Lee Byung-hun’s latest domestic film “Inside Men” surged to the top of local box office on its release day Thursday.

According to the Korean Film Council, “Inside Men” attracted over 230,000 moviegoers in one day and amassed an accumulated ticket sales of 345,026 by Friday.

The figure surpasses both main actors Lee Byung-hun and Jo Seung-woo’s past records. Lee’s best-selling film “Masquerade (2012)” opened with 169,516 viewers and Jo’s “Tazza - The Hidden Card (2014)” began at 136,950.

“Inside Men” is a crime drama whose plot revolves around the evil masterminds that shape the South Korean underworld.

Other films “The Priests” starring Kang Dong-won and Kim Yun-seok and “Hunger Games: The Final” came in second and third, respectively, in Thursday box office numbers.

Separately, Lee has been the subject of local controversy last year over a blackmail scandal involving his lewd comments to younger female celebrities.

Lee Byung-Hun Returns Home For New Korean Movie

BEYOND DECEIT Puts The Star In A Heavy Role

Lee Byung-hun is a busy man.

The Korean movie star returned to the world of American film production (last seen in the states for 2013’s RED 2 and G.I. JOE: RETALIATION) for summer sci-fi franchiser TERMINATOR: GENISYS. In the film, Lee took a turn as the iconic cyborg.

Additionally, the actor performs next to acting heavyweights Al Pacino and Anthony Hopkins in the upcoming English-language thriller BEYOND DECEIT, coming to theaters next year. To top it all off, Lee suited up for MEMORIES OF THE SWORD, a Korean martial arts drama that made its local debut back in August. And he’s done it all in the aftermath of a blackmail scandal that concluded in January.

This guy’s got hustle. Rounding out twenty fifteen for the Korean movie star, comes, hot off the presses, is THE INSIDE MEN. Released November 19 in South Korea, the film stars Lee as, per KDramaStars, “a political gangster,” who alongside a character portrayed by Baek Yoon Sik, “work for the rich and powerful, brokering secret deals” via both a corrupt newspaper and shady business agreements.

Lee and Baek are joined by a politician, working with the partners in crime to become President. Of course, things, as they tend to do in these flicks, hardly go as planned, and all manner of mayhem is likely on the menu. Additional members of THE INSIDE MAN’s cast include Cho Seung-woo and Bae Seong-woo.

INSIDE MEN is based on a webtoon (a type of online comic book that has become popular in South Korea), NAEBOOJADEUL, created by Yoon Tae-ho. The film adaptation has already earned a favorable notice from Wong Ho-jung of The Korea Herald. Won calling the film “a scathing, absorbing work,” and noting that “Lee… shines through — so much that even the unforgiving Korean online crowd has praised his acting in early reviews.” Be it scandal or jet lag, nothing is stopping Lee Byung-hun these days.

Box Office News

LEE Byeong-heon 이병헌 | 李炳憲 finds box office redemption as Inside Men 내부자들 excommunicated The Priests 검은 사제들 and nabbed a huge opening in South Korea this weekend.

The political thriller earned ₩13.2 billion (US$11.4 million) from 1.61 million admissions over four days. It accounted for 53.2% of the weekend's total box office revenue.

Based on a comic book, Inside Men is about the battle between a corrupted politician, a prosecutor and a political henchman looking for revenge. The Showbox Corp 쇼박스 release was one of the two films starring Lee that was delayed following a blackmail scandal involving the actor late last year. The other release, period action drama Memories of the Sword 협녀: 칼의 기억, was a major box office flop when it was released in August.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 opened in third place, earning ₩3.37 billion (US$2.91 million) from 439,000 admissions over five days. The film was released locally by Lotte Entertainment 롯데엔터테인먼트.

Last year, The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 earned ₩3.69 billion (US$3.18 million) from 480,000 admissions over four days and made ₩6.40 billion (US$5.52 million) from 854,000 admissions during its theatrical run.

American civil rights drama Freedom opened in sixth place, earning ₩259 million (US$223,000) from 35,200 admissions on 117 screens over four days.

The Priests saw a week-on-week decline of 55.8% as it dropped to second place, earning ₩3.85 billion (US$3.32 million) from 488,000 admissions between Friday and Sunday. The supernatural thriller has made ₩35.0 billion (US$30.2 million) from 4.45 million admissions.

Spectre dropped to fourth place, earning ₩1.72 billion (US$1.49 million) from 211,000 admissions between Friday and Sunday, suffering a week-on-week decline of 74.3%. The James Bond film has made ₩13.1 billion (US$11.3 million) from 1.66 million admissions.

Two major local releases starring up-and-coming young actresses go head-to-head next week: period music drama The Sound of a Flower 도리화가 | 桃李花歌 (With Architecture 101 건축학개론 (2012)'s Suzy BAE 배수지 | 裴秀智) and comedy You Call It Passion 열정 같은 소리 하고 있네 (with A Werewolf Boy 늑대소년 (2012)'s PARK Bo-yeong 박보영 | 朴寶英). Crimson Peak and The Boy and the Beast バケモノの子 are also opening.
