rubie
^ That is great highlight, Sung-ja! Awesome! But someone help me.. I can't play anything.. WMP or RealPlayer version. --- also September 16, 2008 Korean Movies Bring Period Pieces to Life -- there's a VOD for this article at Arirang.. .. qwas? Korean movie makers are digging into the past for inspiration. The recent trend in the film industry is all about transforming historic facts and events into fictional stories. Director Jung Jiwoo tries to bring Seoul to life during the 1930s in his latest movie "Modern Boy". The filmmakers say they had a difficult time finding remnants of the past which was crucial for recreating the capital during Japanese Imperial rule which was then called, Kyungsung. In the end the crew turned to modern-day technology such as three-dimensional computer graphics to fill in the details. Award-winning director Kim Yoojin goes back to the Chosun Dynasty era in his latest film "Project 1448". The highlight of the movie is the actual-size recreation of a weapon designed during the era ruled by King Sejong the fourth king of the 500-year dynasty best remembered for creating the Korean alphabet hangul. Records on the weapon are considered to be one of the oldest in the world with its ability to shoot arrows in succession almost like a bazooka. The filmmakers took actual drawings from 1448, to build the weapon all for the sake of adding realism to the movie. Their hard work and effort certainly won't go unnoticed as it will be donated to the National Science Museum after the film is completed. The Korean western "The Good, The Bad, The Weird" by director Kim Jiun is action-packed with scenes being shot on location in China's Gobi Desert. The makers of the film say shooting took more than one-hundred days in the sandy wind-blowing desert which despite the hardships made it all the more worthwhile. Sam Len, Arirang News. rubie
Thanks to the highlight by deka_if at the News thread September 18, 2008 Three Korean movies invited to the London Film Festival Three Korean films, including the much-acclaimed The Good, the Bad, the Weird (directed by Kim Ji-woon), have been invited to the The Times BFI 52nd London Film Festival (LFF) to be held in Britain from Oct. 15 to 30. According to the list of films invited to this year's festival released on the LFF Secretariat's webpage, The Good, the Bad, the Weird was invited to the "Film on the Square" division and two other Korean films, Night and Day (directed by Hong Sang-soo) and Hansel and Gretel (directed by Yim Phil-sung) were invited to the "World Cinema" division. The "Film on the Square" section introduces noticeable new releases around the world, while the "World Cinema" division shows movies that reflect the current trends in cinema. The Good, the Bad, the Weird was inspired by Sergio Leone's classic 1966 spaghetti Western The Good, the Bad, the Ugly, starring Clint Eastwood. The story line follows three Korean men and their entanglement with the Japanese army, Chinese and Russian bandits, accompanied by many exciting action scenes set in Manchuria in the 1930s. The movie was screened in the gala section at the Cannes film festival this year and it is reported to have received a standing ovation. Meanwhile, Hong's Night and Day is the story about a painter who has fled to Paris. Kim Young-ho plays the runaway artist while Park Eun-hye plays an art student studying in France. Hansel and Gretel by Yim is a thriller. The London Film Festival marks its 52nd anniversary this year and is a prestigious international film festival, where about 300 films from 60 countries are shown annually.
