Cautious optimism as Filmart winds up

Deals done for Universe's 'Warriors,' CJ 's 'Haeundae'

HONG KONG -- In a market characterized by caution in tough economic times, a flurry of mostly intra-Asian deals closed Wednesday at Hong Kong Filmart, led by Universe Films' sale of all India and Philippines rights to the Pang brothers' $14.6 million film "The Storm Warriors" to PT Parkit Co.

Universe also sold PT the Singapore and Malaysia rights to Benny Chan's $10 million picture "City on Alert."

Korean heavyweight CJ Entertainment, meanwhile, closed deals for its big-budget disaster movie "Haeundae," including presale with Indonesia's Visicom Surya that covers the rights for Malaysia and Singapore as well as the home territory. Indo Overseas has taken the film, along with "The Good, the Bad, the Weird" for India. CJ also inked an agreement for "Members of the Funeral" with Australia's SBS TV.

At the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center, Winnie Tsang, managing director of Hong Kong's Golden Scene, said that signing deals took longer than normal this year and there have been fewer presales.

"Everyone is taking longer to consider, to wait and see," Tsang said.

Many buyers from territories whose currencies have dropped against Asian markets were found to be pinching pennies. Buyers from Mexico, Brazil and Russia, for instance, cannot afford to buy what they might have last year, said Fabien Westerhoff of London-based HanWay Films.

Meanwhile, Hong Kong's Mega Vision sold the remake rights to Keung Kwok-man's "Bullet and Brain" to an undisclosed U.S. independent studio and Indonesia's Rapi Films sold the video rights to a package of 11 horror titles to Thailand's GMM International. Rapi also sold the theatrical rights to "Ghost Train" to Taiwanese cinema operator Long Shong Group.

Rapi executive Gope Samtani reflected on his company's luck, noting that when the economy was stronger last year, they'd completed no sales, while "this year there is financial trouble all around the world, but we managed to have sales. So it really depends on the right product."

Japanese independent Hexagon said it has closed a deal for China on "Kana's Big Success" and is close to a number of Asian pacts for "High Kick Girl!" which has been generating a lot of buzz through the market.

"Filmart has been good for a smaller company like us this year, only our second year at the market," Hexagon's Megumi Fukuda said.

Thailand's Phranakorn Films sold all rights in Taiwan and Hong Kong for slasher title "Meat Grinder" to Taiwan's Deep Joy Entertainment. While Thailand's Right Beyond sold TV and video rights for "Diamond Eye" and "Mr. Tim Muay Thai Fighter" to Hungary's Paradigma Film as well as video rights for "King Cobra" and "Black Panther" to NSR of Malaysia.

Shanghai-based Tooncool Digital sold the animated series "Mushrooom Diandian" to Thailand's Mahakit Global Plus for five-year TV rights, two-year DVD rights, one-year merchandise rights and one-year promotional rights. Also sold were one-year TV rights to Kinotour Studio of Ukraine.

China's Hairun Movies & TV sold all rights for "To Live and Love" and "Dancing Girl" to Hong Kong-based Arnos Digital.

I read that the budget for "Haeundae" is 15 billion won, for "Jeon Woo Chi" it's 12 billion won, two of the most expensive Korean movies ever)

I only remember that they were over 10 billion each, I didn't know the exact numbers. Hope both of them will do well at the box office & are well made too.

CJ Ent. Makes Waves at HK FILMART

The film sales arm of Korean major CJ Entertainment did brisk business at the Hong Kong FIILMART, closing deals on a slew of titles including pre-sales for its big-budget disaster film Haeundae going to Indonesia’s VSG for rights over Malaysia, Singapore and home territory.

The Busan-set CGI driven film about a tsunami that hits the popular Korean beach resort of Haeundae, boasts a top cast of SOL Kyung-gu (Oasis), HA Ji-won (Duelist), PARK Joong-hoon (Radio Star), and UHM Jung-hwa (Princess Aurora). JK Youn (Miracle on 1st Street) directs with Hollywood master Hans Ulrich (Star Wars 4 & 5, The Day After Tomorrow) supervising CGI.

Haeundae also sold to Indo Overseas along with KIM Jee-woon western The Good, The Bad, The Weird for India. CJ also sold KANG Woo-suk thriller Public Enemy Returns to Palisades Tartan for the US and UK, and JUN Yun-su’s erotic period drama Portrait of a Beauty to UniArt for Japan. CJ also signed an agreement with Australia’s SBS TV for indie-film Members of the Funeral.

