Lee Dong-wook There is no romance... The reason why season 2 of 'The Tale of a Nine Tailed Fox 1938' is more fun

0006832526_001_20230527060101412.jpg?typ

(Seoul=News 1) Reporter Jang Ah-reum = Season 2 of tvN's Saturday and Sunday drama 'The Tale of a Gumiho 1938' (script Han Woo-ri/director Kang Shin-hyo and Jo Nam-hyung) is attracting attention as more interesting development than season 1. The 12-episode series 'The Tale of a Gumiho 1938', first broadcast on the 6th of this month, is a K-fantasy action action drama about a gumiho who made an emergency landing in the chaotic era of 1938 to return to the modern age. It is a sequel to 'The Tale of a Nine Tailed Fox', which ended with its own highest viewership rating of 5.8% in December 2020 (hereinafter, based on Nielsen Korea's nationwide paid households). It depicts a story that takes place while making an emergency landing during the period of strength.

'The Tale of a Gumiho', which aired earlier, gained popularity with Lee Yeon's heartbreaking romance. Yiyeon, a nine-tailed fox who says "a fox never abandons a pair it has once formed," was once a mountain god who protected the Baekdudaegan Mountains, but waited for 600 years for the reincarnation of Ah-eum (Jo Bo-ah), her first love and human, who disturbed the present world at the Immigration Office in the afterlife. He continued his duties as a public servant to catch the monsters. Season 1 had a happy ending, reuniting with Ah-eum, who was reincarnated as broadcasting station PD Nam Ji-ah, overcoming all kinds of adversity, and fulfilling her longing for love and her wish to become a human being.

0006832526_002_20230527060101475.jpg?typ

The main narrative of Season 2 is the story that takes place when Lee Yeon makes an emergency landing in Gyeongseong in 1938 to retrieve the guardian stone of Samdocheon. It was predicted early that there would be no romance between Lee Yeon in Season 2 as it was made with Nam Jia and fateful love, but the story continues to be more interesting than expected with a richer story than Season 1. Season 1 depicts the reunion with younger brother Rang (Kim Bum), who sacrificed himself to revive his older brother Lee Yeon, as well as Ryu Hong-ju (Kim So-yeon) and Cheon Moo-yeong (Ryu Gyeong-soo), who were friends from the mountain god days, and the oppression of Japanese imperialism and independence activists. It also contains the tragedy of the times, including their activities.

As times have changed, the action and sights of gumiho have become more diverse. 'The Tale of a Nine Tailed Fox 1938' opens the door with spectacular action to subdue the Japanese army at once after Lee Yeon's crash landing, and expands the genre to Western action with spectacular long-gun action reminiscent of the movie 'The Good, the Bad, and the Weird'. The uncompromising confrontation of mountain gods, such as the train action scene with Ryu Hong-ju, the main body of which is an eagle owl, and the chase scene with Cheon Moo-young, a tiger from Baekdu Mountain, who hid his identity in a red and white mask, were also highlights of 'The Tale of a Nine-Tailed Fox 1938'. In addition, episodes with monsters such as Dongbangsak and Saetani and indigenous gods such as Jowangsin and Eopsin showed cleverness using oriental tales.

What stands out above all is the acting skills of the actors who embody this fantasy world. Lee Dong-wook, as Lee Yeon himself, expressed more vivid visuals and more colorful characters than Season 1. There is no romance that thrilled viewers, but it stands out that it shows clear chemistry with all the characters in the relationship centered on Lee Yeon. As he goes back to the future, he adds charm to the character with his flexible acting, which ranges from fantasy to comedy, from the obnoxious meddling with his brother's romance because he's worried about being left without confidence, to the delightful chemistry with his right-hand man Gu Shin-joo (played by Hwang Hee). Ryu Hong-ju, who loves him unrequitedly, and Cheon Moo-young, who has a crush on her, and their love triangle and complex friendship, filled the drama with her flawless performance.

