@Ameera Ali right it would be a waste not to show his impressive muscles. As per SeRi said "Whats the use of this? If you cant carry my small head?(Referring to Captain Ri shoulders) you should just loose your muscles here:tounge_wink: and from what SeRi said i deduced that she already coped a feel of his muscles when she crashed landed on him.

Here's a refresher of his impressive muscles

OMGGG! What did I just see??? And when did all those muscles happen??? It's a movie?

I just saw this pic. Are they shooting in civilian clothes? Or maybe are they the actors in their own clothes?

Is that the wiretapper Man-bok with the 4 ducklings?

    Have they defected?

Or they could still be in "Pyongyang" though, given the drab colors in the background.

Mass village defection is not how I want this to end. Just RJH.

I have a question..  if the two main characters met in Switzerland, how come they aren't recognizing each other??

Se Ri had a lot on her mind back then. While she was on the verge of ending her life, remembering a stranger was the least of her interest. We're not sure about RJH though. I think he remembers her now. When he took out his camera it's a likely Jeong Hyuk behavior to look at the photos saved in it, and he saw that Se Ri was there. Not so much to unwittingly discover for himself that he had met her before but to confirm that it was indeed Se Ri whom he saw in Switzerland. My hunch is that he took a photo of her then. He was instantly smitten with her that even after that brief encounter her memory remained in his mind for a while, perhaps fading with the passage of time. But when Se Ri appears in his life again, with the photo and his keen sense of hearing, he must have already put two and two together by now.

    ======

On a related note, there's something about Switzerland that RJH avoids talking about with Se Ri. Either he's still carrying the guilt of his brother's death or he doesn't want Se Ri to realize that he saw her during the worst time of her life. Or both.

RJH is taking the guilt of his brother's death upon himself since he was begging his brother to go to the military instead of him since he's a piano major. When Se Ri asked what he majored in in Switzerland, RJH ignored the question, perhaps frightened to utter the word 'piano'. When he talked to the tomato, he was also hesitating to say the word 'piano' even if he knew it was something that made him feel good.

WAHAHAHA!!! our dear fellow comrade @campanulah, u must have been a member of section 11..!!! is your identity, a spy??  u caught such tiny details from the 2019 dated form and wrong school to now, the application photo :joy:

double WAHAHAHAHA!!! :mrgreen: you see, SR was all shaky and wobbly staring down the bridge and suddenly asked to take photo.. she needed the time to calm her nerves, else the photo will turn out blurred and not clear enough for RJH to crop out SD to paste on his application form :glasses:

@campanula omg u had me ROFLMAO!!! :joy: with this drama being the hype right now, are we getting more pianists applying into those 2 schools?? :tounge_wink: like you know, we comrades could paraglide there and hopefully ambush some RJH lookalikes..

I really didn't want to nitpick on this but you asked. And it's a question that needed answer and this could be the only answer to it.  :tounge_wink:  At least the photo that Se Ri took of him served a purpose. RJH used it for his school application. :joy:

Oh, and since they're making us wait 2 WEEKS for the next episode, I'm going to be on a nitpicking spree.  The scene where RJH asked Se Ri to take a picture of him and SD, by the shots shown on the episode, it would have taken them at least 2 hrs by train to finally be able to take that picture. The scene showed that they were on the hanging bridge in Sigriswil when RJH approached Se Ri, but Se Ri took RJH and SD's picture somewhere in the Jungfrau, not far from where episode 2 epilogue was filmed in Kleine Scheidegg where RJH and SR were gawking in awe at the paragliders.

Ok, to be fair to the location director :D, it was raining in Sigriswil and they could not take decent shots of RJH and SD under the rain. And it was really important that they took a clear shot of RJH with sunny background and all bec he would need the photo for his application form as requested by the props director. :D

    Peace, Mr. Location Director. :joy:

Thank you for your sharp eyes! Siiighhh...I really don’t appreciate SK’s way of live shooting a drama. Praying that everything will go smoothly and cast and production team will stay healthy.

