don't know why I'm thinking the ending of this drama is the king and queen leaving the royal palace and lives like normal people. The queen open a restaurant somewhere and bring the korean dish to another level. Because historically the queen and king are died young right? Maybe they fake their death and live like ordinary people. And I think the cousin will helped them escape because he care with the queen so much.

ahhh same. it seems like both of them dislike the court/palace and prefer the freedom of the outside anyway. i hope they get the happy ending that they want.

some chi-eng trans. pardon my awkward phrasing my chinese is super rusty lel.

    Spoiler

    from 1.50

SB: why on earth would you go into the well in the middle of the night?

CJ: ah, it was too dark, i didn't see the well and fell in

SB: you have night blindness? falling into such a deep well (? not sure about the 2nd sentence)

    CJ: ah

MG (soyong's father): are you awake?

CJ: pls wait. pls wait a moment. yes, pls come in.

MG: if i knew you were coming, i would have made preparations for your sleeping place

(flashback of young soyong begging MG not to seal the well)

    MG: my apologies

    CJ: don't say that

CJ: i don't wish to trouble you any further, we will be going back to the palace today

MG: no trouble at all, pls don't say it that way. i'm here to convey grand queen dowager's message.

MG: seeing how anxious grand queen dowager is for you to return to the palace, you must be needed urgently

SB: since i've recovered now, i should go back as to the palace as well.

MG: no matter how busy you are, you don't have to worry about anything else. just focus on your responsibility as queen. although i'm lacking, don't forget that i'm always here for you.

    SB: yes

MG: have a safe journey, your majesty. although it's not appropriate for me to ask of this, but pls take care of the queen

CJ: i will take extra care to ensure that she won't be lonely

    MG: thank you

    CJ: let's go

SB, thinking: although he seems like a good father, at the end of the day he's still a greedy man who pushed his daughter into hell (like, put her in a dangerous situation because) he actually married his daughter off to a man he tried to kill in the past. is that why he (CJ) wanted to kill kim soyong?

SB: why do you look like you're worrying about court matters again?

    CJ: i'm not

SB: if it's not that, then did you leave something behind? eh, really?

CJ: it's not like that. it's a good thing that you are able to return to the palace, this is my expression of happiness.

    SB: then that's good.

SB, thinking: it's finally time to plot my revenge. but why do i feel like i missed out sth important?

SB: i keep having the feeling that there's sth impt...

    SB: ah! that important matter!

SB: i have sth impt to do, get out of my way. hong yeon, follow me

CJ: why are you running again?

    HY: my apologies

    CJ: walk slowly!

    YP: -face of disapproval- :joy:

SB: i heard that ladies of royal blood should walk like this, because i am the perfect queen.

    CJ: who? who said that?

SB: lady choi said it. is it not?

CJ: no i mean, who is this "perfect queen" you're referring to?

SB: it's as you see, it's me

CJ: oh, that's scary. can you revert to your original self?

SB: speaking of which, what style of women do you like? sexy? cute? innocent?

    CJ: what are you saying

SB: grand queen dowager is allowing me to select a few concubines. they are after all your concubines, i should take into consideration your preferences

    CJ: concubines? if it's concubines...

SB, thinking: look at this guy, he's about to show his true colours... (btw did yall notice the "look at this guy" is the same thing shs said in the tvn interview when asked to describe cheoljong with 4 words? i wonder if the scriptwriter wrote it in on purpose after the interview)

CJ: that's a great idea! i'm sorry, i was too excited

SB: about that, i should make it clear that although you're the king, the concubines are not your property, that's an outdated way of thinking, you don't own them.

CJ: oh, i like that way of thinking. what you mean is-

    SB: they're mine

    CJ: eh?

SB: they are mine. so don't even think about going near their living quarters. you already have the royal concubine.

CJ: ok, but i have a condition. give me a moment

    SB: why?

CJ: it's ok. i want to choose the family/clan

SB: what? no! their appearance is more important than their background! their appearance!

CJ: then you can let grand queen dowager know that it's not necessary to select any concubines.

SB: fine. but let's no(t) touch each other's territory - im in charge of the appearance, you're in charge of the family background.

CJ: you indeed are my anti fan. i was so worried, but now there's a way to solve it.

SB: don't smile. stop smiling, stop holding my hand, stop sleeping next to me!

    -lady choi frets-

CJ: do i stop doing everything?

SB: yes, you should stop doing everything. just! stop! argh, i spent too much time here. let's go!

HJ's lady in waiting: Lady HJ has a letter for you

CJ: in my time of absence, you must all have been busy. thanks to all of you, i have nothing to do.

    court: my apologies, your majesty.

