Korea's all-time movie attendance record broken this year Source: STARN News
20131130215732_5299e0bb64074_1.jpgAccording to Korea Film Council's statistic of 2013, 115,039,146 movie tickets were sold this year.
The highest number was 114,613,190 before this year's record came out.
In addition, the total number exceeded 100 million 47 days earlier than last year (November 20th).
The three films that made the biggest contributions in replacing the record are 'Gift of Seven Room', 'SNOWPIERCER', and 'The Face'. All of the three films had over 9 million attendances.
In addition, 'Berlin', 'Secret To Greatness', 'The Watchers', 'The Terror Live', and 'Hide & Seek' each had over 5 million attendances as well.
Meanwhile, 'IRON MAN 3' and 'World War Z' are the only two foreign films that made into TOP 10 films of the year in Korea. /Reporting by Lee Mi-Ji jp@starnnews.com

The year in moviesLooking back at the memorable works of 2013
By Yun Suh-young The Korea Times
Data shows that local theaters have sold a combined 210 million tickets, meaning that 2013 has been an unequivocal success for Korean cinema.
But while numbers may not lie, they rarely tell the whole story. This year’s growth in ticket sales have been driven by Korean films such as “Miracle in Cell No. 7,” “Snowpiercer” and “The Face Reader.” American blockbusters “World War Z” and “Iron Man 3” were the only foreign works to make it in the top-10 list of box office hits.
Many of the Korean films that succeeded this year were above-average in quality and they also represented a broader scope of genres. However, there is also a distance between above-average and great.
The class of 2013, as commercially successful as they were, can’t artistically compare to the class of 2003, which include Park Chan-wook’s “Old Boy,” Bong Joon-ho’s “Memories of Murder” and Jang Joon-hwan’s “Save the Earth.”
Aside from Snowpiercer, Bong’s Hollywood debut, and possibly “The Attorney,” the drama based on the late President Roh Moo-hyun during his days as a human rights lawyer, it’s hard to think of any Korean work released this year that will really resonate with moviegoers a few years down the road.
Inspired by real events
Observers say the movie industry has been benefitting as a form of cheap, escapist entertainment amid a sluggish economy. And it appears that filmmakers are becoming more attentive to financially hit moviegoers.
Efforts to include social commentary were seen everywhere, even in clumsy dramas such as Miracle No. 7, an unapologetic tearjerker about a mentally-ill father and his young daughter, was watched by 12 million moviegoers.
While Cell No. 7, the biggest hit of the year, was a provider of generic, store-brand criticism of society, Snowpiercer and “New World” offered more original, discomforting experiences.
Bong’s movie is a bleak story about a class system that evolves aboard a train, Snowpiercer, which travels around the nearly-dead Earth via a perpetual-motion engine.
The content of the movie, which drew differing opinions from critics, provided plenty of conversational material for politicians, pundits and civic activists as they took the film as critical commentary on Korea’s increasing social inequality.
New World was a stellar movie by director Park Hoon-jung, a mobster film that exposed the failures of Korea’s justice system and provided an intelligent look on how the hierarchical social culture influences the lives of individuals.
New World might have been remembered as the year’s best crime thriller if not for the brilliantly-made “The Berlin File,” a spy flick directed by martial arts devotee Ryu Seung-wan.
Han Suk-kyu starred as South Korean agent Jung Jin-su, who is engaged in the relentless pursuit of a North Korean agent and expert weapons-trader Pyo Jong-sung (Ha Jung-woo) with the bigger threat being political conspiracy from Pyongyang.
The movie sold more than 7 million tickets after its February release. One has to wonder whether the numbers would have been better if it had been released in the winter, considering how the shocking political developments in North Korea in the past month would have influenced the build-up.
“The Terror Live,” in which Ha plays a radio host pulled into a terror plot when a man threatens to blow up a Seoul bridge live on air, provided biting criticism of the media in the age of 24/7 coverage.
“Hide and Seek” and “Cold Eyes” were pure dramatic triumphs, keeping audiences on the edge of their seats with the strength of the plot, pace and editing.
The Attorney, “Way Back Home,” about a Korean housewife who was jailed in France for a couple of years on charges of transporting drugs, and “Jiseul,” based on the Jeju massacre of 1948, were the notable films of the year inspired by true events.
Talented rookie corps
It’s also notable that some of the year’s most memorable films such as New World, The Terror Live, Hide and Seek, and Cold Eyes represented cinematic debuts.
Huh just needed 2.5 billion won to make Hide and Seek, which garnered more than 5 million moviegoers at theaters. The movie is driven by the tension created by a mysterious homeless person who intrudes into the house of others and is an impressive display of Huh’s talent to dramatize fear and perverted desires.
Directors Joh Ui-seok and Kim Byeong-seo collaborated on Cold Eyes, which revolves around a police investigation unit that tracks criminals. The movie proceeds at a breathtaking speed and the plot just manages to hold together smart and stylish editing.
Not all debuts were successful. Roh Deok’s romantic comedy, “Very Ordinary Couple,” was one of the works that impressed critics but not enough moviegoers.
This also wasn’t the year for actor-turned-directors. Ha’s “Fasten Your Seatbelt” and Park Joong-hoon’s “Top Star” combined for an anonymous box-office presence despite heavy publicity.
Song Kang-ho, who starred in Snowpiercer, The Face Reader and The Attorney, was the most influential actor of 2013. There wasn’t a female performer who came remotely near his presence, although Jeon’s performance in Way Back Home garnered critical acclaim.
Ha, despite disappointing in his directorial debut, solidified his status as an up-and-coming actor with The Berlin File and The Terror Live.
Lee Jung-jae and Hwang Jung-min impressed in the New World, while Jung Woo-sung was memorable as a villain in Cold Eyes.

