Kim Go-eun, Kim Hye-soo team up in Coin Locker Girl
by awcoconuts | May 7, 2014 |

KimGoEun_KimHyeSoo1.jpg

Well, this casting news is exciting. The movie Coin Locker Girl is about a baby girl who is left in a coin-operated storage locker in a subway station, and is discovered and raised by members of the shady underworld. Its initial setting is the same as Coin Locker Babies, the 1980 Ryu Murakami cyberpunk novel, but the similarities end there; the latter (a US-film version of which has been languishing for the better part of a decade) is a dark tale about two baby boys left for dead in adjacent train station lockers — they survive and grow up in an orphanage, but are unable to escape their troubled upbringing.

That’s not to say that the Chungmuro film will be light and fluffy, but it’s probably safe to assume it won’t delve into the depths of despair the book did. Kim Go-eun, who shot to fame in 2012’s Eungyo and received multiple best new actress awards for her debut performance, is very close to being confirmed for the role of baby girl grown young lady. Her team said that barring the extraordinary, Kim Go-eun will be in the movie, and they are working out the final details. We saw her last in Monster, which was released a couple of months ago, and will see her next in the upcoming Memory of the Sword, with Lee Byung-heon and Jeon Do-yeon.

It will be the rising star’s first time working with veteran Kim Hye-soo (The Face Reader,God of the Workplace), an actress whom Kim Go-eun has mentioned in the past as a sunbae she would like to work with. The seasoned celebrity will play the leader of the underground loan sharks, who takes Kim Go-eun under her wing and is a charismatic mother figure. As she gets older, Kim Go-eun is given increasing responsibilities and assignments by her makeshift family — will she be able to break away from the unscrupulous activities she grew up around? Or will she be the successor to Kim Hye-soo’s Godmother-like baddie? We’ll have to watch to find out.

After finalizing the rest of its cast, Coin Locker Girl will begin filming this summer.

Veteran actress KIM Hye-soo has been cast and young starlet KIM Go-eun is almost confirmed for Coin Locker Girl, a new drama-thriller based on a 1980s Japanese novel. A baby is abandoned in a train station coin locker and raised by a loan shark enterprise madam. KIM Hye-soo, star of such films as Tazza: The High Rollers (2006), The Thieves (2012) and most recently last fall’s The Face Reader, will play the loan boss who raises the young child, eventually grooming her for a position in her organization. Featuring as the child will be KIM Go-eun, in her fourth feature role, following her breakout performance in 2012’s Eungyo, her recent turn in Monster and her upcoming supporting part in period blockbuster Memories of the Sword. The younger KIM has expressed her admiration for and desire to work with glamorous middle-aged actress. Formerly the assistant director for Ba:Bo (2008) and the screenwriter for last year’s thriller The Gifted Hands, HAN Jung-hee steps up to the megaphone for the first time with Coin Locker Girl. CJ will also show a 3D omnibus film “Mad, Sad, Bad” by three well-known names in the Korean industry, Ryoo Seung-wan (“No Blood, No Tears”), Han Ji-seung (“Papa”) and Kim Tae-yong (“Late Autumn”).
Lotte’s Cannes lineup includes “The Pirates,” an epic set in 14th century Korea; another historical piece, “The Fatal Encounter,” about a murderous plot in the royal palace during the Joseon Dynasty; “Memories of the Sword,” a Joseon period drama about revenge; “Man on High Heels,” about a cold-blooded detective who secretly desires a sex change; and “Manhole,” which features a serial killer who uses the sewer system to abduct his victims.
Showbox’s lineup includes: “A Hard Day,” a thriller about a detective who buries his car accident victim in the same coffin as his mother; historical epic “Kundo: Age of the Rampant”; “Gangnam Blues,” introduced at the Hong Kong FilMart; “The Divine Move,” a noir actioner about professional gamblers; and “We Are Brothers,” a comedy about a Korean-born American adoptee who finds his biological family.

Rookie actresses torn between ‘nude and success’

A rising number of Korean films are starring new actresses who are ready for anything -- not least, complete nude exposure and lovemaking scenes.

The trend was heralded by the immense success of the hit movie “Eungyo (2012),” an R-rated romance starring star actor Park Hae-il and a completely new face, Kim Go-eun. The rookie actress played the 17-year-old schoolgirl Eungyo who inspires love in an old, revered author.

The official poster of film "Eungyo."

Kim, a nobody before starring in “Eungyo,” became a Cinderella overnight, nabbing nine new actress awards. Since then, there has been a constant production of R-rated films starring rookie heroines.
Then came “Obsessed (2014)” and “Scarlet Innocence (2014),” with the similar formula as “Eungyo.” These two R-rated films cast top male actors and young, unknown actresses who fall in love against social norms.

“Obsessed” casts actor Song Seung-hun and rookie actress Im Ji-yeon as the general and nurse of the same military camp. Both married, the two fall in passionate love despite a tragic end. Similarly, “Scarlet Innocence” stars top actor Jung Woo-sung and rookie actress Esom. While both films failed to achieve success, the two actresses gained instant fame. Im, for instance, won several new actress awards for the role.

The Korean film scene is expecting the launch of three more R-rated films this year, which all cast new actresses who will play the lead or supporting roles including sex scenes. “The Age of Innocence,” “The Treacherous Courtier” and “A Man and A Woman” are holding on to the “nude rookie actress” formula, and will launch this year.

Star actor-filmmaker Ha Jung-woo’s next film, “Agassi (working title),” will also stick to this nude-rookie formula. The movie’s director, Park Chan-wook, even vowed to cast new face actresses who are up to “any” nude acting.

The “rookies going nude” trend is caused by the star actresses’ unwillingness to expose their nude in films, fearing that it will deteriorate the reputation of both the movie and themselves. They also fear that the nude acting can mislead the viewers into thinking that the actresses intend to cover up their poor acting skills with sex scenes.

“Most actresses agree that nude scenes should be allowed in and for the movies,” local media outlet Sports DongA reported, citing a movie expert. “But nude acting can bring a harsher review of that film, not to mention that it can bring down their reputation as actors.”

But the Korean movie industry offers few opportunities to the new faces, except the parts with nude exposure, the report said, citing undisclosed agency members.

“Almost all commercial movies that seek new actresses involve nude exposure,” an emerging actress told Sports DongA under condition of anonymity.

“(The filmmakers) often complain that they cannot find excellent rookies, but the truth is, there is no environment to produce diverse acting talents,” she added.