CJ: to show my gratitude, i plan to organise a luncheon/celebratory lunch.

court official: the people are suffering. if you organise a luncheon to reward us, the people will think that we don't care about them. it is better not to have one. this is not something a king should do.

CJ: but (someone, i'm guessing a previous king? or the grand queen dowager?) also organised a luncheon to celebrate a few months after their recovery from an illness. the queen also fell ill due to being too tired and just recovered, isn't that a cause for celebration?

JG: the reason behind the queen's illness is still under investigation, it is still unconfirmed.

CJ: she has been well the past 2 days, it must have just been because of fatigue/insufficient rest.

    JG: but-

Jo court official (idk his name sorry haha): the queen managed to pull through such a difficult time, it deserves a small celebration at least.

CJ: yes, that's my responsibility as a husband and a king.

(another kim?) court official: your majesty, you can't do that. regarding the queen's condition, it was such a dangerous situation. if we don't do a thorough investigation and just sweep it under the rug-

CJ: did you not see that the queen has fully recovered? could it be, you're hoping that the queen was indeed harmed by someone?

court official: no, of course not...

CJ: or, rather than being worried about the queen's safety, you're more concerned with using this incident to achieve your political goals?!

JG: pls calm down your majesty. if that is your intention, we should be grateful.

CJ: then everyone, pls look forward to it (the luncheon).

GQD: looks like you had a good rest, are you harbouring desires now?

at the start, seems like the queen dowager is trying to get the king to work with her (to fulfill the previous king's goal?). CJ isn't sure whether to accept/tries to politely decline, tells her that he'll think about her offer.

CJ and HJ's convo continues in the next vid

CJ: i'm sorry i made you wait

HJ: pls leave us for a while. i thought you weren't coming, so i came back first.

CJ: i was held up by other matters.

HJ: you must have been busy, you didn't even have time to read a letter.

CJ: actually, the queen dowager came to look for me and we spoke for a while

HJ: what did you speak about?

    CJ: just this and that

HJ: your majesty, you seem to be hiding more and more secrets from me. then what did you talk about with the queen, at the lake?

    CJ: ah, you saw that

HJ: is it something i shouldn't have seen?

CJ: no it's not, we were talking about selecting concubines

HJ: selecting concubines... you can't be happy about it?

CJ: it's an opportunity to distract the kim clan. if there is another clan to fight with them, their threat to the throne will diminish.

    HJ: so? you allowed it?

    CJ: yes

HJ: this is (the video got cut. but she was trying to say that it's the queen's scheme)

    CJ: bin (meaning concubine)

HJ: why are you calling me that? why are you no longer calling me by my name? you used to say that the person who made you happy and sad was me, wasn't it? has that changed?

    CJ: HJ ah-

HJ: pls answer me, (i want to know) where your heart is. your majesty, have you fallen for the queen?

    !!!!!! ok so CJ's reply was in this video. he says he can't fall for the queen. HJ says so it's not because he will not fall for her, but it's that he cannot  ;;;;;A;;;;;

I'm still torn between wanting the real so yong to come back n bong hwan return back to modern world and that interview was the last scene..i could see the ending taking that route... Just like oh my ghost...

But i'm more towards the want he like would be bong hwan...all those things that capture his interest is bong hwan .... Just like whrn i watch oh my ghost, im dissapointed. When the chef end up with the real girl... It should be the ghost...sigh..

i totally get what you mean, i'd hate for it to go the oh my ghostess route too. but tbh currently i don't see it going that way? i think it's quite understandable if the extra scenes will be of soyong and the king because we don't really get to see soyong in the series at all, since it's mainly told from bong hwan/so bong's perspective. so i don't see it as a hint that that theory is the end game. fingers crossed it won't be anyway, or at least make the transition between personalities less abrupt than in oh my ghostess so that the audience can be convinced of the relationship. the drama has been pretty unpredictable so far anyway, let's just have faith in the writers for now and enjoy kjh and shs's chemistry haha xD

But im frustrated he did not recall the kiss the next day, all that was in his head is byung in and his plan...

i'm guessing more like it's something he isn't too proud of? since he kissed her when she was drunk (and he was even more convinced about her drunkenness at her outburst after the kiss, he commented that she was so drunk that she couldn't differentiate between reality and delusion). (edit: they may have spoke about it when they woke up tho i realised. but im not sure, when the subs come out haha)

but anyway, nobody asked for my personal viewpoint but i'll share it anyway haha: i see bong hwan and soyong becoming 1 person (riding on the reincarnation theory mentioned?), and i don't see bong hwan being more important than soyong in the relationship either. i see them being equally important - while yes bong hwan's personality was the one that cleared up the misunderstandings between the queen and king, and cheoljong only started opening up to  the queen when the queen was sobong, bong hwan did not start to even empathise with the king before soyong's feelings and memories stepped in. he was more preoccupied with staying alive, chilling out, and siding with power before that. sobong would not have returned the king's feelings or even bothered empathising with the king if soyong was not part of the equation. i see bong hwan/sobong as the one who opened the door to cheoljong's heart, but it's the combination of soyong's deep love for cheoljong and bong hwan's personality as the one that will make cheoljong fall in love with the queen even more.

and although i think the k-drama childhood trope thing is far overused, since it's part of the story, it's also worth mentioning that soyong's actions was what made cheoljong fall so hard for hwajin in the first place.

