Hi,

I am totally new here but not to say that I have never heard of Kim Nam Gil or that I just recently discovered him. In fact, he is my forgotten crush when way back then, I used to have a hard crush on him as Bidam in Queen Seondeok. Alas, many years have passed and he has not done that much drama either and my bad that my attention swayed.

Anyway, I am glad "Live Up To Your Name" relinquishes my old feeling for Kim Nam Gil and am happy that he has not lose that sparks, still the great expressive actor whom I am currently enjoying watching in a new light with his endearing comedic performance.

Since I have only started joining soompi forum in 2016, so it sets to look that I will alternately visiting Lee Jun Ki, Park Hyung Sik and now Kim Nam Gil's forums.

Anyway, if there's anything about these actors that captured my interest :- is that they all look mighty hot with long hair and sageuk attire   and above all, delivering spectacular sageuk performance.

Off to rewatching Bidam in Queen Seondeok.

The one to blame for my Kdrama crush is also KNG, but I continued to follow his acting because I considered him a finest and a versatile one. In the meantime I discovered more korean actors( looks like I'm not the faithfull type) , but I still love his "flavour". Waiting for the drama to end, usually don't have the patience to wait for next episodes.

He is one of my favorite actors now... I really liked him in QSD as Bidam, then watched his movie Pirates and thought he was so awesome in that movie and then watched Portrait of a Beauty and still can't get enough of him. I think he's so charismatic whenever he's acting and his voice is soo soothing, I could listen to him talk whole day.

I just saw some of his videos in IG that people took while he was out in public today, I never thought that he is so thin  but he look so cool and tall and so handsome!

He sounded a bit like Lee Jun Ki especially when he speaks in sageuk tone. But you are right. I love his voice.

Bidam will always remain as one of my favourite characters in sageuk. So layered, so complicated, so multi-faceted and memorable. No one can speak of Kim Nam Gil without mentioning Bidam. Bidam is so iconic. Oh, how I remember he broke my heart ten ways to Sunday when Bidam met his tragic ending. Still sobbing over it till this day.

Anyway, is that a recent video? Yes, he looks kind of thin but still ok. That makes him look very lanky and I like that. I did not noticed that he was that tall in QSD, probably because he was a little bit chubbier especially in the early episodes. But when I watched him in "Shark", I noticed he is really very lanky and my mom kept gushing over how good he looks in jeans. LOL.

By the way, I am sadly missing the pornstache.

I seriously regret getting into Queen Seondok too late, I wasn't that into k-drama back when it started airing and then they aired it in my country around 2010 but I didn't watched it. The first time that I watched it was around 2013 (after watching Empress Ki( and I got so addicted to it that I had to re-watch it a few times. Too bad that there's no one else for me to chat about it, so I can only fan girl for Bidam alone lol. Yeah his character as Bidam is very iconic that if you mentioned Bidam then automatically you will think of Kim Nam Gil and I think there are lots of characters in Sageuk whose portrayal or characters was also taken from Bidam. He was cute as the Vagabond Bidam and super handsome as Hwarang Bidam ( I actually saved lots of screen caps of him in that lol) and super hot as matured Bidam (I am not into mustache but Kim Nam Gil was so hot even with mustache) I cried a river seeing the last episode and he did a really good act in that scene, when he looked at QSD and asked "is that her majesty over there?" his face clearly show that longing, guilt, sadness and then when he remembered what Mishil told him while looking at the sky, you can see how much he blame himself for what happened to him and when he looked at QSD while thinking..he's 70 paces away from Deokman. I really love that scene, it's one of the best I've ever seen. I was just sad though that Bidam died without having a peace of mind because he didn't get to deliver his message. QSD learned of it but Bidam didn't.

Yes it's a recent video taken from yesterday... he was on the subway I think (for Lotte) and people saw him there, took photos and videos of him. I didn't really noticed his height that much..probably because his co-stars are often as tall as him.

I am one of those who wanted to see him without mustache so lol I am fine with it. He's been rocking that mustache for years, so it's nice to see him without it once in a while.

I haven't seen "shark" is it good?

Oh boy, the death scene of Bidam is so heartbreaking. I bet, the most tragic death in K-dramaland so far. I especially love his voice when he challenged Yushin for a duel. That scene is so beautiful yet heartbreaking at the same time.

I was experiencing the same happening with QSD. When I first lurking at Koala's Playground, I noticed so many postings on Bidam. Bidam here, Bidam there but never understood the hype. I never bothered to check QSD in the first place because 62 episodes really scared the hell out of me until I found myself wildly entertained by "Dong Yi" and so I decided to give it a try and boy, do I regretted not joining the show earlier. I was obsessed with Bidam and I could not talk about him to anyone. So I went all out campaigning to my mom (a sageuk's enthusiast) to watch and thank goodness, she was the only willing to listen to my talks on Bidam day and night. Anyway, after "Live Up To Your Name" relighting my crush on KNG, I revisited QSD and saved a lot of Bidam's screencaps and now, my office's desktop and handphone's wallpaper are Bidam again (bye bye Wang So and Ji Dwi-rang).