It's unfortunate that this inevitably happens in an uncontrolled environment since they're shooting outdoors. I can't imagine how cold it must be for the 4 ducklings frolicking in the river when they were catching fish for Se Ri. Round the clock shooting also took its toll on the lead actors. Fatigue was apparent on the face of RJH and YSR on scenes they shot during the wee hours of the night, such as the jangmadang scene when SR got lost and Pyongyang street scene when RJH was following SR. How much more to the gaffers, grips, camera operators, boom operators, set and costume designers, props people, etc... But, yes, production management could have done better in managing their schedules.

comrades, time to get our brain cells working on something while waiting!! haha

RJH’s bro died 7yrs ago.. RJH’s application to the academic year was 2007-2008..

but it seems like, he didn’t complete the enrolment?  and if the engagement was before RJH’s bro passed away.. why wasn’t the marriage on the older bro first? i thought being a conservative country the eldest son has to be married first before the next sibling in line..

Unfortunately, yes, because the props director, I mean RJH did not submit his application in 2007. In fact, he did not submit it until 2019. Plus, he used Geneva's music academy's 2019 application form instead of Basel's where he supposedly went to. :D

While waiting for latest episode,im watching Shark...

I think i am the only one that want Son Ye Jin to end up with Ha Seok Jin instead of Kim Nam Gil in this drama...

Thought i get to see SYJ meet HJS again in this drama.

Hope u guys don't mind i post this clip of HSJ & SYJ....

So "brother-in-law" is Son Ye Jin's recruit to do a cameo? I haven't seen this drama, but it's nice to know that friends of CLOY actors are supportive of the show. Hyun Bin already has a friend Park Sung-woong appear as well. And the actor who played Se Ri's ex-boyfriend is I think the director's recruit. I hope there'll be more cameos.

Hi there, I can't help myself anymore. I need to post something because liking CLOY is already giving me headache haha.

After the candle scene when she thought she was really special, he flat out told Seri that he has A WOMAN--- that's gotta hurt.

When Seri asked him to take a picture with him--- outright rejection. Ouch.

When Seri asked for a hug instead of a handshake--- outright rejection. Damn it.

These actions hurt Seri more than a slap in the face or a punch in the gut, but she took it like a woman. Jung Hyuk, you idiot.

RJH may not be aware of it but he's already being unfair to Seri. He knows he has a fiance but he still keeps on doing things that would make any woman fall head over heels in love with a man. He can't argue that it is only natural to him because he doesn't even do those things to his own fiance. Seri has grown so fond of him, his actions are already borderline brutal.

Yes, he can't help it. That's what makes it self-serving and vicious. Jyung Hyuk, you selfish prick.

    Yes!!! Go!!! Say it!!!

it seems nobody here wants to share where to watch the CLOY special :( hmm it's 'PIMIL' (secret in Korean language) hehehe that's OK i'll just wait for nxt episode!! i'm busy watching 99.9 Billion Woman anyway!

From what I understand last night's "special" was a replay of episode 2. So it's nothing new. I hope tonight's special will already have some value added to it.

Btw, I'm curious. Has there been a case before that a Korean TV show failed to deliver an episode bec they, uhhh... didn't finish the episode?

Anyone notice in ep 5, whilst attempting to lighten the situation and lessen the hate the NK ahjumas had for Jung Hyuk after discovering that he had two fiancée, Se Ri compared her "love story" with Jung Hyuk to that of Romeo and Juliet. Seo Dan and Jung Hyuk's engagement was acknowledged and arranged by both parents, whereas hers and JH's was a forbidden love. Interesting how she nonchalantly spelt out what was going to be exactly their fate in coming days!

On another note, I watched confidential assignment tonight because that was Hyun Bin's most recent role as a north korean. Too much angst and sadness, please, let this north korean soldier have a happy ending this time. Grant him his true love already!

Hyun Bin was channeling his inner Im Cheol-ryung during RJH's fight scene with the village gangster. Although instead of the wet tissue roll, he used his belt to smack the baddies one by one.

Both of you are correct, and yes, one of the greatest difficulties of translating Japanese/Korean is that they are 'subject-less' languages, and the listener must make inferences/understand the context to understand the speaker's intention.

Similarly, by dropping the subject, the speaker is able to hedge, i.e. with a degree of ambiguity to his actual intention.

