Twinkling Watermelon, a fresh addition to tvN's Monday-Tuesday drama lineup, is a fantasy-filled coming-of-age story that revolves around Eun Gyeol (Ryeoun). Eun Gyeol, a young CODA (child of deaf adult) boy blessed with extraordinary musical talent, finds himself transported back in time to the year 1995. Here, he embarks on an enchanting journey and forms a band with none other than his own father, Yi Chan (Choi Hyun Wook).

The highlight video opens with the tale of Eun Gyeol, the only hearing member in a family of deaf individuals. By a stroke of fate, Eun Gyeol begins learning guitar from the owner of "Viva Music" (Chun Ho Jin). He secretly engages in band activities, unbeknownst to his parents. However, as his double life is exposed, he faces conflicts with his father (Choi Won Young) and is forced to choose between music and his family.

After much contemplation, Eun Gyeol decides to sell his guitar at a peculiar musical instrument shop. But he is met with a bewildering sight as he steps into an era he had never known. It turns out he has time-traveled to the year 1995, a time of his father Lee Chan's high school days. As he desperately searches for a way back to the present, Eun Gyeol encounters his father, who is now the same age as him, along with his mother, Cheong Ah (Shin Eun Soo), and his father's first love, Se Kyeong (Seol In Ah).

Upon discovering that his father has feelings for someone other than his mother, Eun Gyeol endeavors to thwart his father's romantic pursuits.

As he strives to play the role of cupid between his father and Cheong Ah, the revelation of Lee Chan's previously undisclosed past adds an intriguing twist.

With Eun Gyeol determined to reshape his father Lee Chan's destiny, the story also delves into the relationships and aspirations of four youngsters - Eun Gyeol, who connects the worlds of sound and silence; Lee Chan, who pours his heart and soul into everything he does; the cello virtuoso Se Kyeong; and  Cheong Ah, a visually impaired woman who wonders if her world can also shine.

The newly released teaser gives a preview of the first episode in which Lee Chan is working part-time at the ice cream store Se Kyung visits. When Lee Chan holds up an ice cream cone with four scoops of ice cream, Se Kyung coldly remarks, “That’s not what I ordered.”

Lee Chan insists that the order is correct and comments, “It’s watermelon sugar [flavor], right? I very slightly and gently added my feelings on top.” Se Kyung remains unmoved as she responds, “I’m sorry, but I don’t think I can carry that,” prompting Lee Chan to carefully deliver the ice cream to her table.

However, when Lee Chan’s friend suddenly appears with news that his grandmother is on the way, Lee Chan is quick to run away after introducing himself to Se Kyung. He bids farewell by saying, “Let’s meet again.”

Premiere Watch: Twinkling Watermelon

by missvictrix

29URR32JZV_1.jpg

Time slot: Monday-Tuesday
Broadcaster: tvN
Genre: Fantasy, romance, music
Episode count: 16

Reasons to watch: Dramaland is so good at hijinks — especially so when it comes to family time-slip situations – and I’m expecting the same laughs and tears that we’ve gotten from thematically similar situations like in 18 Again or Go Back Spouses. In Twinkling Watermelon we have Ryeoun traveling back into ye olde 1990s where he meets his high-school-aged father (Choi Hyun-wook). There are romantic entanglements, time-slip identity confusions, high school rock bands — and, I’m sure, lots of moments that will grip our hearts as we learn about this family, who they are, and who they become.

TL;DR: Time-slip father-son hijinks, with flower boy band components

I've only watched the first episode so far, but it's a lot different than I expected from the title and synopsis. Thus far, I feel like the title gives off a sort of fluff feeling, like comedy but not a lot of depth. But the drama itself...is not like that at all. The deep feelings between all of the different characters and the problems those feelings foreshadow area  lot deeper and more serious than you'd expect from a title like...Twinkling Watermelon. I'm super impressed by the heartfelt acting thus far. I think this is going to be a good one, the kind that grips your heart and pulls on it. (I suppose it could all change from here on out, but the vibe it's set out with at the beginning is impressive.)

