Just saw the episode and it was wonderful (including the back of PBG's head during the kiss ;)).

I'm still thinking about those masks.  I really do think that SH's mask is Green Man.  And I loved that JH was the Tin Man (after all, that character just wanted to have a heart).

:joy: I saw what you did there lol.

That's a great find about Green Man!!  I like the connection to nature that it has, especially considering all the discussion there's been about SooHyun and her connection to nature in the drama

  2. I couldn't really figure out what SooHyun's mask was supposed to be?  Does anyone have any clues?  The only thing that comes to mind is the Man in the Iron Mask?  But that doesn't really fit the drama...

Also re: the kiss... it was beyond lovely!  The way both of them were so tearful and overjoyed and just so into each other still has me .  I just didn't want to see the back of PBG's head as one of the shots lol.

  3. Ugh.  WooSeok is the textbook definition of entitlement.  And yet... I still feel sorry him!  This guy is so twisted and damaged he thinks he sees a sign that it's time for him to pursue SooHyun just because JinHyuk is being sent to Sokcho.  It's as though he is so infatuated with the "idea" of SooHyun, it makes him incapable of understanding how every word she speaks to him is just dripping with disdain.

I was watching them live & got confused since many ppl says that there's no preview for ep 9 when I clearly saw it at the end of ep 8 which I remember because it shows Kim Jin Hyuk gone missing.

Thankfully I find ppl who posted the preview, so I'm not hallucinating then :sweatingbullets:

What happen to KJH? Where did he go?

    <cut video out>

I hope he is okay TT

Ahh!  Thank you for posting.  I was wondering if I was going crazy!  Also!  What the hell writer!???!  Why would JinHyuk go missing? :rage:

    Thanks to you all..

Just looking at those pics made me cry...

SHK and PBG are so good... what if other actor/actress were casted to portray JH and SH, will it be like this?  A big NO....

This is the only drama that made awake waiting for eng sub. If eng sub comes out just like last night's episode, that will 2 hrs from now... Whooa, zombie-like mode again tomorrow.

Same here lol.  I'm watching a lot of other dramas (well that's a lie, I'll be watching all the episodes I've missed next week during Boyfriend's break :yum:) but this is the only one where I'm willing to get up crazy early to watch the livestream and then bounce around my office  until lunchtime comes and I can watch with subs.  Lucky for me my boss isn't around lol.

Compared to ep.7 which attacked my heart to be gloomy what the fate KJH had to bear from the chaebeol's careless action, ep.8 is like a sad with hope to develop from feeling like to express love profoundly.

KJH's mom and family could make audiences cry from just watching them be together before his beloved son will have to be far away from the devil chaebeol.

KJH's eyes can say many misarable feeling even he tried to smile as same as CSH's downcast smile when they were together before KJH's leaving.

As I wrote here before that I objected K-drama to sell skinship/kiss scenes without reasonable story/script.

However, Encounter has satisfied with story/script that KJH&CSH's skinships are to express their deep feeling for each other when they were threatened by Chabeol. KJH&CSH's kiss scene is to burst their intense longing to each other. Audiences can realize what KJH&CSH feel in each moment spendidly.   CSH's mask has been selected by KJH.

Again and again, I am very glad that Park Bo Gum and Song Hye Kyo selected this Encounter project to come back after a couple years of break even I used to object this selection at the very beginning.

Interesting!  And how curious that JinHyuk chose the Tin Man mask for himself!  Isn't the Tin Man, the man who wished for a heart?  It's been years since I watched the Wizard of Oz...

That’s what I am saying! Who shows a kiss from those weird angles and it wasn’t even like the actors were awkward that they needed to chicken out like that.

Everyone send messages to TVN to show us the kiss with proper angles in the beginning of the next episode! We have TWO WEEKS to make it happen!

  I am 1000% supporting this plan!!!!  I mean really-- how could the lead up to the kiss be hotter than the kiss itself?  At least it was in my opinion lol.

