Oh, that always happen in real life, your girl was taken away from you, those kind of stories... Any recommendations? Honestly I find Baker King as my favorite drama ever! In terms of story telling and acting, I find "Dae Jang Geum", "Jumong", "Hong Gil Dong", "I'm Sorry i Love You" as my all time favorites too :)

Review: KBS’ Baker King, Kim Tak Goo – Best Korean Drama of the Year

Posted on September 8, 2010 by dryedmangoez

It is only September, but one Korean drama seems poised to be the most watched and quite possibly the best drama of 2010.

This drama has taken the country by storm hurricane, now officially a “national drama” by quickly rising to ratings upwards of 40% and poised to top the rare 50% mark as it nears its finale. A series that probably not even KBS, its network, expected to become such an immense hit.

The drama is Baker King, Kim Tak Goo (제빵왕 김탁구/King of Baking, Kim Tak Goo/Int’l title: Bread, Love and Dreams), an emotional roller coaster of a series that tells a story of revenge, hope, love, and dreams in a way no other Korean drama has done this year.

A Full, Carefully Crafted Story

Baker King begins by introducing us to the wealthy Goo family who own a food empire that focuses on family patriarch Il Jung’s passion for baking. But not all is happy in the manor as the family only has two daughters yet no son to inherit the land. As frustration over the lack of an heir weighs on the minds of Il Jung, his wife In Sook , and his mother, Il Jung begins fancying a nurse, Kim Mi Sun, an employee of the manor, whom he basically seduces to hope a son is born of their one night together.

Being equally frustrated despite continually trying with her own husband and finding out of Mi Sun’s pregnancy by him, In Sook lets it all out to Han Seung Jae, Il Jung’s right hand man who harbors feelings for her. They too share a night together and she becomes pregnant… with a son! whom she will continue to pass off as her husband’s.

Mi Sun leaves the mansion, despite Il Jung and his mother insisting they stay. Fast forward 12 years later when Mi Sun and her son, Tak Goo (a name suggested by Il Jung) are living a simple life in the country. Not wanting to keep her already street smart son struggling in life, Mi Sun takes Tak Goo to his father, hoping they will take better care of him than she could.

Tak Goo isn’t necessarily welcomed with open arms, especially by In Sook and her son Ma Jun, knowing Tak Goo could take everything away from her and her son as the eldest male heir of their now food empire.

Tak Goo isn’t happy about staying at the mansion either, preferring to be with his mother and their simple life. But with many hands on deck wanting to keep Tak Goo from getting anywhere near the company and family and with the first of just many surprising twists, Tak Goo and his mother Mi Sun are separated for the next 12 years. And during those 12 years, Tak Goo lives on the streets, fending for himself and searching the entire country for his mother.

And that is only the beginning.

Now in his 20s, Tak Goo begins crossing paths with the people of his childhood, the people he holds responsible for him being separated from his mother, and his first love.

Tak Goo used to love the smell of bread, gifted with a powerful sense of smell that allowed him, among other things, to distinguish between good and bad dough for baking; a quality highly admired by his father, a student of baking himself, during their short time together. Because of the events 12 years ago, Tak Goo swore off bread, pointing out the bad memories it brought about. But soon it is bread and baking that he uses to prove himself, prove his worth, and drives him to move forward when a master baker (whom he first meets that night 12 years ago he started life on his own) takes him into his bakery as his mentor.

Never a Dull Moment

That seems like a lot, already the entire plot of a typical Korean drama series. But what probably makes Baker King stand out from the rest is that the writers have written a carefully crafted story that continually drives the series forward.

The series is fast paced, easily able to fill its 30 episode order with story when some dramas can’t even fill the typical 16-episode order without going in circles and/or unrelated subplots.

There are so many moving pieces in each episode, all contributing to the overarching story. With one surprise and twist after another, Baker King manages to not only keep the story moving, but grab a hold of your interest and never lets it go.

The series’ ability to jerk itself away from tired drama clichés is a major part in that continuous flow. Just when you think they’ll delve into stereotypical soap, they jerk you back onto the road less traveled.

