In fairness, HB was super busy and filmed this CF along with several others in the middle of his Bargaining shoot. He is such a perfectionist and  probably didn't have the necessary time to practice/prepare in order to do all the voice over work. Seems SYJ had more time to dedicate to this. 

 

This entire CF process was done virtually as well so it was probably a challenge for everyone involved, and it looks like everyone did the best they could given the situation.

Just wanted to share a few thoughts on shipping and what it means to ship two people because I think there is a lot of confusion around this concept lately.

Anyone who has read this thread regularly knows it is often mentioned that shipping is not for the faint of heart. You never know whether your ship will sail or sink no matter how sure you may feel.

Ultimately, everyone is free to ship whoever they want. Look around this forum, there are ships based on actors where one or both are in confirmed relationships with other people. There are ships where agencies and sometimes even the actors themselves have denied the ship is real. There are ships where months and even years go by with no updates or receipts of any kind. Yet these threads are active and people continue to ship! Are we all delusional? I dont think so. People ship for different reasons and as long as its done respectfully and people follow the rules it's all good and we shouldn't judge.

Some history for those who may think this ship was created because people cannot differentiate between real and reel, check the date on the first page - July 25, 2019. This was before we ever saw HB and SYJ at the CLOY script reading, before we ever saw a single still or promo for CLOY, and certainly before the show ever aired. Shipping for this couple started based on a little movie called The Negotiation where HB and SYJ played, not lovers, but a hostage taker and negotiator who did not even share a single frame together until the last 10 minutes of the movie and that involved not even a moment of romance or skinship. Instead, people started to take notice of their cute banter, chemistry, and closeness during the promotion period of the movie. Then came the biggest reason this ship was born - LA sighting + grocery photos. It was not based on them as a romantic pairing on screen, but just two people with a lot in common spending their personal time together on vacation.

Obviously the success of CLOY, their chemistry on and off camera made everyone take even more notice, especially on an international scale. Many started to revisit their previous work together and started connecting a lot of dots, reinforcing their feeling that there is something here despite the multiple denials as well as understanding why those denials may have been necessary in the first place.

While obviously we are all here because we believe and/or hope HB and SYJ are a couple, we know at the very least they are good friends who deeply admire and respect one another. We know this for a fact due to many reasons:

- they have told us they are close using their own words. Their agencies also confirmed they were close friends as part of the reason they were spending time together overseas.
-they have repeatedly stated how much they enjoyed working with each other and have learned from each other, so much so that they openly talked about wanting to work together again and then following through and actually making it happen soon after their first project.
-despite being caught up in romance rumours, they confirmed during CLOY presscon that it did not impact their decision to work together again at all, meaning whatever continued media attention they would continue to receive from their dating rumour was worth it if it meant they would have the opportunity to work together again.
-post CLOY, they made a point to accept the TikTok award together and present a united front to fans, effusively thanking them for their efforts (their speeches both during the award and backstage were well coordinated to ensure they were covering all bases). While the mood of the event was somber and they couldn't sit together, there were still numerous little smiles/glances/laughs caught on camera showing all was well in their relationship (whatever it may be), and they were seen walking together after the event was over.
-post CLOY, they seem to continue having no problem being associated with each other and accepted the same CF project when they know rumours persist.

All to say, they have a great relationship whatever the nature of that relationship may be. I can only speak for myself, but if for whatever reason they are not a couple, sure I would be disappointed, but I will still be happy with what they have given us both on and off screen, and knowing what a great team they are and how humble and classy they are as individuals. Ultimately, I ship HB and SYJ in whatever form their relationSHIP exists.

The mentioning of families being hurt by the news is definitely concerning and my interpretation is the same as yours @chorong-i  (families would not be bothered by such a rumour unless one or both parties is already in another relationship) so hopefully the statements put the rumours to rest and people move on, as clearly this is what HB wants 

 

I'm excited to see how SYJs CF links to HBs. There is definitely a shared storyline between the two CFs. Perhaps related to the candle scene?

