Beyond the stories of women who became vassals and the wings of eagle owls, ‘The Tale of a Gumiho 1938’

237228_390516_1121.jpg

As in the sayings, ‘men are wolves, women are foxes’, ‘bear husbands, fox wives’, women are often compared to foxes. ‘Nine-tailed fox’, which naturally refers to a ‘nine-tailed fox’, has been described as a woman for a long time, and as a spirit-bearing monster who covets human liver to become a human and meets death. In this way, the nine-tailed fox in the legend that begins with ‘Once upon a time’ was a magical monster who transformed into a woman to become a human, seduced humans, and ate human liver. Since then, as dramas with melodrama, maternal love, and romance added to the negative image of a nine-tailed fox have appeared, a positive image has gradually been overlaid (<Hometown of the Legend: Gumiho> (2008), <Gumiho: The Tale of a Fox Sister> (2010). , <My Girlfriend is a Gumiho> (2010)). Also, with the appearance of a male gumiho in <The Tale of a Gumiho> (2004), <The Book of Gu Family> (2013), and <Late Cohabitation> (2021), a change appeared in the gender as well. The appearance of was drawn as a positive figure wearing different clothes.

Reflecting on women of the time through vassals

The drama <The Tale of a Gumiho> (tvN), which aired in 2020 with a changed perspective on gumiho, gained popularity by putting a male gumiho at the forefront and capturing the heroic aspect of being a guardian deity protecting the Korean Peninsula through exciting action. Thanks to this success, <The Tale of a Gumiho 1938> (tvN) was aired as the second series. In the previous season, Lee Yeon (played by Lee Dong-wook), a nine-tailed mountain god who met a loved one and met a happy ending, made an emergency landing in 1938 and tries to find his way back to the present day. While the action, pace, and imagination of the genre add to the fun of the film, <Gumiho1938> reminds us of the women of the time who suffered under the shackles of femininity through the presence of a vassal deity depicted as a woman. The film also shows the possibility of another female hero through the character of Ryu Hong-ju (Kim So-yeon), a mountain god whose body is that of an eagle owl.

The drama series "Gumiho" is refreshing in its reimagining of the gumiho, which is one of the four mountain gods of the Korean peninsula, the guardian of the Baekdu Mountain, and a male fox with mysterious powers. It is a different setting that goes beyond the image of Kumiho that we have known before. Furthermore, against the backdrop of the Japanese occupation, the film raises Kumiho's status as a national hero who defends the Korean peninsula against the Japanese who are raping and exploiting the country. In this way, the series shatters stereotypes about gumiho one by one, making the legendary ghost a new hero of today.

<Set in 1938, the Korean peninsula was increasingly exploited by the Japanese, and the drama uses imaginary indigenous deities to illustrate the colonial situation that was plagued by such vicious exploitation. Many indigenous deities are depicted as being kidnapped by Japanese demons, used for experiments, and brutally killed. Japanese demons use the indigenous deities of Joseon for experiments to improve them and send them to the front lines, and in the process, several deities, including the poisonous ghosts (goblins), Chulyungsin (a native deity that guards the Jangdokdae), Cheonhaegun, and Wellsin, are killed, which recalls the atrocities committed by the Japanese at the time. In addition, the indigenous deities of Joseon are depicted as facing a crisis of survival, as their places of residence, such as huts and wells, are gradually disappearing due to modernisation. The film reflects on a tradition that has outlived its usefulness as a folk belief that lives and breathes in the lives of the common people and has become a fictional story of legends.

The birth of a fascinating female hero

The stories of women who died without a grave and became the guardians of their households capture the contradictions of the patriarchal society in which women were expected to obey the patriarchal order while consoling the 'han' they must have suffered. Jo Wang-sin, who blackened women into yacha (monsters) in episode 2, was originally a vassal deity who was pitied as a daughter-in-law who was burned in a stove and made into a god who protects the kitchen. In the drama, not only does he no longer worship himself as a deity, but he also punishes women who want to become beautiful by turning his shack into a beauty salon. Also, in episode 8, a concubine who was killed out of jealousy by the head of the household becomes a god who guards a toilet. In the drama, the vassal god was a vicious concubine who caused harm to humans by throwing filth into the toilet. The vassals in the drama, Jowangsin and Jangsin, were women who had been persecuted by their mothers-in-law, husbands, and heads of households during their lifetimes, and were made vassals by a god who took pity on them. The story of how they became vassals tells us about the unfortunate lives of women at the time, and it has become a faith that comforts women's lamentations as they were unjustly killed and worshipped as gods. But behind the scenes, it also serves as a deterrent to women's resistance to patriarchy. In order to bless the god and his vassals and ward off bad luck, women have to bear another burden: they have to keep their kitchens clean, not speak ill of them, and perform sacrifices to appease the god's anger. This legendary story shows that female vassals played a contradictory role in the patriarchal order, comforting women who were groaning under the patriarchal order, preventing them from rebelling against the patriarchal order, and making them obedient to the patriarchal order by imposing additional duties on them.

237228_390517_1122.jpg

The appeal of Ryu Hong Joo, who introduces herself as "X," is that she's literally a pretty but capable mountain god. In particular, the Western Mountain God, an eagle owl with near-silent flight, is described as the strongest of the mountain gods, capable of derailing moving trains and wielding an incredibly large sword. It's unusual for a female character to be endowed with powers that symbolise masculinity, which leads to a 'strength vs. strength' showdown in episode 11, where she faces off against the most powerful of the Japanese mercenaries, a man named Ogama. Unlike the majority of content that pits men and women against each other, with many scenes of 'man against man' and 'woman against woman', Gumiho 1938 pits Moo-young against Yuki and Hong-joo against Ogama, showing a confrontation that focuses on the characters' abilities rather than their gender. In addition, Ryu Hongju, a three-dimensional character who values love and loyalty and is skilled in the art of fencing, is different from the traditional female heroes who emphasise femininity.

