A double BEAUTIFUL DAYS' treat ♥ Happy 7th Anniversary & 100pages BD-soompi.com

Charming Lee Byung-hun

d0049493_20282383.jpg

"I once told the scriptwriter to refrain from scripting my character to perfection. A drama centered around a love affair is so run-of-the-mill and the dramatic scenes merely helps to garner high ratings. The ultimate reason for a viewer to follow the show to the end is the perfect leads."

Although it has an ordinary storyline, "Beautiful Days" has became an obsession for many female viewers. The arranged love triangle among the characters played by Lee Byung-hun, Choi Ji-woo and Ryu Si-won reflects the popularity of each of the cast. Lee Byung-hun's portrayal of the handsome and suave Lee Min-chul who has his heart set on Choi Ji-woo's character has won him the hearts of many female fans.

The role of Lee Min-chul was originally meant for another actor but after a meeting by the SBS management team, it was unanimously agreed that the role be given to Lee Byung-hun. As such, the scriptwriter had to modify the role several times to better suit Lee Byung-hun. This was also the reason for emphasising the importance of Lee's role in the love triangle with Choi Ji-woo and Ryu Si-won.

"My role encases a great amount of charisma, it extends even to the decisive style that is clearly visible even in the speech, as such, I faced great pressure initially. I told the scriptwriter not to create a character that embodies only the good qualities. I'm glad that even Min-chul's speech and gestures differs as the story progresses. Such changes reflects the gentleness in him that has arised because of his attitude towards love."

The acceptance of Lee Min-chul by many female viewers could be due to the absence of such men in reality. Such attention was extended to his tinted hair and fringe, his impeccable dress style of black suits, red and blue-shaded ties and his white dress-shirts. All these further enhances the character.

With the success of "Beautiful Days", Lee Byung-hun naturally became the most interviewed artiste. However, wanting to retain the air of mystery as an artiste, he was only willing to answer questions pertaining to his career. As he has been slated to attend a film awards event this fall, we wonder about the air of mystery that we will sense through the camera lens.

Choi Ji-woo's screen kisses

jw24kz8.jpg

Choi Ji-woo, who was in Taiwan for a publicity trip for her drama "Beautiful Days", revealed that she had shared various kissing scenes with Korea's leading men : Ahn Jae-wook, Jang Dong-gun, Ryu Si-won, Lee Byung-hun, Kim Seung-woo and Song Seung-hun. Apart from the the memorable passionate kiss shared with Lee Byung-hun, she has yet to experience one that was sweet and gentle. "Especially Jang-Dong-gun, he is too handsome that he makes an unsuitable life partner."

Choi Ji-woo is a forthright person and extremely loyal to relationships. She had directly told Ryu Si-won, "The person I admire most is Lee Byung-hun, I had learnt much from him from the kissing scene we shared in "Beautiful Days". To that, Ryu Si-won shook his head and gave a sigh, not forgetting to mumble his frustrations at Lee Byung-hun - jokingly.

When she first started her career, due to the intimate scenes shared with her leading co-stars, Choi Ji-woo was repeatedly faced with verbal attacks from fans of Jang Dong-gun, Ahn Jae-wook etc. "I was really depressed then but as I garnered my own fans, they started to fend off such remarks on my behalf."

Choi Ji-woo is also the reputed queen of tears. She recalled a filming scene in the snow when she had cried continuously for six hours. "I do have an abundance of tears", she said.

[THE HIGH TIDE OF THE KOREAN WAVE(23)-HERALD INTERVIEW]

Ryu Si-won says it's all about adapting to Japan

In the last few years, Korean films, TV dramas and pop music have become immensely popular abroad, a phenomenon known as the Korean Wave. This is the 23rd in a series of essays by a select group of scholars and journalists looking at the spread of Korean pop culture in Southeast Asian countries and beyond. - Ed.

The increasing popularity of Korean pop culture throughout Asia has led some Korean entertainers to spend more time each year in Japan or China than in their mother country. Examples include Ryu Si-won and Jang Na-ra.