In particular, the reason why 'The Tale of a Nine Tailed Fox 1938' is more attractive is that a confrontation with Japanese monsters is predicted in the future. Ryuhei Kato (played by Do-kwon Ha), director of the police department of the Japanese Government-General of Korea, and Akira Saito (played by Ji-ho Lim), a security officer of the police department, are adding to the tension as characters who threaten not only the Koreans but also Lee Yeon. The year 1938 was when Yiyeon fell in love with opium after losing Aeum. As Yiyeon, who came from the future, faced the tragedy of the times and the relationship she had not been able to look back on because of love at the time, in the process, she faced the monsters who turned into Japanese soldiers. Confrontation is inevitable. Ryuhei Kato's sister-in-law and journalist Seonwoo Eun-ho (played by Kim Yong-ji) is also secretly involved in the independence army, so it is expected that the narrative related to her anti-Japanese movement will be heavily included.

'The Tale of a Nine Tailed 1938' is a well-made K-fantasy action film that shows off the synergy of directing, script, and acting. From the dramatic narrative to the era and action, excellent directing skills played a part. It is a drama that melts monsters in indigenous folklore, and it is also meaningful that it entered the top 10 (according to global OTT viewing ranking aggregation site FlixPatrol) in the Amazon Prime Video TV show category (including English/non-English content) in 19 countries around the world.

In Korea, episode 2 broke its own highest rating of 7.1%, and episode 6, the most recent broadcast, achieved 6.9%. Unlike season 1, which was a Wednesday-Thursday drama, the fact that it was aired on Saturdays and Sundays also contributed to the rise in viewership ratings, but the favorable reviews that it was more interesting and more complete than the previous season made 'The Tale of a Gumiho 1938' a more valuable achievement. 'The Tale of a Gumiho 1938' will end on June 11th.

‘Tale Of The Nine Tailed 1938’ Episode 6 Recap & Ending, Explained: Where Are Lee Yeon And Moo Young?

May 22, 2023

Tale-Of-The-Nine-Tailed-1938-Episode-6-R

Whoever wrote Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938 is giving us exactly what we want. It started out with fanservice, and when the joy of that was on the brink of wearing off, they started making meaningful strides in the story. In that spirit, here is the detailed recap and ending of Episode 6.

We like Ryu Hong Joo, especially the way she simplifies things to plan her next move. It was awesome how she threw a sword at Yeon and Moo Young as they were fighting, simply because she knew that Moo Young’s blood could revive Yeon. Apparently, his blood is very rare and comes across only once every few centuries. Moo Young saves Yeon, which was unexpected since we don’t understand why he met with him, to begin with. Episode 6 of Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938 showed Moo Young in a different light than what we have gotten used to. In this episode, he really came across as sad and not in control of what was happening around him. In Episode 5, the God of the Five Paths had met him. We discover why in this episode. The God gives Moo Young a red pouch and asks him to place it somewhere in Myoyeonguk. The pouch is an invitation for a particular being that Moo Young needs to catch. Since the being is extremely powerful, Moo Young says that he will ensure it is caught even if he is not the one to do it. This entire exercise will ensure that Moo Young gets his complete body back.

When Moo Young met Yeon, the latter attacked him because he believed that he was the masked man. Though Yeon was right, his suspicion was based on the fact that he had watched Moo Young die and believed that the person in front of him was an imposter. The next morning, when Yeon wakes up all healed, he knows that the person is indeed Moo Young and his healing blood is proof. Ryu Hong Joo demands that they go out and have fun that day, just like they used to in old times. Ryu Hong Joo gets what she wants, though there are some underlying tensions among the friends. Moo Young is enjoying a taste of his past, but he is a man on a mission to harm Yeon. As for Yeon, he is skeptical as to what is going on, but he has pushed aside his doubts for the time being.

Concerning other affairs, it is safe to say that Rang has started caring for the mermaid. She still has some wishes to get through, but Rang doesn’t think of it as an obligation anymore and is genuinely enjoying her company. Meanwhile, Shin Joo has joined the Korean resistance movement with Ginko, and he finds that Taluipa’s husband and the Water Snail Bride are also a part of it as their patriotic duty. Taluipa doesn’t approve of it since she believes that Korea would be fine either way and that gods should not get involved in the affairs of humans.

Back in Myoyeonguk, Hong Joo has put the word out that she is hiring more gisaengs. The magical being arrives hidden amongst the six candidates. The women start getting hints that something is not right, especially Juk Hyang. But before anything can be done or understood, Ginkgo Tawara ends up missing. She was playing the “corners game” with the other gisaengs, and in the process, they accidentally ended up inviting the ghost amongst them, which kidnapped Ginko. When Hong Joo learns of this, she is furious, and the three friends decide to play the game among themselves to understand the ghost they are dealing with. But this time, Hong Joo gets kidnapped. The fact that someone as powerful as her was taken away means that they are not dealing with an ordinary ghost but with someone very powerful.