    My translation:

Jeong Hyuk: "Why are you having a headache? You're going back soon, it should be making you happy." (좋아지는 마음 대신)

Seri's reply can be read two ways:

    1) "I'm happy...I'm happy that's why I have a headache" (assuming she is replying directly to his conversation, but this reply doesn't make sense)

    2) "I like X ... I like X that's why I have a headache." (좋아서...좋아서 생각이 많아)...but what is X? X is deliberately vague, but "I like that I'm going back that's why I'm having a headache"? Does that even make sense?

Quite obviously, and that's why Jeong Hyuk pauses, caught by the meaning of WHAT SHE IS NOT SAYING, which is:

I like you, that's why it's giving me a headache.

P.S. I also read Suki Kim's book....wrote something on my blog some time back:

    https://jenweiting.com/2019/07/17/without-you-there-is-no-us-book-review/

Feeling rather fed-up about the disappointing special! I'm just going to try and forget about this drama for a while since it's pretty clear they're quite behind on shooting...!

Thank you for the explanation! :)

Thanks also for sharing your blog post. It's an insightful read.

Takeaway from the book for CLOY as it applies to YSR - RJH communication process: Indeed, in a society like NK where people find expressing themselves in a straightforward manner a challenge, they become an expert at interpreting veiled remarks as well as silence. The silence at the end of the video says it all: they both know that they like each other.

I'm not fluent in Korean but as far as I know, what SR said was "I like..". It's common in Mandarin, and I believe in Korean as well, to say this without a subject. So what she meant could be "I like the fact that I'm able to leave soon" in response to JH's question, but further on she says "I like.. so it's giving me a headache." Therefore, it could also be a confession because why would being able to leave (something she has been hoping desperately for) NK be something that gives her a headache? So I also took it to mean that she actually meant that she likes (him) and that it's troubling her because she is leaving soon.

I don't know if I'm making sense. Any Korean speakers here can help?

I think Se Ri meant "liking" per se, not necessarily in the context of leaving NK. Specifically she meant liking RJH and how it's giving her a headache bec although she likes the idea that she's returning to SK soon she also likes liking RJH, and staying longer with him around would also be nice. So she likes the fact that she's leaving NK but she somewhat likes to stay bec she's already beginning to like RJH. The act of "liking" is what is giving her a headache.

    =====

On another note, I think RJH lied about not knowing what first snow meant bec at the end of episode 3 it's one of the nice things that he was telling the tomato plant. So he knew the romantic meaning of first snow and that it's supposed to bring joy to couples who witness the event together. There's a book [Without you there's no us, Suki Kim (2014)] I read few years ago about a Korean-American teacher who went undercover to teach English to sons of North Korea's elite. She wrote about how her students lied all the time. Not so much lying in bad faith but more of lying to survive, to defend themselves, when they don't know how to express themselves, or bec it is what their government told them to do. They lied to the point that they might not know if lying was a bad thing because it's second nature to them, or because they might not even know what is the truth. The school that she taught in is I imagine the kind of university the likes of RJH and other children of NK's priviledged families might have gone to.

Anyway, in this scene, RJH might have lied about the first snow bec he did not want to think about the possibility of a romantic relationship with Se Ri given their circumstances. In fact, at the photo studio earlier he immediately dismissed Se Ri's suggestion to have a photo of them taken saying there's nothing to remember about them. Every time Se Ri was leaving he would tell her to forget about him and that everything that happened to her in NK was just a nightmare. Lying about not knowing about the first snow was RJH saving himself from the heartache when he and Se Ri would eventually go their separate ways.

There's also a scene where Se Ri was grilling RJH about how many times he told her lies. I forget which episode it happens, I'll look for it later. I just think that every line on this drama was there for a reason.

i found the secret to RJH’s soft hair.. and its not THAT bar of soap..

This is a missed opportunity for Dr. For Hair to do a product placement right when RJH with his luscious hair, on his motorbike, cruises by Se Ri. Mediheal and Manyo (and Seri's Choice) have already done theirs in the early episodes. Say, a canister of Dr. For Hair shampoo drops from RJH's duffel bag (bec obvs he uses it and brings it with him wherever he goes) then it rolls on to the pavement, is shot by RJH's gun, and supposedly whatever that substance that makes RJH's hair gorgeous combusts and blows the motorbike and the truck of doom away.
