The novel "Pachinko," written by Korean-American author Min Jin Lee (born 1968), was published in 2017 and selected as the "Book of the Year" by USA Today and the BBC in the UK, and was also nominated for the All-American Book Award.

In Korea, a translation (translated by Lee Mi-jung) was published by Literary History in 2018, and as the number of sales has gradually increased this year, it has remained at the top of the bestseller charts overseas for more than a month in a row.

"Pachinko" is showing a backsliding phenomenon in which its best-selling ranking rises over time as Lee Min-jin is invited in lectures at MIT University in the U.S., Apple TV+ produced a drama adaptation in eight episodes, and cast popular actors Yoon Yeo-jung and Lee Min-ho.

The novel "Pachinko" is a realistic novel about four generations of the main character Soon-ja (Seon-ja) from Yeongdo, Busan, living as Korean-Japanese in Osaka, Japan, from Japanese colonial era to Hyundai.

Author Lee Min-jin was born in Seoul and moved to the U.S. with her parents at the age of seven to grow up in Queens, New York. After majoring in history at Yale University, she worked as a lawyer at Georgetown University Law School, and moved to work as a writer for health reasons, releasing her debut novel "Free Food for Millionaires" in 2007, becoming a prominent writer in American society.

Since 2007, she has spent four years living in Tokyo with her Japanese-American husband, interviewing numerous Korean-Japanese people for writing.

Thanks to the novel "Pachinko," the author earned the nickname "The Second Jane Austen" and was appointed as a professor at Amherst College, the second-largest U.S. in the field of humanities and arts.

The novel "Pachinko" has been translated and read in 27 countries.

Lee Min Ho surprises with a new characterization in Pachinko's filming

Videos and photos of actor Lee Min Ho heading to the filming set for the Pachinko series show him with a new look that prompted his followers to formulate theories about his character.

Once the South Korean star Lee Min Ho joined the cast of Pachinko that is filming in locations in the city of Vancouver in Canada, the local fans of the actor in that country do not rest looking for any opportunity to see the artist even if it is just for a few seconds.

Recently, Pachinko's production prohibited the public in the vicinity of the recording site from taking photos and videos of the artists as they made their way to the set. That didn't stop Lee Min Ho's fans from capturing some images and videos of the artist.

At first, Lee Min Ho was captured by his local fans wearing a costume corresponding to the description of his character, Hansu, as a mysterious and wealthy merchant with criminal ties, wearing a formal suit, hat, and carefully combed hair.

However, recent photos from Pachinko's set show a total change from said image. The star is now seen wearing what appears to be a simple traditional outfit with his hair pulled down.

Among the speculations about Lee Min Ho's character with this new appearance is that it could be Pachinko's narrative about the past, when Hansu was younger and poorer before connecting with the Japanese criminal organization known as Yakuza.

Another theory, although unlikely, is that even Lee Min Ho could also have a double role playing Noa, the son of Hansu and Sunja, since the production has not yet revealed which actor will take this role in the series.

The Apple TV + drama series, is based on the successful novel Pachinko by the Korean American writer Min Jin Lee, with record sales in the United States and a finalist in the National Book Award 2017, with the participation of Lee Min Ho, Jin Ha, Anna Sawai, Kim Min Ha, Soji Arai, and Kaho Minami, among other acting stars.

Pachinko recounts in eight episodes the fortunes and misadventures of four generations of a Korean migrant family that begins with Sunja (Kim Min Ah), on a journey through her family's story told in various languages.

The narrative begins with the illicit romance of Sunja and Hansu ( Lee Min Ho ) and transforms into a dramatic saga that travels from Korea to Japan and then to the United States, dominated by universal themes such as war, peace, love, loss, triumph and accounts settled.

He actually auditioned for the role—his first time in 10 years!

Hallyu superstar and the king of ~my~ heart Lee Min Ho is filming a major project in Canada right now, Pachinko. The 33-year-old actor has been based in Vancouver since the last week of February and was already spotted by fans on set. The series is arguably Min Ho's biggest global project and is already highly-anticipated even without a release date yet!

Curious to know more Pachinko? Here's what we know so far about Lee Min Ho's global series:

What is Pachinko's plot?

Pachinko is actually an adaptation of Korean American writer Min Jin Lee's best-selling novel of the same name and tells the story of a Korean family across four generations—migrating from Korea to Japan to America. Pachinko is described to be a "sweeping saga of an exceptional family in exile from its homeland and caught in the indifferent arc of history. Through desperate struggles and hard-won triumphs, its members are bound together by deep roots as they face enduring questions of faith, family, and identity."

Who is in the cast of Pachinko?

Lee Min Ho as Hansu, "a rich and powerful merchant with ties to organized crime."

Fun fact: Lee Min Ho actually had to audition for this role—and it was his first audition in around 10 years. Telling GQ Korea, he said, "It's been about a decade since I auditioned, but the situation has changed from then. I thought it would be so embarrassing if I failed the audition, and I was determined to get the role, so I worked really hard to prepare for it. I felt very pressured about having to do well. I was really nervous and excited, and I was really happy when I got the part."

Jung Eun Chae as Kyung Hee, "a doting and gentle woman."

Yup, we're getting a The King: Eternal Monarch reunion here! FYI, Jung Eun Chae starred in the fantasy series as Prime Minister Goo Seo Ryung alongside Lee Min Ho, who played Emperor Lee Gon.
