제작 일선에서 맞닥뜨리는 현실적인 고충들

Q앞으로 드라마계를 이끌어 갈, 일선에 있는 제작진들의 목소리를 듣고자 자리를 마련했습니다.우선 지난 시즌에 가장 힘덜었던 점은 어떤 것이 있을까요?

함 - 솔직히 방송 펑크에 대한 부담이죠. <얼렁뚱땅 흥신소> 촬영 마지막 주에는 전부 다 동굴 안에서 벌어지는 신이었는데, 조명도 어렵고, 장소도 협소하다 보니 진도가 안 나갔죠.대본도 빨리 나와서 일주일 정도 시간이 있었거든요. 원래는 석 달 전쯤엔 촬영이 들어가써야 했는데, 생각한 날짜보다 늦게 촬영이 들어가서 초반에 많이 찍질 못했어요. 제 생각엔 8~10부 정도 정도 찍고 들어가는 거였는데, 6회를 다 못 찍었거든요. 일반적으로 그 정도 찍었으면 적게 찍은 것은 아니고 평균인데, 이 드라마는 촬영은 시간 소요가 많이 됐어요. 제가 좀 오래 찍는다는 말도 있고. (웃음) 누구 탓이 아니라 제 탓이죠. 캐스팅을 즐기는 편이라 공을 많이 들이기도 했구요.

혹독한 제작환경, 사전제작은 대안인가?

Q 미국처럼 공동창작 형태로, 크리에이터가 이야기를 만들고 도제가 배워서, 나머지 시즌을 이끌어나가는 형태가 대안이 될 수도 있지 않을까 싶어요. 또 하나, 드라마계의 뜨거운 감자인 사전제작제 문제로 넘어가죠, 사전제작제로 반드시 가야한다는 입장과 갈 수 없는 현실적인 문제들이 있던데요.

함- 지금 같은 시스템에서 사전제작제가 되기에는 방송사의 편성 자체가 너무 늦은 것 같아요. 방송이 될지 안 될지 모르는 상태에서 제작을 하는 것은 제작사로서 굉장히 부담스러운 선택이겠죠. 방송사에서 실제로 편성될 드라마의 경우에도 편성 확정이 늦어요. 지금처럼 내부 PD와 제작사에 있는 어느 작가와 함께하는 시스템에서 편성을 빨리 안 해주면 너무나 폐해가 커요. 말할 수는 없지만 너무나 후진적인 일들이 많아요. 그래서 허접한 드라마가 나올 수밖에 없는 것들이 있어요.

Q 예전 60분이었던 시절에 본편은 50분이 조금 넘어서 끝났을 때와 비교해서 오늘날처럼 15분 정도 늘어났다고 하면, 연출가 입장에서의 부담과, 작가 입장에서 대본을 쓸 때 스트레스는 어느 정도인지요?

함 - KBS는 너무 긴 거 싫어해요. 근데 저는 조금 오버 돼도 그냥 테이프 던져주고 나와 버리거든요. (웃음) 저희 드라마에는 광고가 워낙 안 붙었어요. 70분 물이면 표준 편성 시간이 67분이기 때문에 알맹이는 60분이고, 7분의 광고가 붙는 건데 알매이는 항상 60분이 나오는데 광고가 30초밖에 안 붙으니까, 6분30초 정도가 남아 버리는 거거든요. 그래서 방송 시간이 짧았던 경우는 있죠. 70분 다 나온 적도 있는데 그건 알맹이가 70분이었던 거죠. 이번은 안 잘랐지만, 만일 신을 꼭 잘라야 되면 굳이 재미있지는 않은데 내용에는 큰 흐름에 방해가 안 되는, 그렇지만 이 신 때문에 이 대본이 좋은 대본인, 그런 신을 자르게 되거든요. 제가 보기에는 드라마에 종사하는 사람이 인간적으로 일해야 하는게 맞는 것 같아요. 굉장히 비인간적으로 일하고 있거든요. 사실 우리 스태프들이 들으면 "자기나 빨리 찍지, 예술하지 말지, 지미짚 좀 그만 써" 할 것 같지만.(웃음) 그리고 배우들도 대본을 보고 연기하는 것과 어디 들어갈 지도 모르는 신을 연기하는 거랑은 다르죠. 인간적인 예의도 아니고요. 그런 차원에서 인간적으로 일할 수 있고 서로에게 예의를 지킬 수 있는 방향에서 보면, 쫓기지 않는 선만 돼도 좋겠다는 생각을 해요. 미니시리즈로 보면 한 50% 정도만 찍고 들어가면, 많이 쫓기진 않을 걸요.

