'Fabricated City' tops weekend with strong 896,606 debut

By Shim Sun-ah

SEOUL, Feb. 13 (Yonhap) -- The Korean action film "Fabricated City" collected 896,606 viewers last weekend, rising to No. 1 on the local box office, data showed Monday.

The latest by "Welcome to Dongmakgol" director Park Kwang-hyun, "Fabricated City" surpassed the 1 million mark in attendance Sunday, the fourth day of its run, according to figures from the Korean Film Council (KOFIC).

Starring Ji Chang-wook, Shim Eun-kyung and Ahn Jae-hong, the film is about a jobless young gamer who is jailed after being framed as a rape-murder suspect but is determined to unearth the truth with help from other members of his online gaming group.

Backed by the film's rave reviews and strong performance in the box office, its distributor CJ Entertainment increased the number of theaters showing it from 771 on the first day to 1,019 on Sunday.

The runner-up, also from CJ Entertainment, was the comedy-action flick "Confidential Assignment," which drew 543,372 viewers over the weekend.

Released on Jan. 18, the movie exceeded the 7 million mark Sunday, the 25th day of its run. The pace is faster than "Miss Granny" (2013) and "The Berlin File" (2012), two of the most-viewed Korean films of all time among those released in January. The two films reached the milestone on the 27th and 34th day of their runs, respectively.

Starring Hyun Bin and Yoo Hae-jin, "Confidential Assignment" tells the story of two cops from South and North Korea who team up for a joint covert operation to hunt down a North Korean crime ring that has sneaked into the South.

The top two CJ films dominated a combined 60 percent of ticket sales at the box office.

"xXx: Return Of Xander Cage," an American action thriller starring Vin Diesel, landed at No. 3 with 254,903, pushing "The King" to fourth place.

The Korean political-crime thriller made a bullish debut soon after it was out in theaters early last month but garnered only 114,190 viewers on its fourth weekend. It was followed by the American sci-fi film "Arrival," seen by an audience of 89,939.

[Interview] Ji Chang Wook “Fabricated City” press interview compilation (Image heavy)

2017020533052708.jpeg?w=600&h=900

Ji Chang Wook met reporters from various press agencies for interviews prior to the official opening of “Fabricated City”, and numerous articles were published over the past couple of weeks in conjunction with his movie promotions. Since most articles had repetitive content, we’ve compiled his answers to various topics in our post below, along with a boatload of additional photos taken during said interviews.

2017020201113657006_m.jpeg?w=600&h=399

The dangers of action

At an interview conducted in a Samcheong-dong cafe on 1st February, Ji Chang Wook revealed, “I’ve not mentioned this before, but Oh Jung Se broke his ribs because of me.”

“I cracked his ribs while doing some action stunts in a climatic scene. He was in a lot of pain then and I thought his muscles must have taken a shock because I touched him wrongly, but I later found out from the staff that his ribs were broken. He didn’t say anything so I felt very apologetic.”

“Because of that, I realised that it’s not a good thing to get carried away with your emotions when doing action scenes.”

In the movie, there are more scenes of him getting beaten up than him beating others. “This is the first time I got beaten up so much. After getting hit so much, I realised that hitting others is actually more comfortable. When you hit others, even though it may not be a serious injury, there’s still the possibility of the person getting injured, which made it rather difficult for me because I felt rather uncomfortable, so I thought it would be more comfortable to be beaten, but that wasn’t the case. It’s painful when you get beaten (laughs). I’m also human, so I even felt a little irritated after doing several takes (laughs).  But I couldn’t get angry since that was just acting. There was no way I could vent (laughs).”

Despite that, Ji Chang Wook feels that action was not his biggest challenge in this movie. “The action scenes were not overly difficult. The action team will choreograph the moves depending on each situation, and I acted by doing repeated practices with them. ‘Fabricated City’ is not a movie that is centered on action alone. I had to imagine and act out the emotional parts, so it was more tiring emotionally than physically.”

Ji Chang-wook finds a fitting film : A lead role in the action hit ‘Fabricated City’ was a first for the young star

Actor Ji Chang-wook plays a character who is neither a spy nor a detective in the action flick “Fabricated City.” Though the character is simply a jobless game addict in his 20s, he ends up saving himself after being framed as a murderer.

Since his debut in 2008, Ji has taken part in 13 TV series and has also appeared on musical stages in between. Though taking on his first lead role in a movie a decade after his debut seems quite late, Ji was ready for the challenge.

“I only do something if it is fun and interesting,” said Ji during an interview with M Magazine, an affiliate of the Korea JoongAng Daily.

The following are edited excerpts from his interview.

Spoiler

Q. Though you are commonly seen on TV, seeing you on the movie screen feels a little unfamiliar.

A. Yes that is true. But strangely, I debuted through an independent film, “Sleeping Beauty” (2008). After that, I didn’t have chance to shoot films. So it was a big decision for me to take part in “Fabricated City.” Although I was afraid, it was a challenge for me.

Why were you afraid?

The film cost nearly 10 billion won ($8.9 million) to make, so I was pressured and felt heavy responsibility. I was afraid because I thought that films are different from dramas. Only when I arrived at the shooting site did I feel assured and realized that acting for dramas and movies isn’t much different. All the actors and staff members put in their utmost effort and I gained confidence by collaborating with them.

Did you decide to star in the film to extend your career?

Not really. I’m not a very calculating person. I’m very cautious when selecting works, but the most important thing to me is whether I can enjoy it and also be good at it. When I read the script for “Fabricated City,” I wasn’t sure whether I had the kind of leadership that my role has. There were also some cartoon-like scenes, and I wasn’t convinced whether I would be able to persuade the audience. But I made up my mind to join after meeting the director, Park Kwang-hyun. When Park calmly convinced me, I had confidence that this movie would be refreshing.

Could you sympathize with your jobless character that is always stuck in the PC room playing games?

Yes I could because I often went to PC rooms, comic book shops and the karaoke when I was younger. I was also jobless in my early 20s and I’m actually a pretty good game player, although I now mostly play mobile games. So, it wasn’t difficult for me to sympathize with my character.

Director Park gave your action scenes pretty high praise. How do you feel?

I’m very flattered, but I want to stop hearing that (laughs). I never intentionally chose the action genre. When I chose a piece of work because of its attractive character or story, there was always action. Maybe that’s my taste. Though it’s definitely worthwhile, the process of preparing for those actions is very tough. In “Fabricated City,” there were strangely a lot of fighting scenes. When I shot those kinds of scenes [in the past], I felt uncomfortable so I thought it would be better to get hit. However, when I actually shot the scenes where I get hit, I unknowingly became so angry, which ultimately helped me to better focus on character’s emotions. Though it was fun, I wouldn’t want to do it again (laughs).

How do you feel about your achievement ahead of entering the mandatory military service this year?

My 20’s were very fierce. There were difficulties in everything I took part in, but that experience made me strong. To be honest, I used to have a fear of being in front of cameras, but I have overcome it. When I looked at older actors who have been in lead roles, I thought that they must feel like they have everything in the world. But when I finally reached that point, I wondered ‘Is there really a peak [in one’s career]?’ Though a peak may differ from person by person, I think the point where one feels satisfied is the climax of one’s career. My last 10 years had been satisfactory, but I think I can go even more. The world is big and there’s no limit.

A : “맞다.

A : “그렇지 않다.

A : “맞다.
