“진짜 게이 아니냐는 질문이 가장 듣기 좋은 칭찬이에요”

‘와플선기’ 배우 김재욱(25)은 드라마 ‘커피프린스 1호점’에서 한결이와 은찬이가 동성애를 한다고 해도 “그게 뭐 대수냐”고 했다. 그런 그가 약 1년 뒤 영화 ‘서양골동양과자점 앤티크’(이하, 앤티크)에서 파티쉐 게이 선우를 연기했다. 보통의 게이도 아니고 남자든 여자든 누구나 한번 보면 첫눈에 반하는 ‘마성의 게이’다. 하지만 그도 정복 못한 남자가 있었으니, 바로 고교 동창생 진혁(주지훈). 천재 파티쉐 선우는 진혁이 그에게 꽂히지 않은 덕분에 진혁이 운영하는 케이크숍 ‘앤티크’에 들어가 다른 세 남자와 얽히고설킨 생활을 시작한다. 한 여자를 지고지순하게 사랑하는 선기(커피프린스 1호점)에서 여러 남자를 울리는 선우(앤티크), 남자다운 당당한 남자 추발소(바람의 나라)로 변신의 변신을 거듭하고 있다.

#진짜 게이 아니냐는 말, 내겐 칭찬

여자가 봐도, 남자가 봐도 예쁜 얼굴이다. 그는 이번 영화 ‘앤티크’를 통해 “진짜 게이 아니냐”는 말을 많이 듣고 있다. 안 그래도 ‘커피프린스 1호점’에서 가녀리면서 선이 아름다운 얼굴을 가진 그는 ‘앤티크’에서 동성애자 파티쉐 선우 역을 맡아 ‘게이스러운’ 이미지를 갖게 됐다. 하지만 지금 그에게 ‘게이스럽다’는 말이 가장 기분 좋은 칭찬이다.

“그 말이 제겐 가장 듣기 좋은 칭찬이에요. (주)지훈이 형이 어느 날 영화 찍다가 ‘너 진짜 게이 같다’고 하는데 기분이 너무 좋았죠. 제 연기가 자연스럽다는 말이잖아요. ‘앤티크’ 촬영 전 2개월 동안 아침 점심 저녁으로 마성의 게이가 되기 위한 ‘게이 수업’을 받았어요. 선우는 파리에서 공부한 천재 파티쉐니까 케이크 만들기는 물론 불어도 잘해야 하고 마성의 게이로 춤도 잘 춰야 했죠. 오전 9시부터 12시까진 케이크를 굽고 2시부터 4,5시까진 불어를, 6,7시부터 11시까진 섹시 댄스를 배웠어요. 그리고 남는 시간엔 민규동 감독님과 동료 배우들과 대본을 리딩했어요. 완전 스파르타식이었죠.”

그의 이같은 노력 덕분에 ‘앤티크’ 속 게이바에서 춘 ‘마성의 게이 섹시 댄스’는 눈길을 사로잡다 못해 혼을 쏙 빼놓는다.

#남자와의 키스신 느낌이요? 노코멘트!

김재욱은 프랑스 남자배우 앤디 질렛과 짜릿한 키스신을 촬영했다. 사실 딥키스신도 있었지만 15세 관람가를 위해 편집돼 가볍거나 평범한 키스신만 확인할 수 있다. 남자끼리의 키스 느낌이 어땠냐는 질문을 조심스레 던져봤더니 역시 조심스럽게 대답이 돌아왔다.

“여자가 수염 기른 남자와 키스하면 따갑다고 하는데 그런 느낌이 어떤 건지 알겠더라고요. 짜릿했냐고요? 노코멘트예요.(웃음) 그동안 게이를 다룬 작품들을 보면 여성스러운 점이 부각된 게이가 많았는데 저는 그렇게 연기하지 않았어요. 여성스럽지 않으면서도 게이스러운 캐릭터를 표현했어요. 그래서 선우는 말투도 나긋나긋하지 않죠. 언젠가는 게이 역할을 꼭 해보고 싶었어요. ‘커피프린스 1호점’나 ‘브로크백 마운틴’의 동성애를 보면서 그런 생각이 들기도 했죠. 모델 활동할 때 주위에 게이가 많으니 아무래도 남들보다는 관심이 더 있었어요. 그들의 삶은 어떨까 궁금했지만 우리와 별반 다를 게 없는, 같은 사람이더라고요. 촬영을 위해 이태원의 유명한 게이바에 갔는데 처음 들어갈 때 공기부터 달랐어요. ‘이런 세상도 있구나’ 했죠. 그곳에서 어떤 남자가 제 옆을 지나가면서 엉덩이를 움켜쥔 뒤 윙크하고 가더라고요. 완전 성범죄죠. 당시 너무 화가 나 싸울 뻔했어요.”

그에게 어떤 배우가 되고 싶냐고 물으니 “밥벌이 위해 현장 나가는 배우는 되기 싫다”며 책임감의 중요성을 강조했다.

“욕심 없이 접근하는 배우가 되고 싶지 않아요. 영화나 드라마는 나 혼자만의 작업이 아니니까 책임감이 중요해요. 남자에겐 ‘저 새끼 책임감 없다’는 말이 제일 굴욕적이에요. 열정적으로 일해야죠. 꿈이요? 꿈은 아직 이룬 게 없어요. 딱히 이런 게 꿈이라고는 말하기 어려워요.”
