[Magazine] U-Weekly Issue 576 – New Action Star, Ji Chang Wook

uweekly-576-01

Ji Chang Wook (29), who is about to enlist in the army next year, has been dubbed an “expert action star” by the Korean media after starring in the drama “The K2”. Most Korean A-list actors reportedly prefer to star in short romance comedies that are around 20 episodes long, because they find action films too tiring and long-running dramas take too long to film. But Ji Chang Wook is not like that.

Five years ago, Ji Chang Wook shot to fame in the 159-episode daily drama “Smile Donghae”, and his performance in every show has left a deep impression on audiences. Maybe because he has prior experience in a daily drama, Ji Chang Wook has an especially large number of older female fans.

This is our second time interviewing Ji Chang Wook. In the interview this time around, we found Ji Chang Wook to be more steady and matured than other young male actors. We are really looking forward to his outstanding performance in his next piece of work!

Q: “The K2” has ended its run. Please share how you feel about filming this drama.
Now that filming is completed, I feel very happy and I can’t bear to leave it. What I will miss most is not being able to see the actors and staff whom I worked with.

Q: We heard that your pay for starring in “The K2” was the highest in the history of tvN, is this true?
Yes. I felt immense pressure when I learnt that I received the highest pay. Whenever I feel very tired during filming, I will think of the “high salary” and I just have to push myself on and work even harder. Haha.

Q: So are you satisfied with your performance in “The K2”?
Hmm, I don’t know how I should say this. If we look from the perspective of viewership ratings, I can’t say that it met my original expectations. But I heard from my manager about stuff like how the broadcasting rights was sold overseas and we didn’t make a financial loss, so he told me that I can be at ease. Haha.

[Event] W-Foundation releases charity CD “Hooxi, the Beginning”

0000000160042.jpeg?w=600

Around the end of November 2012, the W-Foundation (Wisdom for Future Foundation) of South Korea, a non-profit charitable organization (in conjunction with the National Geographic Channel) was tasked with spreading awareness about the urgency of protecting the environment in order to take action by ‘going green’ in our daily lives and to make the Earth safer for our children’s future.  As part of the W-Foundation’s ideas to raise awareness of such was the gathering together of several Korean actors (including our very own Ji Chang Wook), singers and sports figures in a chorus to perform in a music video entitled “Beautiful World.”

wfound4.jpg?w=600&h=346

Taking its cues from the previously recorded USA for Africa’s “We Are The World” in 1985, several well-known entertainers such as singers Insooni, Jo Sung Mo, Tiger JK Kim, Rainbow, Secret, B.A.P, The One and Girls Day; actors Park Soo Jin, Cho Yeo Jeong, Kim Sung Eun, Eom Ki Joon, Yoon Shi Yoon, Min Hyo Rin, Baek Jin Hee (and Ji Chang Wook); and sports stars Kim Nam Il and Kim Hyun Soo (and many others) joined their voices together as part of the W-Foundation’s “지구를 사랑하면 행동하라” / “If Love Earth, Take Action” awareness campaign.  Digging through The Kitchen’s archives, we just happened to still have a copy of the original performance.  Take a look!

[Breaking] Ji Chang Wook reviewing offer to join cast of drama “The Happiest Time of My Life”

1479199175124_1_121351.jpeg?w=600

Well THAT was fast!  It was announced today that Ji Chang Wook has either accepted or is still reviewing an offer for the lead male role in the upcoming drama “The Happiest Time of My Life” / “내 생애 가장 행복한 시간 ” (working title).  Details are extremely sketchy at present, but there are a few snippets that have been reported.

“The Happiest Time of My Life” is the comeback drama to be penned by writer Choi Ho Chul, who also scripted KBS2’s ‘Secret Love’ (starring Ji Sung and Hwang Jung Eum) and SBS’s ‘Mask’ (starring Soo Ae and Joo Ji Hoon).  This drama will be co-produced by Imagine Asia and Will Entertainment, is to be a 100% pre-produced melodrama, and filming is anticipated to begin in March 2017.

No broadcast network or other details are available (although it looks like SBS has the lead on airing).  A spokesman for Will Entertainment added, “Only the starting date of the drama production and the male character are confirmed, and it is still necessary for us to organize and arrange details.”