In modern times, Shin Joo has made a career as a vet, talking to animals. That skill is useful even in 1938. He finds a cat lurking outside, and it tells them that the magical being was Jang San Beom. We understand that he is one of the most menacing figures in the underworld and kidnaps women to be his wives. There is one known survivor of his, and she tells the brothers that she escaped by following a cat. Yeon and Moo Young must now plan their rescue mission, and the cat is the key to their safe return. Honestly, Moo Young never wanted things to turn out this way. He always wanted Hong Joo to be safe, but Jang San Beom didn’t care about that. He only accepts the invitation and then does whatever he pleases. Yeon already suspects that Moo Young might have something to do with it all since Jang San Beom came to Myoyeonguk at the same time as him and, while playing the corners’ game, Moo Young insisted that Hong Joo not be a participant. Yet, Yeon decides to take a chance and start the rescue mission with him for the sake of their old friendship and, if nothing else, to find out what he wants. Yeon and Moo Young set off but find themselves in the Joseon era, with completely empty streets. At the end of Episode 6 of Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938, when Yeon and Moo Young enter one of the rooms, a mysterious gas knocks them down, and when they wake up, they find themselves on the set of a show titled Jang San Beom’s Bride. It looks like the being is playing with them by shuffling them through worlds, and we believe that it is going to be a time for revelations for the two friends moving forward on this journey.

Final Thoughts

Episode 6 was undoubtedly the better episode to come out this week, and it moved the story forward in a meaningful way. There is a lot to uncover about the three friends’ past, but if our suspicions are right, then the real villain is someone else entirely. Maybe the later episodes will tell us who it is.

‘Tale of the Nine Tailed 1938’ review: a foxy, funny and campy delight

16th May 2023
lee-dong-wook-tale-of-the-nine-tailed-19

Our titular gumiho is sent back in time to vanquish more supernatural evil in this absurdly fun second season

Tale of the Nine Tailed became one of 2020’s biggest K-dramas thanks to its engaging blend of fantasy, action, romance, comedy and horror. Its excellent first season told the story of a gumiho (nine-tailed fox) called Lee Yeon (Lee Dong-wook) who renounced his duties as a mountain deity for the love of a human woman. Centuries after her tragic death, she’s reincarnated in the modern world, allowing Yeon to mend his broken heart. Through many trials and tribulations, Yeon reconnects with his soulmate, saves the world and reconciles with his anti-hero half-brother Lee Rang (Kim Bum).

Season one gave viewers a beautifully bittersweet ending, with Yeon sacrificing himself to defeat an evil serpent demon – only for ex-villain Rang to offer up his own life in exchange for Yeon to be reborn as a human. It completed a compelling redemption arc for Rang, and allowed Yeon to spend a normal, mortal lifetime with his beloved. The climax was so perfect that one could argue the show doesn’t need a second season. Nevertheless, news of the series’ return was widely celebrated by fans (as evidenced by 1938’s series record-breaking ratings). But it does beg the question, where does season two go from here?

Wisely, writer Han Woo-ri and directors Kang Shin-hyo and Jo Nam-hyung have totally changed the status quo for this sequel by offering a fresh setting and different stakes, while retaining (and accentuating) the elements of season one that made the show so compulsively watchable – namely the exciting action alongside Yeon and Rang’s heartwarming bromance. Season two instantly plunges viewers into the fray with a confused Yeon being surrounded by Japanese soldiers in 1938 Joseon. The action then flashes back to explain how the handsome gumiho got his powers back, and why he’s stuck in this time travel predicament.

As it turns out, Taluipa (Kim Jung-nan), the administrator of the Afterlife, still needs Yeon to hunt mythical creatures that are hurting humanity. To that end, he’s tasked with finding a mysterious supernatural being in a Red-White Mask (Itaewon Class’ Ryu Kyung-soo) that has stolen the Samdocheon Guardian Stone, a gem that maintains the barrier between the living and the dead. When Red-White Mask flees through a portal into the past, Yeon and his trusty right-hand fox Koo Shin-joo (Hwang Hee) pursue. Unfortunately for the foxes, this means they’re stuck in 1938, unable to return to their respective loves until they can recover the Stone.