  8. @bebebisous33 Ah.  Here is where we diverge in opinions then... I think he's changed somewhat, but not a lot.  I think he wants a win-win situation for both himself and his daughter, which I suppose is not inherently bad lol.  But while I want him to be a better than just not bad, I haven't seen enough evidence yet.  @dukesa1122 is quite right though, that people do change.  So I hope that SooHyun's father has changed as you say and he does help SooHyun get free of Taekyung Group.

Similarly for SooHyun's mother.  I want (though I don't think we'll get it) for her to redeem herself and come to see the value of the mother-daughter relationship in and of itself, rather than a means to an end.  I have a little hope because of that little flash of humanity that streaked across her face, in that most recent talk they had in SooHyun's office.  But even if we don't get any sort of redemption for her (because not everyone can be or wants to be saved), I'd still like to know more about the origin of her fervor for the Blue House.  Was she an "avenger/3 musketeer" too?  Or was she always a shark looking for the best way to get to the next level?

But you can sense that his daughter is more important to him.

I also believe that he regrets what he did to her.

My assumption is: he wanted himself to become a politician, because he thought, he was weak as anchorman and couldn't protect his friend, KSJ's brother. Remember that they used to be called the Three Musketeers... so they were fighting for citizen rights. When he won, his wife started to have that big dream: being First lady or the wife of a minister.

I'd like to respectfully disagree here, hope you don't mind.

Whether or not his reasons for entering politics were purely rooted in a desire to protect people like Kim SunJoo's oppa, because his wife had a goal, or some mixture of the two, or maybe even something else altogether-- the fact remains that he pursued a political career and then decided that the best way to stay in power was to join hands with TaeKyung Group.  In order to do so, he let his child go through with a marriage to the son of TaeKyung Group.  (Luckily WooSeok wasn't the same type of monster as his mother.)  But in no way, do I think that any of those actions suggest that his daughter is more important.

Do I agree that he regrets what he let happen to his child?  Oh yes.  But I view all of his current actions through the lens of what he allowed to happen to SooHyun in the past.  Which is to say: SooHyun's father may have had noble intentions, but his actions ended up being ultimately self-serving.

That's why I hope that her husband will threaten her with a divorce and even go through one. Honestly, she used her husband and daughter for her selfish desire and she did nothing herself. She used the others as pawn... while she stopped working.

I think her father will have to kiss his presidential candidacy goodbye if that happens.

Will he though?  I think that SooHyun's father and TaeKyung chairwoman are in a stalemate right now.  If he actually exerts himself on his daughter's behalf and makes sure that she isn't forced out of her Donghwa CEO position, then he may actually be able to become a presidential candidate.  Especially if he succeeds in making it so that her ex-MIL is no longer a threat.  Of course, this is assuming that he really is as pure as the driven snow, and the chairwoman really doesn't have any evidence of him doing dirty stunts.

I guess, in summary lol, I'm really quite irritated with both of SooHyun's parents and think that they have a lot to answer for.

I'll say that since he fabricated a lie to let CSH have her freedom because he has feelings for her, that means that he wants her to be happy and now, he has seen her happy and relaxed, so most likely he'll let her go, which means that he'll not do anything to harm KJH. This is supported by him warning the Director that it is not a manly thing to make CSH lose her hotel. Guys are usually not as vindictive...right? lol..

Up until episode 6, we've been painted this picture of WooSeok as a guy trying his best to navigate his crazy mother.  He threatens to cut ties with her if she lays one hand on SooHyun's hotel, he hires a hacker to bring down the hotel intranet, he goes behind his mother's back to make sure there are enough celebrities at the hotel opening to make sure it isn't an embarrassment.  I could go on and on-- the list is long because WooSeok really is being a nice guy.  But the thing that niggles at me is their little interaction when he invited her to dinner after the first ramen date article came out.

In my opinion, if WooSeok truly meant well, he never would have put a condition on his offer of help.  To me that means that now SooHyun has essentially told everyone that she's moved on from WooSeok, all bets are off.  He kept up his end of the bargain because he could convince himself that SooHyun wasn't really in a ~ssum~ relationship or any kind of relationship with JinHyuk.  Who's to say guys are usually not as vindictive?  Even if WooSeok never actively moves against SooHyun or JinHyuk, his inaction in itself has the potential to make their lives very difficult indeed.

