New Trend Among Idol-Actors: Historical Dramas

Even the most talented actors sometimes feel burdensome acting in a historical drama due to its particular tone of speech and difficult vocabulary. Moreover, many actors and actresses find it challenging to understand historical characters and portray their personalities and stories through his or her own reinterpretation.

However, some idol-actors and actresses are garnering much attention by voluntarily accepting the challenges. miss A‘s SuzyKara‘s Han Seung Yeon, and2AM‘s Im Seulong are all partaking in upcoming historical dramas. First, Suzy is starring in upcoming MBC drama “Gu Family Book” as Lee Seung Gi‘s partnering role. “Gu Family Book” is a comic martial arts action drama about Choi Gang Chi, who was born a half-man, half-beast, struggling to become a human.

In the drama, Suzy plays the role of martial arts trainer Dam Yeo Ul, who sports better martial arts skills than any other man at her gym. Through this character, Suzy will transform from her usual innocent-looking girl image to a charismatic female warrior. In the recently revealed trailer of “Gu Family Book,” Suzy flaunts her sword-handling skills in a blue martial arts outfit and a top knot.

Kara’s Han Seung Yeon will be starring in SBS “Jang Ok Jung,” rivaling Suzy in the same time slot, starting on the same day. “Jang Ok Jung” aims at portraying Jang Hee Bin, who is historically known as a femme fatale with evil and selfish intentions and ambitions, as a fashion designer in Joseon Dynasty. In “Jang Ok Jung,” Jang Ok Jung starts out her career in the palace as a designer who makes apparels and beddings for the royal family.

Han Seung Yeon plays the role of Sookbin Choi, who enters the palace as a maid for the royal family and ends up being one of the most powerful concubines in the palace with her son as the king. She meets and gets help from Jang Ok Jung (played by Kim Tae Hee) as Queen In Hyun’s maid, but later becomes a villain and sides with Queen In Hyun to drive Jang Ok Jung to the corner.

2AM’s Im Seulong, who’s already been in drama “Personal Taste” and film “26 Years,” is cast in upcoming KBS drama “The Fugitive of Joseon” to play Prince Lee Ho, who is unable to trust anybody and lives in anxiety because he has been getting death threats since the moment he was born. He will be in conflict with his stepmother Queen Moon Jung (played by Park Ji Young), who will do anything and everything it takes to make her biological son and Lee Ho’s half-brother Prince Kyungwon the King.

The biggest reason why idols challenge themselves by taking roles in historical dramas is to prove that they got what it takes to be actors and actresses. Although many idols expand their comfort zone to acting, the public’s reception of the transition isn’t all welcoming since idols often get their roles not based on their acting skills, but based on the size of their fandom and popularity. While some idols successfully prove that they are as talented as other actors, the other unfortunate ones get sharp criticisms on their lack of talent in acting. Even if an idol-actor or actress proves his or her talent in acting, it is really difficult to get rid of the “idol” name from his or her title.

Another big reason for idol-actors and actresses to delve into historical acting is to change their public image. As idols, they appear mostly on music and variety entertainment programs to promote themselves and their songs. As a result, they are perceived as lighthearted, young, and showy. By wearing traditional costumes instead of extravagant stage outfits and speaking in series and dignified manners in historical dramas, these idol-actors and actresses are trying to show a different side of themselves to the public and fans.

Han Seung Yeon voice her hopes to appeal a different side of her at the recent press conference of “Jang Ok Jung.” She said, “The public sees me as this cheerful girl and because everyone expects that of me, I’ve had some hard time keeping up with that delightful, bright, always-smiling character. However, I hope to show everyone that I’ve got different sides and characters within me through this challenge of historical drama.”

An anonymous official of the broadcasting industry commented, “For any actor, historical dramas are like double-edged swords. It could work in one’s advantage, showing his or her talent. But as a genre, it’s difficult to digest, which means bigger risks and more chance at getting criticized if they do anything wrong. Since it’s the first time for all three of them–Suzy, Han Seung Yeon, and Im Seulong–to act in a historical drama, it’d be interesting to see what kind of reviews they receive from the public and critics.”

I thought that I'd post in this thread when the first episode come out but I just can't wait anymore! Been stalking this thread since several weeks ago and planning to watch it initially because of Hong Soo Hyun, but the highlights made me impatient to see the drama and all the characters!
Thanks for all the updates and I think this can be a small contribution to this thread..I've been reading the biographies and found some interesting facts about the historical figures :)
Spoiler Alert!