Twinkling Watermelon: Episodes 1-2

by Dramaddictally

Twinkling Watermelon is here and ready to play its way into our hearts one note at a time. Well, actually, make that two notes at a time — because we’ve got one guitar-playing band member in the present and another wannabe rockstar in the past. Their worlds are about to collide when our present-day hero slides back to 1995 and realizes that time travel is not only possible, it’s got an ironic sense of humor.

EPISODES 1-2

We’re off to a great start with this one — funny, charming, relatable, and just a little bit sneaky. We get lots of setup in these first two episodes, so the real story won’t take off until next week, but we needed all this backstory to show us just how high the stakes are — likely so they can be driven into our hearts at precisely the right melty moment down the road.

We first get to know our hero when he’s not yet a teen and right away the drama wants us to see just how much pressure is on this tiny tot. In a family of four — two parents, two sons — HA EUN-GYEOL (played by Jung Hyun-joon in his younger iteration) is the only one that can hear. His mom and dad (Seo Young-hee and Choi Won-young) are both deaf and so is his hyung.

This is not only a fascinating take on the timeworn idea of how one can feel out of place in their family, but a really believable setup for why our hero is going to need to let loose later on (read: conflict). Since he’s “the voice that connects their family to the world” (in the words of Dad), he’s taken on the role of an adult from a very young age, protecting his family however he can.

For example, his parents run a restaurant and we see him talking to customers, handling bad business transactions, and having to watch his older brother while the parents are busy. Phew. That’s a lot to keep up with for any 12-year-old, but this one’s also got the highest grades in school, tons of awards, and a knack for guitar that he’ll find out about shortly. The boy is doing it all, and it’s only a matter of time before he’s going to break.

Did SG come from the future like Eungyeol or is she really the lady who gave him the guitar...

She's the lady who gave him the guitar.  We didn't get to see her daughter's face in the first episode, I wonder if Seol In Ah will be SG's daughter.
I find Choi Hyun Wook resembles Jang Kiyong.

Ryeoun Has An Endearing First Meeting With His Great-Grandmother In “Twinkling Watermelon”

Oct 3, 2023
by M. Lim

tvN’s “Twinkling Watermelon” has shared a sneak peek of the upcoming fourth episode!

“Twinkling Watermelon” is a fantasy coming-of-age drama in which a CODA (child of deaf adult) student born with a gift for music accidentally travels back in time to 1995 through a suspicious music shop. There, he forms the band Watermelon Sugar with other mysterious youths.

Ryeoun stars as Eun Gyeol, the only person who can hear in his family, who leads a double life as the perfect model student by day and a band guitarist by night. Choi Hyun Wook takes on the role of the passionate Lee Chan, who is full of Generation X vibes.

Spoilers

In the previous episode, Eun Gyeol’s life took an unexpected turn. After visiting a music shop to sell his guitar, he found himself transported back in time to 1995 and encountered his father Lee Chan, who was a high school student at the time. With no familiar faces or currency from that period, Eun Gyeol had no choice but to fervently follow Lee Chan, his sole lifeline, in order to avoid ending up homeless.

As fate would have it, Lee Chan is also in need of “a shield” to protect himself from the punishment attacks by his grandmother Go Yang Hee (Go Doo Shim) due to his terrible exam scores. After he introduces Eun Gyeol as his private tutor, the two embark on a father-son scheme that would prove both comical and poignant.

The newly released stills show the first meeting between Eun Gyeol and his great-grandmother as he steps foot into the Snail Boarding House, which is owned by Go Yang Hee, his great-grandmother—a person he had only heard of until then. In a separate scene, Lee Chan is desperately trying to evade his grandmother’s wrath with his report card fluttering through the air while Eun Gyeol observes this chaotic situation from the sidelines with a bewildered expression, sparking curiosity about their tumultuous first encounter.

Unaware that the two are telling lies, Go Yang Hee then proceeds to arrange a party at the boarding house to celebrate the arrival of her grandson’s private tutor. As Go Yang Hee and Lee Chan sing along to nostalgic tunes, Eun Gyeol’s eyes reveal mixed emotions as he watches them.

Director Son Jung Hyun commented, “Personally, the scene where the grandmother and Lee Chan sing at the boarding house and Eun Gyeol watches them, made me feel both heartwarming and sad for them. Please pay attention to Eun Gyeol’s narration as he looks at his father’s twinkling youth.”
