New dramas do battle

January 06, 2010

On every Monday and Tuesday night last year, the "queen" dominated Korean TV drama world. Here the queen refers to the MBC hit drama "Queen Seondeok" which aired during more than half the year from May 25 to Dec. 22 and boasted a record 44 percent audience share at its peak.

Now, three new TV series from three broadcasters are poised to compete for the position that was exclusively possessed by Queen Seondeok last year. The three, all of which kicked off the first episode this Monday, are "Jejungwon" from SBS, "The Masters of the Art of Study" from KBS, and "Pasta" from MBC.

Jejungwon from SBS

Jejungwon is a drama about Korea's first modern hospital established by King Gojong in 1885 on the suggestion of American medical missionary Horace N. Allen, named Gwanghyewon, or the Widespread Relief House - later renamed Jejungwon.

The Masters of the Art of Study

The Masters of the Art of Study, the new KBS2 Monday/Tuesday series based on the Japanese comic book "Dragon Zakura" by Norifusa Mita - which made a splash in Japan and was also made into a TV drama there in 2005 - is a story about underprivileged students at a third-class high school struggling to get into a top university in the country, with the help of a strong-willed lawyer-turned-educator.

MBC's new show Pasta

Meanwhile, MBC's new show Pasta is set to be a "tasty and catchy" culinary drama such as the 2005 hit drama "My Lovely Samsoon." The story revolves around an aspiring female character who strives to become a recognized chef in the fictional Italian restaurant La Sfera.

Korean networks serve up a smorgasbord of dramas

Three shows compete for coveted 'Queen Seondeok' slot

Three new TV dramas on thetworksree n - "Masters of the Art of Study" on KBS, "Pasta" on MBC and "Jejungwon" on SBS, from top to bottom left - compete for the time slot dominated by Queen Seondeok last year. Provided by DramaHouse, MBC and SBS

On Monday and Tuesday nights from May 25 to Dec. 22 last year, the Korean TV drama world was dominated by a queen.

During its seven-month run, the MBC hit drama "Queen Seondeok" topped ratings lists, recording an audience share of 44 percent at its peak.

Now, three new TV series on three different networks are poised to compete for the position that was so well guarded by Queen Seondeok last year. The three series, all of which kicked off on Monday and are broadcast in the same Monday-Tuesday time slot at 10 p.m. both nights, are "Jejungwon" on SBS, "Masters of the Art of Study" on KBS, and "Pasta" on MBC.

The battle between the three could all come down to style and subject matter.

Among the offerings are a period drama and two contemporary tales, and the three dramas are set within the fields of medicine, education and culinary arts, respectively.

Jejungwon is a drama about the first modern hospital in Korea. The hospital was established by King Gojong in 1885 at the suggestion of American medical missionary Horace N. Allen and originally named Gwanghyewon, or Widespread Relief House, before it was renamed Jejungwon.

Based on a true story, the drama, set in the last years of the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910), tells the story of a man named Hwang Jeong who was born into the lower class and worked his way up from butcher to become the first surgeon of the Joseon era and later, an independence fighter.

Actor Park Yong-woo, who starred in movies like "Handphone" (2009) and "Once Upon A Time" (2008), has taken the role of Hwang Jeong. He is joined by actress Han Hye-jin, who plays Yu Seok-ran, and actor Yeon Jung-hoon as Baek Do-yang, Hwang Jeong's rival in life and love.

Masters of the Art of Study is based on the Japanese comic book "Dragon Zakura" by Norifusa Mita. The comic, which made a splash in Japan and was also made into a TV drama there in 2005, is about a group of underprivileged students at a low-ranking high school who are struggling to get into a top university with the help of a strong-willed lawyer-turned-educator.

The Korean version of the drama stars several up-and-coming teenage actors, including Yoo Seung-ho, an 18-year-old who made his debut in 2000 and has since developed a promising career. Yoo's most recent role was Kim Chun-chu in Queen Seondeok.