Moving to a different time period, "Gumiho 1938" maintains the rediscovery of Gumiho that season 1 did, but it offers a modern understanding of the old story in that it depicts the hardships suffered by the Korean people during the Japanese occupation, the resistance against it, and the women groaning under the patriarchy, while also showing the birth of an attractive female hero.

Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938: Episodes 11-12 (Final)

by DaebakGrits

https://d263ao8qih4miy.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/TotNT1938_11-12_00.jpg

This finale has everything: body swapping, hypnotism, damsels in distress, necromancy, gun fights, explosives, inspirational quotes, redemption arcs, and boss battles to end all boss battles. In other words, Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938 went out with a bang — literally and figuratively — and it’s going to be hard to say goodbye to these delightfully fun and wacky characters.

EPISODES 11-12

We ended last week’s penultimate episodes with Nyudo swapping his old-man body for Yeon’s much more sleek and spry physique. While the upgrade is obvious from an aesthetics perspective, this also gave Nyudo the opportunity to spy on Hong-joo and Moo-young and wait for an opening to steal the crystal.

At the same time, Yeon learns that there is a fifth Shinigami, and the last thing he wants is for the remaining anime villains to regroup and gain the upper hand while he and his fellow mountain gods are weakened and feuding among themselves. Thinking on his feet, Yeon convinces Yuki and Oogama that it wouldn’t be wise for them to appear before their boss with only one treasure in hand. Nope, instead they should totally try and take out the Joseon gods and steal the crystal so their leader won’t be angry over their lackluster performance.

Yuki and Oogama agree that his plan sounds like a good idea, so they seek out Hong-joo and Moo-young. Naturally, when the two teams converge, a fight ensues. Yuki’s freezing superpower — timed with a surprise attack from Nyudo-in-disguise — quickly gives the Shinigami the upper hand, but when Moo-young reveals his flame abilities, Yuki convinces Nyudo that he should swap Yeon’s body for the one with more fire power.

Yeon, who’d been hiding and biding his time for the perfect moment to reclaim his body, jumps into the smoke just as Nyudo uses his power to swap with Moo-young. Once Yeon is back in the driver’s seat of his own skin, Yeon summons a bolt of lightning and disintegrates Nyudo in an instant. (What, Yeon, you couldn’t conjure more lightning to end Yuki and Oogama, too? Or would that have been too easy?)

Yuki and Oogama scamper off, and the battered and bruised mountain gods take a moment to rest and commiserate, but their fight against the Shinigami isn’t over. There’s still the matter of their pesky leader SATORI (Seo Young-joo), who tries to keep them under his spell — but his illusions are no match for Yeon’s wits. When Yeon realizes that he and his fellow mountain gods are still in the hotel and not, in fact, recuperating at Myoyeongak as Satori’s illusion would have them believe, they exit Satori’s spell and come face-to-face with Satori and the rest of the Shinigami.

Of course, this latest villain has another trick up his sleeve, and quick flashbacks reveal that he’d already hypnotized the mountain gods the previous day when he’d been disguised as a hypnotist’s assistant. At the count of three, he orders Yeon to hand over the magical artifacts and has Moo-young and Hong-joo commence choking each other to death.

Once again, our heroes are in quite the predicament, but — as always — Yeon’s cunning and magical fox abilities come in handy. Lest we forgot from Season 1, Yeon also has the ability to mindf**k people, and while he was trapped in Nyudo’s body, he hypnotized Yuki and Oogama so that they would attack whatever opponent Yeon was facing when he said the magic word three times. On command, Yuki freezes Satori, and Yeon orders Oogama and Yuki to carry Satori up to the hotel’s roof, where they should all jump off together.

Admittedly, I find this turnabout a wee bit convenient, especially since all previous scenes indicated Nyudo retained the powers of whatever body he was possessing. After all, he was able to summon Yeon’s sword, and he wanted to swap bodies with Moo-young to gain his pyrokinetic abilities. So it doesn’t make sense that Yeon would still be able to hypnotize the Shinigami in Nyudo’s body. Whatever, I’ll roll with it. *shrugs*

With the Battle of Bando Hotel behind them, our heroes try to rest up as much as they can before D-day — the day of the eclipse and Eun-ho’s wedding. This includes Rang, who successfully cured Yeo-hee and prevented her from becoming a zombie. But sadly, his little mermaid is not safely out of harm’s way just yet. Kato has finally realized that Yeon is not only powerful but extremely crafty and sharp, meaning throwing a series of goons at Yeon isn’t going to work unless he comes up with an equally clever scheme to back Yeon into a corner. And to do that, Kato needs hostages. (You can probably see where this is going now.)

Poor Yeo-hee is taken by (not dead) Yuki while on a date with Rang, which nearly breaks him, as feelings of being useless and “not good enough” to protect his loved ones resurface. Yeo-hee isn’t the only one in distress, though, because Oogama (also not dead because — let’s be real here — Yeon was pretty dumb to think that jumping off a mere four-story building would kill such strong demons) takes Hong-joo’s eternally loyal puppy YOO JAE-YOO (Han Gun-yoo) hostage, too.