Besides that throughline quest, their sudden appearance in the past creates a whole host of complications. They have to contend with oppressive Japanese colonisers wreaking havoc in their homeland, a myriad of demons and deities (including foreign ones that have travelled with the invaders) getting in their way, and even a stalkery mountain god named Ryu Hong-joo (The Penthouse’s Kim So-yeon) who is romantically obsessed with Yeon. That’s not even counting Yeon’s inevitable encounter with the past version of his half-brother Rang. At this point in time, Rang still hates Yeon for abandoning him, and is still a baddie leading a cadre of bandits.

If Tale of the Nine Tailed is most easily comparable to Thor (fallen god falls for a mortal, has a love-hate relationship with a mischievous and resentful half-brother), 1938 is certainly more in-line with Taika Waititi’s Thor: Ragnarok. Season two revamps the franchise by leaning into what makes it fun and funny, just packed with more self-aware comedy poking fun at season one’s dramatic tropes. Undoubtedly, the series’ most hilarious moment comes early on in this second season when Yeon runs into his past self and is comically disgusted by how annoyingly broody and lovelorn he was.

In fact, season two dumps the overplayed star-crossed romance angle altogether to focus on what fans truly care about: Yeon and Rang’s squabbling bromance as they go on various adventures. Buoyed by an increased emphasis on cool action sequences – with gun fights, hand-to-hand combat, and deity-on-deity superpowered battles aplenty – 1938 offers a refreshingly different tone to its more serious first season. Lighter, sillier, breezier and brimming with campy delight, season two slyly remixes an already successful formula into an even more enjoyable package.

In the 7th episode of tvN’s Saturday and Sunday drama ‘Tale of a Gumiho 1938’ aired on the 27th (written by Han Woo-ri/directed by Kang Shin-hyo and Jo Nam-hyung), Lee Rang (played by Kim Beom) guarded the way for Lee Yeon (played by Lee Dong-wook) to return.

Taluipa said that Lee Yeon entered the world of Jang San-beom and Lee Rang opened the way to the silk thread, saying, “They will try to come over. This is dangerous,” she said. At the same time, Lee Rang received a call from Gu Shin-ju. Gu Shin-joo said, “Please put the blood of Rang-nim on the silk thread.”

As Lee Rang stained the silk thread with blood, Gu Shin-joo's voice changed and said, "Then, the preparations are now complete. Ready to go that way,” he said. Lee Rang was shocked and said, “Isn’t that the old god?”

Taluipa and Hyun Ui-ong (played by Ahn Gil-gang) worried about Lee Rang and Lee Yeon, saying, “Getting blood on the silk thread is like inviting them in.” (Photo=tvN ‘The Tale of a Gumiho 1938’ captured)

On this day, when Jang San-beom was discovered, he changed into Ryu Hong-ju (Kim So-yeon) and said, “If you can save this woman, try to find it. I am the god here, not you.”

Cheon Moo-young, who said that within an hour she must find Ryu Hong-ju, said that Jang San-beom steals her memories, and to Yi-yeon, who asks why Du-du-ri didn't work, “Well. Is it because it is not the main body?” he said.

news-p.v1.20230527.296a0641f45d46199e9ce

At this point, the men who approached, asking, "Are you the Sanshin gang?" made way for Yi-yeon, who asked who they were, and Kim Doo-han (Ahn Jae-mo) appeared.

Yi-yeon said, "No, Ahn Jae-mo, you must be crazy," and Kim Doo-han said, "Hit me," and was surrounded by men.

Lee Yi-yeon and Chun Moo-young found themselves in a fight with Kim Doo-han's group and quickly began to overpower them.

Watching the scene, Kim Doo Han said, "Both of you are terrible. This fight is already won by me. I've already read your moves," and Chun Moo-young rushed out to challenge him.

After getting hit by Kim Doo-han, Lee Yeon said, "Why are you so good at fighting?" and charged at Chun Moo-young again, but was ultimately defeated.

Well, the stakes are already high, and Hong-jo’s disappearance will make it more interesting. Are you ready to know where the goddess is now? Then, keep reading.

