A pretty good article in commemoration of Shinhwa's 15th Anniversary. I love how they title the post, On the Road.... meaningful and pun intended from Shinhwa's The Return album :D

2013.03.24 (x)clusive!: On the Road with Shinhwa for 15 years

shc2.jpg?

March 24, 2013
marks the fifteen-year anniversary of Shinhwa. With a total of fifteen full albums, and countless other titles under their belt (including the longest-running boy band in South Korea, the original variety-dols and beastly-dols), Shinhwa has proven to live up to their name as they embarked on their tenth concert tour. In light of their anniversary and upcoming comeback, let’s take a walk through the milestones of this legendary group.

The Debut

shinhwa01.jpg

March 24, 1998. Six teenage boys donned in over-sized shirts and pants stepped onto stage for the first time, waiting to take the music industry by storm. Eric Mun, Lee Min Woo, Kim Dong Wan, Shin Hye Sung, Jun Jin and Andy Lee were eager teens waiting to win the hearts of young fans like their seniors H.O.T and S.E.S did.

Instead, what awaited them was a year of hardship. While The Resolver did achieve moderate success by effectively roping in a group of fans, the profit from this album was in the red, having spent more money than they had earned. It did not help that their follow up song Eusha Eusha brought in controversy for being a happy-no-go song, with the beach as a backdrop during the period when Korea was experiencing their worst ever flood, criticizing them for promoting such a song during a sensitive time.

Of New Beginnings

2thenewbeginning1.jpg

After a ‘not so successful’ first album, the boys faced the cruel possibility of having to disband. With a new-found determination, Shinhwa set out on the preparations for their new album. With little help from the company, they handled everything themselves, bringing in composers and lyricists. After all, their second album was a make or break situation.  Selling over 370,000 physical copies, the title track T.O.P was their first song to have won the number one spot on music shows.

T.O.P is the track that let us feel we’ve found Shinhwa’s color for the first time. If this album didn’t make it on the charts, we probably would have given up and returned home.”
- Shinhwa, 120328 Radio Star

The Original Beastly Idols

3originalbeastlyidols1.jpg

From their third album onwards, Shinhwa started having more mature concepts. In ‘Only One’, which was also another song that topped the charts (which went on to become Shinhwa’s first album to top the charts), the boys were seen dancing topless. And in their fourth album ‘Hey, Come On’, Shinhwa participated in a nude photoshoot, becoming the first and only Korean boy band to ever release such a photobook, with all 10,000 copies of this limited edition sold out, proving the group’s popularity.

“Never-changing Line-up” & Guerilla Concert

shinhwa04.jpg

As the one of the boy bands that has not undergone any changes in member line-up despite the number of years in the industry, Shinhwa promoted without member Andy during their fourth album as Andy’s mother had fallen ill. In addition, Andy was involved in a suicide controversy, a misunderstanding arising from his excessive drinking coupled with taking of aspirins, in an attempt to ‘curb’ depression at that time.

The band’s participation in the 2001 television program Guerilla Concert remains to be one of their most well-known events to their fans. With only five members, the boys shed tears when they hit their target, as they thanked their fans. The members also took the chance and did a shout-out to their missing member, and Andy admitted years later that he was moved to tears when watching the concert on TV, and stated ‘friendship’ for the reason of his return.
“If only Andy could be with us. Andy, we’ll be together forever.”
-Minwoo, Guerilla Concert

Staying or Leaving

Their sixth album ‘Wedding’ officially marked them as the longest running boy band in South Korea. However, Shinhwa ran into their second disbandment crisis as their contracts with SM were coming to an end. Receiving different contracts, the boys were faced with a tough decision: to stay with SM as soloists, or to remain as one by leaving SM?

“There were 2-3 contracts offers with Eric’s price being 4 times higher than our price. We were aware of that too. Each of us was priced differently by management companies. Even though other members did made sacrifices, Eric made the biggest sacrifice. He had to bring down his price to 3 times lesser than his own price. That’s why, the fact that the 6 of us are able to stay together now, Eric contributed a lot to it.”
-Kim Dong Wan, 080209 OBS – Korea’s Idol Group Shinhwa

However, the move wasn’t without its fair share of troubles. Just before Shinhwa signed on with Good Entertainment, member Shin Hye Sung released a full-length album with SM artistes Lee Ji Hoon and Kangta under the unit ‘Group S’. If any, the release only served to bring about panic amongst the fans as the idea of disbandment reigns near.

