After rewatching episode 12, I really liked how the writer has created a character and story that makes it believable for the male character to chase after the girl despite multiple rejections and to value her more than anything else. There are so many shows with HS and WW type of romance where you have to suspend your sense of disbelief on why the guy like girl so much once they're at the point of difficult hurdles.

I liked the episode, anytime I like an episode and a lot of people hate it I feel as though I'm whispering when I say I liked it. I actually think that it was pretty positive for the SoSoo ship because even though Soo was rejecting him over and over again her inner monologues which are missing from the international version indicate that her heart is moving in that direction. This is the first episode where she has admitted that even if it was to herself. She seems to think that she's responsible for the bad things that have happened to WS including him having to leave Songak for a year. HS seems as though she needs some time to grieve over everything that happened because she hasn't dealt with anything yet as she can only sleep after she's worked herself to the bone. 

I know that people have been giving IU a hard time for her acting but I think that she's doing a good job. This episode she had to convey more emotions with her face/eyes than before and I thought that she did a great job. I think that she portrayed the longing to accept WS's proposal, and the worry at seeing him with the mask again were really well done.

I think that HS will fully let go of Wook once she realizes that the person that she loves and the person that he really is, are two completely different people. She fell in love with an illusion and I think that the next episode or two will reveal who Wook really is to her. I feel as though any time Wook was on screen this episode I was cursing him out in my head. Him trying to pin everything about the poisoning on So is disgusting I was glad that for the second time in 2 episodes someone put him in his place. I was feeling shades of Lady Oh when So was telling him off for being useless. When he was all but telling YH that she should give herself to Yo I was so done with him. YH is by no means my favorite person but him basically telling him to take one for the team and get with Yo as a way of paying off her debts to him is so disgusting and smarmy that I was penciling him in ahead of Yo on the who should go first should the fratricide commence. I by no means was like yay Wook before these couple of episodes I'm always weary of people both on dramas and in real life who seem too perfect but I didn't expect that under Wook's mask of perfection and sincerity lurked this disgusting human being. Even more pissed at him for deriding So for wanting to marry a "maid" than I was when I saw the preview, for him to refer to HS as a maid as though she's not a person who he claimed to love, ugh. I really like the way that this show is highlighting the differences between Wook and So. Wook's immediate reaction after finding out where HS is we can't go against the king while So essentially tells the king that he is no longer doing what the king wants because he didn't keep his word and left to go get Soo. 

I snickered when Taejo told Soo that he essentially ran a Goreyo era background check on her. His advice is sound though, Soo needs to stop worrying about what will happen and whether or not Gwangjong is going to kill all of his brothers and live in the here and now where So is not king but a prince who loves her. 

This show is suffering from having so many stories to tell in such a short time frame, they shortchanged the Woo Hee/Baek Ah storyline and the HS/WH storyline I would have liked to see even 2-5 minutes more of their storylines because it feels so rushed we didn't get to see how Baek Ah got from where he was the last time he saw WH to playing music for her or even see the beginning of the friendship between HS and WH.

I think we can relate in that sometimes someone that we had really deep feelings for may forsake us and we still come up with excuses for them and hope that they didn't have ill intentions and that our trust in them is validated.

I honestly believe at this point she doesn't want a relationship with any prince because she thinks that she will give bad luck to anyone that comes near her. Especially since she tells him afterwards not to do anything that will cause him any potential danger. I think some interpreted as a scornful/sarcastic remark, but personally I think she just really doesn't want anyone to hurt themselves for her sake anymore, after what happened with Court Lady Oh. She seems to be resigned to the fact that if she leads a quiet life of loneliness, she won't cause anyone any trouble. Which leads me to my thoughts on HS-WS....

HS-WS: 

Some believe that there was no romantic development between Hae Soo and Wang So and that this was a waste of an episode. I don't think that is the case...

In the scene where she says goodbye to him, you can't deny that she said she can't let go of him or ignore him (in her voiceover) even though her heart was with someone else. Also, when he pulled her close and looked like he was about to go in for the kiss, her expression is a bit different than usual in that it looked like she was getting a bit lost in his eyes. You see a second later as his face gets super close, she catches herself and gasps, then looks down to avoid his gaze. It looked like her own reaction surprised herself. 