One of the adorable king in Korean historical dramas!

He make a "Queen dictionary" for the new words that he heard from her aww:bawling:

    HE REMEMBERED EVERYTHING I'M CRYING.

also "ment = i picked it up on the way here" :joy: the miscommunications are hilarious

btw can i just say, i'm really glad that we were all worried for nothing about the possible dubious consent route after ep 8. when cheoljong was getting ready for her to slap him for kissing her when she's tipsy, gotta admit that was really sweet.

So Bong already knows this but she won’t tell him.

(i'm just gonna assume bong hwan and soyong are basically functioning as a unit now because i just find it easier to think that way lel, that said,) it could be because of soyong's will to not tell cheoljong? i kinda think that was her will anyway since she never revealed it even though she could very well have before. could have been her way of protecting cheoljong.

I think Bong Hwan is slowlly leaving  from So Yong, or So Yong is finally overtaking her body.

The times where her expression changed when watching "her"King or at the last scene when tried to save him. That is why i think that the queen is returning. Her spirit is becoming stronger with the help of Bong Hwan. He is making her stronger.

perhaps it's because im really fond of soyong, but i really like this theory. in essence i like the idea that soyong is still around and bonghwan is learning from her ability to empathise and care for the people around her and soyong is learning from bong hwan's confidence to stand up for himself. they are two opposite ends of the spectrum, and it'll be nice to see how meet in the middle. kind of rides on what raffles noted about so bong's character development:

    1 hour ago, Raffles said:

Shin Hye Sun (and Choi Jin Hyuk in the Act 1 voice overs) do a fantastic job winning us over to their character. But as charismatic and amusing as Sobong is, she is not a loyal or reliable person. Her growth will mean learning some lessons about loving and giving. Looks like she’s started that journey.

i'm also pretty fond of the reincarnation theory aisling mentioned, and i think the writers will do a good job in reconciling the two very different facets of the same soul as they've been doing so far. that said, i dont see these two theories mutually exclusive either.

    15 hours ago, aisling said:

I’m actually very fond of “true love transcends time” trope. That’s why I would find it extremely romantic if BH and SY were revealed as the same soul.

Btw I think she was in a romantic mood anyway; considering the fact that she assumed two men fighting to dancing tango.

HAHAHA the tango part seriously caught me off guard :joy: it was so intense until they said that.

i'm not sure if this has been shared before - this twitter user subbed 3 clips (in the same thread as the linked tweet) from the press con

after watched the preview, i think one of the reason why soyoung wanted to kill herself is her past (DUH OBVIOUSLY). the child in the preview, which is little soyoung said that she is the reason why his family are killed because she cant keep his secret. maybe it is the reason why she doesn't want to tell cheoljong that she is the real soyoung, the one who saved him from the wall. we saw when cheoljong enacted her as queen, and her gaze toward chelojong is like someone who just falling in love. maybe she didn't know cheoljong is the boy she saved when they were kid and she just falling in love with the king, and when she knows the truth she feels responsible for the death of the family of the man she loved

I'm guessing also that she wasn't aware that her family was involved in so much corrupt and evil acts and she was basically just a pawn in their game? it seems like she's a lot more morally just as compared to the rest of her family (including her cousin like idk why ppl think he's super nice i mean yea he's nice to soyong but he also plays an active role in keeping their clan in power - he's been doing that since he first appeared lel) and i think that guilt may have pushed her over the edge as well. i keep thinking why she didn't expose hwajin, i think it may be because she doesn't want to take another person away from the king? im not sure. anyway SOYONGGGGG im crying my heart out for ya girl ;A; (PS annaR your english is great!)

  6. i just finished ep 8, and WHEW what a rollercoaster... the interludes of soyong's affection for the king made me cry (ESP THAT FLASHBACK OF THEIR FIRST MEETING AT THE PALACE - SO SOFT ;;;;A;;;;) then sobong returning to beat soyong up made me cry for a different reason LEL

anyway i was wondering if anyone knows what sobong was looking for on the mattress when they woke up after drinking? like right before the king and the spy eunuch starting fighting outside their room?

