think all actors/actress have acting abilities only if they're paired up with the right guy or the right girl. JNR was good in FTLY but when I saw her in VIP, I didn't like it. Definitely not her but maybe the script, the directing, the chemistry, etc, or maybe I compared her with the acting in FTLY. However, it's a different type of genre.

You mean the format or what? I never watch a K-version but with Malaysia franchise you need to guess from the contestant who was truly a singer. It was a fun show actually with the judges who tried to search who was imposter among the contestants to eliminate them. Sometimes, their bad singing totally hilarious to see even I doubt some of them really bad at singing or just fake it for the sake of the show.

Taiwan had a show similar to this. The "fake" singer & the original singer will sing 1 by 1, in a room, the audience cannot see who is in which room, just judge based on their singing. And I tell you, the "fake" singers aren't that fake yo. Sounds like the original singer.

I do wonder- I know that LDH said that JH was very uncomfortable filming this scene, that he was constantly trying to avert his face from the camera, but, after two projects that he already did with LDH, why did he suddenly feel so uncomfortable? I mean, in Robbers, there is the BTS footage of the promo in which we see them kissing over and over again... What happened here?!

I think maybe he was uncomfortable because he had to be rough in this kiss scene. He had to grab her in for a kiss. And it's true that both of them were so "off" here. The bed scene was even worse. We didn't get to see the bts for this scene (did we) so perhaps they both had already done it so many times & couldn't get it correct.

A chinese actor once mentioned in interview, that for kiss scene, it's best to get it "approved" by the Director at the first time. If have to do it over & over again, it gets awkward.

But I dropepd My country. I saw it when it aired and it had alot of hype but it somehow didn't ignite chemistry between the leads and it had recognizable names on the cast Jang Hyuk, Seolhyun and Woo Do-Hwan. I know JH was not the lead but I was unfamiliar with the ML Yang se-jong they should have switched between him and Woo Do-Hwan. The bromance didn't quite do it for me nor the romance. The story itself was to vast. I like Seolhyun and Woo Do-Hwan. I agree JH was awesome in his part.

IKR. I found the 2 guys acting - mediocre.

You shouldn't have dropped TMWYS tho it becomes a rollarcoaster. I thought Eum Moon-suk as the rural cop did a phenomenal job to make it a good dance with JH's character. His an underrated actor imo. His recently also cast in Yoo Ha's movie pipeline. I hope to see him getting lead roles soon. Just from that performance it should automatically promote him to lead role

I dropped it at episode 9 or 10. I really got bored.

I will admit to completely skipping the first episodes of MC that didn't have JH in them directly to when JH became more prominent. I think most of us did that. JH's plot line with his father and brothers was amazing!

I think I ff episode 1-3. Only episode 4 than Bang Won appeared I think. Can't really remember but it was that scene which I like, he reproached his father - that scene where he dropped his sword & knelt down infront of his father & got up before his father gave him permission to stand up. I just love that untidy hair & acting there.

I haven't actully watched work of love yet but it is on my watchlist. He could play a gangster or an eccentric persona with that look.

I definitely don't recommend Wok of Love. Have you watched Beautiful Mind? This one is good if you like doctor kind of plot. JH acting here is good. He acts as a man without emotion.

Have you watched Money Flower? Have you watched My Country? I recommend you to watch MC. Even though JH isn't the lead, his acting as Bang Won nailed it. And you must watch Money Flower too.

    Quote

When if they focused on Bang won, the story would have been so much more coherent. If it was just about his relationships with his father, brothers and wife- we would have gotten an epic show!

Exactly! It would have been good. The bad writing in MC + the bad editing. Remember we were so upset about the fighting scene which made BW hair looked a mess but we didn't know why.

    Quote

Exactly! We got no justification for OHJ's grief,

For a girl to be able to be OHJ fiance, she should be someone who could "warm" OHJ heart. The drama should show a different side of OHJ - his softer side when he's with his fiance & the deep love they shared which caused him to grief for so long but the drama didn't tell us what we saw.

I actually wouldn't recommend Wok of Love- it one of the only JH shows that I dropped. JH is not the lead, and the main FL is extra annoying

I didn't drop WOL but I ff watching only JH scenes. I get terribly annoyed with FL came on scene. Not her ya. Her screen character + her hair. But I dropped TMWYS. I actually got bored.

I meant the premise of the show, that sounds silly to me- "Joseon Exorcist" is a horror show,

Oh ok. Thanks for explaining. But I don't think he'll want to act as Bang Won again unless a really good script which I doubt.

1 hour ago, Biology Lesson said:

in both the leads were fictional characters... So instead of focusing on the super interesting real story, the production made up a fictional story, with fictional characters that were so much less interesting...

Frankly, I also dislike it when esp in historical drama, the production moved away too much from the actual history. MC would have been "perfect" if it concentrated on BW.

Right... I was so disappointed that that was the only scene we got with her...

I think you're right as you've always mentioned before, there's nothing "intimate" in k drama (hahaha)! I mean, we don't need to go overboard with the romance but have to make it realistic right? From the way I see OHJ behaviour (quite cold towards her), why would he grief for so long?