I don't put much weight on the bodyguard(s) one way or another because often they are employed by a company. And they seem to be shared amongst a lot of Korean celebrities.

I recall reading those rumours as well. I don't know if they were the same ones. But one was as you described - someone or a group came across them taking a walk together in their neighbourhood. Not sure if they were spotted holding hands but they were alone. 

 

Which brings me back to the LA sightings. The initial sighting around Jan 10 had a few variations: they were seen together having a meal with SYJs parents (very unlikely her parents, probably just with another couple); seeing them with HBs old military friend (how the heck did this person know who his friend was?), and holding hands (they were travelling 'affectionately'). Of course no photos but these were credible since no one knew either were in LA at the time, much less together, and how specific the sightings were. And of course all of this was further legitimized once their grocery photos came out on the 20th aka busted! 

 

Without Soompi the last few days I had to resort to going on Twitter for any updates and it's not the same at all. I love the format here and the thorough discussions. You just cant do that on Twitter or IG.

Re: Baeksang. Well we know they were walking together when leaving their seats right after the ceremony. I don't know exactly when that actor spotted them but it's not surprising they stuck together as 'close friends' do .

Its definitely a different top/dress as the part that hangs on the shoulders is completely different.

Yup and the man didn't even flinch (nor did he flinch when she was tapping his chest during the hospital scene). When you watch their BTS and interviews especially comparing TN era to CLOY era you can really see how much closer they are and how the non verbal cues really come easily to them. I also love the elbow nudge SYJ gives to HB during that one interview (where he was extra cheeky) because he was looking at her and not the camera. He tries not to react and just turns his head back to the front. I don't get how two 'friends' could act like these two do.

Ha! That's kind of how I feel. I don't really have anyone in real life to talk about this with (not that I want to advertise my obsession either ). I found out a good friend also watched CLOY a few months back and I got so excited, telling her I had watched it too and binged the whole series in 3 days and she looked at me kinda funny. I had said too much 

 

My husband finds my new-found Korean drama fasincation to be amusing. But he has no idea how many times I've rewatched CLOY. Whenever I would rewatch it, he thought I was watching a new show. I guess Korean dramas all look the same to him so my secret is safe for now

Agreed. Responsible shipping should always include being respectful of all players involved and not attacking anyone's character. Shipping shouldn't be about proving someone right or wrong, it should be fun and supportive above all else.

Yes exactly, if they are together and SYJ was adamant that it be kept private, what does it matter what HB has done in the past? He would respect her wishes. And we are of course assuming HB has always been forthcoming about every relationship he has ever been in. So that means since Dec 2012 when he was discharged from military he has only had one relationship that lasted under a year. So that leaves 7 years of being single in the past decade? I very much doubt that. He does not disclose everything. Nor is he obligated to. 

 

My other favourite moment of that Swoon Compliment Me video is when HB reads one of the fake compliments and SYJ says, "Whoever wrote this is very expressive, the compliment is clear and concise, complete and well-written, I dont think Bin-sshi would write something like this" and HB is laughing as she says this. To me this suggests she knows his writing style and that ain't it

Thank you for this! We have wondered about the timeline for TN dvd commentary for so long. Since SYJ asked the director how he was as if it had been a while since they had seen each other (but did not ask HB), the assumption is she had seen HB more recently. Makes sense then that it was atleast October (after TN promo period) since we assume that is when they started spending more time together

Great post! Thanks for the reminders. To add to this, there was also that sighting of HB and SYJ with both their managers at the restaurant during or post-CLOY near TVN studios (we never got confirmation on the timeline right? It was the one posted on that YouTube food review channel where the owner mentioned which items they ordered). 

 

As much as it would be great to see their friends and other known associates post more information about them (only to satisfy our own curiosity) I actually think it's pretty great that their friends barely post anything about them on social media. Even SYJs Cinderella crew who are pretty active online rarely post about her anymore. There used to be a lot of pics of their outings but that has pretty much stopped in the last year or so. They really respect her privacy.