Why does Kato need two hostages? Well, he issues a challenge to Rang and Hong-joo: the first one to deliver the magical artifacts to him will have their loved one returned safely. If Kato actually expects to sow discord and have Rang and Hong-joo to go head-to-head, he is sorely mistaken, because neither Rang nor Hong-joo jump to play his game. However, as a stall tactic to keep the pair distracted and away from his wedding with Eun-ho, it’s fairly effective — especially since Yeon has a curfew that’s less forgiving than Cinderella’s.

Even so, Yeon rallies the troops and concocts a plan that has everyone working together to not only ruin Kato’s wedding (and kill the high-ranking Japanese general in attendance) but to also rescue Yeo-hee and Jae-yoo — with hopefully enough time leftover for him to catch his ride back to the future. It isn’t long before Rang’s gang and Shin-joo’s canine footmen locate our villains’ prison hideout, and so Rang and Hong-joo team up to rescue their loved ones. Meanwhile, Yeon, Eun-ho, and Hong-joo’s girls sneak into Bando Hotel to hide weapons and bombs around the wedding venue.

fec287146d62f66abc5d5a3e6efc09f875ae9c45

Rang and Hong-joo locate Yeo-hee first. She’s safe and sound because Jae-yoo put up a fight and destroyed one of the serum vials that Yuki and Oogama were going to inject into their bloodstreams. Unfortunately, there was still one vial left, and after injecting the serum into Jae-yoo, Oogama tied him to a tree — bait for Hong-joo, who immediately rushes to his rescue and releases him from his bonds.

The serum makes Jae-yoo go crazy and attack Hong-joo, but she refuses to fight back. She just holds him and pats his head lovingly when he bites her shoulder, and the familiar way she comforts him helps him momentarily come to his senses — long enough for him to fatally wound himself in order to avoid attacking her further. Not going to lie, this scene had me near tears, and I’m a bit resentful that their relationship wasn’t featured more prominently in previous episodes.

I don`t know how Lee Rang will fit in the story.

He doesn't, especially after the end of this season when he awakened his powers and believe in himself. His story is completed, in my opinion. The only way they would put him in the next season is might for their father to appear, which means that Lee Rang would be either new born or not born at all.

I agree. And with only 10 episodes, there isn`t much time for a new development. Lee Rang could appear as a cameo in the end of the series (if he is alive), a flashback or in the young form.

Kim So Yeon, the name may ring many bells for makjang fans. Or perhaps her character name Cheon Seo Jin will. A career-defining role in the form of her The Penthouse: War in Life portrayal has followed Korean actress Kim So Yeon, impressing millions of fans domestically and internationally as a villain who will surely be remembered for a long. Since then, she has made a cameo appearance in Taxi Driver 2 and was cast as the leading lady for the new season of the famed fantasy drama Tale of the Nine Tailed.

About Kim So Yeon

The 42-year-old actress is known for her roles in dramas such as All About Eve, Iris, Prosecutor Princess, and more recently The Penthouse: War in Life. She was announced as the new female lead for a prequel of the fantasy drama originally led by Jo Bo Ah much to the surprise of fans. Called ‘Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938’, Kim So Yeon was cast to play the role of Ryu Hong Joo, a mountain deity herself, who is obsessed with Lee Dong Wook’s Lee Yeon and is running a well-known restaurant in the 1930s. The show saw her chase the gumiho all through the end and it was yet another testament to the acting prowess of Kim So Yeon.

Kim So Yeon interview

In an exclusive chat with us, Kim So Yeon spoke about entering the famed world of Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938 as Ryu Hong Joo, her bloodied chemistry with Lee Dong Wook, and how would it be like to manage a restaurant of her own someday.

How did you feel about entering the world of ‘Tale of the Nine Tailed’ which already has such a successful fanbase and expectations from the storyline? Did you feel pressured at all?

Kim So Yeon: As someone who enjoyed the first season, it was a joy to be joining the second season. I accepted the role offer happily without thinking twice because I personally like fantasy. I wanted to challenge myself by delving into the realm of fantasy, as I never know when I will have another opportunity to do so!

Also, since the first season received tremendous love, there was a little bit of pressure that I had to do good, but the atmosphere on set was so great that it all melted down.

The most anticipated bit of the show is your relationship with Lee Dong Wook. What did it look like off-camera on your end? Were you worried about people’s response to a possible new love line for Lee Yeon?

Kim So Yeon: Lee Dong Wook was the mainstay of the set. He was the actor I have always wanted to experience working with. It was truly fun shooting with him.

Unfortunately, we cannot have a love line because Lee Yeon is a married man. (laughs) But we will still show you interesting chemistry through our bloody feud.

1686748944_lee-dong-wook-kim-so-yeon.jpg

As the owner of a restaurant in the show, did you ever think about opening your own restaurant and managing it? We think you’ll be good at it. If so, what would you put on the menu?

Kim So Yeon: I believe a restaurant owner is an interesting job to have, but the real-life Kim So Yeon has no ability to run her own business, so I will be satisfied to be the owner of Myo Yeon Gak in the show.

How did you slip into the role of a lady who is courting someone? Any past experiences which helped you become Ryu Hong Joo?

Kim So Yeon: I was a bit worried at first, but as I read the script, I realized how specific and lively the characters were expressed by our writer, making it less difficult to be Ryu Hong Joo. It was very fun filming the scene where I court Lee Yeon with hilarious lines.

The global audiences’ response to your recent appearances has been majorly positive. How do you feel about receiving so much love?

Kim So Yeon: I believe the opportunities were given to me thanks to all the love that I receive. That is how I got the chance to perform this character. I will work even harder to reciprocate that love!