As news reports are all over the map about official confirmation from Glorious Entertainment, Wook’s acceptance, etc., we will update this post as more details arrive!

Ji Chang-wook eyes swift return to dramaland with Happiest Time of My Life

by javabeans | December 21, 2016

jichangwook_99.jpg

Back already? Not that I’m complaining about having Ji Chang-wook (The K2, Healer) in another drama, but it seems like The K2 just wrapped up and already he’s looking to jump into his next role. Chances are looking favorable that it’ll be a drama titled The Happiest Time of My Life, and while initial reports stated that Ji Chang-wook had confirmed the role, currently the official line from his reps is that he’s considering it positively.

Hardly any info has been given about the story, so for now we’ll just have to wait and see, though I would guess it’s another melodrama, given that it comes from writer Choi Ho-chul of twisted melodrama Secret and slightly less twisted, slightly less melo drama Mask. I’m thinking the title may ironic in some way — there may be happiness involved, but surely there will be a lot more pain, no? Just a hunch.

Even so, what I do like about writer Choi’s dramas is that they do have very angsty melo elements to them, but they tend to be fast-paced, dramatic, and full of plot twists. They’re exciting melos, not the slow, tedious kind that can feel nigh unbearable sometimes.

We do know that The Happiest Time of My Life will be a fully pre-produced drama, because somehow dramaland keeps trying. I do hope there’ll be a meaty story, because while I did enjoy The K2 despite its excesses and flaws, I didn’t really think Ji Chang-wook got much of a chance to do a lot, acting-wise, other than upgrade his stunt work and fight scene capabilities. Those weren’t nuthin’… just, I’d kind of wanted more of everything else from him, but the story just didn’t give him a shot.

Writer Choi is currently working on the scripts, and plans are to begin production in March.

[Movie] Ji Chang Wook to make his big screen debut soon in Fabricated City

image

Actor Ji Chang Wook will be making his big screen debut through the movie “Fabricated City”.  “Fabricated City” is about a man who gets framed for murder within 3 minutes 16 seconds, and he joins hands with members of his virtual gaming team to uncover the mastermind of the case. Ji Chang Wook plays the role of Kwon Yoo who gets framed for the murder, and is expected to show highly difficult action scenes and emotional acting in the movie.

In order to prepare for the role of Kwon Yoo, Ji Chang Wook not only spent several months training for high difficulty action stunts at an action school, he also personally did dangerous stunts ranging from large scale car chases to wire action to close-range combat that are both unique and refreshing.
image

Besides action, Ji Chang Wook will also show his emotional range, from the injustice he suffered from being framed as a murderer, to the sadness of losing a loved one, to the anger upon discovering the mastermind.

Director Park Kwang Heon said, “Ji Chang Wook is an actor with a excellent sense for acting and action. His portrayal covers a wide spectrum from strong masculinity to a delicate youth, and he’s an actor with a superb ability to adapt to situations.”

“Fabricated City” will be released in cinemas in Korea in February.

*** I would definitely watch this…interesting story. FINALLY.... I’ve seen the trailer & this looks really good! The visual effects look very good. No amount of JCW is too much. It looks like a full-packed action movie. It looks badass. Ye, I’m so excited for this! So NICE to read the news about the release date. JCW looks cool. Who wouldn’t want more of that? He looks so hot doing all that action. It’s always great to see Ji Chang-wook onscreen in any project of his! I’m hoping whatever he chooses next will be nothing like what he’s done before. I’m loving the poster. Hope “Fabricated City” won’t disappoint us. Anyway, wishing him all the best with this film. JCW, fighting!

After 'Fabricated City,' actor Ji Chang-wook says no more action roles

SEOUL, Jan. 9 (Yonhap) --- Actor Ji Chang-wook said Monday after filming the upcoming crime-action thriller "Fabricated City" and the 2016 TV series "The K2," he is unlikely to choose another action role that demands such a grueling training schedule.

"I made many efforts to make myself look cool when I opened fire in 'Fabricated City'," Ji, 29, said at a news conference for the new film directed by Park Kwang-hyun, best known for "Welcome to Dongmakgol" (2005). "So I became a constant visitor to the action school where I trained for almost two months."

