Today is such a enjoyable day for me. CLOY got high ratings, Parasite got Best Picture and BINJIN got FIRE

Or he's done it already and the script's instructions were different from what he had mastered, so he got confused.

I love you VAST. We're friends. Peace.

    Oh... nice writer-nim! :D

She seems to put attention to little details... that’s why I trust this writer with CLOY ending. I don’t think that she will let us down with the ending.

April 16 also marks the Sewol tragedy in 2014 that gripped the entire nation of Korea. A ferry carrying mostly students took a wrong turn and sank en route to Jeju from Incheon. 305 died in the disaster.

Coincidentally, a documentary In The Absence is nominated for an Oscar today for Best documentary. Hope it wins.  I won't find it unexpected if this was the show paying homage to the tragic event (or the documentary).

  3. For today's episode, I hope they will finally resolve this issue with Seri and her stepmom so we can move on to the meat of the matter -- the much awaited kiss. :D

Also, the NIS investigation. What is that about? Who's being investigated? Is it Se Ri or her father? If Se Ri, is she suspected to be a spy or  harboring a spy inside SK? Technically, RJH having entered SK "illegally", withough going through proper immigration procedures, is considered a spy. Are they investigating Seri and RJH's crossing of the MDL or armistice line?

Plus, CCK. As irritating his presence can be, and as much as we would like to believe he's dead, the motivation for his hatred towards the Ri family is not yet explained. So he has to be still be around to have this issue resolved too. I think his beef with them is more than the typical poor hating the rich, I think it's personal.

    Quote

What I really want to get resolved soon, as in right away on the first scene after the opening credits of episode 13, is the nagging mystery behind the relationship between Se Ri and her stepmom. We already know that Se Ri was abandoned by her stepmom in the beach. From this we can surmise that this caused Se Ri to develop her fear of intimacy that makes her tend to withdraw in her own relationships when things begin to get emotionally deeper. I feel that before this issue gets resolved, the director won't show us kissing/intimacy scenes between Se Ri and RJH bec he knows that people over at Soompi will grumble over the lack of resolution of this issue. LOL

Seriously, I think this is the side of the relationship equation that is holding Se Ri back from getting intimate with RJH. Avoiding making special memories in SK that will only remind her of RJH when he's gone is just a manifestation of it.  His part of the relationship is pretty much ironed out. The poor North Korean guy already confessed that he wants to marry and have a future with her. He has also demonstrated countless times that his heart is pure and that he is always there for her. Heck, he even crossed the line that could have put the two Koreas at risk of reigniting a war (yeah, more than this show as the conservative party would want everyone to believe). :D If that's not love, I don't know what is. And that face?!? How can one even say no to a national treasure?! Must RJH take another bullet to prove his undying love towards Se Ri?

I think that once Se Ri finds out that her stepmom did not intentionally abandon and make her feel unwanted and worthless growing up, she would begin to shed off that insecurity and allow herself to be vulnerable with RJH and be loved by him in every possible way - including in the bedroom. So, director-nim, please get this part of the story over and done with so the show can progress to what everyone has been waiting for. :D

Thanks - didn't know that!!   Do you know about the practical realities of someone like RJH deciding to live in Switzerland?  Is it a situation where he would have to split his time between the two places?

Sorry for the late reply since I am traveling. Some incoherent streams of consciousness on the topic bec I'm mobile: :D

On Switzerland, is it plausible for a North Korean like RJH to live there and have a "happy ending" surrounded by cows and chocolates? The answer is yes.