Actress Woo Hyun Jin revealed that she was a fan of co-star Kim Beom's representative work, 'Boys Over Flowers'. On June 14, Woo Hyun Jin spoke with a news source about the recently ended tvN's series, 'Tale of the Nine-Tailed 1938' she starred in. 'Tale of the Nine-Tailed 1938' is the second season of 2020's 'Tale of the Nine-Tailed' where the main character, a 1000-year-old 'gumiho' (nine-tailed-fox) 'Lee Yeon' (actor Lee Dong Wook) is transported from the current day to the year 1938. Woo Hyun Jin played 'Jang Yeo-hee', a half-human, half-mermaid who falls in love with a half-human, half-'gumiho', 'Lee Rang' (Kim Beom), the brother of 'Lee Yeon' . A newly introduced 'Jang Yeo-hee' character was considered one of the series' standouts in the second season. The character's actor was also a newcomer, having made her debut only a year before. Her strong performance and portrayal of the surreal romance with Kim Beom's character raised the expectation for the actress' next chapter.

The 24-year-old actress shared her experience of working with Kim Beom. Even though they are in the same agency, Woo Hyun Jin says she met the actor for the first time in filming 'Tale of the Nine-Tailed 1938'. "I got so nervous before the first shoot because Kim Beom is such a big star. He was a television celebrity for me.", she said. "I was thinking, 'What should I do?', the whole time. I wasn't sure if I could play the character who is constantly clingy to Kim Beom's 'Lee Rang' while being overwhelmed by his presence.", the actress explained.

Woo Hyun Jin acted in a romance with Kim Beom, who is not only ten years older than her but also an 18-year veteran actor. She noted that it was an honor to work with him, adding that she was a fan of one of his works, KBS' drama, 'Boys Over Flowers'. "I was a big fan of the drama when I was in middle school. It was such a privilege to be working with 'So Yi-jung' (Kim Beom) of 'Boys Over Flowers'." The actress also shared that she made Kim Beom burst into laughter by asking, "Are you an actual 'gumiho'?" "I said that because he is such a younger-looking man.", she explained, "He looks exactly like he did in 'Boys Over Flowers'." "He's so gentle and understanding.", she continued, "He used to say, 'You can do whatever you want.', 'We can wait til you are ready.' It was really comforting."

In 'Tale of the Nine-Tailed 1938', 'Lee Rang' and 'Jang Yeo-hee' went on some unusual but lovely dates. The actress says expressed how much she enjoyed what they had. "'Lee Rang' and 'Jang Yeo-hee' have love that feels like young love between a boy and a girl, and I loved it. People's positive comments about the couple filled my heart with pride. I was rooting for their love as well."

Team Dramabeans: What we’re watching (June 17, 2023)

by DB Staff

So, what are we all watching this week?

missvictrix

Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938: I’m in denial that it’s over. The finale was appropriately and wonderfully outlandish and heartfelt. I loved everything about it, convenient plot devices and all. Like I’ve been saying from the start, the characters were always at the center, and so everything that spun around them was totally fine by me. By the end of the drama I not only loved Lee Dong-wook, Kim Bum, and Kim So-yeon more than ever, but I developed a two-part crush on Moo-young (he was always too warm to be evil) and Jae-yoo, the faithful puppy incarnate. I never say this, but: Season 3, please.

mistyisles

Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938: So many things in the finale didn’t make sense, and I don’t care — this show was a blast from start to finish, I’m glad everyone got their happy endings, and I can’t wait for Season 3. That said, I did have to create my own rationalization for how in the world all the changes in the past didn’t impact the future at all. So until and unless Season 3 tells me otherwise, my interpretation is that the two timelines split off into two separate universes, one where Season 1 happened and one where it wasn’t necessary because Rang and Yeon (and the other mountain gods) stayed friends.

Unit

The Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938: An absolutely crack-tastic watch! Loved every minute of the wild ride, and I’m having massive withdrawal symptoms. I’m tempted to check out the first season for more of the bromance of the fox brothers, but I don’t think I can handle seeing Rang die.

<The Tale of a Nine Tailed Fox 1938> (hereafter referred to as <The Tale of a Nine Tailed>) is only one hour away from the last broadcast. How are you feeling?

It's the last episode! I've been waiting for episode 12, and I cried a lot while reading the script. The writing is really good, so I'm very curious to see how it will turn out.

What scene made you cry so much?
The scene where Jae-yoo (Han Geon-yoo), who has been faithfully by Hong-joo's side, is poisoned by the sap of an earwig and is in danger. He chooses to die so that Hong-joo, who goes to save him, won't be harmed. I also cried a lot when I read the letter that Lee Yeon (Lee Dong-wook) left behind. When I read the letter while looking at Yi-yeon's empty room, I was crying so hard that I had to go back for a second take. When we cut back to the present and Yi-yeon and Hong-joo are about to break up, both Dong-wook and I were wiping our tears.

Hong Joo seems to be obsessed with Yi Yeon - what are the feelings she harbours? Love? Compassion?
For Hong Joo, Chun Moo Young (Ryu Kyung Soo) and Yi Yeon must have been like family to her, and although she ostensibly described them as "mine," having them back in front of her must have lifted the loneliness she felt.

Did you do a live shoot every time?
Yes. That's one of the benefits of pre-production, but on the other hand, it's a 12-episode series, so it's a shame that it's coming to an end so soon compared to the amount of time we spent preparing and filming, because we worked so hard on it over the last year.

The shooting period must have been quite long.

I filmed for 9-10 months. Four to five months after casting was a preparation period. Last year, I was completely immersed in <The Tale of a Gumiho>.

There is a lot of post-production work, so I think the actors who filmed it will be able to enjoy it from the viewer's point of view.

