Live-Action Bakuman Sells Over 500,000 Tickets in 9 Days

The live-action film of Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata’s Bakuman. manga has sold over 500,000 tickets as of October 11. The movie opened in Japan on 325 screens on October 3. It sold 184,263 tickets for 251,607,900 yen (about US$2.08 million) in its opening weekend, and ranked #1 in the Japanese box office for the October 3-4 weekend.

Lead actor Takeru Satoh (Kamen Rider Den-O, Beck, Kanojo wa Uso o Ai Shisugiteru, Ryōmaden, Rurouni Kenshin) said that when he watched this film, he thought that it is great to appear in such a wonderful work, regardless of box office numbers. Still, he is pleased that so many people have seen this film. Co-star Ryunosuke Kamiki (Rurouni Kenshin, Howl’s Moving Castle, Summer Wars, The Secret World of Arrietty) said that he is truly happy and thrilled that the film on which he worked so hard has been seen by so many.

Over the October 10-12 holiday weekend, the two actors took part in a “Nationwide Baku Run! 1-Man. Stage Greetings” campaign. They traveled   to 23 theaters to greet audiences — the most theaters either had ever visited for a stage greeting campaign.

The film adapts Ohba and Obata’s original manga about two friends who decide to become manga creators, aiming to serialize their manga in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine.

Satoh plays Moritaka Mashiro, a boy who aspires to be a manga artist, and Kamiki plays his classmate and story collaborator Akito Takagi. The film follows Moritaka and Akito as they walk the path to becoming manga creators. Nana Komatsu plays the heroine Miho Azuki.

Other cast members include Kenta Kiritani (Beck, Crows Zero) as manga creator Shinta Fukuda and Hirofumi Arai (Kiki’s Delivery Service, Space Brothers) as manga creator Kazuya Hiramaru 

Sarutoki Minagawa (Death Note, Ashurajō no Hitomi) as assistant manga artist Takurō Nakai and Takayuki Yamada as editor Akira Hattori 

Lily Franky as editor-in-chief Sasaki and Kankuro Kudo as Moritaka’s late manga creator uncle Tarō Kawaguchi 

Shōta Sometani (Parasyte, Himizu) as Moritaka and Akito’s rival Eiji Niizuma 

Hitoshi Ōne (Moteki, Koi no Uzu/The Vortex of Love) directed the film. Obata emphasized that he is not just credited as a creator of the film’s concept, but also as a staff member directly involved in the production. His own art appears in the film as the various manga that Moritaka draws.

Japanese rock band Sakanaction (Kin Kyori Renai live-action film) provided the film’s theme song “Shin Takarajima” (New Treasure Island). The song title comes from Osamu Tezuka’s 1947 manga New Treasure Island, the artist’s first published manga book volume.

  During this stage greeting tour, they visited nine cities, Fukuoka~Hiroshima~Nishinomiya~Osaka~Nagoya~Sapporo~Sendai~Saitama~Tokyo, and had as many as 23 stages, showing their thanks directly to the audience of more than ten thousand in three days.

In each stage greeting, Takeru said, 'This is a film we’d like to present everybody with pride. We need your cooperation. If you felt this film good at all, please tell your neighbors what you felt watching this film.'♪

I hope so too @hiranade, but it's hard since they are also competing with Hollywood movies and the stars of these films even visit Japan and promote in the same Japanese morning TV programs as they did, as early as 6 am.  At least they made it to the  number 1 spot on their first week. ^^

Report: Bakuman Stage Greetings at Umeda, Osaka

On Oct 9^th, I went to the stage greetings at TOHO Cinemas Umeda in Osaka.
I’ll report how the event progressed

My seat was the rightmost one in the fifth row.
Takeru and Ryu appeared through the door just in front of me!

S: Good evening. I’m Sato Takeru. You’ve already seen the film, right? How did you like ’Bakuman’?

(Applause)

S: Since you’ve seen it, we can talk anything, so I’d like to enjoy answering your questions.

K: Good evening. I’m Kamiki Ryunosuke. Thank you for coming here. We can talk anything about the film, so please enjoy yourselves. Thank you.

MC: We’ve come to Osaka at last.

S: Right. We were in Fukuoka in the morning. And we’ve gradually traveled west.

K,MC:　…

S: ？

MC: East.

K: Yes, east.

S: Thank you very much. If you hadn’t told me so, I wouldn’t have noticed to the last. First we went west (from Tokyo), and then we moved to the east. This is the seventh time.

MC: OK, then let’s go on to the Q&A segment! This time, we ask you to come onto this stage to ask them questions.

(Screeeeeeeech!!!)

MC: That girl in red, please come here with your friend.

S: Why are you so nasty?
(*note: in the film, Saiko always wears blue clothes and Shujin red, and MC seemed to have chosen those in red in other cities.)

K: I’ve been listening to ONE OK ROCK these days. Takeru-kun is also, say, he and TAKA-kun have been good friends for years, right?

S: Me, OOR and Radwimps.

K: I know. You’ve been listening to them.

S: Thank you.

The girls descended the stairs.

S: Next! Who was born today?

