'Pirates' almost manages to hold water

Son Ye-jin plays the female pirate ship captain Ye-wol in this summer's highly anticipated flick"Pirates", which serves up as much romance and comedy as it does action.

When it comes to pirate-themed movies, one dominant feature springs to mind: Disney's megahit adventure series "Pirates of the Caribbean".

Since 2004, the four installments have won worldwide recognition for their logical plots, compelling characters and humorous scenes.

So the question is, can any movie about the adventures of buccaneers compete with the infamous Captain Jack Sparrow and crew?

In "Pirates", director Lee Seok-hoon makes an ambitious bid to depict intense swordplay between the pirates, bandits and royal forces both at sea and on dry land. They are on a search for the missing guksae, or the state seal. 

Despite the skeptical outlook expressed by some critics about this particular genre being taken on in Korea, "Pirates" has turned out to be a family-friendly adventure flick loaded with a tremendous amount of comedy. 

The plot inevitably follows a similar template to the "Caribbean" series, where the story line is strongly driven by a search for something with much honor or money at stake. 

While the fountain of youth is the object of desire in the Hollywood blockbuster's latest installment, in"Pirates", it is the guksae that is swallowed by a giant whale on its way back from Ming-dynasty China, which endowed the seal to the newly founded Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910).

As the great seal symbolizes the authority of a new royal family, government troops and groups of outlaws from both the seas and the mountains gather to find the mysterious whale and the guksae that is likely resting inside its stomach.

The pirate clan is led by the female captain Ye-wol, played by Son Ye-jin, who is taking up such a role for the first time in her career. 

However, although she is the only prominent female character in the film, her acting comes across as mediocre and bland.

While it is true that Son does not interfere with the natural flow of the plot line or the performances of the other actors, her strong image as a "queen of rom-com" means that some of her action scenes lacked a certain splendor both visually and spiritually. 

Against Son, actor Kim Nam-gil, who was also attempting his first goofy role by acting as the leader of the mountain bandits, mincing character Jang Sa-jeong stood out in terms of the ease in which he played his part. 

As Kim admitted to seeing relatively many similarities between himself and Sa-jeong compared to the previous downcast bad boy characters he has taken on, he manages to deliver the free-spirited yet righteous Sa-jeong well. 

Last but not least, maverick actor Yoo Hae-jin touts his brilliance at comical acting as Cheol-bong, who transfers his allegiance from the pirates to the bandits due to his serious seasickness. 

While the premise of the character itself is very off-beat, Cheol-bong's intense mumbling and grumbling coupled with having to fiercely compromise with a reality that often emasculates his character was something that only Yoo could have pulled off. When he's on the screen alone he's just too hilarious. 

Overall, whether or not it's because expectations were low, the film wasn't too disappointing in the end.

One key issue, however, is that the film's excessive focus on the comedic scenes that are scattered throughout the movie might have overshadowed its macroscopic narrative. But "Pirates" is definitely worth the time and money to watch either with friends, family or lovers just to laugh unconditionally. 

After all, that's what the life of leisure should be about. 

The film opens Aug. 6.

Actress Lee Min Jung and boy group, 2AM’s Im Seulong took a selfie together at the “Pirates” VIP screening.
On July 29, Lee Min Jung uploaded the photo on her Instagram along with a message that said, “At the ‘Pirates’ screening with Seulong.”


On the same day, the screening of “Pirates” was held at the Seoul Lotte Cinema. After getting married to actor, Lee Byung Hun, it seems like Lee Min Jung got prettier.
Lee Min Jung and Im Seulong worked on a drama theater called, “Lunch Box” in 2010 and both are close friends with the actress, Son Ye Jin. Lee Min Jung and Son Ye Jin are labelmates while Im Seulong and Son Ye Jin appeared together in the drama, “Personal Taste.”
Meanwhile, 2AM will be performing at the “2014 JYP NATION-ONE MIC,” that will be held on August 9 in Seoul.

Comedy 'Pirates' Takes on Naval War Hero

At a time when Korean cinemas have been virtually taken over by period blockbuster "The Admiral: Roaring Currents", the comedy "Pirates" has managed to get off a great start.

The film was released on Wednesday, and 272,858 people saw it in the first two days, taking it to second place at the box office.

Industry insiders worried that "Pirates" would be completely overshadowed by "The Admiral: Roaring Currents", but the humor seems to work for audiences.

Although both are period films, "Pirates" is a funny fusion of the traditional and modern styles.

The 25-day number one streak of “Roaring Currents” has finally ended with the victory of the new film “Pirates.”

The box office records as of August 23 revealed that on August 22, “Pirates” gathered a total of 182,481 viewers, taking the number one spot. The cumulative number for the film is recorded at 5,159,231 views so far.

On the other hand, “Roaring Currents” has already put down a series of one record after the other. It had never lost the number one spot to another film in the 25 days since its release on July 30.

This victory by “Pirates” is a surprising one, as many have predicted this to be the least successful out of the four that had been anticipated before their releases: “Kundo” (starring Ha Jung Woo and Kang Dong Won), “Roaring Currents” (starring Choi Min Shik, Ryu Seung Ryong, and Jo Jin Woong), “Sea Fog” (starring Kim Yoon Seok and Park Yoochun), and “Pirates” (starring Kim Nam Gil and Son Ye Jin). But as good reviews spread among viewers, they got their chance to surpass the records of “Roaring Currents.”

Released two weeks after “Roaring Currents,” “Pirates” maintained a viewership difference of approximately 200,000 behind “Roaring Currents” as of last week. Entering into its third week after release, “Pirates” narrowed the difference to 67,712 on August 18 (Monday), to 48,938 on August 19 (Tuesday), 20,617 on August 20 (Wednesday), and finally around 10,000 on August 21 (Thursday), before finally surpassing “Roaring Currents” on Friday, August 22.

The film will open in New York City on September 12th. So I went to fandango.com to check out the time of the showings. And up popped The Pirates! Band of Misfits! a 2012 animated kids film.  So people will be bringing their kids thinking it is a children's film and the kids will not be able to read subtitles. So that is a mess!  I commented on their 'feedback" page, but who knows if anyone reads that. I went to watch the "Pirates" today September 12th. Let me share with all of you that IT IS A MUST WATCH!! It is so hilarious. I laughed so hard from beginning to end. I would watch it again. There are many action scenes so I didn't have to concentrate on subtitle so much. The only thing that I miss is Kim Nam Gil and Son Ye Jin didn't have a lot of screen times together like in Shark. I hope they have a romantic film together