But the issue here is not about  Switzerland or where he is allowed to travel and meet Se Ri. RJH can always go to countries where NK has diplomatic relations with such as China, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, USA, Canada, and many others (except SK and France (?)). Switzerland is not the only country that can provide such a possibility.  The real issue is his citizenship, if RJH:

    1. remains a North Korean

    2. acquires a South Korean citizenship (defection)

    3. acquires another citizenship ex American, Canadian, etc. (defection)

    1. The problem with remaining a NK citizen is that he is not free to travel. He will have to seek govermment permission every time he goes outside NK. Let's say RJH remains in good graces with the NK government by the end of episode 15, and pursues a career as a pianist and travels to Switzerland to perform in concerts. This is favorable to the NK government as his professional fee is a source of hard currency, so they will gladly allow him to go to Switzerland. However, once there he will always have minders following him around to make sure he's not being indoctrinated against NK ideologies and to make sure he's not fraternizing with citizens of the enemy South Korea . So that means his minders will prevent romantic reunions with Se Ri. And they will be extra tough on RJH since he has a history of "harboring a South Korean spy"  as CCK has accused him. The same MO that we saw in the Pyongyang scenes applies where his house will be bugged and every move will be reported back to NK. Come on, as of episode 12, we have been clamoring for a Seri and RJH private time while they are free to do so in SK. For sure, if he remains a NK citizen in Switzerland, a date with a South Korean will be almost impossible, if not dangerous. That means they're not getting any in Switzerland. Do we want that? I thought we want to see them have twins? :D

Important thing, this arrangement also means that RJH will turn a blind eye to NK's illegal activities and be complicit to the corruption and abuses that he and his brother are fighting against. So is that how we want our upright and principled Captain Ri go down in history?

    2. If the writer makes RJH defect to SK, then it's easier to meet Se Ri. If I go by my speculation that RJH will run after corrupt NK officials, he will be a good candidate for political persecution (execution, hard labor, family purge) that will force him to leave NK.

But what about his family - Papa Ri and Mama Ri? We don't know much about Papa Ri, but before the reunion scene at his house, I had placed him as one of the bad guys bec who else would be complicit to human rights abuses and corruption in NK than the head of the Politburo himself? But he seems to have raised fine sons, so let's just say he's a good guy. LOL Is that possible? Yes, sort of. If he supports RJH is his quest for justice, Papa Ri will be also likely to be purged - reasonable for seeking asylum elsewhere.

In reality, there were instances where Kim/Jong/Un had top-ranked officials, once thought to be his trusted advisors, executed or sent to prison camps bec of "differences in running NK". One was even fed to a tank of Brazilian piranhas. I don't know Papa Ri is going to defect, but it could happen in one of those diplomatic events like the inter-Korean meetings, where he goes missing and the next thing we know he's with the NIS ready to defect. There are several instances of high-ranking officials that have defected to SK. In fact, before the 1990's famine, most defections were done by them since they had the means or were posted in countries that made defection possible. A recent high profile defection was by NK's ambassador to Denmark and UK who defected to the British MI5/MI6 (maybe to James Bond), which caught NK and the world off guard.

    https://www.nationalreview.com/2019/07/thae-yong-ho-north-korean-diplomat-defector/

    3. Same as above but instead of defecting to SK, RJH can defect to a third country. There's an episode on The West Wing about a North Korean pianist (surprise surprise!) who was invited to play at the White House and he attempted to defect to the US by slipping a note to President Bartlett. It could be like that - he could defect to Donald... no, Justin Trudeau while on invitation to play piano abroad. LOL

So by having a passport that is a lot freer than NK's, a happy ending with Se Ri is more likely everywhere, including Switzerland, if you really want them  to be in Switzerland. Besides, I don't mind occasionally bumping into RJH in the train station or having to ask him to reach for my favorite kartoffelbrot which they always stack on top shelves at the Migros grocery. :D

**Although I am guessing they will just reopen the Kaesong Industrial Complex and Se Ri will open Se Ri Choice's manufacturing facility there, where NK ahjummas can work and see Se Ri when she goes for a plant visit. Happy ending for everyone!

Could it be that he joined the military because it is mandatory?  Isn't Eun Dong there for 9 years because he has to?  I guess RJH was still a student when he was in Switzerland, and his brother's death coincided with the time when he would have to join.

@Jloves thanks for posting the picture of your fave scene - the side by side contrast between SR's conversation with her mother and RJH's words to her made me realize SR said she "felt sorry for breathing" and then RJH soon after said he's "grateful the person I love is still breathing." - OMG.