"I find staying in Japan as comfortable as on Jeju Island or in Busan," said Ryu, a singer and actor whose popularity in Japan rivals that of Bae Yong-joon, who is known by his Japanese fans as Yonsama. "Of course I miss my Korean fans and friends," he told the Korea Herald

Looking back on when he launched his career in Japan four years ago, he said that Korea's image has soared in Japan over time, thanks to the unprecedented popularity of Korean pop culture. "I heard some Korean people living in Japan say they've become more proud of being Koreans because of those Korean stars. I'm so proud to hear that, as well," said Ryu, 35.

The multi-talented star, however, doesn't want to be called a Hallyu (Korean Wave) star anymore. "Hallyu's success story is not indicative of individual Korean stars' popularity in Japan and elsewhere outside Korea. In fact, Korean pop culture, as a whole, is gradually losing its competitive edge in Japan." continued Ryu.

According to him, Japanese broadcasters have recently done less coverage of Korean stars than they did a few years ago. "Korean Wave, as a new cultural trend, helped me a lot when I made my debut in Japan, but from now on, the key to the success of Korean entertainers in Japan is tailoring their work to that locale," emphasized Ryu.

In fact, his efforts to fit into Japanese market have been recognized as a perfect example for younger Korean entertainers targeting overseas markets. "I didn't want to take advantage of the Korean Wave from the beginning, so I decided to make everything Japanese-friendly, as if I were a rookie Japanese entertainer, rather than a Korean star," said Ryu, who speaks pretty fluent Japanese during his concerts.

Having debuted here in the KBS drama "Feeling (Neukkim)," Ryu shot to stardom with another KBS show called "Propose" (1997), for which he won the Most Popular Actor of the Year award. Although his singing talent had not been known until his debut in Japan, Ryu surprised even his most devoted Korean fans when he became the first Korean male 'singer' to top the Oricon Daily Charts on the day of the release of his single "Sakura" in 2005.

200803180012ts1.gif

"Do I prefer singing to acting? It's hard to tell. I love the feeling of intimacy a concert creates between me and my fans, but I also love acting because it allows me to tell a lot of different stories," Ryu continued. His fourth album, "With You," topped the Japanese HMV's (a leading specialist retailer of music) album-booking chart last May, and took the second spot on the Oricon Daily Charts a month later.

Meanwhile, he also pursued his career as an actor in Japan. The star of "Beautiful Days" (2001) -- an SBS drama that became a huge hit in Japan when it was aired on NHK in 2004 -- made his debut in a Japanese soap opera with the NHK drama, "Dondo Bare (Getting Clearer)," in which he played the role of a Korean star staying at an inn.

Since last year, he has been appearing on the TBS weekend drama "Joshi Deka! (Female Detectives)," which features Pinko Izumi and Yukie Nakama as a pair of women detectives. Both as an actor and singer, his popularity in Japan has become something of a phenomenon.

Earlier this year, Ryu was selected as the best "ideal boyfriend" in a weekly entertainment survey conducted by the Japanese newspaper Yomiuri Shimbun. According to the survey, Ryu was ranked tops in the category of "the actor most women wish to date."

"He is very smart, as far as acting is concerned," said Pinko Izumi, the veteran Japanese actress who stars with him in "Joshi Deka!" "While shooting the drama, he was always surrounded by so many female fans. Now I can see why."

The Korean Tourism Organization, a state-funded group which promotes Korean tourism around the world, estimates that he alone attracts more than 10,000 Japanese tourists to Korea every year. This is why he was appointed by the KTO as goodwill ambassador to Japan three years ago.

"I'm honored. I will do my best to promote Korea and Korean culture in Japan," he said. Last year, a Japanese travel agency introduced a package including a visit to his old family house in Andong in North Gyeongsang Province -- an old, traditional Korean-style house that even Queen Elizabeth visited during her time in this country in 1999.

"It's something I should appreciate my ancestors for," he said. "My parents (his father, who guided the queen in Andong, along with Ryu, died four months ago) were so conservative and strict about etiquette education," explained Ryu, whose trademark politeness and gentlemanly manner appeals to his fans in Japan and here.

Ryu is the only Korean artist who is a licensed international race car driver, and he has a stable of fast cars and racing bikes. He also had a cook book published some years ago, and loves to cook.

200803180013nq3.gif

"Racing is more than a hobby. My career as a professional racer also means a lot to me," he said. "Currently, I'm also in love with my DSLG camera. I'm still learning, but I hope I can publish my own photo album someday."

