7 K-Drama Endings We Still Can’t Get Over

7 K-Drama Endings We Still Can’t Get Over

There are many times when we watch a K-drama and are so invested in it that when we get near the end, we don’t want it to be over. Sometimes, the endgame brings us an immense amount of heartache, bittersweetness, and longing for more. Here are seven K-dramas where fans have expressed that the ending was too much to handle emotionally and are still reeling from the effects of it.

Warning: Spoilers for the dramas ahead!

6. “What Happened in Bali”

something-happened-in-bali.jpeg

Ha Ji Won plays Soo Jung, a poor travel agent who is working in Bali trying to make ends meet. She meets Kang In Wook (So Ji Sub) and Jung Jae Min (Jo In Sung) in Bali, and the three get entangled in a serious love triangle.

Probably one of the most shocking endings of all K-dramas, “What Happened in Bali” has an ending that no one could have predicted. The series is a makjang, making it very dramatic and emotional with an intense love triangle at the forefront. The ending involves murder, blood, jealousy, and rage – all components that make for a noteworthy and fiery ending. There is hardly a K-drama that can top this one in terms of ending things off with a bang.

*** On July 6, tvN's television show 'You Quiz on the Block' released a trailer for the show's next episode. In the trailer, the next week's guest Park Kyung-rim was seen talking about the time when she led 'New Nonstop'.  There she shared that she used to make excuses to practice loving scenes with JIS more than they needed to. This was a sitcom  where they acted as a couple. I'm sure that every girl in Korea was jealous of her because she got to film lots of loving scenes, including kissing scenes with JIS. She said that when she first heard that she was going to act in the sitcom as his girlfriend, she couldn't be happier and it was just a great role for her. She told JIS to keep practicing their scenes before the actual shooting.' After they practiced together, she would ask him what he thought of it, then would asked him if he wanted to practice it one more time. She was laughing telling this story.  Upon hearing her honest story from the past, the hosts burst into laughter.   :heart2:

5 K-Dramas That Explore Lesser-Known Disabilities And Mental Illnesses

We don’t often see these representations in K-Dramas.

Recently, the K-Drama Extraordinary Attorney Woo has started a lot of meaningful conversations around the representation of people with autism in Korean media. Similar discussions were sparked around other shows, such as It’s Okay Not To Be Okay and The Good Doctor, that portrayed characters who are on the spectrum.

However, K-Dramas are not new to exploring these issues through their storytelling. Some other K-Dramas in the past have also made honest attempts to bring certain mental disorders and disabilities into light that are worth a watch.

1. It’s Okay That’s Love

This 2014 series portrays three different characters with distinctive mental health issues. Jang Jae-yeol (played by Jo In-sung) is a bestselling novelist and a successful radio DJ who is battling Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and schizophrenia.  Ji Hae-soo (played by Gong Hyo-jin), the love interest of Jae-yeol, battles anxiety and Genophobia (a fear of sexual intercourse). Hae-soo’s housemate Park Soo-kwang (played by Lee Kwang-soo) is a cafe waiter who has Tourette syndrome. The story revolves around these three along with two other main characters, Jo Dong-min (played by Sung Dong-il) and Han Kang-woo (played by Do Kyung-soo).

The drama’s plot is woven intrinsically with the psychological issues the protagonists are dealing with and how they struggle to find love in the process. In the 2014 year-end Content Power Index’s (CPI) top 10, It’s Okay, That’s Love ranked third due to great appreciation from viewers.

HAPPY JO IN SUNG DAY: 3 BEST MOMENTS OF HIS CHARACTER ‘JANG JAE YEOL’ FROM ‘IT’S OKAY THAT’S LOVE’

spacer.png

Jo In Sung’s character in ‘Its Okay That’s Love’ was of Jang Jae Yeol, who is a bestselling mystery fiction novelist and radio DJ. Because of his troubled past and obsessive–compulsive disorder, Jae Yeol can only sleep in his own bathtub. From his first meeting with psychiatrist Ji Hae Soo (Gong Hyo Jin) on a talk show, they have had a combative relationship. When noise from ongoing construction beside his house interrupts his writing, and he learns that Hae Soo is currently a tenant living in a building he owns in Hongdae, Jae Yeol temporarily moves in with her and her housemates because of his fascination with her. As the two fall in love, they must later come to grips with Jae Yeol's undiagnosed schizophrenia.

Warning: Mentions of schizophrenia, suicide, murder, abuse

1. His character development

Jang Jae Yeol is a pompous and arrogant man who is very confident in his skills and it's evident in all the conversations he has. He is also aware of his effect on women and tends to turn on the charm wherever he goes but all that fails when he comes across Ji Hae Soo, he is able to gain perspective on his life and his habits. By the end, he became a more mellowed out version of himself.

2. His relationship with Han Kang Woo (EXO’s D.O)

Jang Jae Yeol has attachment issues but he found himself drawn to Han Kang Woo because he reminded him of himself and he was set out to help him in ways he’d want to be helped when he was that age. It was, however, revealed that Han Kang Woo is a product of schizophrenia and since then, the trouble Han Kang Woo got in was directly proportional to his childhood trauma taking a physical form. This gives the viewers a closer view into schizophrenia, its origin as well as the different types of it.

3. His past

As previously mentioned, Jae Yeol had a less-than-convenient childhood and as he had suppressed all the painful memories, he channeled the rage into his work, making him a successful writer but the unhealthy outlet led to a number of problems but one of the marks of his trauma was in the form of his older brother who blamed his for all the misfortunes he suffered because unlike Jae Yeol, Jae Beom lives with his skeletons. served eleven years in prison after being found guilty of killing their abusive stepfather. Jae Beom has maintained his innocence through the years, but after being released, he repeatedly stabs his brother, and gets sentenced to another 30 months in jail. Violent and unstable, Jae-beom can't wait to get out of prison and get his revenge on Jae Yeol, whom he believes is the real murderer.

Sometimes through the influence of Korean entertainment, there are times when various stigmas in South Korea are challenged. Whether it be stigmas about mental illness or stigmas relating to suicide, disabilities, and the LGBTQ+ community, it is always encouraging to see K-dramas bringing these topics to light. Although K-dramas sometimes don’t do the issues much justice, they still ignite conversations. There are a lot of K-dramas, especially in recent years, that touch on a lot of these issues, but here are seven K-dramas that really spark discussions and awareness.

Drama production costs are skyrocketing.

There are various factors that increase production cost. (1) Actors’ appearance fees and (2) staff costs to improve the working environment increased, and (3) post-production costs increased due to the strengthening of computer graphics (CGI).

A high-ranking official from a mid-sized production company said, "Some Hallyu stars demand 700 million won to 800 million won for appearances per episode when they appear in OTT works."

As production costs increase, works that have invested more than 20 billion won will be released one after another after the second half of this year...  As the market has grown due to global OTT's entry into Korea such as Netflix and Disney+, the production cost of dramas has also jumped. Disney+ has invested 50 billion won in the superpower action hero "Moving." After casting and planning top stars such as Ryu Seung-ryong and Jo In-sung one after another, the filming was completed last month, and it was found that they were considering the timing of the release.