CJ unveils Cannes market lineup

Led by 'Mother,' 'Thirst,' co-pros and genre films

SEOUL--CJ Entertainment will lead its Cannes Film Market next month with "Mother" and "Thirst," two of the most anticipated South Korean films opening this year.

At Cannes from May 13-24, "Mother," director Bong Joon-ho’s ambitious follow up to "The Host" (2006), is the story of a widow trying to prove her son's innocence after he becomes a murder suspect.

In "Thirst," director Park Chan-wook adds the offbeat romance of his previous work "I’m a Cyborg, But That’s Okay," to the story of a small-town priest reborn as a vampire who has an affair with his friend's wife.

CJ's Cannes lineup also will feature a handful of coproductions scheduled for market screening, including Ema Jin's co-pro with China, "Sophie’s Revenge," starring Zhang Ziyi ("Memoirs of a Geisha"), and "Sayonara Itsuka" by John H Lee ("Cut Runs Deep"), starring Hidetoshi Nashijima ("La Maison De Himiko").

CJ also will take Korean genre films to Cannes, including "Private Eye," a period crime thriller about a physician secretly practicing his autopsy skills with a body he found in the woods, featuring Hwang Jung-min ("A Good Lawyer's Wife"). "Castaway on the Moon" (previously called "Kim’s Island"), directed by Lee Hey-Jun ("Like a Virgin"), is about a man who finds contentment on a deserted island and "Parallel Life," by Kwon Ho-young, is about a judge entangled in a murder case.

J.K. Youn's "Haeundae," a disaster movie that sold to 11 countries at the Hong Kong Filmart, also will go to Cannes.

SYNOPSIS

Located on the Southeast of the Korean peninsula is the international city of Busan. A popular vacation spot on the East Sea coast, Haeundae draws one milion visitors to its beaches every year. Man-sik, a native of Haeundae, went deep-sea fishing four years before and lost a co-workier in a tsunami; he has never returned. He now leads a simple life running a small sushi shop and is preparing to propose to his longtime girlfriend, Yeon-hee. While these seemingly banal domestic affairs unfold, geologist KIMHwi, an expert on tsunami research, discovers the East Sea is showing signs of activity similar to the Indian Ocean at the time of the 2004 tsunami. Despite his warnings, the Disaster Prevention Agency affirms that Korea is in no harm of being hit. When he discovers a super tsunami starting in Tsushima, Japan is headed stratight for the Korean peninsula, he quicklu heads down to Haeundae. Eventually, KIM gets a call about a deadly oncoming wave, with only ten minutes to spare! While the vacationers and citizens of Busan are enjoying a peaceful, hot summer day, a super-tsunami is headed straight for Haeundae.

New Poster Revealed For “Haeundae”

The upcoming disaster movie, Haeundae, has released its latest promotional poster, containing two of its stars, Seol Kyung Ku and Ha Ji Won. The blockbuster, which is about a tsunami that hits Korea and, of course, brings disastrous consequences, is looking toward a July premiere.

Besides Seol Kyung Ku and Ha Ji Won, the movie also stars Park Joong Hoon, Uhm Jung Hwa, and Lee Min Ki (*heart*). The director, Yoon Jae Kyun, also directed Ha Ji Won’s previous films Miracle On 1st Street and Sex Is Zero. (That list of past works doesn’t inspire much confidence, does it?)

I’ll say it right now: I’m not a fan of disaster movies in general. In fact, I’m not really a fan of big-budget blockbusters, period. They often fail at satisfying me as a viewer. Still, there are some actors in this that I like (especially Lee Min Ki aka Mr. Cutie Pie), so I’ll probably be watching it. Besides, that sure is a nice poster, no?

Since Korean Movie are pretty popular in SE asia......I wonder how it would be recieve in those area that has been hit by the tsunami a few years back....

해운대에 쓰나미가 닥친다면 과연 어떤 일이 벌어질까. 그것도 100만 명에 달하는 인파가 콩나물시루처럼 밀집한 여름휴가 철에 말이다. 한국에서라면 결코 상상조차 하기 힘든 일이지만, 2004년 쓰나미가 인도네시아를 강타하던 그 순간, 해운대에 있던 윤제균 감독은 바로 그곳에 쓰나미처럼 거대한 재난이 온다면 어떤 일이 벌어질까 궁금해졌다.

<두사부일 체>로 조폭 코미디의 새 장을 열고, <색즉시공>으로 섹시 코미디의 흥행 신화를 일군 윤제균 감독은 지난 2006년 <1번가의 기적>을 만들면서 <해운대>의 시나리오를 구상했다. 할리우드 블록버스터에 견주어도 전혀 손색없을 한국형 재난 블록버스터를 만들겠다는 윤제균 감독의 야심찬 도전이 시작되는 순간이었다.