Ryu, who finished his fifth regular album recently, is scheduled to give 30 concerts in 18 Japanese cities starting in May. "I've been too busy to take a sightseeing trip in Japan. But I'd love to visit Mount Fuji and enjoy famous Japanese hot springs," he said.

I think I've read about the role of Lee Minchul was meant for another actor from fans' discussion at one time. I didn't join in then as I was still new to everything on the internet and to the Korean entertainment especially. But again.. reading this write-up from beaudays.tripod.com (such an excellent site for BD, for English-speaking fans).. we've learnt so much about the production, the cast, etc.. that's just so wonderful to have for the series. And so heartwarming because itss LBH we see in Beautiful Days and not someone else. His character was flawed and never perfect as he wanted it to be but undeniably, the acting performance was definitely top-notch.

Anyway.. back to LBH.. just proves that he is such a versatile actor who actually made the character Minchul his own, so good and so real.. as if it was meant for him in the first place and only him. Would BD be what it is without LBH? Maybe.. maybe not .. who knows. But for an actor who can turn around an arrogant perception of a character to someone so incredibly intense and affected that we're crying out our hearts for him, the role is indeed LBH's and no other would be able to be Minchul the way he is.

Love or hate him, Lee Byung Hun as Lee Min Chul is a perfect 10.

our thanks to zoeve for the original cake capture ^^

7th.jpg

I've just realized that cakes in Beautiful Days were never eaten :sweatingbullets: .. they're either thrown in rage or smashed by our BD heroines.

Remember the cake that Saena brought to celebrate her joining the Victory Records, specially for her and Seonjae. The same fateful night that sealed the beginnng of love blossoms between Minchul and Yeonsoo.. initiated by the intentional yet clueless phone call. :sweatingbullets:

The poor chocolate delight of a cake doesn't survive a bite being harshly tossed aside by angry Saena in one of her jealous tantrums. Quite similar to the raging Minchul who smashed the poor little handphone, not knowing what it did wrong to deserve such action.

Of course, the cake bought by Minchul to celebrate what's supposed to be the first time the Lee family birthday after a long of time apart. Unfortunately.. the tasty and lovely-looking cake somewhat took away the family's concern of the ill Yeonsoo, for awhile. But when it was smashed completely.. cake or no cake.. that's the least of their concern.

Heartfelt thanks to Ching for the awesome BD info & artwork, Linda for the warm wishes and wrblee, especially for the wonderful clip. Such love! So happy to see familiar names around. Always hoping more will join in as well with their BD thoughts, as it's always a pleasure reading them. ^^

---

No matter what.. we'll still remember Beautiful Days as the best, huh  .. one that opened up the door to such excellent actors and perfect chemistry.

If I remember correctly.. isn't Yeonsoo, just like CJW in real-life .. someone's so easy to be startled. Remember the Victory Records' overtime scene in an earlier episode.. how Minchul made her jump.. by switching the music up.. in the still of the night while she was so engrossed in her work. Minchul saw it as the chance to see her work, to find out more about the girl. And in another scene after that.. he startled her again with a hot cup of coffee. So unexpectedly warm, after scaring the girl out of her skin.. like.. literally. ^^

And.. didn't JW earn her nickname 'rabbit' because of this.. even the slightest unexpected action of others would make her jump so easily. I think this was what happened at the LV party in HK recently. The sudden hug from behind, in a big glamour party no less.. definitely made her so surprised but thinking that it's a public event amongst international stars and celebrities, never to push anyone away.. she did the peace-sign sportingly, just like what most Korean celebs would do. However.. the good-natured & fun picture unexpectedly became opportunists' pot of gold, laden with poison words. A heartless domino-effect affecting all the photos & articles that came after.

Anyway.. with good faith, hopefully.. whatever's been bugging Jiwoo-ssi just recently will eventually evaporate like a gush of mindless chill air in the morning, replaced by warmer and brighter days. It's unfortunate that she had been picked to bits by the Chinese media recently, in such harsh words twisting her goodwill appearance. What started off as a great LV launch in HK became a 'personality' attack by some of the media hawking the event. I'm sure JW is troubled by the whole unexpected ordeal just as her fans are equally angered & anguished by incredibly insensitive and crude remarks thrown around to sensationalize an evil plan to sell.