Q 적어도 두 달 전에는 들어가야 하나요?

함- 그런데 제작사에서 안 조하해요(웃음) 제가 처음에 <얼렁뚱땅 흥신소>를 하려고 했을 땐, 아주 이상적인 생각을 했었죠. 석달 전에 촬영 들어가고, 일주일에 5일만 촬영하고 하루는 스태프 회의하고 하루는 헌팅하구요. 이렇게 초등학생처럼 단순한 생각을 했었죠. 스태프들의 경우는 일당이잖아요. 그렇기 때문에 촬영일수는 같은데 석 달이나 되면 스태프들은 손해예요. 그런 점도 바뀌어야 해요. 작품당 계약을 해야하고. 지금 형태로 기간을 늘이면 어쨌든 단가는 올라갈 수 밖에 없어요. 스태프들 입장에서는 1년에 세 편 찍을 걸 두 편밖에 못 찍으니까요.

지금은 외주 제작 드라마가 많으니까 실제로 드는 돈이 얼마인지는 잘 모르겠지만, 방송사에서 주는 돈은 똑같잖아요. 제가 방송국에 와서 보고 희한했던 건 뭐냐면, 어느 미니시리즈를 하든지 표준 제작비는 똑같다는 거죠. 영화는 스크립트에 따라 예산 규모가 달라지는게 정상인데, 드라마들은 <태왕사신기>를 해도 회당 1억, <커피프린스>를 해도 1억이라는 거죠.

매니지먼트와 캐스팅

Q 어쨌든 지금 현재의 매니지먼트 시스템이란 게 문제가 많다고 생각해요. 이게 캐스팅과 관련된 문제기도 하고, 배우 수급 전반에 관한 문제일 수도 있죠.

함 - 그렇다고 공채탤런트 제도는 반대예요. 실제로 캐스팅해야 할 피디들이 뽑아야 하는데, 윗분들이 뽑으시기 때문에 뽑는 사람 따로, 쓰는 사람 따로가 되요. 그래서 서로 관계도 불편해지고, 미안해지고, 그런 부분들이 있는 것 같아요.

함- 저는 단막극 캐스팅할 때도 그렇고, 대본을 보면 후보가 많이 생각 안나는 스타일이에요. 기본적으로 시놉을 주는 사람이 몇 명 안돼요. 대신 그 안에서 해결이 안 되면 피곤해 지는 거예요. 새로운 생각을 하든지, 마음을 바꾸든지, 아니면 모르던 사람을 찾든지 해야 하니까요. <얼렁뚱땅 흥신소> 의 경우도 네 명 캐스팅이 제일 중요하고, 그 네 명이 드라마의 대부분을 차지하니까 다 잘 어울리고, 누구 한 사람 모나지 않게 가자는 게 처음 생각이었고요. 배우를 만나면 연기를 안 시키고 한 시간 넘게 다른 이야기를 해요. 같이 일할 사람이니까, 온도가 맞는지를 보는 거예요. 이 사람이 같이 술 한잔 할 수 있는 사람인가를 보죠. 사실 스타캐스팅을 하려고 했어요. 제가 제작발표회 떄 웃기려고 했던 '전부 1순위가 아니다'라는 말이 기사에 제목으로 떳더라고요. 근데 그건 어느 미니시리즈나 그래요. 1순위로 캐스팅되는 미니시리즈는 없어요.

리얼리티를 위하여

Q 이제 드라마가 예쁜 모습만, 깨끗한 모습만 담아내는 시기는 끝난 것 같아요. 쓰레기가 나뒹구는 <케세라세라>의 밤거리, <얼렁뚱땅 흥신소> 같은 경우도 우리가 지나다니는 종로 골목의 공기가 확 다가오는 부분이 있어요.