I was surprised. It's my first fantasy. I shoot in front of the blue chroma key, but in the beginning I was like, “Is this right? Am I doing it right?” One day, I looked up NG scenes from the Marvel series on YouTube. Feeling a sense of kinship gave me courage. Once I got used to it, I enjoyed it. When will I ride a wire again and fly in the sky like that?

What scene made you realise the power of technology?
The train fight scene. I was worried that it was going to be a distraction when it was supposed to be a help, so when I saw the post-production additions, the words "Thank you!" just came out of my mouth.

You said that if you get the role, you write the character's autobiography. What kind of narrative did you envision for Hong Joo?
Hong-ju is trained to be a sanshin by a cult and endures a harsh time through friendship, and then returns home to face the bodies of her dead siblings. At the first meeting, I heard the story from the director and writer, and a lot of thoughts went through my head. I thought about ‘What kind of family did I grow up in’, ‘What kind of parents were you in’ and ‘How did you feel when facing the death of your younger siblings’.

What kind of person does Kim So-yeon see in Hong-ju?
She's honest, she's the same person from the front to the back, and she cares about the people around her, which is her biggest charm.

<Ryu Hong-joo was the first character you chose after Cheon Seo-jin in Penthouse. Were there any points where you were worried about their similarities or differences?
They're the same in that they both have intense desires, but they're different. Hong-joo has a love and camaraderie that Cheon Seo-jin doesn't have, and I tried to emphasise that. They also have the commonality of being glamorous on the outside, but since "Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938" is a fantasy and a different era, I kept an open mind when it came to costumes and accessories. I even made a portfolio of all the items and images that I thought would work with Hong-joo, and clipped them together.

Even before the episode aired, the synchronisation was the talk of the town.
When I go on location, I spend about an hour and a half doing my hair, 30 minutes styling my clothes and accessories, and at least an hour doing my make-up. For a single shot, I would prepare for at least two hours, and sometimes three and a half hours. They would also recommend music to match the scene, and I was happy to be able to immerse myself in the character during that time.

What's the song you listen to the most?
'Hongyeon' by Ahn Ye-eun.

That's how you got the line, 'She's pretty, but she's an angry RickRoll'D'.
I love that line because I think it really defines Hong Joo's identity, and I rehearsed it hundreds of times to see how I could do it just like her.

Even after the filming is over, I think I'm still deeply into Hong-joo. What if it hurts a lot during a breakup?

I haven't let it go yet. I have a desk at home where I practice acting, and I still have pictures of Hong Joo and the portfolios I've put together, notes on what to look out for in portraying her and what kind of owl I want to be. I've been trying to organise them lately, but it's been hard. I'll have to try again after watching the final episode today. I loved Hong Joo so much.

Why do you love her so much?
When will I ever meet a character like Hong Joo again? In that sense, I'm grateful for the previous films as time goes on.

<People say things like "second prime" and "third act" about Kim So-yeon after Penthouse. Do you agree?
It's embarrassing, but I'm grateful. I think it gives me strength to overcome when I'm struggling or frustrated. It gives me energy to think, "My efforts are not in vain." It also gives me a sense of challenge when I choose a film.

Kim So-yeon has become the person I associate with the word 'challenge' more than anyone else, because in my memory, she was just a pretty big sister.
In the past, I used to think of challenges as a dichotomy of success and failure, so I was afraid of them, but at some point, I found myself enjoying the process. Once I experienced the satisfaction and lack of regret that comes from enduring the intensity of the process, I wasn't afraid of challenges. I don't know what kind of work I will do in the future, but I want to continue to challenge myself with this mindset. If you are willing to throw yourself into a challenge and learn something in the process, it's not a failure.

As I was preparing for this interview, I came across an artefact. Do you remember the 2012 issue of Allure?
I had short hair and a leopard print outfit, and the film Bonnie and Clyde was the theme.

Exactly! In the manuscript of a senior journalist at that time, there was a line like this: 'An actor who thinks she has to be real to shoot a single picture. Unable to be satisfied with the drafts sent to him, she watched the film two or three times, swallowed it whole as her own, and exhaled the emotion like a breath'.
Awww, thank you so much, I did that then.

How do you manage to be so immersed in any activity at any given moment?
At some point, I stopped having big goals and just thought, 'Let's do the best we can tomorrow' or 'Let's do the best we can in this scene' and just think about today, right now, and I think the quality of my work gets better and I have more time to focus on myself.

What else is there about the 'real Kim So-yeon' that we haven't seen yet?
I want to be the character I'm playing, and even if it's only for a short period of time, I want the character to be forgotten, and that's the real me. The most pleasant comments I get are like, "You're perfect for the role." That's the real me.

How do you spend your days when you're waiting for a film?
Wake up around 7:00 and have a simple breakfast, drive or go to a cafe to drink coffee. I watch movies, dramas, and even read webtoons. Have a truly carefree day. I even fall asleep in my thoughts. Like a daily routine, a certain amount of time is a necessary activity.

What do you think about a lot these days?
I keep thinking about my past works. I think about certain characters or scenes and wish I could do them again. Hong Joo is the same way. I can't sleep for hours when I watch the show. I think about what if I had acted differently, what if I had done it all over again.

Doesn't it hurt when you regret it? Eventually, it became an asset. It doesn't end with regret and regret, but I've experienced many times that there is a next time after overcoming this. It's not painful to think that thinking 'why did I do that?' is studying itself.

Is there any place you want to go to in summer?

I want to stay at home all the time.

Is your house that good? Why? No matter how much I think about it, there is only home. There are times when I wonder if the reason I leave for a trip is because the moment I return home is so enjoyable. Even the moment I go home after spending an intense time in the field feels like a kind of trip.