As much as it hurts to have to post a related article that was translated from Korean to English at the News thread due to the unfriendly nature of the content, it's needed to as those who were clueless would realize the real situation and most importantly understood why such reports even appear in the first place. It's very heartwarming to note that JW's present management had quickly issued a counter-clarification to rectify the accusations. She is in good hands.

Always wishing Ji Woo, lots of love & encouragement.

Be better, be stronger, be yourself.

Hi rubie, I also read at Chinese website that Yensoo’s role was actually intended to be Lee Mi Yeon. But due to some circumstance at that time, the role was not taken by her. Choi Jiwoo was given the role.

And the chemistry between LBH and CJW in BD was great. I can’t imagine anyone else as Lee Minchul and Kim Yensoo. I wonder if the main characters were not acted by LBH and CJW, I would ever watch BD and it would become my most loved K-drama, and my most favorite pairing LBH-CJW. :P:lol:

Dear HYC, I heard of that piece of article too, that the role of Yeon Soo was originally meant for Lee Mi Yeon. But I do not think Lee Mi Yeon (although she is an excellent actress) is a right choice of Yeon Soo, and besides she looks much older when paired with Lee Byung Hun. I doubt very much any actor and actress would have the same sensational chemistry other than LBH and CJW. They are the perfect couple of Lee Min Chul and Kim Yeon Soo. The pair is part of the success of Beautiful Days that although it has been seven years, it still draws attention from new generation and fond memory from old fans.

Dear Rubie, agree with your thoughtful comments regarding the unpleasant incident lately after the LV party. <_< Hope our Princess Ji Woo would be strong and brave enough to go through this uneasy moment, knowing that her fans support her unconditionally and faithfully..

HUH, Ching! This is really news to me :o CJW wasn't the first choice for Yeonsoo.. like.. really? This is really the first time I'm reading this and that the role was supposed to meant for Lee Mi Yeon. Like really? I know I've read about BH not the first choice for Minchul.. although I never believed it :phew: because he's just so perfect in the role.

Although LMY is quite an actress herself whom I think she's most beautiful in Harmonium in My Memory, I really can't visualize her as Yeonsoo.. especially now. I mean.. I wouldn't know how it'll turn out for me because BD was my first dose of LBH and CJW.. it could work the same "spell" or not. I can't say.. I really like JW in the role of YS because of her strong character and strength of will, that role made her shine completely and vice-versa. I don't like JW in roles like in WS.. SORRY (you may throw snowballs at me) but it's Yeonsoo that I love, JW made her who she is although the PD likes to make her cry and bawl endlessly. The same thing repeated in STH, aish.

Anyway.. I agree with Linda.. LMY .. although she's actually a bit younger than BH, she has this mature aura that makes her appear like his 'older sister' instead.. which was perfect for Addiction (I believe the role in Harmonium was also as an older colleague to BH's character). I've not seen LMY in any series (might not recognized her before) although she's more known for her empress role. I think I have an idea why LMY didn't take on BD as it was a personal time-out for her then but eventually, she took the role in Addiction to act with BH.. which lead her to win Best Actress at the Daejong the year after. Maybe, it's all fate?

CJW.. would have a great chemistry with BH.. even if, let say.. they didn't act together in BD but sometime later after that. As an actress, JW is a very quick learner and she knows the way to create a great chemistry by being comfortable acting with the leading actor, regardless who they are. Some actresses, no matter how good or beautiful they are.. sometimes, they 'overlook' the need to complement their leading men, resulting in lack of chemistry.

In most scenes of BD, LBH really commands the screen with his presence.. it's his ability to project that charisma. But in his scenes with Yeonsoo, they just complement each other like it's the most normal thing in the world. That's why Beautiful Days works for me.. always.

We all love Narae, right  .. the BEST best friend anyone could hoped for but not much was known about the actress & model herself, Lee Yoo Jin. Although I've actually seen her before BD.. in another SBS 2001 series "Love & Ambition" with Park Jung Chul, Kim Ji Soo & Kim Tae Woo.. it's only in BD that she's just sooo shining through and actually, with very beautiful appearance. In Firebird, she was LEJ's friend but.. just not the same as BD.