Honestly I can see why SYJ cries outside her scenes - her character must have had an emotionally (not financially) difficult childhood and as any good actress she immerses herself into her role... having RJH by her side must be so overwhelmingly positive in and for her life.  It's probably easy for SR to grow up dismissing the idea of having children altogether seeing how she was treated but eh look at her now, "life truly is unexpected and full of surprises" ; )

Members of the elite or those from the highest songbun (some form of caste system) in NK are exempted from military conscription that's why RJH was able to study abroad at a normal age people around the world go to university. Otherwise, at 17 he would have been drafted as a compulsory enlistment into military service for the next 10 years.

Also, having at least one of Papa Ri's sons in the military means that younger generations of their family are secured of their elite status and the economic/political/social entitlements that they currenly enjoy in NK.

Did she?! Is there an article about it?? I Knew It!! I said so HERE . (If y'all haven't watched that movie, please do. I highly recommend it.

No, there's no article but I figured that one day they would have to refer to it on the show one way or another as the quote might be wrongly attributed to CLOY and not the The Lunchbox movie. There were already plenty of social media posts quoting the line accompanied with pictures of Se Ri and RJH.

Yes, please. Let's not go there. It's the cheesiest of all cheesy tropes, next to amnesia. But it's so tempting, right? Especially since SD's mom is supposed to be widowed (or believed to be widowed). :joy:

    love CLOY.

I guessed that YSR is a twin to SD. Both of them love fashion. Both are a strong young lady. SD's mum character slightly similar to YSR (their craziness ha ha) , whereas SD looks like YSR's dad (stiff). Perhaps YSR's dad was a SK's spy before. hahahah

I want this observation to expand to a theory that Se Ri and Seo Dan have the same dad. :D

@campanulah, same building from Something in the Rain and JHIs character was working in the gaming industry. A small homage to that as well.

Awesome. I totally forgot that JHI played a game developer in SITR. The background music when the F5 entered the building definitely sounds like one of the music in the game, or a variation of it. There's even a scene on CLOY which has a background music that sounds like the famous theme played during Stranger Things opening credits. I forget which but I'll mark it down when I replay some episodes in the future.

And speaking of credits, the writer credited on this scene the source of the "Sometimes the wrong train takes you to the right destination" quote, which is the Indian movie "The Lunchbox". Nice gesture!

SD AND ALBERTO...I can see a love story and a marriage...who knows? If her uncle is a corrupt officer maybe  she will marry Alberto  become a British citizen and leave NK ...they did make it clear if somebody makes a mistake his familly pays too ...

I think Alberto will be stuck in North Korea for a while -- at least for the next 10 years. The reason why he is there is bec he's waiting out until the statute of limitations for the crimes he committed in SK expires. His British citizenship cannot even help him circumvent S Korean laws since SK has an extradition treaty with the UK (and 30+ other countries), which means the UK government can surrender an alleged criminal like him to S Korean authorities. North Korea, which is practically cut out from the rest of the world, is already a safe haven for him.

I'd wager that he will continue living a life of a con man. A Korean man with a Spanish-sounding name Alberto is obviously using it as an alias to get away from his previous crimes. It also suggests that he's been dirfting around many countries operating fraudulent enterprises. Can he be a North Korean citizen then? I haven't heard of a British who acquired a NK citizenship but there have been Americans who did. So it's not impossible. However, a NK citizenship will hinder his movement around the world as he will need NK government's permission to leave the country, unless he works for the NK government itself to carry out its businesses worldwide. N Korean diplomats are usually tasked to do this in their effort to earn foreign currency amidst international economic sanctions imposed on NK. In Berlin, Germany, for example, a big popular hostel there is actually owned by North Korea. In other countries in Europe, NK runs lucrative realty businesses renting out properties to unknowing tenants. Alberto being Alberto is very much capable of engaging in much dirtier ventures than that, which will surely earn him brownie points from the 'General'. LOL

Having said that, if he goes down that path, it will not be too difficult for him to pursue a relationship with SD in North Korea. However, recent episodes suggest that he's beginning to rethink his career defrauding people. So, who knows.
