hey guys! I found a really great program!

thinkin of going in september! anyone else wanna come along with? Hahaha ^^

http://www.wle-korea.com/ Dunno exactly where I am going to go.....but I am going to stay at a host family! I think...>.>

Hey you guys,

I studied abroad in South Korea in Suwon, South Korea back in the summer of 2006. I was reading my previous posts in this thread about being worried about money and cultural differences. To tell you the truth, it wasn't too much of a problem. Studying in abroad in South Korea was the best time of my life.

I don't want to sound like an ad for Ajou University's International Summer Session but I'll share some experiences I had at Ajou.

  • - Free 3-day field trip to:
Gyeongju (Korea's old ancient capital, lots of beautiful temples and tombs)
    Cheonan (Independence Hall)
Busan (Haeundae beach, fish markets, Busan Tower, Stay at
Arpina Hostel
- Truly international participants from all over the world
- Regular Ajou Students will be attended classes as well (10 or so)
- Beautiful Campus, very green
- Every Wednesday there is a Korean Cultural class where you take part in Korean activities or field trips (Suwon Traditional Village, Korean Museum, Nanta performance, Pottery making, Taekwondo, etc)

I loved how Ajou's summer program was all made of international students and not only Korean Americans. You get the best of both words: gain Korean friends and international friends. I had a friend who went to Yonsei for their KLI, and he told me 80% of their participants were Korean American. He was the only Indian guy there. I will miss the jjimjilbang's (korean sauna houses), noraebangs, clubbing at Kangnam and Hongdae areas, shopping in the crowded Myeongdong district, chompin on Lotteria's Frico Cheese burgers, and drinking soju in the dorms :) I got to visit the infamous DMZ border and Panmunjeom. If you want to hear more about my experiences, I've blogged some of it on my xanga link down in my signature.

If you are thinking about studying abroad in Korea, DO IT!! It is worth every $$$. I am not Korean and I had the best time of my life. I even attended a Filipino language church in Hyewha! The Korean people were very nice even for a hefty guy like myself. It is relatively safe at night and drinking is the norm! The only major problem is that during the summer is Korea's heaviest rainy season. So most of the times we just spent the time indoors at noraebangs or pc bangs (I still can't believe they have a gaming viewing channel studio in CO-EX Mall!?!?!).

This is a video that the Ajou ISS made for all of us during our time in Korea.

I just got my admissions letter last week and I got into the Yonsei program (for the academic year.) There's so much paperwork involved though~ ;) But I guess it's a small price to pay to go study in Korea, hehe.

I think I'm going to stay in the dorms for the first semester, maybe even the second.. is anyone else going to Yonsei and staying the dorms?? There's a position where you can request a specific roommate and I thought it might be fun to room with a fellow Soompier :) PM me if you wanna room~!!

unfortunately it is not in Busan but you get to have a free field trip to Busan! :) Ajou University is actually located in Suwon South Korea, about 30 minutes from Seoul.

OK so Yonsei is the popular choice for a study abroad program, but has anyone heard anything about Korea University? What sort of rep does it have for foreign students, socialising, academic achievement etc?

To be more specific, I will be taking Korean studies at university in UK but I get to spend a year abroad as part of the course-so of course it will be learning Korean language and culture, which offers the best for this - Korea or Yonsei?

Oh and if Yonsei and Korea are the two of the three top universities in Korea, would Korean employers hold it in high esteem if its part of you degree?

^ korean employers might find it interesting that you did study abroad at one of those places, but probably not enough to get you a job.

study abroad students have to have a minimum 2.0 gpa to be accepted.

korean students have to take a hard entrance exam and also graduate.

=\

I wanted to do the Yonsei year program but on the website it says fall is 2nd semester and spring is 1st...

Does that mean I have to take spring 2008 to fall 2008?

probably...

in japan and korea at least, the new school year starts in the spring (usually march/april).

and many schools are on a 3 semester system. spring, fall, winter...something like that.

ask the ppl at your school to be sure...

a lot of people i know did yonsei and will do yonsei this summer. sadly, i won't be doing it even though i really would LOVE to!! my parents are sending me to europe instead because they say that i can always go to korea since it's my homeland...

but anyways, my best friend has been there for a year now and she's really loving it. so if anything... i guess it would be helpful to go with a positive mind, open to new experiences? :)

or if all else fails, soju is cheaper than water... soooo get crunk/drunk/all that jazz?? :w00t:

Nah. You can just sign up for one and then do another semester right after that.

It's pretty effing easy to continue your studies at Yonsei. They have absolutely no standards for students. There are a lot of dumbsh**s here.

But fun stuff. =] Classes in the academic year are a joke. The KLI program is a bit different and full of all the weird people- but you'll meet some chill international students through the regular DIEE year program.

Avoid the summer gyopo immigration.