Anyway, glad to know that she's over the trauma & controversy surrounding her mixed background before. I've always sensed that she was mixed after watching BD but.. it wasn't made known and confirmed by LYJ herself till a few years ago, post-BD. And she was pretty much in tears and distress about the whole ordeal she had to go through because of her family background. If I remember correctly LYJ was raised by her grandfather who is actually more like a father and giving her the Korean family name. Her own biological father was a US army officer, something to that effect.

Wishing our Kang Narae a happier life with more beautiful days with her loved ones. :)

Lee Yoo-jin, "I have a boyfriend, whom I dated for 3 months"

20081152116ld5.jpg

Lee Yoo-jin, who made 3 years gap in showbiz after confessing she is of mixed blood, made a surprise announcement about her boyfriend. After making her comeback as a host in ETN "Manuel on Male Minds", she appeared in "Park Chul Show" on 11th and revealed, "I have a boyfriend, whom I dated for 3 months".

About her boyfriend, Lee Yoo-jin said, "He is the 1978-er business person whose firm life philosophy and simple living pattern made a good impression on me when we first met. We are happy to be a company of each other's presence". In addition she said, "My boyfriend hardly spends much time watching TV. He didn't know I was an actor when we first met".

Moreover, the spokesman from "Park Chul Show" said, "Lee Yoo-jin was honest about her painful past 3 years talking about the prejudice against her mixed origin and misunderstanding about drunken assault she was claimed to commit".

Meanwhile, Lee Yoo-jin's comeback show, "Manuel on Male Minds" is ETN's new program for January reorganisation period. Actor Kim Ah-joong is appointed as a model in this self-made program.

Sorry that I am joining in the discussion so late. I didn't know that bi-racial children in South Korea face hardships because they are not accepted by the society. I had never heard this before. I just watched BD and really liked Na-rae so I googled her but didn't find much information on her at all. I couldn't even find her pictures and that surprised me. It's kinda sad that racism and stereotype still exist although that's the reality. My daughter is mixed and I am hoping that she won't face harsh criticism because of her race. Where I live, interracial marriage or mixed race children are not really a big issue. I hope that Lee Yoo Jin can overcome the trial and will become stronger because of it.

Thanks for the warm words, Linda. I just love the romance of Beautiful Days and Minchul especially. In my BD-withdrawal moment, I saw the series numerous times when the airing ended on tv as I had recorded most of the episodes (missed the first few, though) and in 2006, we had BD on tv again. Even though it's Mandarin-dubbed on ntv7 Malaysia.. I saw the whole series without fail, absorbing everything again.

I think I just love to talk about BD.. makes us see how others are taking it and a matter of agree/disagreeing with the points, rationally. Lee Minchul without a doubt the magnet pulling power of BD, the force of a classic romance.

I believe.. Minchul sets himself from being too close with anyone right from the beginning. Only with Minji, he is who he is. But at home with the family or at work in Victory Records, he puts himself directly as Director Lee and no other. It's his shield from getting too soft in the business that he had to prove himself in. Especially to the father who had unjustly favor another son over MC, the firstborn. But when he's with Minji.. he's totally different. And thinking of Minji's own good, he had to find someone suitable for her.. as a mentor/tutor of sort, that's how he sees Yeonsoo at first.

They (MC and Minji) had no relations to Yeonsoo, so it would be perfect for them. No 'strings' attached.. no feelings involved.. or so he thought.

main_img_05.jpg

image from nhk

Also.. I remember kdramafanusa's question before about the night at the beach.. did something happened between MC and YC.. after that incredibly passionate first kiss? I think most of us would not dispute the fact that nothing happened despite the extremely intense moment they had together. Some may say.. MC was only teasing Yeonsoo or testing her.. just because.

But.. I'm still thinking.. about it.. maybe.. there MIGHT be the tendency to go further. Obviously, led by Minchul. Looking at the situation this way.. he's a man.. she's a woman.. together ..

We've not seen MC with any other woman.. no past girlfriends, etc.. but it's not impossible, right. The only problem that keeps MC without a social life is that he's a workaholic. He thinks nothing of the opposite sex, spending all his time at the company.. day in and day out. But now.. there's this beautiful woman with him, alone. What's on his mind? I would think he's (somehow) quite interested in her. Knowing how she responded to the kiss in the car.. obviously a man like him know straightaway?