18 minutes ago, Wis dom said:

I would actully like them both to run it back. Do another drama together this time a romantic drama perhaps a melo with a different concept. I think there is potential in this pairing and it should be explored. I am all up for them running it back.

Actually with OHJ that type of look, he should act as a gangster. I mean, his gangster role or ex gangster role in WOL was to me comical. He looked more cartoon than gangster.

Sorry am slow, I don't get you. In what kind of setup?

    3 hours ago, dramafan33 said:

Maybe as a sorta continuation to My Country's version, playing him as King and featuring his wife, who was an interesting strong and smart woman.

In both BW that he played, his wife didn't exist. Hahaha! In history, she was smart/ambitious (political ambitious) who assisted BW to ascend the throne. But we had none of these in EOL & in MC.

One of the missed opportunities for me of the show was that they didn't actually show why OHJ fell in love with his fiancé in the first place, being the complex character that he was. They didn't delve enough into that past of his...

And if you remember the 1 scene which they had, she lying down on the sofa when he came home, he was not "lovey dovey" as a young couple would. I thought he was polite but distant.

@budgerie Ok, some things are fresh in my mind because I rewatched the first 4 eps but others are fuzzy memories. Ill put stuff in spoilers just in case there is a new fan lurking

      Reveal hidden contents

In the first few eps we see that Eun Cheon is the older brother, but not too much older than Bucheon, but it seems Kyung Cheon was younger than Bucheon. I think the difference in age between Piljoo/Eun Cheon and Bucheon can't be too big since we look almost the same age as teenagers.

So Bucheon was the middle child. Like you said, it seems the husband never touched Mal Ran, and if I recall correctly, the husband knew Bucheon wasn't his son (I think this was revealed later in the drama) Another recollection I have, is of Mal Ran holding Bucheon as a baby, spying on Piljoo's mom and seeing that she was pregnant with Kyung Cheon (I will confirm this when I get to that scene).

Mal Ran's husband did know Bucheon. In episode 3 or 4, when they held the memorial service for the husband, Bucheon remembers the big candies that his father gave him. He gave the same candies to his other kids too. Bucheon and Piljoo bonded over this, despite the fact that Bucheon didn't know the true origin of Piljoo.

I concur that Piljoo took long with his revenge because he wasn't going to accomplish much when he was younger. Once he decided what his revenge was going to be, give everything to Mal Ran and then take it all away, the whole thing was set in motion but it would require a lot of patience and determination. It is pretty exaggerated, not super realistic or plausible, but I accepted it from the moment I realized Money Flower was like a "masterpiece makjang" or masterpiece soap opera. This outrageous premise was part of that. Another reason would be that, Piljoo was relishing his revenge as much as he was loathing himself and that family. One would think, wouldn't he want to get it over with as soon as possible? but he didn't. He was savouring the whole process in a, well, unhealthy/toxic way.  But that was Piljoo, he was sick, broken, twisted, otherwise he would not have been able to go through what he did, he would never consider throwing someone as naive as Mo Hyun to the lion's den (and this without even counting that she saved his life once!) And remember how during first eps, how he had some regrets and almost called the whole thing off (for love, for compassion for Mo Hyun) but then reverted back and literally planted all those false memories into Mo Hyun's head, making her think, it was Bucheon who saved her and took her home when she was drunk? I mean, how sick was that? Piljoo was dangerous and borderline psychopath tbh, but I loved him lol

Many thanks for refreshing my memory too!

    Spoiler

Whenever I watched MF, I would skip the beginning episodes. Not really interested at the young Pil Joo though. Lol. Yes I recalled that scene (now) which Mal Ran carried a baby spying on her husb mistress. Wait...the mistress was preg with Kyung Cheon. Boo Cheon was a toddler or baby. Eun Cheong was about 8 years old right? Or 7 years old? Meaning if as a teenager Eun Cheong was 15 years old when he tried to kill Mal Ran, Boo Cheon would have been around 8 - 9 years old. But onscreen, both are like same age already. Puzzled?

Oh ya, now you mentioned I remember, that BC said his father gave him the candy. But at which episode did he find out that BC wasn't his baby? I totally forgot about seeing this scene. Blame it on my aging memory.

Ok, because PJ is acted by JH so PJ is not hated even though PJ did many "bad" things. Hahaha! But putting that aside, PJ is really despicable. Using MH as his revenge when she saved his life. That episode in the grass when he wanted to approach MH than Mal Ran slapped him & told him to think twice or what...I wonder if he had gotten to her (if Mal Ran didn't intercept), what would he have told MH? I don't think he would come clean, I think he would cook up some excuses to make it like he was there to take photos of birds. I wished that scene was allowed to go through...cos I'm curious what would PJ say to MH.

As for the ending, IDK is it out of respect for k culture or out of respect for elders, grandpa was in coma & Mal Ran gone crazy. This is so anti climax, I would love to see the both of them being handcuff & end up doing jail term.