@dukesa1122 265 USD is nuts, right?  I really would like to know what would be the other features of the bluray before I put down that kind of money lol.

  10. This is just from my attempt at translation, so please correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the people running the daum cafe have said that they need to get to 1,500 respondents before they can request the production of dvd or bluray.  Right now it looks like there's slightly less than 1000 people requesting the dvd and about 1,060 people who've requested bluray.  The bluray estimated price is ~300,000 KRW (~265 USD), which is ****ton of money so I hope I've just misunderstood something there.  But maybe vote for DVD instead??

For my fellow stupid americans, I've made a poll, which you can take here --> https://twitter.com/yonaomi123/status/1075078720854077445

Welcome to the thread! Not too early. In fact they tweeted this early this week.

Does anyone have any experience campaigning to get an english (or really any language) subtitled version of a kdrama?  I'm all for buying it regardless, but it would be so nice if we could have subtitles too?

Also my Korean is still very beginner... Can someone explain if daum literally just wants us to make a post in the cafe asking for the DVD/Bluray or is there a poll somewhere that we're supposed to take?

Edit~ I figured this out!  They really do just want you to post on the message board stating what quantity of Bluray or DVD you would order.

In order to be loved, you need to work for it. JWS and HI never confessed their love to the other and that's their own mistake. JH was just nice to her, he even said that she was a friend. So if she wanted something else, she should have been more proactive.

That's some powerful stuff!!  Can you please start writing kdrama scripts???

I'm going to piggyback on your comment... From all we've seen, JinHyuk is hyper-aware of the direction of people's thoughts.  He's well-spoken and observant, kind and clever.  In all the years that he's known HyeIn, in all the years that she's been jokingly, but not really jokingly, asking him to marry her (because it was obvious that that was an old line she was throwing at him), how could the man not know that his friend was in love with him?

A man like him, why wouldn't he have taken his friend aside one day and let her know that her feelings weren't returned, so that she could move on?  Perhaps that's unrealistic, but I think it would've been kinder.

Very very confident and very strong personality - and the types who does not shout.

Plus a big shoutout to the fact that he is manipulative and very observant but then again you wouldn't notice it if you are not a 3rd party observing him.

I just like the layers in this character. CSH for now is pretty straight - repressed cinderella and so are other characters. But, i think i like MIL, hubby, and JH.. and just maybe daddy. He can't be that innocent.

I really like your whole comment, but especially like that you've pointed out just how intelligent JinHyuk is.  He has very high emotional intelligence, which is rare in a male drama-land character, but serves his character well as a foil to SooHyun.  She, for all of her brilliance and strength, really suppresses that side of herself and just exists without allowing herself to feel the joys and pains of daily life.  And as we've seen, she has good reason to.  But through JinHyuk, I think SooHyun is finding that it's possible to do more than make it through each day.

I can't help but wonder, as SooHyun allows herself to truly live each day, if we'll see less of her playing the damsel in distress and instead using that brain of hers to run circles around her enemies.  That is one of the biggest wishes I have for this drama (and for all dramas of this type really-- let the good guys do smart, tricksy stuff too please, drama gods).  And on a somewhat related note, I'm hoping that the drama continues to acknowledge JinHyuk's stubborness and cleverness and lets him really become a true partner to SooHyun.  She deserves that I think-- a partner who can supplement her strengths and cover over her weaknesses.  As well, circling back a bit, I do rather wish that we could explore the somewhat gray side of JinHyuk too?  He's a good person, we've seen that proven, but even nice guys get angry right?

I'm intrigued to see that you like the MIL character.  I'm wondering if you or anyone else sees similarities between her character and the Godfather (I'm referring to the son Michael not Don Corleone)?  From the design of her private office, to the emphasis she places on loyalty to family, to her nasty, cold-blooded tactics, all of it screams to me: the Godfather.  I actually am really enjoying it and am wondering just how far is she going to take her mission to put SooHyun "back in her place".  Perhaps if/when MIL does take things a step too far, we will get to see SooHyun's dad act like a real dad and protect his daughter.  Because right now, I am not impressed.