I honestly enjoyed "Shark". I don't understand the low ratings nor the negativity the show received as evidently commented on Dramabeans. I don't necessarily love the show as I loved QSD but KNG was perfect in it. If you enjoy something mellow and noir tone, you should try watching. And bonus is that KNG is super hot in it.

Anyway, my favourite Bidam's scene in QSD is the scene where he challenged Munno for a duel. That was intense and that was the reason why I love Bidam - he such a gray character and so bada**.

Shark wasn't bad, but I'm not sure if I could be objective, when I follow a certain artist I tend to be soften; personally i prefer Bad Guy, despite of his rushed ending. Still, my recommendations are No Regret, talking about master acting (if you are not homophobic), Lovers Vanished... and his later movies.

@LyraYoo Yeah I was surprised to see  that you've been administering this thread for more than 10 years now :o *bows*

It's just sad that we cannot get much from KNG, I think he's too private but I like it at the same time since it have that mysterious aura. I wish I can see him in person though lol. I honestly thought he looked so handsome in that black attire.

@lyserose Yeah he's really hot as Bidam, which one do you prefer though? Vagabon.Hwarang or the Royal one?

I was actually really annoyed with the way Munno treated Bidam. Probably because I expect a lot from him, he is man of wisdom and yet he failed to raise Bidam properly. The way he scolded him in front of everyone, it was hard to get those wild gingers but he didn't understand that. And his constant denial of Bidam, If feel sorry for him that he had to beg his master that he will do everything but Munno was so stiff and pushed him away, that must have been so painful. And I do not understand why he had to tell him that he wouldn't be able to beat Yushin no matter how much he try, because both of them fought in the tournament but Yushin had a longer rest and yet he could barely open his eyes, Bidam was still full of energy... so I honestly doubt Yushin will win if Bidam fought him seriously. But that was also the start of Bidam's jealousy towards Yushin. Everything that Bidam said to Munno was right.  I just really hate Munno that time. I am glad that he realized he was wrong but still... the damage has been done.

My favorite scene was when he tried to escape from the palace after thinking that he failed to fool Mishil, that was a really awesome fight. Although I really wished they had shown us Bidam's fight while wearing his hwarang clothes, he never fought while wearing that costume.

I am not really into revenge drama, but that girl in Shark was the same girl from Pirates right? I heard they were dating...not sure if it's true though hehe.

Oh I saw No Regret and love it lol. Both actors did a good job acting as gay lovers. I wish he will do more light hearted drama.

HI @LyraYoo As I said before, I have only started joining soompi in 2016 (Thanks to Moon Lovers Scarlet Heart) and by that time, I have (shamefully) forgotten about Kim Nam Gil. He is just so below the radar, so low-key and seldom on the media.

I like "Shark" better. "Bad Guy" feels like trying too hard. I am not homophobic but I am scared of explicit sex scene. That is why I refrained myself from watching "Portrait of a Beauty". I am a very conservative Asian so I really have problem watching my fave performing sex scene even when I know it's not real. For that reason, I prefer Korean drama actors instead of movie actors because Korean movies tend to feature sex a lot and I just could not take it.

This is one tough question to answer. I think I prefer Vagabon Bidam. Yes, he was least attractive as Vagabon Bidam but this was when he is happiest, carefree and living his life to the fullest. Once he became a Hwarang, he adopted that responsibility and then he became a royal and turned into this very unhappy and insecure person which make me really sad. So I say, I love love love Vagabon Bidam - cunning, playful, witty, sneaky and street smart.

Yes, I also do not understand why Munno said that he could not beat Yushin. Bidam by far is the greatest swordfighter in Silla, only could be beaten by Munno and Jilsuk. He is literally a killing machine. I strongly believe that Munno said that to dampen his spirit but we all viewers know who would eventually emerging a winner should they really ended up in a duel. My bet is all on Bidam. Even when he was already severely injured in his last fight to get to Deokman, the Hwarangs themselves could not even strike him down. Like Bidam said, "Anyone who successfully strike me down will go down in history". And Munno, despite being a righteous man is one of my most hated character in QSD, because he failed to shape Bidam and contributing to him being all twisted and insecure.

I read about this dating rumors too but both sides have stated that the rumors are not true. Plus, Kim Nam Gil has been very honest about his closeness to Son Ye Jin. When he held a fan meeting in Japan and asked whom he would like to have a soul cleansed with by listening to the orchestra that he produced, he without hesitant mentioning Son Ye Jin. So, I doubt that they are dating, most likely are close friends. He also ever been rumored to date Jang Nara. Don't know how true is that but it was just so random.

Happy that this thread has gain a bit of attention lately, KNG deserves attention and appreciation, I love his versatility as an actor, actually I usually have a crush on those actors who immerse themselves in their role and give their everything.
