K-Drama Mid Series Check: “When Time Stopped” Dwells On Human Emotions While Maintains Its Fantasy Premise

There seems to be no stopping of When Time Stopped in giving us the feels.

When Time Stopped has slightly shifted its focus to feature the building’s tenants, adding a touch of reality to the series. This fantasy-romance drama has definitely highlighted the human aspect, while keeping its supernatural plot.

Joon Woo and Sun Ah set out rules for when he utilizes his ability. First rule is to ignore each other during Joon Woo’s “time”. Second condition is for Joon Woo to give Sun Ah a heads up whenever he stops time. The third and most important rule, is for Sun Ah to keep her mouth shut. She is not to tell anyone about Joon Woo’s ability. She asks Joon Woo if he can let her use his ability as a favor but he declines.

Third floor tenant continues to harass Sun Ah and even goes far to stage a fake kidnap attempt to “put her in her place”. He is waiting for her to return home and is mad at Sun Ah for leaving his car unattended. He even slaps her for talking back which Joon Woo witnessed. But the guy does not stop there. After Sun Ah confronts her and throws something at his face, he instructs the same guys to abduct her the next day. She is able to escape and as she runs, Joon Woo stops the time and puts all the guys, including Soo Kwang, on top of a trailer high above the ground.

Joon Woo sits by Sun Ah and even before he asks his question, Sun Ah voluntarily tells him about her situation. Viewers gets to know that it is her maternal uncle’s debt to loan shark slash wannabe gangster Park Soo Kwang that landed her father in a tight situation.

Although Sun Ah immediately opposes her father to help her uncle, she arrives one day from school to a house full of scary looking guys. She inherits the debt when her father dies. His death forces Sun Ah to quit school and just focuses on work to be able to pay Soo Kwang. She tells Joon Woo the reason her father doesn’t want to sell the building is because it contains lot of memories.

He decided to help her settle her debt by “borrowing” money from the bank. After she rips the promissory note and evicts Soo Kwang, Joon Woo once again stops the time to retrieve the money and returns it to the bank. Feeling betrayed, Soo Kwang is even more adamant in staying, staging a protest in front of the building gate. Seriously, third floor guy is so infuriating.

Here we met another tenant, from room 215. A seemingly well-mannered and soft-spoken man – but Wan Ho is hiding a dark past. He used to be an enforcer of a well-known gang and has treated a lot of people harshly, following his boss’ orders. But one girl creeps into his heart and tugs his human side. He slowly softens and gets attached to the girl which does not escape his boss’ attention. The leader of the gang starts to doubt his loyalty. When the little girl dies and he rushes to the hospital, the boss obviously feels betrayed.

Police arrests Wan Ho at the hospital and he is imprisoned for years. He decides to lead a life away from the gang when he gets out of the prison. This action earns the gang leader’s ire and vows to destroy Wan Ho, still thinking he has handed over his notebook to the authorities.

Sun Ah meddles and asks for Joon Woo’s help again. She tells the truth to the leader and it pacifies him. Their relationship may take time to rebuild, but that scene when he asked Wan Ho to tell him everything about the little girl is touching. Even the so-called bad guys can have their soft sides indeed.

The resident of room 202 is quite talkative and you would think that she is just living a normal life. Inside her house, she actually lives a lonely existence. Although she has her daughter, it feels like she is living alone as her daughter Soo Na locks herself inside her room. It is revealed that Soo Na has been abused by her college professor. No one believes her with bad rumors of her having a relationship with a professor spreading all around the campus. She then isolates herself when her mother said harsh words that sound like she is to blame. For six years she did not venture out of her room and her mother has only one-way conversations with her.

Joon Moo advises the mother to sincerely apologize – which she did. It convinces Soo Na to step out of her room and testifies against the professor. One reporter brings up the relationship rumors which stressed Soo Na and she decides to end her life. As the mother and daughter plunged to their death, Sun Ah and Joon Moo arrive on time to prevent their death. Joon Moo has really come a long way as it is him who rushes to help. The previous Joon Moo would not care, but the current Joon Moo actually does.

Reaper Myung Woon and Joon Moo have already crossed paths and get drawn to a bracelet. Joon Moo remembers a woman wearing the bracelet in his dream, while Myung Woon hears voices when he passes by the shop where it is being displayed. He acts frozen when Joon Moo stops the time to steal the bracelet. He follows him and heard that Sun Ah knew about his time-stopping ability.

There is really something about that bracelet because it also triggers something in God’s dream. He suddenly wants to monitor Myung Woon’s every move to the point that he has people following him. From the start of the series, it was established that reapers are not humans. Even Myung Woon told the same thing to the Reaper trainee after they caught the mother and son shape-shifters.

Up to this point, have you wondered how Joon Moo was able to move people from one place to another? It requires a whole lot of physical strength to be able to do that, make sense? So is he even human? We will probably get the answer in the succeeding episodes.

At this midpoint, the characters’ development and plot progression have been still quite satisfactory. The stories of the tenants surely are adding color to the premise. To note, the use of Joon Moo’s ability to provide resolution to the tenants’ conflicts is a nice touch.

Apart from highlighting the stories of the tenants, the past episodes of When Time Stopped also focused on how Joon Woo is starting to change. From an aloof and uncaring center, he was slowly opening up and showing concern. He even caught himself smiling as he remembered Sun Ah’s reaction. Even his former landlord noticed his smile and happy disposition. The bracelet and the recurring dream also stirred viewers’ curiosity about Myung Woon’s past and Joon Woo’s arc as there is definitely more than meets the eye.