You're already halfway through the year, how do you like to fill your time?
Nowadays, I have a couple of months to prepare for a shoot, and I'm hoping to find some good work and fill the rest of the year with that. I'm already looking forward to the challenge.

Woo Hyun-jin, "The Tale of a Gumiho Yeo-hee, the first driving force in life... I want to become a lively actor” (Interview)

news-p.v1.20230620.03ac1780eea2443599910

“I am grateful to ‘The Tale of a Gumiho 1938’ and to the viewers for fulfilling my first dream as an actor. I will become a lively actress who will continue to be seen.”Actress Woo Hyun-jin expressed her feelings after finishing ‘The Tale of a Nine Tailed Fox 1938’ with her acting skills that made her debut film doubtful.

Recently, I met Woo Hyun-jin, who finished tvN’s Saturday and Sunday drama ‘The Tale of a Gumiho 1938’ at the electronic newspaper building in Seocho-gu, Seoul.

Woo Hyun-jin is a new actor from Han Ye-jong, born in 1999. In her first official debut film excluding music videos, ‘The Tale of a Nine Tailed Fox 1938’, she played an unusual role as a sub female lead ‘Jang Yeo-hee’.

With the aspect of a lively mermaid lady who goes from being fresh by day to a fascinating singer by night, her natural yet delicate acting of the romance code with 'half-human, half-ho' Lee Rang (played by Kim Bum), which has led to spectacular emotional narratives from freshness, is not like a rookie. It received favorable reviews for making it feel a considerable inner strength.

news-p.v1.20230607.59b306bf0e4a4a6d96764

Woo Hyun-jin talked about future acting plans, retracing the traces of a year as Jang Yeo-hee in The Tale of a Gumiho 1938, along with a cheerful and cheerful appearance that seemed straight out of the play.

- ‘The Tale of a Gumiho 1938’ has come to an end. How do you feel about her debut film receiving praise for its unquestionably good performance?

I am overwhelmed that I was able to fulfil my first dream as an actress with ‘The Tale of a Nine Tailed Fox 1938’.

It's my first film and I was worried that I wouldn't be able to express the character as charmingly as the script, but I'm grateful that the audience seemed to say that I did a good job as Yeo-hee.

-How did you prepare for the character Yeo-hee?

▲ I thought I would be very happy, but when I was casted for the first time, I thought that I should wake up. I had no experience, so I needed a mindset to melt into it. In addition, I prepared a lot to melt into the setting and the atmosphere of the scene as a female actress, such as swimming, horseback riding, and singing.

- As much as the emotional narrative, the styling that encompasses freshness and elegance was quite outstanding. Was there a motif?

▲ The priority was to recognize the two settings of the Japanese colonial period and the mermaid. Along with the period-setting work called Haeeohwa, Hotel Del Luna was referenced for a lovely and bright character.

Along with that, we communicated with the costume and make-up team to prepare. I'm grateful to the staff for the manual work on dresses and dresses, and for making sure that I look just right for the characters and the time period.

-From the underwater gods to the Jang Sanbum and the Shinigami mercenaries, there were a lot of spectacular scenes outside of the emotional narrative. Which was the most challenging?

Is Woo Hyun Jin good at singing in real life?

I think he's pretty good (laughs). In the singing scene, we didn't know that Kay was the OST until it was time to air, and we actually filmed it live on location.

However, I heard that some staff members saw me as a new face on the scene and asked me, "You're good at singing, but were you an idol trainee?

How was the on-set chemistry with senior actors such as Kim Bum, who shared the romance narrative, and Hwang Hee and Lee Dong Wook, who added to the comedy?

I was honoured, but I was also worried that the charm of straightforward Yeo Hee might not come out well. So, I watched the making film of season 1 with Jung Joo-rae and got to know Kim Bum's atmosphere.

But when I finally met him for the first reading, he was really funny and sweet, so my worries were unfounded (laughs). Hwang Hee (Goo Shin Joo) and Lee Dong Wook (Lee Yeon) didn't interact much, but they were fun on set.

Spoiler

news-p.v1.20230526.97e8400e5b964a64a867a

-What did you learn from your official debut?

I realised that I had to do well in the end. I also came to admire the flexible and meticulous breathing of the seniors in the scene where professionals gathered.

I was impressed by the hearts and practical actions of the seniors and the staff, who were cheerful despite being tired, while taking care of many conditions.

-Why did you choose to debut in media acting?

▲ Officially, it is shown for the first time through media acting, but the first start is not like that. If I could act, I did everything from plays to musicals and dramas.

Now that I'm doing it because I want to learn more, I've been told by people around me and in the field that I wish I'd started when I was younger, but I don't mind.

Spoiler

news-p.v1.20230518.997025b1dc54455ca4be1

- Who is your role model as an actor?

▲ It is difficult to pick one person. There are too many people who want to go as a lighthouse, and they themselves are looking for their own way amidst various changes. I think it's best to create my own among the styles of acting and acting wisely.

-What are your goals and future plans as an actor?

I don't want to have a fancy filmography or awards, but I want to leave behind the best things I can right now.

I want to become an actor who can bring life to many people, who can be seen over and over again. My goal is to keep creating acting opportunities.

news-p.v1.20230620.3cbc9376acda4e64961ea

-A word to the viewers

"I have fans that Woo Hyun-jin didn't have before. I feel like I have more endurance and drive in my acting life. I will show you a better version of myself with a grateful heart.