The reason why she told So to forget her is because she believed that by helping her, he was sent away by the King, even though all he ever wanted was to stay in the Palace. You can understand how guilty someone like Hae Soo would feel if she thought she was the reason for that. She just wants him to be happy, and she knows that by sticking close to him, he will become unfavourable which is why she wanted him to leave her. I kind of think that is romantic, in a way -- she's trying to save him from her misfortunes. 

When they meet the second time while she's hanging laundry, it may seem like she is rejecting So, but when she first realizes that So is actually back, tears well up in her eyes and she seems to be overcome with emotion. When she sees that his mask is back on she is very concerned for him. I think you can tell that she missed him too, but being a laundry maid, she now has to be careful about what she does and what she says (don't forget they are in broad daylight, whereas Wook came to her at night with no one around). Sure, she's very mean to So here, but I think it's to protect him. She knows that asking him to forget her won't be enough because he's so resilient, so she will have to be mean to him to make him give up on her finally. 

During the third meeting, outside the Peace Ceremony, when So asks her to marry him, you can see Hae Soo hesitate. In the very last moment, when he gives the hairpin to her, and says that if he cannot live in peace with her, being King doesn't mean anything to him -- she looks at him right in the eye and stares for a few seconds before she says no. When she says no, just like before with the kiss, it's like she catches herself before she gets lost in her emotions. I think it's very subtle but handled very well by IU. It shows that the character is starting to waver ever so slightly at every WS advance, but often catches herself to remind herself the decision she has made (to break all ties with the princes).

I am actually very glad that they don't make HS so fickle... Without knowing YH & later WW's involvement in the poisoning plot, she cannot know the extent of his betrayal. And from the conversation with Baek-ah while she was kneeling, she knows that even if WW showed solidarity by kneeling (or stand with her like WS did), it would probably have been futile in saving Lady Oh. As she is kind & loyal, she wouldn't fault WW for not being able to help her, nor would she just abandon him.

As for WS-HS moments in this episode (SBS version), I agree that the unspoken words show the depth of the feelings she already has for WS. (Kudosx1000 to IU for the acting; she was good in last episode with the open grief/angst... but the subtlety of her acting in this episode SOLD me her emotions in WS-HS scenes.)

For me, this is a very meaningful episode. While HS-WW romance had always been just about spoken words/promises, HS-WS romance is all about unspoken words and instinctual actions. And that is so very powerful.

i am watching the international version last night and read the recap for sbs version. For wook-so-soo story, as what i remember, there is not much of difference between the two version. international version could be a bit worse because there are no soo's voiceover at all unlike the sbs version. and that voiceover is actually so important to convey what hae soo really feels. but, without it, we can still get to understand it through iu expressions and body language.

every step she takes is rewarded by a huge slap in the face, to the point that she is now permanently crippled for her pains, and chances are it was all for nothing. she no longer even wants to live, resigning herself to an existence where she tires herself to the bone so that she can no longer think about the fear and despair she lives with every day. everyone who’s ever been kind to her has ended up dead or in danger because of her. like So, she now believes she’s cursed, only unlike him, she’s had two lifetimes of misery telling her that. that she was wrong to ever think she could change her fate, her future. that if she dares to get close to him, or anyone else, they will either abandon her or end up dead. even if being with Socould make her happy, which she hasn’t even had time to think about yet, she is fully convinced that doing so would put them both in harm’s way. (I mean, look what happened with Wook. she’s not about to make the same mistake twice.)

on top of this, a large part of her terror has been because of So from the very beginning. he starts out terrorizing her specifically, then basically does a 180 from that to insisting she belongs to him, despite her protests. she hasn’t even had a chance to adjust to the fact that Wook, who she believed was the road would take her to happiness, has gone from being the hand she took to begin a new life, someone who promised her happiness and safety, to deserting her entirely. and she doesn’t even think this was wrong of him, because she is so totally unselfish that she believes it’s better for him to not be involved with her. in a way, she even believes she is protecting So, and that he (So) will get over his “mistaken” feelings if she waits long enough. 