[bNT PICK] Rediscovered Actor in 2013, Lee Jung Jae
Source: BNTNews
fybrmxupzubl4yzlgeke6v1883iv2zf8.jpg
[by Kim Min Sun / translated by Cho Suyoun] His act lingers in people’s mind for a while.
Lee Jung Jae, who has been an actor for 20 years, never lets the audience take eyes off from screen with his charismatic act.
Lee Jung Jae had one of the best year in his acting career as ‘New World’ and ‘Physiognomy’ all became mega box-office hits in 2013 followed by grand success of ‘The Thieves’ in 2012.
At the 33rd Korean Association of Film Critics’ Awards, Lee Jung Jae said following words as he was given Best Actor Award. “2013 has been an extremely great year for me as my films were box-office hits and I was acknowledged for my roles in those films.”
khftemdixvmwvgfvvv5gbip7xuchj45u.jpg

Lee Jung Jae and ‘New World'
‘New World’ was released early in this year and even if the film was rated R, it collected nearly 47 million audience and made a sensation in Korea.
‘New World’ is about a detective, who tells his junior detective to secretly enter Korea’s biggest criminal organization Gold Moon, a junior detective who serves the order for 8 years in Gold Moon and the organization’s second-in-command, who sincerely takes care of the junior detective without knowing the truth.
In this film, Lee Jung Jae played the junior detective role, Lee Ja Sung, who is confused between his sly senior detective and humane Gold Moon’s second-in-command.
Since the film starred Korea’s two true actors Choi Min Sik and Hwang Jung Min as main casts, Lee Jung Jae revealed that he was so burdened to take a role among them. However, Lee certainly melted into his role and played it perfectly, making the audience to believe that there are no other suitable actors for this character.
As a result, ‘New World’ was sold to over 100 countries including France, Germany, Japan, United States and Thailand.