Another role in misogyny are women who buy into it. I really hate that the ex-MIL has found that sleazy director to try and succeed CSH. The fact that he confronted her about the message board comments in front of all of the employees should be enough to show them that he isn't fit to lead.

Isn't the Executive Director an interesting choice?  I think that MIL is much too smart to put a patsy like him in place, especially since SooHyun's hotel chain is apparently a booming business.  He'd most likely wreck it, and MIL probably knows it.  I fully believe that she intends to bring SooHyun back, marry her to WooSeok, and then give SooHyun back Donghwa Hotel as a sop.  After all, MIL did tell her son that she plans to treat SooHyun nicely once they remarry.

Another moment from episode 5 that was telling was when the news show came on and they were discussing the ramen date and KJH was sitting with his family and his brother recognized the sweater because he was wearing it. KJH's mother made a comment about not liking powerful women and that a woman should just take care of her family. This is definitely a foreshadowing. I get the feeling that KJH's mother at some point imagined another life for herself. Also, at some point, I see her and CSH's mother having a conversation that will be very interesting.

Oooh.  That's a really good catch!   I like this interpretation and I really hope you're right.  SooHyun ought to know what a mother should be like.  She doesn't seem to have any older women who care for her... well except maybe for JinHyuk's tea/camera buddy, but that's just starting.

  14. So since I'm still a beginner Korean student can someone please tell me if my ears are right, and JinHyuk and SooHyun are already being less formal in their speech?  I can tell they're still being polite, but I just finished rewatching and I didn't hear nearly as many "cho"s as much as I heard "na" in episode 5.  It just kind of makes me even more excited to think that they're getting closer in these small, but significant ways.

Thanks chingus for all the recap and translation!

Omo...I hope this is not going to be a tragic love story...will one of them die or something? SH with her sleeping pills habit is really not good. She almost died 1x and she already had an accident 1x so I hope nothing worse will happen again...

I must admit that I'm one of those people who's typically skeptical regarding older woman with younger man romantic relationship due to the following reasons:

    1. sex needs - 75% of woman are lower in libido compared to man and the libido will continue to decrease with age. Hence, I'm always concerned that an older woman won't be able to meet the man's sexual needs

    2. security needs - woman needs emotional and financial security. In the case of younger man, they typically cannot provide financial stability. I think JH can meet SH's emotional needs so the outstanding question for me would be in term of financial stability. If SH lose all her wealth, would JH be able to support her financially? SH probably has some savings for them to live off but I'm still not sure about this financial stability....it seems that some time lapse is needed so that JH can be more financially stable....

The writer did plant that sort of scary foreshadowing seed with the sleeping pills didn't she!  But I'm hoping, since I'm trying to be positive about this show, that it'll end up being something positive like, SooHyun no longer needs to take the sleeping pills by the end of the drama or something like that.

Also (please don't be offended)...your first point about libido literally had me in tears of laughter. :joy: Even while I'm typing this, I'm still chuckling because it's such a no-nonsense way of looking at may/december romance stories.  I'd also like to point out that every human is different and who's to say which person in the relationship has a higher or lower sex drive...

I have been thinking abt this.. I m actually dreading over it!!.. Hope we get a happy ending for this unconventional love story.. I really don't want them to be separated.. Just keeping #FingersCrossed!!

I'm going to take the naive/head in the clouds perspective and say that by the end of the drama, SooHyun is going to ask JinHyuk to be her official boyfriend, rather than just someone she's dating and has ambiguous feelings for.

Also, who wants to bet with me that by the end of the drama, WooSeok (the ex) is going to finally confess to SooHyun and clear the air between them?  And that HyeIn will do the same with JinHyuk?  Because I think that they both will be learning alot about being courageous from SooHyun and JinHyuk throughout the drama...