she can’t even sort out what her feelings for So are, she just knows she is equal parts afraid for him and afraid of him, that he will be the cause of the sound of battle in the courtyard, the bloody visions that play themselves out in front of her eyes. she cares about him, but if there’s anything she’s been taught so far by her experiences, it’s that she can change nothing, and every time she tries she’s beaten down to the point where she can’t get up again. 

and speaking of feelings, of course her feelings for Wook remain, she really wanted to be with this guy even if it meant never going back to her normal life. she would never consider it his fault he didn’t help her, just that he dodged a bullet and should continue to stay away from her. in fact, she’s trying to push anyone away who does help her, because look what’s happened to the people who helped her the most. she just wants to know that both he and So are okay and that they care enough to miss her, that’s enough for her before she lets them both go. she knows she’s hurting So’s feelings, but she believes this is for his own good and for her good, considering he may very well turn into a monster at any second. I mean, just look how unpredictable his behavior has been so far. any second he could do a complete 180 again and bam, Gwangjong. 

it’s going to take her a while before her courage returns, if it ever does. before she can even contemplate putting her own happiness first (or even believe that So can give her that, the way he’s promising), she has to receive some assurance that the universe at large is not going to squash her the moment she puts a toe out of line. with her spark beaten out of her, all she has left now is her kindness, and she truly believes it is kinder to So not to let him get any closer to her, and kinder to herself not to be standing directly in the crossfire if and when he becomes Gwangjong. and regarding the second part of his offer: like hell she’s going to use him like that, use his feelings for her as an escape, especially when the king’s just told her that she needs to be an observer to what happens in the palace. 

considering all that’s happened. she’s just trying to get by here and protect the people she loves from a distance. she’s not mad at Wook because she has a forgiving heart, unlike some of y’all. and me for that matter because I find Wook’s arc interesting but on a personal level - yeah, screw that guy. I’d have been miles away by now because I have a solid sense of self-preservation but. I’m off-topic. what I mean to say here is that Soo will come around on the rest, in her own good time.

tl;dr y’all need to give Soo a break. she’s developing her worldview here and for now she has no courage to be happy. if you’ll move mountains to make excuses for Wang So because of his traumatic past, then you can darn well try to understand what my girl Hae Soo is going through. just because her arc has been the opposite of his so far doesn’t mean she isn’t trying, too.

 

Words of wisdom again from kang-chul

People need to take a step back and really look at Hae Soo. Every action and re-action is in response to her character arc so far. It all fits. We just need need a little patience for her to find her courage again. 

When she loves, it's wholeheartedly. We'll see that when she eventually responds to Wang So and I have no doubt that she will respond. Every word, every action has been authentic. It'll make their love that much more REAL.

I loved the quietness of this episode, such great moments between the leads. I like that Soo doesn't get over Wook so easily, it makes their romance more valid and it will be pivotal further down the track, if the Kdrama follows a similar route to BBJX.

Also it's a nice character trait for Soo to have, her loyalty is paramount and I wonder what it will take for her to finally move on from Woo and then to So, it's part of the journey, I do hope it's worth the wait. 

What I do miss is the relationship between our lead female and the King, I loved that in the Cdrama and they briefly touch on it in this episode, however the lack of the relationship gave us Court Lady Oh, so I'd call it even.

I do hope they do a DVD and include any and all missing scenes, I would do unspeakable things to make that happen

Thanks for the kind words @zi4r I was worried that everyone saw this as a failed episode, but I'm glad that someone agrees that there is a lot of meaning behind the scenes between HS-WS in this ep. I couldn't agree more about the unspoken words and instinctual actions...we can't deny that they both care for each other and HS is falling for the 4th prince, even if she doesn't want to admit it

I am watching the SBS sub. Trying to understand the details. And watch their expression.

Now at the part she and Wook and I saw was hurt and sadness. While Wook explaining the reasons, she cut him off and ask "did you miss me". For those who complained... they miss the part how hurt she sound like she accused Wook that did he truly miss her. The eng sub for SBS really a lot better. How she finally see Wook enough for who he is.