설경구와 하지원, 박중훈과 엄정화 등 화려한 연기파 배우들이 대거 캐스팅된 <해운대>는 지난 2008년 8월, 부산 토박이가 된 설경구와 하지원의 평화로운 일상으로 촬영을 시작해 12월, 설경구 일행이 쓰나미의 거대 파도에 휩쓸리는 중요한 장면을 샌프란시스코에서 찍는 것을 마지막으로 5개월여에 걸친 촬영 대장정을 모두 끝냈다.

해운대를 덮치는 거대한 쓰나미를 최대한 사실적으로 만들어내기 위해 윤제균 감독은 <투모로우> <퍼펙트 스톰> 등에 참여한 할리우드의 CG 프로듀서 한스 울릭을 영입했고, 한국 CG의 자존심인 모팩 스튜디오와 함께 스펙터클한 비주얼을 만들어가는 중이다. 상상만으로도 짜릿한 볼거리가 기대되는 한국형 휴먼 재난 블록버스터 <해운대>의 제작 스토리를 윤제균 감독이 직접 들려주었다.

▶차곡차곡 쌓이는 경험과 노하우

이 장면은 미국 샌프란시스코 특수 수조 세트에서 촬영된 장면. 구조대원 형식(이민기)이 태풍이 몰아치는 바다 한가운데서 그의 연인 희미(강예원)를 구조하는 중이다. 정말 우리나라에서 촬영하고 싶었으나 바다에서 어떻게 찍어야 되는지 그 어느 누구도 알지 못했고, 바다 같은 대형 수조 세트를 만드는 데에만 10억 원이 넘는 돈이 든다고 하니 어쩔 수 없이 할리우드의 힘을 빌리기 위해 미국에서 찍어야 했다.

하지만 이들은 넓은 주차장에 얇은 철판 몇 장을 조립해서 하루 만에 뚝딱 대형 수조를 만드는 게 아닌가? 나는 어이가 없어서 그들에게 물었다. “아니 할리우드 영화도 이렇게 찍어요?” 한스 울릭이 말했다. “<캐리비안의 해적>도 여기서 이렇게 찍었는데?” 그렇다. 영화라는 것은 바로 ‘콜럼버스의 달걀’이었던 것이다. 경험과 노하우만 쌓인다면 우리도 못할 것이 전혀 없는 것이다. 정말 우리가 너무 몰라서 분하고 원통했지만 동시에 너무나 많은 것을 배우고 깨달은 미국 촬영이었다.

▶여기선 절대 NG 내면 안 되걸랑요

쓰 나미가 몰아치는 거리에서 도망가는 만식과 연희를 찍는 장면. 바닥에 물을 채운 걸로 봐서 아마 세트장이라고 생각하시겠지만 이곳은 엄연히 부산 해운대 시장의 실제 거리다. 그럼 200미터도 넘는 해운대의 실제 거리에 어떻게 물을 채웠냐고? ㅎㅎ 그건 비밀이다. 사람이 생각하고 연구하고 고민하면 안 되는 일이 없다는 걸 나는 이번 영화를 통해 뼈저리게 느꼈다. 당시 난 경구 형에게 “형! 이 장면은 돈도 많이 든 데다 시간도 없기 때문에 NG 내면 안 되거든요?”라고 말하지 않았을까.ㅎㅎ

▶저 멀리 괴물처럼 다가오는 쓰나미

우 리 영화의 메인 공간인 연희의 횟집 앞에서 만식과 연희가 먼 바다에서 괴물처럼 다가오는 초대형 쓰나미를 발견하는 장면이다. 쓰나미는 CG 작업을 해야 하므로 어느 정도의 크기로 올 것이며, 배우들이 수평선의 어느 정도 높이를 봐야 하는지에 대해 논의가 많았다. 하지만 감독인 나도 높이 100미터가 넘는 초대형 쓰나미를 본 적이 없었기 때문에 철저히 배우들의 감정에 의지할 수밖에 없었다. “경구 형! 저 먼 바다에서 파도가 다가온다 생각해 봐요! 어떨 것 같아요?” 경구 형 왈, “멋있겠는데~!”ㅎㅎ

