A game of secrets and spies in tvN’s Captivating the King

by tccolb

The first teaser has landed for tvN’s upcoming fictional sageuk Captivating the King (previously Sejak, the Enchanted), where our title’s king Jo Jung-seok (Hospital Playlist 2) battles baduk and love against our heroine Shin Se-kyung (Arthdal Chronicles: The Sword of Aramun).

Opening on the baduk board, the video begins when Lee In (Jo Jung-seok) was still a prince and had found a friend in a person who called themselves Kang Mong-woo (Shin Se-kyung). Sitting across from each other, an intense Lee In places his tile to begin the baduk match. But as we learn through the teaser, Mong-woo – a.k.a. Kang Hee-soo – isn’t the only one with secrets and a tangled game of deceit was set into motion as well.

The trailer then jumps ahead to the future where we re-meet our newly bearded and smexy hero, who now commands the throne as Joseon’s king. Not to be outdone, Hee-soo dons pretty new garbs as well and enters the palace with a revenge plan to fulfill. However, as the continuing captions and voiceovers reveal, we’re in for a cruel mess of fate as our pair both become more captivated by the other.

With the promos focusing on our two leads thus far, hopefully we’ll soon be seeing the rest of the main cast, which includes Lee Shin-young (CEO-dol Mart) and Park Ye-young (Summer Strike). The sageuk romance also stars Sohn Hyun-joo (The Good Detective 2), Jo Sung-ha (Our Blooming Youth), Jang Young-nam (High Cookie), and Choi Dae-hoon (Curtain Call).

Directed by PD Jo Nam-gook (The Good Detective) with Kim Sun-deok (The Crowned Clown) writing, Captivating the King is slated to air in tvN’s weekend slot, kicking off with Episodes 1 and 2 releasing back-to-back on Sunday, January 21.

Jo Jung Suk and Shin Se Kyung’s upcoming drama “Captivating the King” has unveiled new posters!

Written by Kim Sun Deok of tvN’s “The Crowned Clown,” “Captivating the King” tells the cruel love story between King Yi In (Jo Jung Suk), a miserable king who harbors an emptiness within him despite his high position, and Kang Hee Soo (Shin Se Kyung), whose initial motive of seeking revenge against him transforms into an unexpected attraction.

The newly released first poster captures the evolution of King Yi In and Kang Hee Soo’s relationship, shifting from a fateful attraction to their current state of cautious vigilance.

In the poster, Jo Jung Suk and Shin Se Kyung lock eyes in a picturesque field where cherry blossom petals gracefully dance around them as Prince Yi In and Kang Mong Woo, a woman who disguises herself as a man. Initially meeting while concealing their true identities, the two form a close bond through the game of baduk (Go). The poster highlights the emotional distance between the two characters, portraying a situation where they have no choice but to conceal their affection for each other.

The reverse side of the poster is set against the backdrop of a palace and exudes a darker and more chilling atmosphere. As Yi In now assumes the role of a lonely king and Kang Hee Soo transforms into a determined spy seeking vengeance against him, the palpable tension between them is unmistakable.

Jo Jung-seok is the mad ruler in Captivating the King

by lovepark

Fictional sageuk Captivating the King has dropped two character teasers, showcasing its forlorn king and spy adversary. Taking on the role of King Lee In is Jo Jung-seok (Hospital Playlist 2), and in opposition to him is the mysterious baduk player Kang Hee-soo portrayed by Shin Se-kyung (Arthdal Chronicles: The Sword of Aramun).

Lee In’s teaser opens with a shot of him walking between sheer curtains as the court ministers’ cries ring out against their king. They accuse him of being a spy and question his right to rule as well as his humanity. The camera zooms in on Lee In, and as he pulls back the curtain, he switches from his white attire to his red kingly garbs. With a hardened expression, he asks, “Do you think I am crazy, too?”

The second character teaser starts in a similar fashion with Kang Hee-soo weaving through the same white curtains. In voiceover, Lee In says that a light, foggy rain is called mongwoo, and the scene changes to Hee-soo dressed like a man and running through the rain. Fingers brush against each other over a baduk board, and Lee In tells Hee-soo that it is a nickname he cherishes.

Lee In and Hee-soo sit by the river, and as the sunlight reflects off the water and casts them both in a soft glow, they look happy. However, like the other teaser, the mood shifts. Placing down a baduk stone, Hee-soo’s manly clothes turn into a feminine hanbok, and she offers someone a chance at revenge once the mongwoo falls. Staring into the camera, she says, “When I love you, I wish for you to live, but when I hate you, I wish for you to die.”

Directed by PD Jo Nam-gook (The Good Detective) with scripts by Kim Sun-deok (The Crowned Clown), tvN’s Captivating the King premieres January 21 in the weekend slot with a special back-to-back release of the first two episodes on Sunday.