The preview of the seventh episode hints at turbulence in Yeon’s life. Well, in the closing moment, Yeon and Moo-Yeong seemed stuck in Gwanghwamun in the Joseon Dynasty. There a bunch of women killed them, only to realize it was a filming set. Soon after learning they traveled back in time, Yeon would focus on his next journey. In Tale Of The Nine-Tailed Season 2 Episode 7, Yeon and Moo-Yeong will search for Jang San-beom. They need to find the person at any cost. During this process, they will meet many men who will charge them. So before finding the answers, Yeon and Moo-Yeong must settle the situation. It shortly turns out that they are trapped in frustrating memory.

Tale-of-the-Nine-Tailed-precap.jpg

It brings more pain to them, leading the duo to be again involved in sword combat. Well, once again, Moo-Yeong will attack Yeon, leaving the latter surprised. However, this time, Hoon-jo won’t be there to separate them. But what’s more surprising is she’s kidnapped, and they need to find her whereabouts. That means she is also trapped in the same timeline and will soon become the bride of the Jang San-beom. So they need to hurry up before they lose Hong-jo forever. Rang will find himself in an unfamiliar place, trapped with assassins elsewhere. Can he survive this time? Will Yeon help save him?

The previous episode began with the most anticipated reunion between Moo-Yeong and Yeon. As soon as they met, they exchanged blows and indulged in a fight, much to Hong-jo’s surprise. Well, she had no clue about the mysterious rivalry between the two. In fact, a flashback of the trio’s childhood revealed that they were inseparable back then. Thus it made things more complicated why Yeon and Moo-Yeong wanted to end each other’s life. However, Hong-jo summoned a mystical Mountain God sword to stop this mess and charged straight at the pair, forcing them to stop their fight.

Hong-Joo ousted Yeon while taking the sword out of him. While he spat blood, the former admitted that he killed Moo-Yeong’s elder brother on the day the Four Mountain Gods died. However, he quipped that he didn’t regret killing the man before passing out. Meanwhile, Rang was having some good times with Yeo-hee. She spent a perfect date where she promised to protect him. On the other hand, Shin-joo joined Eun-ho, and he appeared surprised after seeing familiar faces like Hyun Ui-ong.

However, Moo-Yeong helped revived him and told Hong-Joo that he wanted to use Yeon to alter the past. But the surprising part wasn’t revealed to them- he joined the King Of Five Paths, the God from the Underworld, and was up to something.

Episode 7

Jang San Beom was not Mu Young`s brother like I guessed. His brother appeared in the episode but he had a small role and we didn`t elucidate the whole mystery. We found out that just that Lee Yeon saved Mu young`s life because his brother want to kill him. I understand that Mu Young wanted to think that his brother would not have killed him (he was too soft and naive) but Lee Yeon did the right thing. He saved his friend`s life. I hope Mu young gives up his spite. Come on.... Move on.
But the other guess that Mu Young came back to 1938 for Hong Joo was right. I always suspected that and he said it.
The writer likes to be ambiguous and not let the whole mystery to be resolve too early. Ok but I would not mind to know more.
Mu Young said to Hong Joo when she was under the demon`s spell: "I came for you. I `m alive because of you , Hong Joo". But it is not clear why..... Damn... It could be how I initial thought that he came to 1938 to save Hong Joo. He is alive because someone freed him for him to go to the past to saved her. Or she was the one who actually freed him (I don`t know how she has the power in 2020!) Still number one assumtion is more plausible. We`ll see.

Mu Young whispered to lee Rang that he sacrifised his life in 2020 to save his brother.  I think I like that Lee Rang will have some dilemma. Not everything is allright between brothers. Their relationship is better, the love is there but the hurt and insecurities are still there too. They need tries to test their bond. Who doesn`t kill you make you stronger. Lee Rang has to grow up emotionally and I like his arc.
I am still waiting when the three friends will fight Kato. Maybe Lee rang will be there too. This moment will come.

I love those scene. I want to see more scenes between Hong Joo and her girls.

Mu young had parts of his body a stone. I think he knows who revive him because he has a clear mission. If he doesn`t know then, the one who has freed him knew very well what he will do. It is someone who knows the mountains gods very well and anticipated all the moves. Maybe Taluipa herself or her husband. Who else has the powers?

No one can beat this crazy woman

That was hilarious.:w00t: Go, Hong joo! Lee yeon, Lee Rang and Shin joo making kimchi. I guess Hong joo reminded Lee Yeon that he is living  at Myoyeongak for free (when he refused to work and she took the notebook) and Lee Yeon wanted to avoid work by saying they are friends.