(The audience was silent for a moment, and then a girl raised her hand! A girl and a boy appeared on the stage.)

S: If you please.

K: Happy Birthday!

S: Happy Birthday! Hello. Is it your birthday today?

Girl: Yes.

S: (Looking sideways at the boy) Uh…

Girl: We came from Nagoya. The film was very exciting. I liked the music, Sakanaction’s. I never expected to pogo watching a movie. The music in the scene where Kamiki-kun came up with an idea was really great and I got bumps.

Girl: I have a question. When I was watching ‘Oshare-izm’ on TV, you were talking a lot about your love. What in him touches you emotionally and what makes you feel he is cute?

Unable to choose one, someone shouted, ‘Who’s wearing school uniform!’, but at last MC chose one …

S: You chose red clothes again, right?

MC: Red catches my eyes … I’ll choose blue ones in the next show.

This time, two girls were moving to the stage.

S: Where has your energy gone? (to MC) Shall we have all the people raising their hands on this stage?

MC: Why…

S: Or shall we go down to the audience?

MC: To the audience?

(It is definitely impossible! LOL)

Girl: Well…
　Oh, no…！
　This is the second time to see this film.
　Oh, no …!
　You played very well, I thought, watching it.
　Oh, it’s impossible! I’ve no idea!!!!
 Can’t stop my legs from trembling … Oh, no …

(Both her legs and voice were trembling! Someone in the audience cheered her up!)

I’ve loved the original manga very much, and when I came to know you would play the main characters, I … very … ah … ah …

S: Won’t you come closer?

(These girls were standing far from them. Takeru was so nice!)

Girl: You were really cool. (she was crying!)

S: Yup. Thanks.

(To another girl) Do you have any question?

Girl: You said you like OOR and Rad. Which song do you like best?

(a good question!)

S: As for Rad, ‘Senshoku-tai’, 24?, I’m not sure. About OOR … it’s so hard. I love all the songs. Would this be OK? Sorry.

K: As for OOR, I love the song of our film, ‘Heart Ache’. And among the songs of Rad,’謎々(Nazo nazo)’ and I’m not sure how to read it ‘Ame Otoko?’ in kanji, ‘雨男子’. I was always listening to Rad in my school days, so I like their songs very much!

S: Thank you. Please watch your step.

MC: We are running out of time. Last word, please.

K: Thank you very much for coming. We made our best to make this film, so we’re happy if you enjoy it. And if you please, watch it again and again. Thank you very much.

Seems Q&A in stage greeting is so funny,I can imagine how 's that girl feeling, nervous and didn't believe can reach his idol kkkkkk...so cute. Sato and ryu reaction is good too, make relax the stage with their friendship

[SPOILER ALERT!!!]

A Wonderful Movie About the Hardships of Making Manga

Bakuman the movie is based on the manga of the same name by the creators of the popular Death Note manga series. The story is about two high school classmates who set off to become manga creators for Weekly Shonen Jump, the biggest name in the manga world. The movie is fantastic. 

Moritaka Mashiro is a young boy with a talent for drawing, a deceased relative who was once a manga creator for Jump, and a secret crush on his classmate, Miho Azuki. One day, another classmate, Akito Takagi approaches him with the idea of joining forces—Mashiro’s drawing ability giving life to Takagi’s story ideas—and creating manga together. Mashiro is reluctant at first, but when Azuki, a voice actress hopeful, learns of their plan, Mashiro spontaneously proposes to her, asking her to voice the heroine of their manga if it is adapted into an anime and then to marry him.

 

Azuki admits she has always had feelings for Mashiro and agrees to his proposal. With new purpose fueling him, Mashiro sets off with Takagi to create the manga that will be the most popular manga in Shonen Jump.

Japan doesn’t have a great track record with live-action adaptations of popular anime and manga, so I was a little nervous going in to see the live-action Bakuman movie. I wasn’t expecting total dreck, but I certainly wasn’t expecting to be blown away. So you can imagine my surprise when I actually kind of was.

At nearly two whole hours, Bakuman is long. It feels long. But it’s also so densely packed that it never really feels like a chore to watch. I’ve read the original manga, so I had a general idea of what was probably going to happen in the movie. There were multiple times in the theater when I found myself thinking, “Cripes, this is long, but such-and-such plot point hasn’t happened yet, so that means there’s more...” The movie is two hours long, but it feels like three. In a good way.

Much of the story involves manga creation and a very entry-level look at the inner workings of Shueisha, the publisher of Shonen Jump. While the movie doesn’t go a deeply in depth as the manga does, it covers the basics and makes it all interesting to learn. You could almost call it “Japanese Manga Industry: The Cliff Notes Version.” But even though the movie goes into moments of extensive expositional monologues, everything remains relevant and doesn’t derail the story.

In general, I tend to be very critical of Japanese acting. A lot of Japanese actors seem to rely on overacting and hyper-dramatization, which annoys me to no end. Granted, sometimes it’s the director and not the actors who are at fault, but either way, I will usually view a Japanese film with lowered expectations. In Bakuman’s case, however, the acting was actually relatively subdued to the point of a more realistic and believable story. While there was a definite difference in acting skill between certain characters, overall the movie was pleasingly grounded, making the story much more relatable.