함 - 상표 노출 심하게 규제하는 건 정말 짜증나요. 스타벅스나, 커피빈이라면 딱 오는 느낌이 있잖아요. 말도 안되게 '커피콩' 이러고 핸드폰에 뭐 붙여야 하고.

Q 외주 제작사 협회 한 분이 그런 이야기를 했어요. 한류로 해외에 드라마가 나갈 텐데 적극적으로 상표 노출을 시켜야 국산 브랜드의 가치를 더 높일 수 있지 않냐고. 그런 논리로도 어느 정도 허용이 되어야 하는 부분이 아닌가 싶어요.

함- 나이키 머리 떼는 거 그거 뭡니까. 다 아는데. 오죽하면 의상 팀 친구들 기술이 발전해서 그 옷하고 똑같은 색, 무늬의 테이프를 만들어요. 또 고급기술 배운 사람들이 특수영상실에 앉아서 상표 지우고 있는 모습도 너무 불쌍해요.

Q물론 드라마라는 게 공공재긴 합니다만 어차피 산업 매체이기 때문에 양성화를 시키는 게 작가 입장에서도 편하지 않을까요? 은밀하게 PPL을 해야 하는 부분들이 많잖아요.

함 - 지금처럼 천편일률적으로 단속하는 게 아니라, 이게 드라마와 아무 상관없이 홍보로 쓰였는지 심사하는 기구가 있어야 한다고 생각해요. 물론 지금보다 어렵고 애매하고 분쟁의 소지가 있겠지만. 그런 건 정말 어렵게 하는게 맞는 것 같아요.

i'm watching this on kbs world now, it is really good and funny. i like the four leads, they are great. Lee Min Ki is really funny, especially his character's one sided love for Eun Jae. also the comic book guy using all of his comic knowledge in real life situations, and the fortune teller lady are hilarious. i like how the show can be so funny and then really serious, each character seems to have their own sad story. i can't wait to see how this drama ends.

Before, the site was promoting a release for the Director's Cut DVD + a Season 2, but now I see that the focus is only on Season 2.

So they will really pursue for season 2? That's a good news for me already. Personally, if given the choice i prefer they make EIA season 2 rather than release director's cut DVD coz it just more or less the same story. But if they can make both it would be great...

Wow, only 20 something pages? This was such a great show! It was like a live-action Scooby Doo, but much better made than the actual Sarah Michelle Geller Scooby Doo, which was god awful.

I hope people give this show a chance. It is farcical, hilarious, silly, and pretty much a live action cartoon, the ones I watched growing up after school ended for the day. it is NOT your typical drama, obviously, and doesn't have romance, at least the kind we expect, and what romance is there is cute and really subtle, but effective. It is a detective story.

I recommend it, if you want to see a different kind of K-drama, but one with potential and heart.

i just finished this drama. the last episode was way too sad, no funny moments, kind of disappointing. but episode 15 was so funny, Muyeol said to Huiegung..."the men stayed behind, if word gets out i'll be an embarassment". i can't believe EunJae and Muyeol kissed, i would have liked it better if their love stayed one sided. also i don't think anything else was really resolved, but they still remained w/ their goal of getting the gold and they realized how important they were to each other. it was so funny in episode 10 when Yong Soo cursed the police to get out of that situation. also when Huiegung gave the finger to the spy camera, i saw this on tv in America and i couldn't believe they were able to show that. i get why Lee Min Ki was nominated for his role, he was really great in this. the whole cast was great, the storyline had so many twists and turns, i think in episode 12 & 14, those were the most surprising. and the ost is really good, thanks. overall a really good drama.

it was definetaly different and exciting with spark of romance

all the episodes were great and i liked how each character was able to show their emotions in their own seperate ways =]

yup, it seems that way...I can always hope that they can still be incorrect. I still made my order for the drama. At least it's good to see that at least 73 people (including me) will be buying this set, considering its low ratings.

This was the greatest show of 2007, in any country. The ensemble cast were utterly brilliant. And the fansubs by WITHS2 are fantastic! It certainly deserves a second season in spite of the low numbers.