“Group S are my friends, but Shinhwa is family.”
-Shin Hye Sung

Even after signing on with Good Entertainment, the boys had to file a separate lawsuit in order to use their original name ‘Shinhwa’ and gain the rights to sing songs from their previous albums. Not only that, Shin Hye Sung’s disappearance from the press conference, that addressed their move, had also ignited rumors about members’ discord, which was of course, proven to be untrue later on.

The Win for Fans

5thewinforfan0.jpg

Signing up with a new agency, Shinhwa made their comeback with an album, appropriately titled ‘Brand New’. Just as the whole world waited to watch them break, Shinhwa lived up to their name, ultimately winning their first ever album daesang at the Golden disk and MKMF (now renamed as MAMA).

Not expecting the win, the boys stood there oblivious to their win as their names were repeated three times, before slowly realizing they had actually won the grand prize. After the win, Shinhwa showed their appreciation to the fans, opting to meet their fans first before going to the scheduled press conference.

Branching into Solo

6branchingtosolo1.jpg

Shinhwa was also the first idol group that had members doing solo activities while the group is still active. Starting with Lee Min Woo in 2003, the other members gradually went into their solo careers in 2005. Besides Eric, the rest had released an album; besides Shin Hye Sung, all other members had delved into acting before.

Among the members, lead vocalist Shin Hye Sung had a more successful solo singing career, winning several Bonsangs. On the other hand, Eric had a relatively active acting and modelling solo career, winning MBC Best Actor and SBS Best Actor award in 2005 and 2006 respectively. Other members also delved into different areas such as Kim Dong Wan who hosted a radio show, Andy who tried emceeing and various musical projects, and Jun Jin who tackled the variety sector.

Birth of Shinhwa Changjos – a Love-Hate relationship

7birthofshcj0.jpg

The relationship between Shinhwa Changjos (SHCJ) and Shinhwa has always been an interesting one. Being together for nearly fifteen years, SHCJ did their best to live up to their name: creating legends.

All too often, fandoms have heard of the many hilarious stories between SHCJs and Shinhwa; the time when a fan painted her face white and drew heavy eyeliner to imitate Dongwan’s getup during the ‘Yo!’ period at a fansign and another occasion when the boys chided their fans for losing a debate with G.O.D fans, are just some of the tidbits on an endless list.

“Shinhwa isn’t responsible for your lives.”
- Dongwan
Yet, the fans that sometimes get into arguments with their oppas and are bold enough to point out the boys’ flaws as they deemed fit, are also one of the strongest and most loyal fandom. Strongly protecting the colour orange for the last fifteen years, helping the boys pull through their toughest times, believing and always waiting, supporting the boys in their many little ways, SHCJs have also created their own legends alongside Shinhwa, such as being the first fandom to donate rice wreaths to support their idols.

In return, Shinhwa kept their promises, returning to the music scene last year as a complete group after fulfilling their military duties. The song ‘On the Road’ from their latest album is also one of the many songs dedicated to their orange princesses for their never-ending continuous support.

“The day we separate is not decided by us. As long as you (fans) are here, the fantastic performances and good albums that we will do has become our mission”
— Eric, Japan 2012.

The Legend and their Promise

8legendandpromise.png

2008, March 24-25. The six of them gathered in the orange-filled Olympic Park Gymnastics Stadium for their tenth anniversary concert, which also acted as the ‘goodbye’ stage as Shinhwa (with the exception of Shin Hye Sung, whose knee deemed him unfit for duty) would be serving their mandatory enlistment. Promising to return as six once more, the boys put on their best performance to the loud applause and cheers, as well as the promise from SHCJ that they’ll be waiting.

And so, the waiting game began as the members enlisted one after another.

The Return

9thereturn2.jpg

It took the boys four years to finally return to the limelight in 2012, with a brand new album and a brand new image. No longer the fresh faces or the young playful boys, the six returned as dashing men ready to take on the fierce competition in the booming K-pop scene.

Selling out their limited edition albums and tickets to their Asia tour, Shinhwa and SHCJs have realized their promises to each other.

“Compared to the past everyone looked more matured. But to me this is something that I’m happy about. Those that have been waiting for us the whole time, those that have grown up with us…the looks of those that have come back to us no matter how long we took, I think it’s beautiful. It’s an unforgettable concert, and one that I will remember for life.”
-Shin Hye Sung, Shinhwa Broadcast E06

Variety-dols

shinhwa-shinbang.jpg

Shinhwa has been acknowledged by idols and media alike as the original Variety-dols, a term coined with the rise of idols being active in the variety scene. Having ranked first as ‘Gods of Variety’ by Netizens, Shinhwa is unlike most of their peers and seniors where upholding an image is important; in fact, their ‘image’ has long been known to be that of unpredictability and down to Earth-ness.