@icemaid thanks for sharing her pics! omg so cute her doggo is wearing a hat with candles :joy: happy birthday our dear seol in ah

  7. @aisling !!! this accursed gif /quickly saves it/ :takemymoney: seriously im finding it hard to watch the preview because my heart keeps skipping at this 0.5s scene and now im just gonna stare at it forever HAHA seriously tho kim jung hyun is collecting all our souls with his scenes and he knows what he's doing. i don't crush on actors very often and being able to attract people's attention when shin hye sun is on screen (imo, i think she's super charismatic when she's acting) is really something else.

im amazed at the casting for this show tbh. everyone fits their role so well. honorable mention for court lady choi (no explanation needed) and seol in ah because i only knew her from running man before this and i only remember her as being adorable, goofy, and the girl who always does the freeze HAHA

The late king, Cheoljong's father was Queen Dowager's (the one who is into shamanism) husband or son? Because I am a little bit confused here.

the previous king was the queen dowager's husband.

i dont think the previous king was cheoljong's father though. if i didn't understand it wrongly, the previous king died without an heir. cheoljong's family was initially on exile and he was put in this position by the andong kim clan.

I’m curious, seems like a lot of people hate the concubine. Can someone explain why they hate her? Or do we have someone who likes her here ? I don’t like her but she hasn’t pissed me enough to hate her . I think she’s just losing sense of herself to jealousy and insecurity and abandoning best parts of herself by greed. I don’t think she’s completely despicable, but she went with the lie because she was young and it was advantageous. She became excellent because she was the King’s love and got lost in her love for him that she forgot about what she lied and developed confidence. She was okay in the beginning, her love for her maid was genuine but she is weak , in terms of plotting and surviving  the palace. She thinks she’s smart but all that plotting will only benefit her for the short term . Honestly, if she got along with the Queen, she wouldn’t have so much problems. The Queen wanted to go with her and she has helped her and was nice to her.

First drama where both second leads aren’t likeable.I feel like the secondly love triangle is too unrelated sometimes

i don't exactly hate her either tbh. i find her super suspicious and kinda selfish but at the same time i think it's kinda sad. she obviously does love cheoljong a lot and is willing to die for him, but her love is selfish and possessive. but anyway the hate she gets is probably because she's going directly against the female lead (a super likeable character) and has been pretty suspicious since day 1 which makes it even harder to trust her and this overshadows any semblance of merit lel. it's bad when she's being kind but you can't help but think if she has an ulterior motive for doing anything.

side note, i live for that love triangle. it's amazing. spectacular. HAHA

The preview makes it seem like they had their first night, but Cheoljong is probably lying. Rather, it looks like he was searching the room for that secret book the whole night. He was pretty sober, so I’m sure he wouldn’t have taken advantage of Sobong while she was drunk.

    good point!

    Spoiler

i feel like the way he said it was in his /fake cheoljong/ voice and idk i just find it kinda fishy. i didn't think of it being a cover but your theory sounds really plausible. @Dramanoona also talked about the issue of consent, it really wont be cool if the king went ahead and did the do when sobong wasn't ready, much less drunk...

there's also the possibility of soyong lurking around i guess, the whole mechanism of this soul exchange is confusing and mysterious lel. hopefully we'll learn more about it next week.

currently still trying to calm down from that surprise kiss, dang...

Interesting theory but I sort of dont want bong hwan to ever return to his body I hope it goes the Chinese route but what you said seems like a likely route.

i dont really mind any ending at this point (im just concerned about the execution) and i personally dont think that that theory i proposed is indicative of any specific ending. a few people pointed out that it may go the oh my ghostess route, which im personally also not a fan of either.

i know everyone finds the cousin annoying but damn that face off between the king and the cousin - both actors were stellar in it. the tears in his eyes when the king said that soyong is no longer someone he can desire, a really nice touch

  13. hi yall, just wanted to share sth interesting i noticed rewatching ep 5 (yes i'm already rewatching eps because i'm pathetic for mr queen ok).

so before so bong headed to the lake in attempt to return to his body, bong hwan was narrating about the archilles heel story. he says something along the lines of "we might not need each other if we did not have weaknesses. we are each other's weaknesses, dragging each other into misery". then soyong takes over the narration, saying "but we also make up for each other's weakness, and save each other".

my interpretation of this is that it's a hint at a potential collab between soyong and bong hwan to help each other get out of each other's sticky situations which they are facing in both their lives? idk if this would mean like maybe 1 ep or even just a few scenes of soyong's wit being a saving grace for bong hwan (although he's currently paralysed atm there isn't many leads as to how his story is going to work out), and i'm hoping soyong and bong hwan will somehow tap into each other's strengths and help the king and themselves gain their power back:)

anyway just wanted to share it cos i thought it was an interesting scene! may just be overthinking but didn't notice the possible implications of it before xD