Lim Dae-geun's Column] 'The Tale of a Gumiho 1938', an imaginary history created by subversion and metastasis

The plot of 'Gumiho 1938' is not as simple as it sounds. Lee Yi-yeon (Lee Dong-wook), a contemporary gumiho, travels back in time to 1938 and crash-lands in Joseon during the Japanese occupation. A subversive situation unfolds regarding his identity. First and foremost, he is a man. This is a subversion of Gumiho's gender. The drama subverts the stereotype that Kumiho is a woman. Of course, this is the setting of its predecessor, "Tale of the Nine Tailed," and it is a natural premise for "Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938.

The setting that Lee Yeon, who lived as a modern person, returns to Joseon 85 years ago subverts the context of existence. There are two choices in front of the existence that is transferred to a different context than before. To be an observer or a participant. Delay is a transition from the observer to the participant. The observer status is related to the interpretation of history. How to interpret Joseon during the Japanese colonial era? Observer Lee Yeon goes into history with a flexible and non-rigid attitude. History softens.

Slowly transitioning into a participant in history, Yi-yeon is drawn into the key social dynamics of the time: independence versus empire, colonisation versus decolonisation. Yi-yeon's task of resolving the historical agenda in a clear-cut good-versus-evil narrative is rather simple. It's a confrontation between Joseon and Japanese youkai. The drama does not consider the confrontation between Joseon and Japan as a battle of weakness and strength as we know it. It's a battle of strength against strength. The reason why several youkai with unique talents become "independence fighters" is that we are told that they were fully capable of achieving independence, which was Joseon's task.

The imagination of that ability is recreated through the character of Gumiho, who is inherited from the Joseon tradition, but lives in the modern era in a stately style. The approach that the historical agenda of Korean independence need not be interpreted so seriously and macroscopically is the result of not following the Japanese occupation in its contemporary context, but extracting and combining the contexts that preceded and followed it. 'Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938' treats history in a posthistorical way. Therefore, it becomes a kind of imaginary history.

Although the drama story of soft history eventually boils down to the binary opposition of colony and empire, it is achieved through a quite complex process of internal confrontation and conflict. The conflicts between Lee Rang (Kim Bum) and Yi-yeon, Yi-yeon and Ryu Hong-joo (Kim So-yeon), Ryu Hong-joo and Cheon Moo-young (Ryu Kyung-soo), and Cheon Moo-young and Yi-yeon are the main threads of the storytelling. Only when the microcosmic ties between the mountain gods of Joseon are resolved can the macrocosmic conflicts move forward.

The drama builds its story through a combination of action, romance, fantasy, and mystery. Superheroes, who use transcendent powers to tackle problems, also add to the story. As the genre shifts, history, reality, dreams, mood, style, and nostalgia rotate. The hero's exploits sometimes become the story of an ordinary human being.

Ordinary human stories cannot be made without supporting characters. In "Gumiho 1938," people like Jang Yeo-hee, a mermaid, Koo Shin-joo, a native fox, Sunwoo Eun-ho, a reporter for the Sunwoo Daily, the voodoo master of a demonic group, Yoo Jae-yoo, the bodyguard of Liu Hong-joo, the owner of Myeongyeon-gak, and Woo Rung-gak-shi, the owner of an ombok store, shine. They confirm that history, no matter how tender, is not only about the heroes in long takes and close-ups, but also about the minor characters in short and full shots.

Another interview article of Woo Hyun Jin. She debuted successfully with Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938.

‘The Tale of a Nine Tailed Fox 1938’ Woo Hyun-jin “The level of Kim So-yeon’s script ‘I don’t know’… Admire the professionalism” [Interview ①]

AA1cYBNo.img?w=768&h=1152&m=6&x=175&y=15

“For me, ‘The Tale of a Gumiho 1938’ was an opportunity in many ways. It was because I got a lot of energy just being on the same scene as the great seniors. Looking over her shoulder at her seniors, she learned the way to go as an actress.”

On tvN’s ‘The Tale of a Gumiho 1938’, which ended on the 11th, I met actor Woo Hyun-jin, who plays Jang Yeo-hee, a ‘half-human and half-fish’ who works as an employee at a boutique during the day and an unknown singer at Club Paradise at night.

Jang Yeo-hee, played by Woo Hyun-jin, is infinitely clear and bright, but her true feelings are hard to read. Judging from the words of acting artisans that it is easy for her to show off her acting, but it is difficult to show it in moderation, Woo Hyun-jin, who has just started acting, has quietly completed the difficult task.

She said, “She constantly struggled to fathom Yeo-hee’s inner self. For about a year of preparing and filming the work, I lived as Yeo-hee, not Woo Hyun-jin. Also, since she plays a half-human, half-fish character, she had to perfect the underwater shoot. In addition, there is a setting in the play that Yeon-hee is good at singing, horseback riding, and even action, so I thought I shouldn't show any gaps. When she heard that there was an underwater shoot, she almost lived in the pool (laughs).”

Woo Hyun-jin is a rookie actor who debuted with 'The Tale of a Gumiho 1938'. Besides appearing in two music videos, this is the first time she has taken on a positive role. It would be a lie if I said I didn't feel the burden of having a sub-star in his debut film. However, the burden made actor Woo Hyun-jin stronger.

AA1cYutv.img?w=768&h=1151&m=6&x=181&y=20

She said, “When I passed the audition, I repeated the words, ‘You must do well unconditionally. burden? Of course there was. However, I had a strong thought that I should set aside the burden and get my mind straight. She came into the work with the mindset that she would play Yeo-hee only as much as it was expressed in the scenario. I think I was the most nervous when I acted in a place where seniors and drama officials gathered during the first reading. But after the reading, the writer said, ‘You weren’t scared’. Those words gave me a lot of strength.”