The difference between Shinhwa and most idol groups lies in the fact that instead of having a residential representative in the variety sector, all members have been active in the Variety circle – of course with Jun Jin being recognized as the most active with his participation as a member of Infinity Challenge, and Andy’s participation as a permanent member of New X-man.

As a group, Shinhwa has made a name for themselves in early TV programs such as Shinhwa X-files, X-man, even having their own season of Love Letter. And in 2012, the boys became the first group to have their very own variety programme on channel jTBC, in which they are both the hosts and participants, Shinhwa Broadcast. Having just ended its first run with 49 episodes, the next season is expected to run sometime in April.

The Legend Continues…

shinhwa-last.jpg

Successfully wrapping up the two-day concerts on 16 and 17 March 2013 at the Olympic Park Gymnastics Stadium, Shinhwa continues to show that they are still on top of the game by selling out the tickets. With plans on unveiling their new album sometime in April and embarking on their Asia tour before rounding it off with an encore concert in August, the boys will also be kept busy with the second season of their very own variety show – which till today, has been the only variety show hosted and revolved around an idol group in South Korea – Shinhwa broadcast.

Seems like the 15th year is only another mark as the legend continues…

“SHCJ must always receive love and protection from Shinhwa. Shinhwa will continue to stay together for SHCJ.”
– Minwoo, 15th Anniversary Concert

“In the beginning, in order to become singers, we debuted as Shinhwa. But now, in order to remain as Shinhwa, we continue promoting as singers.”
– Eric

“Without Shinhwa Changjo, we are nothing.”
– Minwoo

2013.03.21 Lesson Learned from 15-Year Group Shinhwa

image

Uniting through teamwork “The Legend Continues”

  • Idol group Shinhwa that has debut for 15 years
  • Consideration, giving way is the source of strength behind being the longest-running
  • Thinking of “us” before “me” even while having solo activities
  • Even their fan club “Shinhwa Changjo” gives advice instead of blindly loving

When you think about it, there are few things harder than preserving the status quo. If you fall at the top you’ll drop into a slump; if you’re lucky, you can even dream of getting a taste of heaven. Counting on 101% of passion as compared to 1% of luck, carving a path out to stay at the top through the power of effort, by knowing how to be nervous instead of being satisfied. Because we and they themselves know that it’s a daunting process, so Shinhwa carries the meaning of “legend” in it. This year is their 15th year. They came back as Shinhwa last year, and with the number 15, they held a celebratory solo concert recently, titled “The Legend Continues”. Isn’t it scary. The ‘determination to preserving the status quo’, that they will “continue” remaining on that impressive peak named “legend”.

- Teamwork is like air

When asked on the key to being the longest-running idol group, Shinhwa gave a very obvious answer, “teamwork”. As what photographer Jo Seon Hee, who shot Shinhwa’s concert poster, recently wrote on her Twitter, “the source of strength behind Shinhwa going on for a long time is giving way and consideration.”

Their twenties was hot-blooded to the extent that even Shinhwa didn’t have a day where they didn’t quarrel. “Why would we not have had big or small conflicts?” It was because they have the “commendable thought” to think of Shinhwa as a whole that they are able to become friendly once more. The current Shinhwa is made because they think of each other as perfect complements, whether it is leader Eric, who “resolves the members’ troubles”, or Lee Minwoo, who “is understanding of everything, like a magnanimous person”, or Kim Dongwan, who “thinks of himself as the atmosphere maker when the members are feeling down” etc. As Eric said, “if you think of the immediate profits, you are bound to think of yourself before the team, but if you think of teamwork as an existence like air, then it’ll be easy.”

The teamwork that Shinhwa explained is like a lesson to the idol groups that have just debuted. When compared with the music industry when Shinhwa promoted, recently, the teams that you have to compete against and the schedules you have to complete has increased to the extent where it is incomparable. Just like music charts that change in a day, the reality is that there are many teams that debut and disappear without anyone knowing.

That’s why the recent idol groups also stress on team management. Whether it is having a time to talk once every week, or regularly changing room mates, etc, these are the first steps taken in order to continue on for a long time together. An idol group’s leader said to Sports Seoul, “there have been many times where we’ve felt hurt because of the constantly changing emotions during our busy schedules,” adding “it is only the initial stage where it is difficult, after getting on the right track, the next time, we develop into a group that understands each other even just by looking at each other’s gaze. That is what I felt as I looked at Shinhwa sunbaes.”