Part of the story of Bakuman is one of artists with artistic motivation working to find a way to express that motivation within the confines of a rigid system. There is a rather colorful cast of characters in the movie all driven by a shared love of the manga they create and the medium in general. This passion is both inspiring and contagious. Watching characters express joy and frustration all born of the love they have for manga was extremely moving and as someone who has dabbled in the arts, I found it rewarding and cathartic.

As much as I enjoyed the movie as a whole, Bakuman was not without its weak points. The initial setup is rather rough and doesn’t seem to flow very well in the beginning which made me very nervous at first. The whole, “if my manga is made into an anime, will you voice the heroine and marry me?” part felt ham-fisted and could only be overlooked because it was necessary for the rest of the movie. Fortunately, the somewhat rocky beginning only lasts for about 5 minutes or so, and once the real meat of the story begins, it was all but forgotten.

As essential as the love story between Mashiro and Azuki is as a motivational factor for Mashiro to want to create manga, for the movie at large, it is surprisingly inconsequential and honestly, quite boring. Aside from one pivotal scene that leads to the climax of the movie, every time the two characters were on screen together, I couldn’t have been more bored. The movie feels like it screeches to a halt whenever the romance aspect pops up and I found myself frustrated, wanting to get back to the manga making.

While I did note that the acting was for the most part realistic and convincing, that doesn’t mean there weren’t moments when actors were acting like characters or caricatures instead of people. Whenever this happened, I was immediately taken out of the movie. Fortunately these moments are few and not cripplingly disruptive. Still, I couldn’t help but wish that these flaws had been fixed in what was for the most part a very enjoyable movie.

Bakuman may be the best and most enjoyable live-action manga adaptation I’ve ever seen. That’s not to say it’s without flaws, but overall I left the theater very satisfied and emotionally uplifted. Manga is an integral part of Japanese life, and watching what feels like a backstage pass to the inner workings, encased in an enthusiastic and motivating story, was both entertaining and gave insight as to why some people out there choose to work horrifyingly hard schedules of their own free will. Even if you’ve never been curious about what goes on behind the creation and publishing of your favorite manga, Bakuman is definitely worth a watch.

Plus, the movie has one of the more creative end credit sequences I’ve seen in a while.

Bakuman is currently showing in Japanese theaters. No word on a Western release, but if they aren’t planning to, they really should.

‘Bakuman’ Live Action Movie Review: Worth One’s Time and Money

"Bakuman" Live-Action movie adaptation is taken from the manga series of the same title that is written by Tsugumi Ohba and illustrated by Takeshi Obata. The film has been released in Japan first week of October, and so far has sold about US$2.08 million ticket sales.

Kotaku reports a brief description of the live-action movie adaptation of "Bakuman." The story revolves around the 2 high school students who dream to become a mangaka for the famous Weekly Shonen Jump- the world's most popular manga magazine line. Both these young boys aim to have their manga published in the said magazine.

Anime News Network adds that the main cast of the "Bakuman" movie are Takeru Satoh and Ryunosuke Kamiki. Satoh performs the role of "Moritaka Mashiro, a boy who aspires to be a manga artist" while Kamiki plays the role of Akito Takagi, the classmate of Mashiro and wants to become the story collaborator. Nana Komatsu plays the female lead character named Miho Azuki.

So what's the verdict of the critics in the movie "Bakuman?" As per Kotaku's review, it says that it is " best and most enjoyable live-action manga adaptation." The critic was a bit skeptical in watching the film because admittedly, Japan doesn't have a good track record in terms of live-action adaptations of manga and anime series.

"Bakuman" is worth of one's time and money. It is not only entertaining but also educational in a sense that the avid readers of manga get to understand why some of these mangakas "choose to work horrifyingly hard schedules of their own free will."

ANN says that even the actors of the "Bakuman" live-action film are happy and thrilled to work on this movie project. For Takero Satoh, after viewing the film, he said that "It is great to appear in such a wonderful work, regardless of box office numbers."

It is the 20th Anniversary for BIFF, Busan International Film Festival, the best film festival in Asia. Actor Sato Takeru attended as a representative of Japan. He was chosen as Japan's representative for "Asian Casting Market" and he was the first one to be invited. It is his second time participating in Busan International Film Festival.

The first event at the "Asian Casting Market" was held on October 5th, which Sato Takeru participated in. It was called "Casting Board." From Japan, Sato Takeru and Nagasawa Masami attended. From Korea, Kim Woo-bin and Kim GoEun, and from the Chinese region, Mark Chao and Sandorina Pinna. At the cross talk on stage outside, the 6 talked about producing some movie together some day in the future. They were very enthusiastic about their activity in Asia.

On that night Sato Takeru attended the star road (red carpet). He appeared wearing an elegant velour black tuxedo and walked slowly down the 150min carpet, in the town of Haeundae, waving to the audience and smiling.

Sato Takeru also appeared at the "Star Networking Reception", where invited actors and movie-related people gather. Sato will return after the official schedule in Korea and engage in the promotion activity of his starring movie in Japan "Bakuman" from October 3rd.
