Saw ep 3 subbed on vikii. So it's Western modernization vs. JP modernization (with evil intentions). Wataru-san might as well take Do Yang under his wing while Allen takes Hang Jung to train then both sides can duke it out with their scalpel. It's too bad for Do Yang that Hang Jung had experience slicing and sewing. Sure that was slicing beef and sewing shoes but that was all he needed. He did a pretty good job sewing up the criminal's corpse some eps ago. Ep 4 will be Hang Jung's first try it seems.

*edit for cheer*

OMFG this drama is sooooooo good! I think this drama deserves more viewers than that. Koreans should know a little bit of how the first hospital began in Korea, and I think this drama captures a lot about it. Eh... who cares about the ratings. The drama is actually good and I'm looking forward to next week's episodes! [=

Makes me want to become a doctor... lol~ =X

Saw ep 4 raw. The pace is moving along very nicely. I really like the background music. I think I need to spam this thread a little bit so let me throw in a watching-it-raw summary. (I may not remember stuff in order. Brain is deteriorating bad.) Tomorrow I'll spam more with screen caps.

The King was escorted to another court where he was greeted by some JP military personnel which means the JP are in control now I think. At some Westerner's residence, royal docs were trying to treat royal Prince by putting a lot of shtuff on his body. (Now if it was Dae Jang Geum it would have worked but this is Jejoongwon peeps.) So Sir Interpreter and Hang Jung were getting kind of concerned and I don't blame them really. I mean those guys were spreading the mud I mean the herbs I mean the brown shtuff and it was looking kind of gross. So finally doc Allen came to the rescue just to get some lecture from the royal docs. They didn't want him to treat the Prince maybe because he wasn't l33t enough in their standards. So Hang Jung showed his bullets scars and convinced the royal docs. "yeah he's l33t dudes. He's the real thang." The end result was two stubborn ones got carried out of the room (princess style. No I mean pig roasting style.)

Anyways, Allen began wiping off the shtuff and putting on the anesthetic druggies or something I think and Hang Jung was observing it closely. Meanwhile, Watanabe was at his lab doing stuff to corpse when another JP came in and told him something related to "poison" ?? Back to rescue mission, Allen was stitching up the neck or something. Sir Interpreter came out to greet Watanabe and possibly told him to hit the road but the JP doc was on a mission and he had no intention to leave. Hang Jung remembered how Watanabe was so heartless when he treated his mom and felt rather angry but tried not to show. Allen said something to W. (and maybe asked him to get something.) W. left the room to the outside and took out a bottle of liquid (which probably was poison that he planned to use on the Prince). Hang Jung followed and saw it. He took the needle from W. and threatened him to help Allen or something. W. came back inside with Hang Jung. He ended up helping Allen stitch up the Prince. By the morning they were all done and Sir Interpreter found out that his daughter came to deliver more medical goods (as she sneaked out from the house during the night.) Sir Interpreter reprimanded her for it. Hang Jung volunteered to take her home. On the way home they shared a good conversation and some good old guy meets gal flirting.

Meanwhile, Do Yang's pop got slashed by JP military or something and Do Yang was carrying him back to SR's house to find Allen. Do Yang got there just as Hang Jung was about to leave. So Do Yang left his dad there and ran to find Allen from the other residence. Hang Jung came inside to help stop the bleeding in the meantime. After a while, another acquaintance of Do Yang's dad came in and started panicking and rushing for somebody to do something. At this time Do Yang finally got Allen and they were on their way back. At Sir Interpreter's residence, Do Yang's dad wasn't doing very good. He murmured something then lost conscious. The other man started pushing Hang Jung to do something. Hang Jung visualized that it was like his mom dying so he wanted to do something. He started to follow procedures with anesthetic drug. Then he started to stitch up the man as he remembered from Allen. After he was done, Do Yang's dad already stopped breathing. At that time Allen and Do Yang also just came back and saw it. Do Yang started to beat up on Hang Jung as he found out that it was Hang Jung who stitched up his dad.

(I think I'm the only one here who think PYW is hot stuff anyways. The guy ain't no sparkling young lad but he's one versatile actor and is still hot from this perspective. )

You're not the only one. :)

I have been waiting for this drama for so long, the writer did White Tower which was a masterpiece. I was very happy when I heard that Park Yong-Woo would be playing the lead character last year.

