Jo Jung Suk and Shin Se Kyung’s upcoming drama “Captivating the King” has unveiled new posters!

Written by Kim Sun Deok of tvN’s “The Crowned Clown,” “Captivating the King” tells the cruel love story between King Yi In (Jo Jung Suk), a miserable king who harbors an emptiness within him despite his high position, and Kang Hee Soo (Shin Se Kyung), whose initial motive of seeking revenge against him transforms into an unexpected attraction.

Initially meeting as Prince Yi In and Kang Mong Woo, a female professional baduk (Go) player who disguises herself as a man, the two form a close bond through baduk while concealing their true identities. However, destiny takes a twist, bringing them back together in the palace—this time as a king and a spy. Now, their relationship is defined by mutual deception and hidden motives, adding layers of complexity to their entwined destinies.

Behind the veil on King Yi In’s poster is the silhouette of Prince Yi In donning a gat (Korean traditional hat). The striking contrast continues with King Yi In’s charismatic and robust presence emerging through the parted veil. His firmly sealed lips and subtly melancholic eyes tell a tale of his loneliness despite being in the highest position of authority. The caption, “I was captivated by you. Just as you were captivated,” unveils the intricate emotions of King Yi In as he falls for spy Kang Hee Soo, who is deceiving him.

Meanwhile, Kang Hee Soo’s poster unveils a glimpse of her dual identity as Kang Mong Woo. However, stealing the spotlight is her true persona as spy Kang Hee Soo, a captivating woman with a resilient mindset and gentle charisma, poised to face off against the king.

Notably, Kang Hee Soo’s cold gaze at King Yi In piques curiosity about the story behind her character. The caption, “When you love them, you wish them to live — when you despise them, you wish them to die,” offers a glimpse into Kang Hee Soo’s undercover mission as a spy who approaches King Yi In secretly for revenge.

“Captivating the King” will premiere on January 21 with Episodes 1 and 2 airing consecutively.

tvN has unveiled two posters for its upcoming historical melodrama Captivating the King, starring Jo Jung Suk and Shin Sae Kyeong.

Jo Jung Suk portrays King Lee In, while Shin Se Kyung takes on the role of Kang Hee Soo, a spy seeking revenge against him.

The posters showcase the striking appearances of Lee In (Jo Jung Suk) and Kang Hee Soo (Shin Sae Kyeong).

Through the veil, the true identity of Lee In and the disguised baduk player, Kang Hee Soo, is shown.

The blurry image of the veiled prince wearing a hat gradually becomes clearer. Whereas, the revealed part of the poster shows Jo Jung Suk as the stern King Lee In, captivating the audience with his piercing gaze and charismatic presence. Wearing a crimson robe, he exudes the charisma of a royal and seems to convey the loneliness and desolation of a king who, despite being in a high position, feels sad and weak.

On the other hand, the blurry image of the noblewoman disguised as a baduk player is shown, presenting Shin Sae Kyeong as the determined woman, Kang Hee Soo. Her captivating charm and gentle charisma portray her as a strong, beautiful woman. Her cold gaze as she looks at Lee In leaves audiences curious about her story.

Shin Se Kyung Is A Genius Go Player Who Disguises Herself As A Man In “Captivating The King”

Dec 26, 2023
by M. Lim

tvN’s upcoming drama “Captivating the King” has shared the first glimpse of Shin Se Kyung in character!

Shin Se Kyung takes on the role of Kang Hee Soo, a spy whose goal is to overthrow the king. Kang Hee Soo is a skilled baduk (go) player who mastered the game by watching her father play when she was young. Disguised as a man, she first meets Prince Yi In by chance and forms a close bond with him through baduk. One day, while playing baduk with Prince Yi In on a day of drizzling rain, Prince Yi In gives Kang Hee Soo the nickname “Kang Mong Woo,” as the name derives from the Korean words for “thick drizzle of rain.”

In the newly released stills, Kang Hee Soo adorns a gat (traditional Korean hat) and sports a blue male attire as she seamlessly portrays the guise of a man. Her elegant features and noble demeanor combine both handsome and beautiful qualities.

Publicly presenting herself as a male baduk player, she fearlessly takes on challenges from other players one after another. Focused on the baduk board, the brilliant Kang Hee Soo swiftly rises to fame as a prodigious baduk player, maintaining an impeccable record of zero losses.

The production team of “Captivating the King” remarked, “We cannot think of anyone other than Shin Se Kyung for the role of Kang Hee Soo. Shin Se Kyung breathes life into the character of the spy Kang Hee Soo, who, with her gentle charisma, will face off against King Yi In. Much like how she subtly infiltrates King Yi In’s heart like a drizzling rain in the drama, viewers will also find themselves captivated by her charm. We ask for your anticipation.”

“Captivating the King” will premiere on January 21 with Episodes 1 and 2 airing consecutively.

Jo Jung-seok and Shin Se-kyung seduce each other in teaser

by Jenzy

The latest teaser for Captivating the King drops us right into the relationship between the mad king Jo Jung-seok (Hospital Playlist 2) and our cross-dressing, baduk-playing spy Shin Se-kyung (Arthdal Chronicles: The Sword of Aramun), leaving us to ask who exactly is seducing who.

The teaser opens on King Lee In (Jo Jung-seok) daydreaming of an encounter he had back when he was a prince playing baduk with a man named Mong-woo (Shin Se-kyung), whom he tenderly calls his “misbehaving brother.” We then cut to them present day — Lee In as a king and “Mong-woo” now back to her original identity Hee-soo — as they think of one of their final encounters. Hee-soo as Mong-woo had given Lee In a small stone to watch over while she left, promising to come back for it by the next rainfall.

We don’t know what went down in their final meeting, but when we cut to our characters in present day, Lee In wastes no time telling Hee-soo what he’s always felt: “Mong-woo, I like you.” Then comes an emotional flurry of scenes from their past as the music swells: them playing baduk, walking together, and goofing off. All to end on the final scene where Hee-soo tells Lee In in the voiceover that she has a wish as she leans in to kiss him.

While we do know their love story will eventually become polluted with revenge, subterfuge, and political scheming, it’s nice to initially ground ourselves in the leads’ chemistry and get an understanding of how things must have been before things soured. I’m also just so excited to see Jo Jung-seok playing an earnest, melodramatic role again as I have been waiting for literal years for him to return to his King 2 Hearts-level pining.

Written by Kim Sun-deok (The Crowned Clown) and directed by Jo Nam-gook (The Good Detective), Captivating the King will premiere January 21 on tvN.