Baker King is an emotional roller coaster in the best way possible. Happiness, sadness, anger, excitement; Tearing up from being so moved to standing up and cheering to wanting to throw something at the television in anger, Baker King arouses emotion so well that you are more than invested in the lives of these characters, especially our hero Kim Tak Goo.

Strong All Around

While other current Korean dramas are slickly produced, Baker King smartly uses it’s incredibly strong cast to boost its already strong script. Yoon Shi Yoon, who is a relative newcomer, leads the series like he’s been doing this for years. Charming and likeable, you can’t help but want to root for him.

The rest of the cast including newcomer Joo Won as Ma Jun, young drama veterans Lee Young Ah (as Mi Sun, granddaughter of the master baker Pal Bong) and fan favorite Eugene (as Tak Goo’s first love, Yoo Kyung) as well as the real veterans Jun Kwang Ryul, Jun In Hwa, Jun Mi Sun, and Jung Sung Mo all bring to life characters you want to root for and love to hate.

It is not hard to see why South Korea and the rest of the world have been captivated by Baker King, Kim Tak Goo. It is a story of revenge, hope, love, determination, and dreams. It is excellently written, flawlessly performed, and a real winner.

A very big, but welcome surprise in the world of Korean drama.

I've just finished watching this a few weeks ago, and I can't get enough of it (I've rewatched it at least two times). The acting is great, and I can't help but applaud the actors and actresses in kdrama where real quality acting is needed since they don't have a lot of chance to mess up (NG) due to their tight filming schedule. There professionalism is to complimented. I love Tak Gu and Mi Sun in this series. Ma Joon is a conflicted soul who finally finds solace at the end (thank goodness) and has the love of Yu Kyung (who can finally settle down). I can't help but think Ma Joon wouldn't grow up to be who he was when the adults first started in the show (episode 7) if Tak Gu stuck around the house. Tak Gu has a positive influence over Ma Joon, as it is shown when they both tried to run away and Ma Joon tried to help Tak Gu. Even though, at the end of episode 6, Ma Joon betrayed Tak Gu by claiming he took the money, he was still concerned about Tak Gu when he heard that Tak Gu was taken away by Mr. Han. He just had his mother's pride, and it was this pride and his own darken background that drove him to the edge. He knows he is illegitimate, so he always striving to gain the foster father's approval and his mother's approval while saving her. Tak Gu's comment for being his hyung had a huge effect on Ma Joon, and I believe that Ma Joon always thought of Tak Gu as his hyung whether he liked to admit it or not. Because in Ma Joon's eyes Tak Gu is the only relative--even though unrelated--who will give him the unconditional love that he always wanted but could never received. Tak Gu is the only one who would not spoiled him and would always tried to right him from his wrong. This is the same as Pal-Bong Grandpa, and that is why both of them--Tak Gu and Pal Bong Grandpa--are the most influential people in his life; they are his conscious.

Although I hate Manager Han for what he did, I think he is the most pitiful person in this series. None of the things that he did in his life was for him. It was for the woman that he loves and the son he has. He thought the woman loves him but she never did and will never leave her husband. Hence, he has nothing left. He lives his life so evilly all for naught. He's pitiful because all he is is just a pawn that has out lived his usage and is tossed into the gutter. I don't condone his action, but I can't help but pity his self-inflicted fate.

And I agree with some of the viewers, the most hated character should not be In Sook, but the husband and the grandmother for upholding the dumb tradition. Both of them drove her to the corner. As much as I hate In Sook, she wouldn't have turned out like this if it weren't for the pressure of the grandmother and the disdain her husband shows her every time he sees her. If he loves her a little bit more and care about her, she wouldn't have become the bitter woman she is until the end. And yes, she has a horrible pride.

But never the less, I wish I can see YSY and LYA in another drama again. They look so cute together and they look like a wonderful couple on screen. Also, I almost forgot...I want to see the young Tak Gu in other series as well. He is an awesome child actor. He was so great that I had time liking YSY at the beginning.

