'Inside Men' leads weekend box office

SEOUL, Nov. 23 (Yonhap) -- "Inside Men," a local film about corruption and revenge, dominated the South Korean theaters over the weekend, data showed Monday.

The Woo Min-ho feature film took in more than half of moviegoers from Friday to Sunday, with 1.26 million admissions across the nation, the data by the Korea Film Council showed. In total, it has been viewed by 1.6 million people since its release last Thursday.

"Inside Men," starring Lee Byeong-heon, Cho Seung-woo and Baek Yun-shik, portrays the sometimes symbiotic, sometimes parasitic relationships between politicians, the press, the wealthy, law enforcement authorities and organized criminals in South Korea.

"The Priests," meanwhile, relinquished its top position to finish second with 487,000 viewers, which was 19.5 percent of the total.

In "The Priests," directed by Jang Jae-hyun, two priests try to save a girl who they believe has been possessed by a demon after a car accident. Kim Yun-seok plays a priest and Jang Dong-won a deacon.

Opus Pictures, which is in charge of the film's overseas distribution, said the mystery thriller will be brought to theaters in North America, starting with Los Angeles and Dallas on Thursday.

"The Hunger Games: Mockingjay" ranked third with 330,959 viewers, followed by "Spectre," the 24th James Bond movie, with 211,473.

'Inside Men' surpasses one million viewers

Source: STARN News

Lee Byung Heon, Cho Seung Woo, and Baik Yoon Shik's new film, 'Inside Men.' has surpassed one million viewers.

According to the latest data summary released by Korea Film Council, movie 'Inside Men' has surpassed one million viewers just in three days.

This pace equals to that of 'Assassination' and 'Veteran,' and the fastest ever record ever achieved by a 19+ rated film.

'Assassination' and 'Veteran' were both released during summer vacation season, but 'Inside Men' was released in November, which is considered as one of the off-seasons of a year. Even though it was released in the middle of a off-season, 'Inside Men' has surpassed one-million viewers a day faster than 'The Divine Move (2014),' 'New World (2013),' and 'Nameless Gangsters (2012).'

'Inside Men' has attracted one million viewers in a much shorter time than 'Friends,' 'The Man From Nowhere,' 'Kingsman: The Secret Agent,' 'Tazza: The High Rollers,' and 'The Chaser' as well. If this pace continues, 'Inside Men' will be able to top box office charts this weekend.

'Inside Men' had debuted #1 on ticket reservation websites a week before the official release date, and 91,949 people have watched the movie in six hours after the official release. This record outpaces the opening record achieved by 'Interstellar,' which was released in November last year.

Meanwhile, 'Inside Men' is now being played at every movie theaters around Korea.

Source: INSIDE Korea JoongAng Daily

The webtoon-based political thriller “Inside Men” swept the weekend box office, soaring to first place with a whopping 1.3 million tickets sold.

On the other hand, the final installment of “The Hunger Games” series, “Mockingjay ? Part 2,” only reached third place, opening with 330,954 tickets sold, earning 3.4 billion won ($2.9 million).

Accounting for 53.2 percent of the box office sales made from Friday to Sunday, “Inside Men,” directed by Woo Min-ho, earned 10.5 billion won on its opening weekend.

With strong players like Lee Byung-hun, Cho Seung-woo and Baek Yoon-sik at the forefront, the film takes the audience on a two-hour intense journey into the dark corners of Korea’s power structure.

Baek plays Lee Kang-hee, a chief editorial writer of a conservative newspaper company who has the ultimate power to control public opinion, and hence the political and financial worlds. Lee sides with Jang Pil-woo (Lee Gyoung-young) to make him the next presidential candidate.

Lee Byung-hun plays a political hoodlum who once worked for Jang, but is now out for revenge after being betrayed. He collaborates with a prosecutor (Cho) to plan the revenge.

The movie became the fastest film to reach one million tickets sold out of all films rated 19 and over ever released in Korea.

Exorcist movie “The Priests,” starring Gang Dong-won and Kim Yun-seok, stepped down to second place, adding 487,682 tickets sold to its three-week total of 4.4 million. It has made 35 billion won so far.

The 24th installment of the “007” series, “Spectre,” which is reportedly the last film in which Daniel Craig will play the James Bond role, was in fourth with 211,473 moviegoers. Since it opened on Nov. 11, the film has sold 1.7 million tickets, earning 13.1 billion won.

Michel Gondry and Charlie Kaufman’s “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” (2004) is re-writing the history of re-released films in Korea by surpassing its original attendance in 2005, with 170,000 tickets sold on Friday. This is the first time a re-released film has achieved such a feat in Korea.

Within 18 days of its second release on Nov. 5, celebrating the film’s 10th anniversary since its debut in Korea, the movie starring Jim Carey and Kate Winslet has been seen by more than 200,000 people.

"Inside Men" dislodges "The Priests" for first...

