Based on the award-winning novel of the same name, “My Lovely Boxer” is a drama about a genius boxer named Lee Kwon Sook (Kim So Hye) and a cold-blooded sports agent named Kim Tae Young (Lee Sang Yeob), who doesn’t feel guilty about match fixing or resorting to any means necessary for the success of his athletes. WINNER’s Kim Jin Woo stars as Lee Kwon Sook’s first love and preschool vice principal Han Jae Min.

Previously, Tae Young promised Kwon Sook to go see a baobab tree together on her birthday, but the worst situation occurred due to the death of Kim Hee Won (Choi Jae Woong), and Tae Young ended up quitting his job as an agent.

Amidst this situation, the newly released stills capture Kwon Sook, who has not forgotten her promise with Tae Young, waiting for him alone on her birthday in a botanical garden where a baobab tree is.

My Lovely Boxer: Episodes 10-11

by DaebakGrits

Tensions are building, emotions are running high, and our bad guys have gone on the offensive to ensure that the boxing match follows their original plan. Although there is a lot of trouble brewing in the background, our story remains optimistic and wholesome because our boxer has found her focus and has a tribe that continues to support her.

EPISODES 10-11

I’m calling it now, My Lovely Boxer is going to go down as the most underrated drama of 2023. Whether you’re following it for the sportsmanship, the subtle romance, or the rich character development, I think we can all agree that this drama is pretty dang amazing, and I’m practically scratching my head bald trying to figure out why the ratings are so low. And this week, My Lovely Boxer accomplished something that even I was doubting it could do: it made me stick one foot on board the Kwon-sook and Tae-young ship.

And you might ask, “How did it do that, Daebakgrits, when you’re so stubbornly hung up on the maturity gap?” Well, the romance plot won me over (ironically) by having Tae-young’s actions align with my personal disapproval as he maintained boundaries with Kwon-sook despite his affection for her. He has romantic feelings for her hidden away, but he also has the sense not to act on them at this stage in their lives. Tae-young earned my respect, and the drama writers had me bowing in thanks that they did not turn their meetup at the botanical garden into a classic rom-com love confession moment, which would have been completely out of tune with the rest of our story.

Instead, when Tae-young shows up late to the baobab tree, his actions are noticeably restrained in comparison to Kwon-sook’s exuberance. Maybe part of his soberness is because he’s still a little shaken up after his phone call with Kim Oh-bok, his main contact in the match-rigging business who has finally come out of hiding. However, when he backed away from Kwon-sook’s adorably eager hug, the movement was a physical and metaphorical divide that he was consciously establishing between them.

Kwon-sook’s birthday is, thankfully, not without some liveliness and humor (I had a nice chuckle at the parrot calling Tae-young an idiot), but it does end on a somber note. Kwon-sook gently tests the waters to see how long Tae-young intends to stick around after her match, and she’s met with a vagueness that does not instill confidence in the longevity of their relationship. Of course, as we all know, this is largely due to the fact that Tae-young is playing a very dangerous game of Catch the Bad Guy, and the best case scenario is that he gets arrested (and possibly pardoned) for his involvement with the match-fixing along with the bad guys.

After Kwon-sook’s birthday, Tae-young goes off the grid again, tailing Oh-bok and his associates to find their hideout so he can gather evidence and put together a sting operation that will — hopefully — dismantle their underground organization and put them behind bars. Unfortunately, while he’s watching their movements, he realizes Oh-bok has now become a regular patron of Chul-yong’s restaurant, which cannot be good.

Tae-young, in rare display of aggression, attacks Oh-bok with a lead pipe and warns him away from Kwon-sook. Oh-bok puts up a nice act, pretending to be a weak underling just doing as he was told, but when Tae-young turns his evidence over to the police and they raid the new hideout for the match-rigging syndicate, further investigation reveals that Oh-bok is the mastermind behind the whole thing — and he and some of his thugs are still at large. Dun-dun-dun.

As you can imagine, Oh-bok is none too pleased with Tae-young’s betrayal. Unfortunately, Tae-young has made his weaknesses far too obvious, and one of them — Kwon-sook — is intricately connected to Oh-bok’s ability to make some fast cash and get back on his feet. Oh-bok needs Kwon-sook to lose her fight against Ah-reum, and given how he continues to lurk around Chul-yong’s restaurant, bad things must lay ahead for our boxer who has no intention of losing her next fight. This fact becomes all too clear to Oh-bok after he finagles his way into observing her training sessions and sees first-hand how impassioned and determined she’s become.

My Lovely Boxer: Episode 12 (Final)

by DaebakGrits

It’s going to be hard saying goodbye to our boxer and her support team, but My Lovely Boxer ends on an emotional and suspenseful note. Both our boxer and her manager are battling separate fights, but ultimately their convictions, strength, and faith in one another brings them to the ending of our tale.

EPISODE 12

We enter the final episode of My Lovely Boxer needing closure to three things: Kwon-sook and Ah-reum’s boxing match, Tae-young’s dealings with the match-riggers, and the relationship status of our main characters. Now, I know these three items may seem like a lot to accomplish in a hour — especially when we’ve all been majorly let down in the past by dramas that really screwed the pooch in their final moments — but luckily for us, this story has been driven by mostly internal conflicts and character development since the beginning.