Lee Jung Jae and ‘Physiognomy’
‘Physiognomy’ received lots of attention even before the release for casting big celebrities in Korea such as Song Kang Ho, Lee Jong Suk, Baek Yoon Sik, Cho Jung Suk, Kim Hye Soo and Lee Jung Jae. The main character was Song Kang Ho, but there is no doubt that a scene in which Lee Jung Jae appears lingers the most after watching the film.
His appearance in the film was truly overwhelming until the film ended and he was completely ‘Soo Yang (his character)’ from head to toe.
In this scene, Lee Jung Jae walks in with a bloody animal he just caught and his appearance strikes terror into the audience’s hearts. His character Soo Yang’s desire was clear enough. He wanted to get rid of his young nephew king and become Chosun Dynasty’s new king. Without losing dignity composure, Lee Jung Jae expressed the historical character in closest way.
It was indeed, rediscovery of Lee Jung Jae.
The film collected nearly 10 million audiences and Lee Jung Jae received a trophy of ‘Best Supporting Actor’ at 34th Blue Dragon Awards.
With endless challenge and acting ability, Lee Jung Jae shined more than anyone else in 2013. People who saw his film always say, ‘Don’t watch it with your girlfriend.’
Not only women fans, but men are also captivated by his charms and amazing act in films. This is why his 2014 is expected more than ever. (photo by bntnews DB, captured from ‘New World’ ‘Physiognomy’)

THE INDEPENDENT CRITICS LIST of...THE 100 MOST HANDSOME FACES OF 2013

For 25 years, The Independent Critics have published a List of the 100 Most Beautiful Faces of each year. The lists have been published, in various formats, every year since 1990... and in recent years have been seen by over to 40 million unique visitors from around the world.
Now, for the first time, after tens of thousands of requests, The Independent Critics are listing the 100 Most Handsome Faces of the Year.
Unlike many other annual publications, The Independent Critics List is not a popularity contest. It is not about the sexiest or the most famous. Rather, it aims to be a very international list and one that is inclusive of many cultures, lifestyles, professions and degrees of fame. The Independent Critics List intends to inform public opinion rather than reflect it. This list searches far and wide, listening to the millions of suggestions submitted every year, and tries to put together a list representative of the modern ideal of aesthetic beauty.
25 countries are represented on this 2013 list. That number should go up every year as the list grows and expands. Feel free to comment below with your suggestions or opinions. Originality is most welcome! There is no need to suggest a meg-star or someone that is on the list already. New names are very welcome indeed. We want to add to our extensive database. Of course, lists are very subjective... you will disagree with some of the choices, but perhaps you will find a new favorite. Every year, this list will be populated by some legendary entries who never seem to fade, but it is also replenished with the freshest faces from around the world.

Innolife EnqueteWho are the stars that you wish to get married in 2014 the most?
Source: Innolife Korea
8317_1.jpg
In 2013, there were many star couples got married within the celebration of fans, like Lee Byeong-Heon and Lee Min-Jeong, Ji Seong and Lee Bo-Yeong, Baek Ji-Yeong and Jeong Seok-Won and etc.
8317_2.jpg
In 2014, who is going to get married happily? So Innolife Japan (www.innolife.net) had an enquete with the theme of 'Who are the stars that you wish to get married in 2014 the most?'
8317_3.jpg
The top was of Bae Yong-Joon, with more than 50%. Last year December, he admitted that he's dating a woman 14 years younger than him. So he also had a marriage rumor in April. So fans are giving the most attention to his marriage.
8317_4.jpg
Song Seung-Heon ranked 2nd. In 2014, Seong Seung-Heon is 39 years old in Korean age. So fans are drawing attention toward his marriage as it's his last year as 30s. But Song Seung-Heon said, "I think marriage is a far story, yet" at an interview last year.
8317_5.jpg
Choi Ji-Woo ranked 3rd, which is the top within female stars. She had shown maternal love through drama 'Strange House Keeper'. So after the drama, she got many questions about marriage on interviews. But she said, "I'm not eager to get married. I just want to enjoy this state."
8317_6.jpg
Kim Seon-Ah ranked 4th. She has many fans in Japan because of successful drama 'My Name is Kim Sam-Soon', and she's finding a new agency as her contract wuth current agency has expired. Fans hope she finds new home in many(?) ways.
8317_7.jpg
And stars of their age, Jeong Woo-Seong, Lee Jeong-Jae, Lee Seo-Jin, So Ji-Seop, Kim Hye-Soo and etc. were on the ranking. Fans are ironic. They want their loving stars to get married, and don't in the same time. But the ones who will celebrate the stars' wedding the most will be fans who's been keeping their side for a long time. jnkm soompi.com
junjihyun-leejungjae-012714.png
Several news agencies reported that Jun Ji Hyun and Lee Jung Jae will be reuniting with director Choi Dong Hoon, who directed last year’s big hit “The Thieves.”