  • King Sukjong, portrayed by Yoo Ah-in in the drama, was born in 1661, making him two years younger than Lady Jang (Kim Tae-hee). In real life, Kim Tae-hee is six years older than Yoo Ah-in.
  • Queen Inhyun (Hong Soo-hyun) was younger than King Sukjong by six years but Hong Soo-hyun is actually five years Yoo Ah-in’s senior.
  • Prince Dongpyeong (Lee Sang-yeob)’s name can only be found in the Korean sources so I had to hunt a bit for his biography. He was King Injo’s grandson from his son with Deposed Lady Jo / Jo Gwi-in and that made him a cousin once removed or cousin uncle to Sukjong.
  • Lady Jang became a lady-in-waiting in the same year of Lady Choi / Choi Suk-bin (Han Seung-yeon)’s birth, which was 1670. Han Seung-yeon is only eight years Kim Tae-hee’s junior. I’m not sure whether we will see Lady Jang become a lady-in-waiting in the drama or not.
  • Jang Hyun (Sung Dong-il), the man responsible in making Lady Jang to enter the palace, was her father’s cousin. Hence, he’s her cousin once removed, or her cousin uncle.
  • Queen Inhyun was actually King Sukjong’s second Queen Consort. His first Queen Consort, Queen Ingyung (Kim Ha-eun), died in 1680 and Sukjong married Inhyun one year after Ingyung’s death.
  • Queen Inhyun’s father Min Yoo-jung was the Minister of Defense.
  • Not sure if we’ll get to see this in the drama, but Queen Inhyun didn’t produce any heir for Sukjong. Lady Jang and Lady Choi both bore a son each that would be the future King Kyungjong and King Yeongjo, respectively.

After watching the highlights, I realize that the drama reminds me of The Moon Embraces the Sun: young lovers, queens, kings, prince, palace, and political strife. But Jang Ok Jung has its own strength and I have high hopes that this will be decent, since it's a sageuk based on the history ^^
5 days until the premiere and here's hoping that this drama will be a good one! ;)

Kim Tae Hee VS Kim Hye Soo VS miss A′s Suzy: The Upcoming Mon-Tue Actress War

Kim Hye Soo′s KBS2 God of the Workplace has cut the tape on the upcoming three-sided actress big bang to take over the main channels′ Monday and Tuesday drama time slots.

MBC′s Gu Family Book and SBS′ Jang Ok Jung will be coming up in a week, pitching miss A′s Suzy and Kim Tae Hee against each other and Kim Hye Soo for the top actress spot of Monday and Tuesday.

God of the Workplace aired its first episode on April 1, with Kim Hye Soo managing to garner praise for her mix of serious expressions, unique tone of voice and her own brand of charisma to perfect her character.

She definitely proved she hadn′t been in the acting scene for 27 years for nothing, as she showed there was more to her than her looks.

An official from God of the Workplace commented, "Some say we′re at a disadvantage, but Kim Hye Soo′s seasoned acting skills definitely surpass the others. We′re sure of that."

The drama managed to draw fairly good ratings against the last few episodes of SBS′ Yawang, getting around eight percent in viewership ratings according to AGB Nielsen Media Research. It is being seen as a fairly good start, as producers have frequently said the first two episodes prove the biggest test as they need to succeed in establishing the drama′s characters.

Gu Family Book and Jang Ok Jung, however, will prove to be giant contenders.

Suzy of Gu Family Book was the one that caused a giant ′first love′ syndrome last year, and is supported by a fanbase full of passionate fans in their teens and 20s. Her drama will also be helped along by the appearance of her ever-popular co-star Lee Seung Gi.

Kim Tae Hee, in the other corner, is one of those actresses who has survived long in the business with a core fanbase, drawn to her timeless looks. The familiar name of Jang Hee Bin and the drama′s genre are expected to put Jang Ok Jungat the top with the biggest advantage.

Suzy and Kim Tae Hee, however, have often been riddled with controversies about their acting skills, which are this time more causes for concern as they will be acting in period pieces.

One official said, "It seems Kim Hye Soo′s seasoned acting, Kim Tae Hee′s looks and Suzy′s fresh image will clash. Gu Family Book and Jang Ok Jung are at an advantage because they′re period pieces, but the actresses of the two dramas will have to pass a bigger test with higher expectations on their acting."