▶할리우드 재난 영화도 부럽지 않아

이 장면은 우리 기술로 만든 수조 세트장에서 촬영한 장면이다. 특히 우리나라에서는 파도 재생기가 없어 숱한 고민을 했는데 전 세계 어디에서도 볼 수 없는 특이한 파도 재생기를 만들었으니, 다름 아닌 수상스키다! 이 수상스키의 위력은 할리우드 스태프들도 감탄할 만큼 훌륭한 파도를 만들어냈고, 거기에 한국 스턴트맨들의 몸을 사리지 않는 투혼에 힘입어 쓰나미가 덮친 거리가 할리우드의 그 어떤 재난 영화와 비교해도 결코 뒤지지 않을 만큼의 리얼리티를 확보할 수 있었다. 이게 모두 다 한국 영화인들만이 가지고 있는 ‘무데뽀 정신(?)’이 만들어낸 작은 기적이 아닐까.

해운대③]헬기 외관을 500만원에 구입?

▶공포에 질린 표정이 저절로

미국 샌프란시스코 특수 촬영장에서 박중훈 씨가 호텔 17층까지 들이닥친 쓰나미 속에 갇힌 딸을 구출하는 장면이다. 물이 빠지는 순간에 창밖으로 떨어지는 딸의 손을 잡는 난이도가 높은 장면이었는데, 꼬박 이틀 동안 대여섯 컷을 건지기 위해 수많은 할리우드 스태프들이 고생한 장면이다. 창밖으로 쏟아지고 있는 저 물을 만들기 위해 세트 뒤에는 20톤이 넘는 거대한 물탱크가 버티고 있었다.

아무리 세트라 하지만 감독인 나나 박중훈 선배님이나 겁나기는 마찬가지! 20톤이 넘는 물이 10초도 안 되는 시간에 쏟아지는 상황에 현장은 긴장의 연속이었다. 하지만 감독의 주문 없이도 공포에 질린 모습은 자연스럽게(?) 잡을 수 있는 장점도 있었다는 사실! 특히 박중훈 선배님 뒤에 있는 꼬마 김유정 양이 고생을 많이 했지~.ㅎㅎ 감기에 몸살에, 불쌍한 유정이.

▶헬기 껍데기를 통째로 사다니

구 조대원 형식이 조난자를 구조하는 장면을 촬영하는 것인데 역시 미국 샌프란시스코 특수 촬영장에서 촬영했다. 헬리콥터 밑에 매달려 있는 장면인데, 난이도가 그렇게 높은 장면은 아니었지만 미국에서 헬기 구조 장면을 촬영한 데에는 이유가 있다. 한국에서 헬기 내·외부 장면을 찍을 수 있는 헬기가 없을뿐더러 한 번 빌리는 데 수천만 원이 든다는 얘기를 들었기 때문.

그런데 이번 촬영에는 한스 울릭이 아예 헬기 껍데기를 통째로 사버렸단다. 나는 깜짝 놀랐지만, 너무 놀라지 마시라. 미국에서는 헬기 촬영이 일반화된 관계로, 500만 원이면 헬기 외관을 살 수가 있단다. 이거 원, 부러운 점이 한두 가지가 아니군.

▶우리 노력으로 완성된 자랑스러운 수조 세트

쓰 나미로 물바다가 된 거리. 만식과 연희가 마지막 생과 사의 갈림길에서 서로의 사랑을 확인하는, 우리 영화의 절정 부분을 촬영하는 장면이다. 이 장면은 부산 광안리 폐수영장에서 촬영이 진행됐는데, 순수하게 한국 스태프와 기술진이 수개월의 연구와 노력 끝에 만들어낸 자랑스러운 수조 세트장이다.

한국에는 영화 촬영을 할 수 있는 거대한 수조 세트장이 존재하지 않기에 우리는 몇 개월간 머리를 맞대고 현실적인 방법을 찾았고, 전국의 폐수영장을 뒤진 끝에 물이 흘러갈 수 있는 유수 풀장을 발견하고 공사에 착수했다. 여기에서 1주일에 걸친 촬영 기간 중 한스 울릭을 비롯한 할리우드 기술 스태프들이 현장에 왔는데, 모두 믿을 수 없다는 듯 “원더풀!”을 연발했다. 우리는 다시 한 번 느꼈다. 우리가 경험이 없을 뿐이지 전 세계 그 어느 스태프보다 뛰어난 능력을 가진 영화인이라는 사실을….

So this is going to be a Korean take (location exncluded) on the Great Sumatra-Andaman Earthquake of 2004 or is it going to be a Korean version of Japanese movies Japan is Sinking and The Sinking of Japan?

It should be of the quake, because if you visit the naver site for Haeundae, there are articles as well as photos from the quake.