Since the shooting of "The K2" was so close to "Fabricated City," Ji said the experience helped him a lot in playing a bodyguard in the romance-action drama.

His character in the 2016 tvN drama was a former mercenary who is hired by a presidential candidate's wife to keep her husband's illegitimate daughter away from the public eye.

In the new film Ji plays Gwon-yu, a jobless young gamer who is jailed after being framed for murder but struggles to unearth the truth with help from other members of his online gaming team. This marks his silver screen debut.

Actress Shim Eun-kyung of the 2013 box office hit "Miss Granny" (2013) and actor Ahn Jae-hong of the popular television series "Reply 1988" play the two other gamers named Yeowul and Demolition.

Ji, who has already played many action-packed characters in such dramas as "Healer" (2014) and "Warrior Baek Dong-soo" (2011), is fast gaining attention as a rising action star in South Korea.

But Ji said becoming an action star was unintentional. It was only when a fan approached him in the street and asked why he only did action roles that he even realized that had become his image.

"I thought I did my best in many different genres, but the impact of my action characters appeared to be too strong. So, I thought it wouldn't be a bad choice to intentionally avoid the action genre in the future."

It took 12 years for director Park to release his new work after the huge commercial success of "Welcome to Dongmakgol," a comedy-drama about Korean War enemies who combine forces to defend a peaceful mountain village from a bombing.

The film captivated viewers and critics alike for its comical drama full of creative imagination and humanity. How would Park's crime-action thriller be different from other movies in the genre?

"Mine is a bit more hilarious and bright film, unlike typical crime movies that are dark and cruel. I wanted to make a fresh one in the crime-action genre," the director said.

In addition, he said the film bears a close resemblance to Korea in the 21st Century era where Google's AlphaGo AI program can play Go with a human champion and there are many hackers in cyberspace.

"I hope many young moviegoers would empathize with the movie," he said.

"Fabricated City," presented and distributed by CJ Entertainment, is set to open in local theaters next month.

Ji Chang Wook To Make Big Screen Debut With Shim Eun Kyung And Ahn Jae Hong In Crime Action Movie

manipulated city 2

It was first revealed in July, 2015 that Ji Chang Wook and Shim Eun Kyung will be starring as the main characters of the movie “Manipulated City” (tentative title), and the film is finally set to premiere next month. It was also confirmed that Ahn Jae Hong from “Reply 1988” would be joining them.

In the crime action movie, a man who is falsely charged of murder (Ji Chang Wook) unveils the truth about the case and retaliates with his teammates (Shim Eun Kyung and Ahn Jae Hong) within a time limit of 3 minutes and 16 seconds.

The three actors and director Park Kwang Hyun attended a press conference for the movie on January 9.

Ji Chang Wook had only appeared in dramas until now, making this movie his first big screen debut. He revealed, “I was undecided about starring in the movie when I first read the scenario, but after meeting the director and talking with him, I was completely persuaded.”

He went on about his role and genre selection, “I used to play a lot of games when I was in high school. I remember going to the PC room often, so I didn’t really have to do anything in preparation for my character who goes to the PC room all the time,” adding, “I didn’t always choose to do action works, but somehow I ended up doing them.”

Fellow actress Shim Eun Kyung will be taking the role of the dark hacker Yeo Wool who suffers from social phobia, and Ahn Jae Hong will be starring as Demolition, a detailed sniper in the game world and a specialist in explosives in the real world.

Ahn Jae Hong complimented Ji Chang Wook’s acting in action scenes, saying, “I almost fell for him after seeing his action scenes. He has long legs and arms, so each move looks really cool when he does it.”

Even the director spoke highly of Ji Chang Wook’s acting. “Ji Chang Wook is not an action-only actor. I chose him because I wanted a new face in my movie, and it turned out that he’s really good at action scenes too. I didn’t know that because he’s only been in dramas until now. I hope he won’t be mistaken as an actor that only does action because he’s actually skilled at many things,” he praised.

“Manipulated City” will premiere in February. Are you looking forward to it?

Editor's Note:  The translation here is wrong.  It took 3 minutes and 16 seconds for Ji Chang Wook's character to be falsely labelled as a murderer; the statement that Kwon Yoo has to solve his crime in 3 minutes and 16 seconds is not correct.