- Standing by the principle, Shinhwa first, then solo

When speaking of a “legend” it might give a feeling of being immersed in past reputation but for Shinhwa, they are even active in their solo promotions, not losing out to the current idol groups. Lee Minwoo and Shin Hyesung shows off charisma that they couldn’t within the team through their solo activities. Eric and Kim Dongwan have secured their places as actors and Junjin and Andy have been seen in a new light through variety programs like MBC’s “Infinity Challenge” and “We Got Married”.

In groups where members juggle between “separate and together” activities, Shinhwa’s experience can once again be verified. Otherwise, would a program (general entertainment channel JTBC’s ‘Shinhwa Broadcast’) that only uses them to create laughter and joy be born?

Where can the secret to that be found? Shinhwa only concentrated on solo activities in 2004, a few years after they debut, when they swept the 3 major music daesangs. A representative from Shinhwa Company said, “Even though at that time, it wasn’t an era where ‘acting-idols’ were readily accepted, it was good enough to carry out solo activities,” further explaining, “thanks to them standing by the ‘first Shinhwa, then OO’ principle, they seemed to have gotten even better chances.”

Nowadays, in the music industry, it is not uncommon to focus on individual activities even before the team’s name is made known. It is, by nature, a way to survive amidst intense competition. Occasionally, you see instances where the popularity gained by one or a few people spills over into the team’s popularity.

Some stress that even under such circumstances, the focus should still be on “proper promotions”. A music company’s CEO said, “because the market now makes it very easy and quick for people to debut, so to capture the general public’s attention in a short time, it became such that solo activities are carried out at the same time.” Adding on, he stressed, “But no matter how the times have changed, the attitude that current idol groups should learn is what Shinhwa has shown, the determination to run all the way towards their true dream.”

- Never-changing, Shinhwa’s unique colours

When speaking of Shinhwa, who has debut for 15 years, an existence that cannot be missed out on is the fandom. Just like what Shinhwa says, “now they hold on to the hands of their children and come to the concert venue”, the “teenage fans” from more than 10 years ago have now become a mother of a family and a wife of a man.

The name of Shinhwa’s official fan club is “Shinhwa Changjo”. Their cohesion shown during the recent solo concert does not lose out to the fandom of current idols. They are, as named, the ones who ‘created (changjo)’ the unshakeable Shinhwa now.

A representative from Shinhwa Company said, “our fans, unlike the fans of other groups, does not just blindly loves”, and “within boundaries of affection, they would tell us this is right, this is wrong, and give clear advice.” He added, “it seems like because the members actively accommodates to that, so there is a deep and trusting relationship between the star and the fans”, adding, “the pride that Shinhwa Changjo feels is amazing”.

Actually, to the fans, the “pride as a person who likes Shinhwa” was built up thanks to Shinhwa’s efforts. From the debut song “Haegyulsa” till last year’s 10th album’s title song “Venus”. Apart from one ballad title song (in 2006), they have never given up on their trademark intense synchronized dance performance. The secret to Shinhwa, whose average age is 35 years old, still being seen as idols is their joke-like determinations, such as “we can’t look like ahjusshis”, “let’s make sure that not even a mustache mark can be seen” etc.

A representative from JTBC, who has observed them for more than a year through ‘Shinhwa Broadcast’ said, “occasionally, when we invite current idols in as guests, I really feel how much Shinhwa’s stamina and mental age has become younger”, and revealed “it seems like because of how much they work hard, that’s why their 15-year fandom can grow healthily too.”

It's hard to pick only one favorite song from Shinhwa T.T
But I always get goosebumps every time I hear Brand New. It sounds as epic and glorious and confident as Shinhwa is, totally a song that represent the greatness that is Shinhwa!  MV is creative too, dance, everything *sigh*

They had so many good songs. Everything was catchy and represented Shinhwa. TOP is my absolute all time favorite (the first Shinhwa song i ever heard) with Destiny of Love second because every time I hear it it gives me goosebumps. And the lyrics capture the long lasting friendship they have which I absolutely love. On the Road is beautiful. I love how its for the fans. And Brand New and Venus are comeback songs that had energy and were visually amazing. Ugh. Too many to spazz over.

not done with Shinhwa's 15th B-day post yet!  Here's 1 more :P

2013.03.18 Defying Shelf Life

 130318_p01_defying.jpg
Shinhwa

Boy band turns 15 years old

K-pop groups tend to sour faster than milk. So ''boy’’ band Shinhwa’s holding a lavish concert on the weekend in Seoul to celebrate 15 years of being together exuded equally a sense of accomplishment and the odd vibe of a centenarian’s birthday bash.