But.. I think common sense got the best of Minchul. Seeing that YS was indeed a bit hesitant when she put her hand out.. it pulls back MC of his intention (whatever it was). He remembers that this is the tutor for Minji whom he had personally chose. It wouldn't be fair to put pressure in Yeonsoo that might affect Minji in the end. And Yeonsoo is just so naive and clueless when it comes to love or feelings of such. Minchul is no saint nor is he perfect but he is someone 'grounded' with sense of responsibility.

Like zoeve mentioned earlier.. the girl doesn't know if someone is flirting with her, right at her face. What more with a heavy seduction.. which could frighten the poor soul. But MC sensed the true emotions of Yeonsoo, she will only follow her heart.. as how she responded to their kiss. I still say it's common sense that put a stop to Minchul's action.. this is the woman who dares to defy him (the phone incident) but also someone who'd give everything to him. Thinking of the complication that might occur due to hasty actions, as someone who should have knowqn better.. Minchul relied on his common sense than to follow his heart's spur of the moment.

d0049493_13485393.jpg

image from miuchinyu

But.. by morning.. seeing that YS is still with him (well, where can she go ^^).. gave MC the sense of certainty that he should never let go of Yeonsoo, ever. In their own unspoken action.. two hearts have become one.

Some may not agree to this.. let's talk about it.

Happy 100 to all BD lovers. rbhcool.gif

May we reach another 100 of awesome sharing.. that would truly be Beautiful Days for everyone.

Rubie, I see that you put a lot of thought into this controversial scene. B) I have to completely agree with you. Another reason why I think nothing had happened between MC and YC at the beach is actually exhibited in their first night together as husband and wife. YC looked so nervous in her lingerie as MC was touching her skin and pulling her closer to him. Come on...if they did sleep together even once, would have YC been so stiffed and uncomfortable? haha.. :D

^ Hello AllforCJW! Welcome to soompi.com and to Beautiful Days, especially. :D So happy to see you here.. no worries at all. Better late than never, right? It's always a pleasure talking and sharing about Beautiful Days.

Yup.. their first night demonstated the 'status' of their relationship. The awkwardness of Minchul was just hilarious. He's just as nervous as his beautiful bride. :P

Looking forward to reading your thoughts on Beautiful Days. Please do not hesitate to share everything.

Where I live, interracial marriage or mixed race children are not really a big issue. I hope that Lee Yoo Jin can overcome the trial and will become stronger because of it.

There's also a very popular singer in Korea, Yi In Soon (the drama series "InSoon is Pretty" is loosely referring to her).. who's been singing for almost 30 years. She's mixed as well and had gone through a whole lot of discrimination because of her appearance is different from the usual Koreans. But she's now stronger than ever and very well-loved by her fans and the public, alike.

We surely hope that people will no longer biasedly emphasize on any appearance of race in the future and accept everyone as equal.. after all, all of us have the same red blood. Indeed.. it shoudn't be an issue.. at all.

Hope your girl will be stronger, with better consideration and to enjoy life fully, with full support & understanding.. she will do well. :)

Btw, please don't take this the wrong way.. rubie had to be the bad one here.. .. we have this general rule at the forum that we're not suppose to quote the images from the previous posting. I know it'll take awhile to understand and practise this.. so, no rush.. ya. :sweatingbullets: Even some of the regular and non-newbie members have trouble following this step, too.

Whenever there's an image in a post that we quoted.. indicated as xxxx... simply edit out the tags as shown or just delete the whole image link so that the image doesn't appear in the quote like the original message.. just for the images. For more, please refer forum rules.

Really sorry that I have to mention this because the Moderators might issue us a warning because of image-quoting. It's been a precaution at forums as big & active as soompi.com because posting the pictures/images will take up a lot of bandwidth. That's why we have to avoid repeating the images as we quote them.

Hope my explanation doesn't go around and around. I have the tendency to go on a long-winding road.. everytime. :sweatingbullets: So.. feel free to ask about anything at all, we'll be happy to help in any way possible.

Anything at all, just shout it out.. ok.. and we'll come running.

Again.. Welcome to Beautiful Days, for a continuous wonderful sharing of an excellent romance.

:P:lol:

hi hyc

me too, my first most loved k-drama of all time, i guess! haven't watched one that could top it as of the moment. oh BD, what have you done to me? hahaha. i'll always love minchul and yeonsoo's beautiful days the rest of my life : )