In the play, Woo Hyun-jin formed a heartfelt love line with actor Kim Beom, who played the role of 'half-human, half-fox' Lee Rang. In particular, the underwater kissing scene between Lee Rang and Yeo-hee received a lot of attention from viewers, to the extent that it was chosen as one of the best scenes in the drama.

AA1cYQyP.img?w=768&h=1152&m=6&x=88&y=183

“I was very worried at first. But Kim Bum sunbaenim is ‘Rang’ himself, so I was immersed right away. On the set, Kim Beom-sunbaenim waited for me so that I could unfold the acting I had prepared to my heart's content, rather than giving advice as a senior. Yeo-hee is a character for and by Lee Rang. It is important to express Yeo-hee well, but I had a mission to make Lee Rang stand out more. I was able to act with no regrets left thanks to senior Kim Beom waiting for me.”

For Woo Hyun-jin, who was new to everything, the scene of ‘The Tale of a Gumiho 1938’ was the perfect place to learn. The experience of acting on an equal footing with senior actors who lead the play, such as Lee Dong-wook and Kim So-yeon, as well as the staff who are immersed in the work, and watching their performance was as valuable as standing in front of the camera.

“Senior Kim So-yeon’s script is at the level of ‘Kkumji’. Above the passages and lines, the contents of the senior’s research are densely written. She was able to recognize at once why the sunbaenim was praised for all of her works. Not only that, senior Soyeon doesn't stop rehearsing until right before filming begins. She is always a practicing person. In the meantime, I was moved by the delicacy of taking care of the staff. I learned how to act and what attitude to take on set.”

‘The Tale of a Gumiho 1938’ Hyunjin Woo “I got a fan… The autograph is still” [Interview ②]

AA1d1v3D.img?w=768&h=1192&m=6&x=101&y=29

[TV Report = Reporter Kim Yeon-joo] A face with a shy smile, intelligent eyes. Rookie actress Woo Hyun-jin's first impression of her was clear and bright.

We talked about Woo Hyun-jin, who debuted through tvN's 'The Tale of a Gumiho 1938', and the role he played, Jang Yeo-hee. Jang Yeo-hee is a 'half-human and half-fish' who works as a clothing store employee during the day and as an unknown singer at Club Paradise at night.

Woo Hyun-jin, who I met after the drama ended, had a lingering memory for his first work, ‘The Tale of a Gumiho 1938’, which will be engraved in his filmography. In the play, Jang Yeo-hee is a character whose outer appearance and inner strength stand out. Woo Hyun-jin expressed his special affection for Jang Yeo-hee, who he had been exploring for about a year, saying that she resembled her a lot.

“I read the scenario and thought, ‘There are a lot of similarities to me,’” she said. I thought that if I were in the same situation as Yeo-hee, she would make the same decisions and choices as Yeo-hee. While studying the character of Yeo-hee, she wanted to act so that the similarities between her and me were reflected in the character. Maybe that's why she regrets breaking up with Yeo-hee, but since she opened the door for the first time with a character with many similarities to me, I'm looking forward to meeting better works and characters in the future."

Woo Hyun-jin got the opportunity to appear in Season 2 ‘The Tale of a Gumiho 1938’, which was followed by the popularity of ‘The Tale of a Gumiho’ in 2020, but she said she did not tell her acquaintances about the appearance. Rumor has it that even her parents did not know that she was appearing in a drama.

“I think it was because I’m not usually happy with my personality. Rather than being happy with the fact that she was appearing in a drama, she wanted to do well in this process. After the broadcast started, some acquaintances contacted me saying that they were wondering if it was me or not. And when my parents belatedly announced that I was appearing in ‘The Tale of a Nine Tailed Fox 1938’, they said they thought of me as an extra. But she said she was surprised that it took up more weight than she thought. (Laughs)”

AA1cYuSl.img?w=768&h=1152&m=6

‘구미호뎐1938’ 우현진 “팬 생겼다…사인은 아직” [인터뷰②]

Woo Hyun-jin clearly remembers the first day when the scene she had drawn countless times in her head unfolded before her eyes. The busy time at the scene made Woo Hyun-jin's mind clearer.

“When she first experienced the field, she learned that she had to do her part,” she says. It means that no matter how good the site or meeting the staff is, my role is my own. If one person doesn't make an effort, everyone's hard work could be in vain. I was surprised and moved by the fact that so many people work hard for one work. She will keep this heart for a long time”

Woo Hyun-jin faced a big change when she appeared in her ‘The Tale of a Nine Tailed Fox 1938’. she has a fan He fell in love with the ‘harmless love’ expressed by fans these days. When asked about his fans, Woo Hyun-jin's big eyes sparkled even more.

“It was created an account called ‘Forever Hyunjin’ on a social network service. It is said that the account was created voluntarily by fans. It was amazing. I was impressed with the sincerity of reading and scrapping articles with my name mentioned faster than I did. I've been thinking about what it's like to love someone without any purpose, but I'm still not quite sure. If I get a chance, I want to have a samgyeopsal party with my fans. I will try to become a person worthy of the love you send me.”

Woo Hyun-jin's biggest concern after confirming the love of the fans is the 'sign'. She dreamed of becoming an actor for a long time, but these days she feels the need for an autograph that she had never thought about before.

"I'm narrowing it down to four candidates. Recently, I was asked to sign an autograph at a restaurant and came out with three names on it. I was so apologetic that I promised to 'come back and do it again the next time I'm asked to sign an autograph,' and I even got a business card for the restaurant. I'm going to keep that promise."