Meanwhile, MBC's new show Pasta is a culinary drama that revolves around a female character who aspires to become a recognized chef at the fictional Italian restaurant La Sfera. The show gives viewers a glimpse of life behind the scenes in a busy Italian kitchen.

The drama stars actress Kong Hyo-jin, who is making a return to the small screen more than two years after her appearance in the tearjerker "Thank You" in 2007.

The male lead is played by actor Lee Sun-kyun, who has starred in a number of TV dramas and movies including "Paju" (2009). Lee plays a famous but picky chef who seems to have been modeled after Gordon Ramsay, the hot-tempered chef whose harsh training methods became well known through the TV series "Hell's Kitchen."

Though it still remains to be seen which of these dramas will rule the Monday-Tuesday time slot, it seems that Masters of the Art of Study has gotten a head start in the already tight competition.

According to a report released Wednesday by audience rating agency AGB Nielsen Media Research, the drama posted a 15.9 percent audience rating for its Tuesday episode, closely followed by Pasta with 15.1 percent and Jejungwon with 14.6 percent.

Thanks for the all the updates, kdramafanusa.

A few things:

1. I tried downloading ep 2 720 version on MU but for 2 times it gave me this pop up which is a potential for virus so I shut down the browser. That was just strange and it happened randomly.

2. Regarding ep 2 of Jejoongwon, the rating differs on 2 rating system which is rather odd. TNS shows rating improved while AGB shows it went down. I'm not sure which one is more accurate but of course I prefer the better number. (Anyways, more strange stuff.)

3. Though I like this, I doubt that the rating will go in the 30 range. I'm hopeful for 20 range. (QSD was different. Though the plot was pretty wacky but it was done thriller style. That was my impression anyways.)

My first impression from watching it fully sub in Viikii was it seems a good drama.. It was pretty fast pace and of course thriller style.. However, not to thrill to see the body parts of the headless friend. But, it was interesting.. Now, I have a couple of questions.. Did the Western did came at the end of Josean era?? I notice one of the guy have a gun.. When did the gun came to Korea during that time??? Also, I thought they did not like Western and prohibit people be near the Westerner (Tamra Island).. When did they welcome the Westerners? Therefore, it is interesting.. I do hope the ratings will go up for this drama...

It's amazing! They actually build a house inside the studio?

I love to see these 'behind-the-scene' pictures. Thanks.

Is it the heater? I can imagine how cold it can be at this time in Korea.

I would love to watch Jejoongwon now, but have to wait for the subs <_< , and hate to be spoiled, sigh!!!

I just came off QSD and I'm not sure I'm ready for this kind of commitment yet (cause I'm sure this thing'll go beyond my 30-ep threshold).

That being said, Jejoongwon looks and feels great and the medical drama aspect seems to work well in the sageuk setting. I admit I'm not too impressed by the two male leads. Don't get me wrong, they're both very good, just...well...MBC had lightning in a bottle with QSD, and this feels (at least at this point) too much like the male version of it to be of interest to me. Watching two women battle is so much more addicting and fun to watch than two guys duking it out over a surgeon's table. Even if HHJ is in it.

But then again we're only at the second ep. Things can change.

Due to the super chilly weather, casts and crews of Jejungwon experienced some difficulty when shooting on location.

So here are ways for them to keep warm.

Park Yong-Woo is never far away from a portable heater. Due to the cold temperature, face and ears nose will appear red, so to avoid the redness, he has to constantly shoved his face to the heater. Seems like he is kissing the heater too often.

Besides the multiple layers of clothes one has to wear, Han Hye-Jin and Yeon are spotted with earplugs. Hers white and his black in colour.

For the actress, earplugs poses challenge too, as it will mess-up her hair.

jjw1.jpg

It was reported early this week that Yeon and some of the crew had to take the trains to reach the location set. This is due to the heavy snowfall that blanketed the city which made it impossible for them to travel by car. Yeon who was in full costume had to brave the stares from the public but members of the public, although were surprised to see him, did not give him any problems.