Thus being, by the time we reach our final episode, all the emotional groundwork has been laid and resolved. It’s just a matter of ensuring the corresponding action goes down in a way that’s satisfying to viewers and feels in line with the previous episodes’ character development. Other than a few nit-picky personal complaints, I feel this drama concluded on an extremely high note. (Yay!)

Let’s begin with Kwon-sook, the once young, immature young woman who ran away from boxing three years ago because she feared and hated the sport her father forced her into pursuing. Her ill-timed departure from boxing caused a major career setback for her opponent, Ah-reum. Kwon-sook initially returned to the ring in order to retire a loser and regain her anonymity, but along the way she learned to respect the sport and her fellow boxers — even if she lacked the same passion that fueled their desire to be the best.

The Kwon-sook who enters the ring and fights Ah-reum has matured leaps and bounds over the course of our story, and instead of throwing the match, she’s determined to win so she can firmly close the door on her boxing career with no regrets. She has a rocky start, though, because she almost immediately realizes that Tae-young is not in the audience. She loses focus, and the distraction leaves her vulnerable to Ah-reum’s punches. She’s knocked to the mat during round one, and she lays there — both dazed from Ah-reum’s punch and despondent over Tae-young’s absence — while the referee counts to ten.

At this moment, Kwon-sook appears prepared to throw in the towel, which I find rather disappointing. While I believe it’s very in-character for her to be distracted and take a punch from Ah-reum, I’m less convinced that she would need a hallucination of Tae-young (superimposed over her father) to motivate her and stir her into regaining her footing. She has her own reasons for wanting to win this fight, and I struggled to believe that they’d disappear in Tae-young’s absence. As a consequence, it feels as though all her aforementioned character development went poof during this scene because of her affection for a man.

But to be fair, Tae-young really is the man of the hour (long finale), and Lee Sang-yub absolutely nailed his scenes, which were just as emotional and suspenseful as Kwon-sook’s boxing match. You see, while Kwon-sook is duking it out in the ring, Tae-young is fighting his own battle of survival. Oh-bok threatens to kill Tae-young if Kwon-sook doesn’t lose the fight, but instead of caving to Oh-bok’s demands, Tae-young stands by his conviction — Kwon-sook must fight an honest fight and put an end to her boxing career on her own terms. He promised her she could do this.

When it becomes clear that Tae-young is willing to die to protect the integrity of Kwon-sook’s boxing match, Oh-bok has two of his goons escort Chul-yong to the boxing venue, where he’s supposed to pass along a message to Kwon-sook: lose the match or Tae-young dies. Chul-yong wouldn’t be Chul-yong without some fun trash talk to the goons, but once he’s at Kwon-sook’s side, it’s clear he’s struggling with what he should do. On the one hand, Tae-young was passionately emphatic that Chul-yong should ignore the threat. But on the other hand, Chul-yong doesn’t want Tae-young dead — even if he’s not a fan of the man who captured his daughter’s heart. Ultimately, though, Kwon-sook inadvertently makes the decision for him.

Ah-reum is the toughest opponent Kwon-sook has ever faced, and she quickly realizes she’s in trouble. Her desire to win has her setting aside her previous boundaries and turning to her father. She asks him to coach her — to tell her how to defeat Ah-reum. Chul-yong hesitates, knowing any (sincere) advice he gives her could be Tae-young’s death sentence, but when faced with his daughter’s passionate, pleading eyes, he caves and tells her to punch through Ah-reum’s blocks. Eventually she’ll find the opening she needs.

Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching (October 7, 2023)

by DB Staff

So, what are we all watching this week?

What kept you reaching for more (or agonizing when there was no more), and what made you want to throw your remote through the screen? Time to weigh in…

missvictrix

My Lovely Boxer: I might have a few squabbles with the pacing, but overall I loved this drama so much, and I cried way more than I expected when Kwon-sook kissed the ring goodbye. This drama is more proof that ratings-tankers are often my most favorite works (my other go-to example of this is the masterpiece A Piece of Your Mind).

Dramaddictally

My Lovely Boxer: I will watch anything Kim So-hye does from now on. She was so believably brilliant as a tough boxer that’s also a vulnerable romantic. It’s hard to pull off but I bought every second of it. The script, the cast, the direction — this one’s a gem.

[2023 Year in Review] Bean of Greatness

by DB Staff

We’re bringing back our Bean series this year! Because sometimes you just need to wax poetic about which dramas you’re giving your beans to, and why. After all, summing up, sorting out, and making blanket pronouncements is what the 2023 Year in Review is all about.

Not to be confused with the famous Editors’ Picks, this bean series is much like our other DB team posts — each writer sharing their feels. Add your own personal Bean of Greatness in the comments and join the fun!

missvictrix: My Bean of Greatness goes to My Lovely Boxer. While it undoubtedly had its flaws, this drama’s strengths far outweighed them: amazing performances, depth of storytelling, and a wonderful sense of interiority. Far from a simple sports drama, this story of an unwilling boxing genius and her morally-gray agent operated on a lot of levels. It wasn’t just about winning, losing, or even rigging boxing matches — it was also about how the things you love, hate, fear, and desire affect who you are and who you become. With some beautifully constructed moments, and punch-in-the-gut emotions (literal and figurative), this drama’s raw emotion stayed with me for a long time.