I just finished this drama...every thing about this drama was beautiful. The characters, the actors/actresses, the setting (that mansion is a BOSS) and the acting quality.
Especially Joo Won, his character was off the charts and he pulled it off well. His eyes and that slight frown is really powerful. Omg, I really hated him during the drama and his stupid antics but by the end when he redeemed himself by calling the cops on his own father...I was moved. I am so glad he manages to stop the cycle of hate by changing himself and for that...he changed Yukyung. I mean, look how happy they are bythe end of the drama. They can actually smile at each other and notice things other than themselves. Theycan actually begin to start enjoying each other instead of being spiteful with and at each other.
Yoon Si Yoon is amazing, I mean the way he pulled off his character...I really did believe through out the drama that therecould be such a positive person despite all the crap he/she may go through. Normally, though someone with that much trauma in his life would turn jaded, thats just how it is..see Majoon..but I guess since he has his mother's blood he isn't prone to that jaded personality. Majoon, however, was really a recipe for disaster what with getting his mom's temperand his dad's I-can-murder persona..yeah. He was practically born for it but I like how the story makes us believe that bad peoplecan turn around...it doesn't happen as often as we'd like but for this drama..I like it that it does. At first, I was disappointed thathe couldn't get Yukyung but than I realize how important it was that he was able to let go of that person in his pastfor someone in his present...Mi Sun. Mi Sun is the perfect girl for him, she is patient and bright while being absolutely supportive of him. She is so pure like he is so they are perfect together.
YuKyung...omg..this girl made my blood boil with her wishy washy crap. I mean, really, did she really tell him she will always keep him in her heart and was eternally grateful for him after telling him she was marrying Majoon this upcoming Sunday? WOW. I mean, thats just rude. ButI guess its true because she really loved him and was grateful for him for being the first person in her life to defend her against her father. In the end, I like how she was able to let herself be with Majoon. They are perfect together because they have so much pain...
Ahh..I loved JinGoo. I just- words can not even describe how much I love this supporting character. He is like superman. Came to the rescuefor the mother-son pair on the most crucial times (the attempted rape and then wielding a probably close to 150 pound 26 year old with richard simmons' ONE hand off the edge of a building) like thats just crazy superpower stuff. LOVE him. I don't even consider him a bad guy because both times he supposedly seems to be screwing Tak Goo/Tak Goo mom over it was under the President's orders. So, he's pretty neat in that aspect that he is consistent.
As for the President, ugh, I was to punch him in the face every time I see him on screen. Such a cold bastard..like really? He doesn't need to be that cold at home as well. I hated that he is so passive about every thing except his mom. Like for real? I know youre the President of Geosung but there needs to be a healthy balance between work and family life! He is the reason all of this even started..ugh..this man. At the end, I really only started to feel he was redeemed when he actually gave permission to Majoon's wedding and screamed at Manager Han that he was going to protect BOTH his sons.
Speaking of his sons, uhm..this is so stupid but I only realized they were not brothers at ALL when Majoon mentioned it -_-. Wow, for some reason a part of me hoped they were half but guess not. Somewhere in there I got confused...But yeah, I love it how by the end, nobody really finds out that Majoon is not even blood related to Tak Goo except the Mom and Yukyung? Oh and the mom is really pitiful..all by herself...she still wants to live in the house despite her husband saying he will not say anything to her while she is living with him or if she lives he won't stop her? Wow.
I am ultimately surprised that Ja Kyung actually gets to run Geosung...thats unnatural but I understand why its necessary. I mean, at the end of the day she was the most brightest and dedicated to the company. She was the one that wanted it from the very beginning while the boys just kind of got the chance at it without actually valuing it. It also a poetic ending because this mean Majun doesn't actually becoming a shadow or whatever his dad swore he would be and Tak Goo doesn't turn into a workaholic like his dad. I mean, look at him working at Geosung during that preliminary 1 month..we barely saw scenes of him with his Pal Bong family because he was always working!
I am really grateful for the writer for creating this drama and feel so bad that she was even on Lactated Ringer's solution because of the stress but herefforts were not in vain because this is such an amazing drama. I think its even better than Ojakgyo Brothers and I LOVEEEEE Ojakgyo Brothers, only because there was more emphasis on romance. I think the romance in this drama was fleeting...I would have loved more intimacy between Mi Sun and Tak Goo..hmm..that might be the only flaw.
I can't wait to get this drama on DVD!!