After three weeks at the top of the pile, Jang Jae-hyeon's mystery drama "The Priests" has given way to Woo Min-ho's third feature, "Inside Men". Last weekend "The Priests" topped the chart by claiming over a million admissions (47%), but in the wake of the release of Woo's new thriller, Jang's popular flick slipped to second with 487 thousand admissions (20%). Since its release early November, "The Priests" (starring Kim Yoon-seok and Kang Dong-won) has attracted over 4.4 million filmgoers and banked over $30 million in the process.

The new number one, "Inside Men" (aka "The Insiders"), was released in Korea last Thursday, and from the 1,000+ screens it was allocated, the film attracted 1.2 million; around 53% of the box office pie. This political thriller stars Lee Byung-hun, Jo Seung-woo, and Baek Yoon-sik in a high-stakes political game for the presidential office that challenges the freedom of the press with scandalous power politics. In third place entered another new release, the much-anticipated final act in the "The Hunger Games" series of films: "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2". From 661 screens, the film attracted the interest of 330 thousand filmgoers around the country to capture 13% of the box office pie; world-wide, "Mockingjay - Part 2" has already grossed over $247 million and counting.

"Spectre" hit Korean screens last weekend where is settle in second with 37%; week two for the latest Bond film, however, saw it bumped down to fourth with 211 thousand admissions (8.7%). From fifth place onwards the total admissions tallies fell significantly, starting with the re-release of "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind" in fifth that only managed 30,775 admissions (1.3%). Peter Cousens's "Freedom" (starring Cuba Gooding Jr. and William Sadler) faired poorly in sixth place having claimed just 24,614 (1%) and was followed by the Chinese animation "Frog Kingdom" with 13.8 thousand.

Ridley Scott's adaptation of Andy Weir's novel "The Martian" is still with us in seventh place. "The Martian" has been in the charts for over a month now, and during its time in Korea this sci-fi epic has grossed $34.1 million in Korea alone, and around $486.4 million worldwide. The film is slowly slipping down the chart, however (last weekend it help third), and this past weekend it managed just 10 thousand admissions. Close behind Scott's latest was the Japanese animation "The Idolmaster Movie" with just under 8.5 thousand stubs sold, and the last film to make it into South Korea's top ten over the weekend was the American comedy drama "The Intern" by Nancy Meyers. "The Intern" has proven to be a popular choice in Korea and has managed to stick around the charts for two months. Since its released late September, "The Intern" has grossed $24.5 million in Korea and $183 million worldwide.

Bae Sung-woo is everywhere you look these days

Source: INSIDE Korea JoongAng Daily

26013348.jpg

Bae Sung-woo [STUDIO 706]

Actor Bae Sung-woo is so prolific that people say if you want to see him, just go to a theater.

In fact, he has appeared in 14 movies since last year. He almost always manages to leave a strong impression even in a supporting role.

This month alone, two of the actor’s films have been released: “Inside Man” and “You Call It Passion.”

Critics say the reason Bae is so sought-after in the Korean movie industry is his versatility. Poker-faced, he can be an unnerving villain, but with a smile, he turns into a clown. That’s probably why he was able to show such a wide spectrum of characters in recent months.

In the workplace thriller “Office,” Bae played an office worker who kills his own family and vanishes, while in the crime thriller “Veteran,” he became a clumsy secondhand car dealer. In “The Phone,” he portrayed a cold-blooded killer, and in “The Exclusive: Beat the Devil’s Tattoo,” he was a seasoned detective.

And in his latest projects in theaters now - “Inside Man” and “You Call It Passion” he’s back as a gangster and an entertainment reporter.

Hence, although the actor seems almost ubiquitous these days, people aren’t getting tired of watching him.

“I only realized that I have been in so many films after reading a news article that I came in second in the ranking of prolific actors,” Bae said.

“Since then, I got many phone calls from my friends that I buy them drinks,” the actor added, laughing.

In spite of the attention, Bae still isn’t used to the spotlight.

“It still feels a bit surreal when people recognize me on the street,” he said. “Many people seem to remember me from ‘Veteran,’ as it sold more than 10 million tickets.”

He admitted that the increased attention can be a burden. But as he gets more recognition, more roles are coming his way.

Bae says the roles he gets are usually either the villain or the clown.

“Some directors tell me they see something creepy in me, while others say they see something comical,” he said. “Depending on which director, they all see a different side of me, and they cast me accordingly.”

He added that he’s okay with either, but he prefers a character that’s imperfect and has room for improvement. “I do prefer a role where I beat someone else, rather than a role that gets beaten,” he said jokingly.

Bae says the turning point in his career was the 2011 film “Moby richard simmons.” Although the film was rather underappreciated, he said it marked a big step forward for him as an actor.

“It was since then that I got some major roles,” he said. “I believe because of ‘Moby richard simmons,’ I was able to star in ‘Way Back Home’ [2013] and in ‘Office’ and then ‘Veteran.’”

As for a fellow actor he hasn’t yet worked with but wants to, Bae picked Song Kang-ho. “I met him once and told him I was a big fan,” he said. “He said we should work together. It would be such an honor.”