Film industry sources commented, “Lee Jung Jae and Jun Ji Hyun will be working with Choi Dong Hoon once again. After Lee Jung Jae finishes filming for the movie ‘Big Match’ and Jun Ji Hyun finishes ‘Man from the Stars,’ the two will go right into shooting for this new film.”
Another film industry source stated, “Director Choi Dong Hoon has always thought of Lee Jung Jae and Jun Ji Hyun when he wrote the scenario for the new film, which shows how much faith he has in them. In the film industry, this new film is already being called ‘the second Thieves,’ showing that there is already a high level of anticipation.”
The new film titled “Assassin” (working title) is a caper movie set in the 1930s. Just like “The Thieves,” part of the filming location for “Assassin” will take place in Shanghai, China.
However, other news reports state that Jun Ji Hyun’s casting is not yet finalized. Her agency stated, “It is true that Jun Ji Hyun received the script for ‘Assassin’ but she is totally focused on ‘Man from the Stars’ at the moment that she has not had time to finalize her decision. She is positively reviewing the script right now and will be making a decision after the drama ends.”
It is reported that the film will start its production around the fall time after the cast has been finalized.

Jun Ji-hyun, Lee Jung-jae, Ha Jung-woo Considering New Film
by Jessica Kim TENASIA.com 201401271611775259_52e6072075f0c.jpg
Fans of top Korean actors Jun Ji-hyun, Lee Jung-jae, and Ha Jung-woo may get to see the three in the same film.

Multiple reports said on Monday that the three are in discussions to come together for caper movie “Assassination” (translated title) set in the 1930s and planning to crank in this fall.
Later in the day, Jun’s agency Culture Depot Co., Ltd. acknowledged that the actress “thinks positively of it” but that decisions will be made after she is done with her current hit series “Love from Star.”
Separately, an official with Lee’s agency explained, “We’ve received the script for the film and are looking into it positively. Detailed discussions will probably come after his upcoming film ‘Big Match (tentative title).’”
Ha’s agency too said that specific discussions will take place after the actor is done working on his directorial film, which he will also star in, based on Chinese author Yu Hua’s novel “Chronicle of a Blood Merchant.”
Choi Dong-hoon, who will helm “Assassination,” had directed smash hit “The Thieves” (2012) which starred a number of Korea’s hottest stars including Jun and Lee.
And although Ha has not worked with Choi before, Ha and Jun played a married couple in film “The Berlin File” last year.

Starring roles have been offered HA Jung-woo, JUN Ji-hyun and LEE Jung-jae with no casting confirmed as of yet. CHOI’s The Thieves came in just shy of 13 million admissions during its summer 2012 release, making it the second most popular Korean of all time behind Bong Joon Ho’s The Host (2006). CHOI has already directed the hits Tazza: The High Rollers (2006) and Woochi (2009). Save for focusing on an assassination plot that takes place in the 1930s, not much is know about CHOI’s new film yet, though the budget has been pegged at KRW 12 billion (USD 11.12 million). The Yellow Sea (2010), Nameless Gangster: Rules of the Time (2012) and The Berlin File star HA Jung-woo, who has never worked with CHOI before, is currently considering a lead role in the project. Meanwhile, JUN Ji-hyun (My Sassy Girl, 2001) and LEE Jung-jae (New World), who both starred in CHOI’s The Thieves, are also considering offers. All three stars will respond once they complete their current projects. The tantalizing prospect of seeing these stars sign on to the hitmaker’s enticing new project has already raised expectation in Korea, with the internet all aflutter at the news. Assassination is aiming for a 2015 release date.