The six-member group ― consisting of Eric, Lee Min-woo, Kim Dong-wan, Shin Hye-sung, Jun Jin and Andy, now all in their mid-30s ― called their two-day performance at the Olympic Gymnastics Arena in eastern Seoul ''The Legend Continues.’’ The self-praise was justified when more than 25,000 fans showed up.

The thousands of teenage girls who queued at record shops to buy Shinhwa’s first album 15 years ago ― during a time when CDs were still relevant ― are now in their mid-to-late 20s or 30s. Many of them took their husbands to the band’s recent concert.

So how can Shinhwa’s longevity be explained in the cut-throat K-pop scene, run by a system that is ready to spit out young artists as quickly as it sucks them in?

As with other K-pop groups, Shinhwa is a highly manufactured product ― one of the earliest groups produced by SM Entertainment, which hit it big with Girls’ Generation ― and their music is as formulaic as the others.

Their members have been successful in showbiz areas beyond music, with Eric and Kim Dong-wan now established television actors and Jun Jin showing a talent for sketch comedy and as an emcee. But that doesn’t explain why Shinhwa remains an A-list act on the music scene.

Eric, the leader of the group, offers a simple explanation: The members just genuinely like working with each other. His description of Shinhwa is like that of a veteran football team where the players have played with each other long enough and the chemistry between them only gets better with time.

''Each member of Shinhwa has a different character. But I think this difference makes us more compatible ― when one member develops the passion to do one thing, the other members understand where he is coming from and know exactly how to help him,’’ Eric said.

''We had our share of trouble in the last 15 years. We had turbulence. But after 15 years, we are more brothers than work partners.’’

So will Shinhwa still be singing sugary tunes and showing off slick dance routines for another 15 years, by which some of its members will be approaching 50?  Eric matter-of-factly replied, ''Yes.’’

''We never discuss our future too seriously because we know that we will be together to the end in one way or another. We will continue to sing and dance until we are 50 or 60. Why not? We can’t beat Father Time, but as members of Shinhwa, we will always be the same,’’ Eric said.

Shinhwa debuted in 1998 under SM Entertainment, one of the nation's top entertainment companies. Their first album, "The Solver," struggled a little but the group took off with their second album, "T.O.P.’’

K-pop groups are expensive products. Members endure years of grueling singing lessons and dance training and require an army of assistants, choreographers and wardrobe designers. If a group gets off to a stumbling start or slides from its peak, the management company is usually quick to write them off and move on with a new group.

Shinhwa was a rare group that was able to survive after SM Entertainment refused to renew their contract after 2003. The agency wanted to selectively re-sign the more popular members, but the six instead decided to sign on with a new agency as a group. An ugly legal dispute with SM over the rights to use the name, Shinhwa, followed, but the group eventually got to retain the name.

The group went into hiatus as the members fulfilled their military duties from 2008 to 2011. Shinhwa resumed its music activities last year, when the group decided to establish their own entertainment company, Shinhwa Company, led by Eric and Min-woo with the other members as shareholders. Their 10th studio album, “The Return,” showed they are still popular as a group.

The 15th anniversary concert began with “Only One,” a song from their third album, and “Your Man” and continued through some 23 songs from their 10 albums. Fans raved at the sharp and agile dance moves of “Venus” and “Brand New” and enjoyed the newly arranged style of “How Do I Say” and “Shooting Star.”

The arena glowed with orange light sticks, the fan color for Shinhwa. As the audience chanted Shinhwa’s name and sang along to hit songs, the group expressed their gratitude toward “Shinhwa Changjo,” or their fans, openly. "We wouldn't be here for 15 years if it weren't for you. Please be proud of being Shinhwa fans," Eric said.

The group also revealed its future plans at the concert ― its 11th studio album will be released in late April and the group will go on an Asia concert tour in June to China, Japan and Hong Kong, with an encore in Seoul in August as the grand finale.

"When they sang 'Sharing Forever' from the first album, it immediately reminded me of my school days, when I was a middle school student and Shinhwa just debuted. I couldn't imagine myself coming to Shinhwa's concert when I'm 30, but I am so grateful that Shinhwa is still active and I am their fan," Choi Jin-sun said. "I wish to come to their 20th, 30th anniversary concerts, hopefully with my family then."

15 years is a long time especially in the kpop industry. I love them and I'm happy they are going to continue making music. I love their attitude too. They're not putting any pressure or acting like anyone other than themselves for the fans to love them. They are who they are. I'm reminded of that every time I see them.