Historical drama concocts formula for success

‘Jejungwon’ offers a glimpse into life in the Joseon Dynasty through the eyes of a surgeon

Actor Park Yong-woo plays Hwang Jeong, the lead character in the new historical drama “Jejungwon.” The character is the first surgeon in the Joseon era and later becomes an independence fighter. Provided by SBS

There are a number of reasons why medical dramas are popular. They depict the tensions that arise in emergency situations, the competition that elite med school students face, and the conflicts between the noble goal of saving lives and the hectic reality of working at a hospital.

The Korean medical dramas, “The Great White Tower” and “New Heart” combined all of these elements to win high ratings and critical acclaim. But just as in medicine, there is no set formula for success on television, and it’s hard to predict which combination of elements will win viewers over.

“Jejungwon,” a new drama that revolves around life at the first modern medical institution in Korea, is hoping it has the right combination of fact and fantasy. The show, which currently airs every Monday and Tuesday at 10 p.m. on SBS, is named after the hospital established by King Gojong in 1885 at the suggestion of American medical missionary Horace N. Allen. (The hospital was originally known as Gwanghyewon, or Widespread Relief House; the name later changed to Jejungwon and then Severance Hospital.)

Actor Park Yong-woo, 38, plays Hwang Jeong, the lead character whose story is loosely based on a real person. Hwang was born into a poor family, grew up to be a butcher and later became the first surgeon in the Joseon era and an independence fighter.

“The reason why I didn’t hesitate to take the role was that Hwang Jeong is a very realistic character, which appealed to me,” Park said in a recent interview.

“Hwang Jeong entered Western medicine due to his deep resentment about the death of his mother, who died without treatment because of his family’s low social standing,” Park said. “He doesn’t stop trying to achieve his goals and starts thinking not only about saving people’s lives but also his country. Although he seems somewhat unsophisticated, for ordinary people he is a humane and caring doctor, and I tried to portray those qualities so that viewers would empathize with him.”

Jejungwon, which consists of 36 episodes, follows Hwang Jeong as he enters medicine and competes with his peers at the hospital; later, after he has become a surgeon, we see him leaving for Manchuria to fight for Korean independence.

Scriptwriter Lee Gi-won, who wrote the script for the 2007 hit medical drama The Great White Tower, which he based on a Japanese novel, talked about how he became interested in Jejungwon.

“When I was working on The Great White Tower, I started doing research on the Korean medical system and found that one of the graduates of the medical school affiliated with Jejungwon was the son of a butcher,” he said. “As the movie ‘Forrest Gump’ portrays America through the eyes of an individual who had an eventful life, the drama Jejungwon will give you a glimpse of what life in the late Joseon Dynasty [1392-1910] was like through the story of Hwang Jeong, who comes of age during his time at Jejungwon.”

Park is returning to television for the first time in six years. He last appeared in the 2004 drama “Terms of Endearment” and then went on to movies like “Once Upon A Time” (2008) and “Handphone” (2009).

“I chose this role because Hwang Jeong is a dramatic character any actor would want to play,” Park said. “I also liked the social message in the drama. And even though the drama is set in the Joseon Dynasty, the message still resonates. I also feel that Hwang Jeong’s story resembles my journey toward becoming an actor.”

At the end of ep 4 though Do Yang's dad didn't died because of Hang Jung but with this guilt he may no longer have reasons to resent Do Yang. I really look forward for next ep to see the escape and Hang Jung's decision to stay or so it suggests.

Here are some 720 caps of good ole guy meet gal subtle flirting. (I'm a bit drowsy to do more screencaps.)

Hang Jung was all flustered after hearing that butcher may be the first group who could be doctors due to their already established skills so he started babbling (which I like.)

He's arrogant, ruthless and a little bit of a bad egg but I don't think he's hardcore evil though. :P (Honestly I still haven't watched ep 1-2 subbed and I'll give him a benefit of a doubt on him screwing Hang Jung over. Okay he did screw Hang Jung over and got involved in shady bribery business. He just didn't kill Hang Jung by his own hands. Now that doesn't make it any better. I tried. :P ) I think in time he'll turn out a not so bad guy and people will forget what he did in the beginning. Ep 4 puts him in a fairly good light. He is a good son after all. No I don't mean "the good son". :P

thanks for your reply

in character descriptions, seems like he's not really a bad guy, i hope it's true :(

Baek Do Yang, who was born rich and smart, was always the greatest wherever he went. However in front of Hwang Jung, he was always second in means of medical science and love. Such disappointment leads him into becoming a cat’s paw of Japan’s colonial medical policy; however he realizes his big mistake and comes back to Jae Jung Won. There he puts on the wing of medical science and grows by himself.

I think the drama will make the Japanese ze evil ones (which is getting pretty obvious now), not Do Yang so you need not worry. :D Just watch it mate.