The famous scene where he closes the door

Yes that sickening scene. If it's the Writer intention to puzzle us, it succeeded. All of us watching the drama would say NO to a sexual relationship with Mal Ran. But when looking at the way Mal Ran behaves when she's alone with PJ, like giving him the new watch, the way she touches him. And when she went to PJ room to have a drink after PJ succeeded in getting the fund back from her sister-in-law, the way Mal Ran touches PJ face & the way PJ touches her hand before handing her the wine glass....I mean, it seemed to suggest a hidden relationship.

3 hours ago, Biology Lesson said:

he was back to just being her driver/henchman. Did they say when she broke off the relationship and why he remained so loyal to her?

You're right, the writing for MF wasn't as detailed as we would want it to be. Even if the drama didn't show the sexual relationship between Mal Ran & Driver, but at least give a brief explanation for audience to understand.

I'm just thinking....ok, Eun Cheon is older than Boo Cheon. Which means Mal Ran husb never have slept with her frequently enough for her to produce a son. If he already has a mistress he loves, he doesn't need to sleep with Mal Ran that regularly. (Hahaha). But Mal Ran needed to produce a son, an heir. If she has no son, all the good stuff will go to Boo Cheon cousin.

And the question is here, how did the Driver ended up sleeping with her? Was it her request or was it both were drunk? The driver is loyal because his son is in her hands. He wanted to be able to stay close to his son & be part of Boo Cheon's growing up.

I just cannot remember if when Boo Cheon was born, Mal Ran husb already died? If he already died, perhaps when he was alive he didn't even sleep with Mal Ran at all. With her husb dead, no one can dispute that Boo Cheon's not a Jang. Anyone remembers Kyung Cheon age? Same age as Boo Cheon is it?

3 hours ago, Biology Lesson said:

My main problem with Money Flower was them making her mentally unstable and so reliant on him. That, to me, made the long game he was playing completely redundant. I can think of several different ways he could have driven her to a mental break down, without waiting more than 20 years for his revenge. If she was strong and cunning, I could have understood why it took him so long to destroy her...

Me too finds it too "easy" his revenge. It was literally smooth sailing with the exception of NMH but she wasn't such a big hurdle to jump. I think it needed 20 years because he had to "grow up" first, get the necessary education/degree, work in the organisation & get the people to trust him (esp grandpa). Pil Joo literally handles everything from A-Z in the Jang household. This takes time (alot of time) to climb up to that position.

And during that era, once the emperor or king has bedded a lady, she would not be allowed to leave & go wandering in the wilderness or whatever, just so incase she is preg with the King's child. It's the King's child that matters.  (Oh but I can't really remember the story already).

Nice!! But they photoshopped his hairy legs..

Girlie (hairless) legs & his boobs looked weird, like cardboard.

WOL was a complete waste of JH's time. I wish that instead of that show, he'd have taken advantage of Lee Mi Suk's availability and done a show with her being his love interest, and not his mother, of all things... So idiotic!

Is it me or you also feel it that LMS acting in WOL was bland....

I wish JH will stop appearing in drama that - sorry how should I phrase it? Like for instance, WOL, play 2nd to the ML & in MC, play 2nd to the 2 young chaps. Can he stop being a mentor??

Ok, don't blast me. I'm selfish. I want my Pil Joo back. Not Ji Sung please. Hahaha!

I think the writing made her extra annoying, and the fact that JH's character love for her was never justified, made me hate her even more. But I agree- the actress didn't help here at all...

The writing, her acting + her screen character & her HAIR !!! :confounded:

@Biology Lesson I blame Sidus entirely for the Eve drama. They sent him to China as a cash cow instead of consolidating his career in Korea. Absolute greedy morons, basically. I think JH has much more control of his career now in comparison to at that time.

Exactly! That Eve drama was a misfit & that hairstyle he had in the Eve drama!! Worse than curtain hairstyle!

I remember hearing or reading that there were plans (not sure if his or the agency) for him to go to a temple or something like that to get formally trained in martial arts but I don’t remember why the plans changed and/or when that was. It would’ve probably changed the direction of his career but I wonder if we would’ve lost Lee Gun, Lee Young Oh, Piljoo etc

Yes, was it Wudang Mountains in China?? And for 5 years!! Luckily he didn't go or I won't get to see Pil Joo...sob sob!!

@azureblue7 Hopefully but at the same time, as soon as a drama is announced Ill start obsessing about who is the writer? Who is the PD? Why how what when who? Etc

At the rate that we're missing him, any drama also can right? At most we just FF. But please no another WOL.

But actually, the FL lead (her screen character or her acting) annoyed me terribly in WOL. If changed to another actress maybe it won't be so bad??

Was JH faking it to make the others feel better?!

I think he was just faking it so that others will not feel like awkward. Knots (the different types with its name) were learnt during military days so unless the other guys have forgotten? We all know JH doesn't forget things (easily) once he learnt it. But knowing him, he doesn't want all the "attention" on him I guess - that would make other guys look inferior.

In SK, once the guy completed his 2 years of army service, he would need to serve 8 years of reservist. IDK how they're called up, yearly basis perhaps for a period of time. So for most guys JH age, things of the military would have been forgotten long ago (hahaha)!
