Hi Bshater1, I'm still waiting patiently for the DVD...Sigh...

Quoting Variety <Pic is based loosely on the exploits of a real-life serial killer, played by Ha Jung-woo (“Never Forever”).>

Quoting The KNU Times <The movie came from events of Yoo Young-cheol, who is a serial killer, and the main plot is the confrontation between the pimp, Eom Jung-ho (who used to be a cop), and Ji young-min, who is a psychotic murderer.>

http://www.soompi.com/forums/index.php?sho...t&p=9589748

I already pre-ordered the DVD. Just one month to go! :sweatingbullets: It is also nice that the first disc contains a DTS track. Should be a nice edition with a cool slipcover. Waiting can be killing.

Hi Morty, one month can't come by fast enough. :)

definitely not the type of movie that you would rewatch over and over again for its entertainment values, like My Sassy Girl, but for a one timer, its up there with Old Boy and Friends. this movie was simply brilliant. it'll put you in awe after the credits start rolling.

“The Chaser” released legally via Internet one week before DVD release date

Posted by luna6

In a sign of the times, Korean website Cine21 has negotiated the rights to offer legal downloads of “The Chaser” via the internet starting on June 23. This is a full week before the release date for the DVD release. Cine 21 and investment company Vantage Holdings worked for 2 months to secure the rights for “The Chaser,” which is the highest grossing South Korean film so far this year.

Korean movie studios have been bleeding red for the past year and the potential to receive added revenue on top of ticket sales is a much needed boost. While film companies in the U.S. make less than 50% of their net profits from domestic movie ticket sales, South Korean companies make over 80% of their total revenues from ticket sales. Although people in Korea rent DVD’s from local neighborhood stores, sales of DVD’s have been rapidly declining. The boom of illegal file downloading has also hurt DVD’s sales considerably. If online sale of “The Chaser” become remotely successful, expect to see many more movies offered for download from authorized Korean websites. (P.S. I’m dying to see the CHASER!!!)

Daejong Film Fest Showcases Trends

By Lee Hyo-won

Staff Reporter

080629_p20_daejong1.jpg

Actor Kim Yun-seok won best actor for "The Chaser"

South Korea's esteemed 45th Daejong (Grand Bell) Film Festival held in southern Seoul, showcased the latest local box office trends, with its stronghold of original thrillers, stylistic period pieces and experimental projects. While superstars grabbed the limelight as expected, hitherto overlooked veteran actors and young debutant directors shined the most, suggesting that blatant star power, be it a reputed director or ravishing screen beauty, don't always guarantee ticket sales or awards.

The red carpet event took place outside the COEX Convention Hall in a sea of blinding camera flashes as glamorous cineastes filed in. Screen beauties like Han Chae-young, Park Jin-hee and Shin Ae were elegant in cleavage-bearing, long evening gowns while others such as Kim Yun-jin and Ko Ara chose mini-dresses to show off their figures.

Actress Kim A-jung, who won last year's award for Best Actress ("200 Pounds Beauty''), and popular announcer Choe Gi-hwan hosted the show. To add more sparkle to the star-studded event, pop group the Wonder Girls took to the stage to deliver bubbly dance music.

"The Chaser,'' the feature film debut of young director Na Hong-jin and the highest grossing film this season, took the festival by storm by winning five of 11 nominations, including those for Best Picture and Director. For Actor Kim Yun-seok, who has endlessly displayed solid acting through supporting roles, his first leading role won him both the Best Actor prize and the BMW Popularity Award. The 40-year-old dazzled the screen as a sullen, disheartened former cop opposite hot young actor Ha Jung-woo.

080629_p20_daejong2.jpg

Actress Kim Yun-jin won best actress for "Seven Days"

Another murder thriller "Seven Days,'' the latest homegrown film starring "Lost'' star Kim Yun-jin, won three of 10 nominations including Best Actress, Sound Effects and Editing. Like "The Chaser,'' it enjoyed critical acclaim and high sales at the box office earlier this year.

Awards for Best Supporting Actor and Actress went to Yoo Jun-sang ("Return'') and Kim Hae-sook ("Open City''), respectively. The latter star showed off a wild, charismatic streak as an ex-convict in "Open City,'' breaking away from her usual TV roles as a housewife. The 52-year-old, sexy in a sleek black dress on the night, also received attention for her role as a mother who falls in love with her daughter's former fiance. The romance film "Viva Love'' won director Oh Jeom-gyun the title of Best New Director and Best Screenplay.

Korean cinema and broadcasting have seen a high tide of stylistic period pieces depicting lives and loves from the Joseon Kingdom (1392-1910). The befittingly named court intrigue "Shadows in the Palace'' by debutant director Kim Mee-jung won the award for Best Lighting while "Hwang Jin Yi,'' starring actress Song Hye-kyo as the famed poet and dancer, received prizes for Best Music and Costume.

"M,'' celebrated director Lee Myung-se's striking, surreal story starring Gang Dong-won, received the Best Visuals Award. "Miracle of a Giving Fool'' starring Ha Ji-won and Cha Tae-hyun, a hit among popular cartoon-turned-movies, won the public vote for Best Hallyu (Korean Wave) Movie.

Actor Daniel Henney, who recently finished shooting his Hollywood debut in the "X-Men'' franchise, was named Best New Actor ("My Father'') and model-turned-actress Han Ye-seul won Best New Actress. A special honor went to Yoo Dong-hoon, president of the Korea Scenario Writers Association, for his lifetime contribution to Korean cinema.

Stellar Event Casts Dark Shadows

But brightness is always accompanied by dark shadows. Inefficient organization prolonged the running time of the event, and the awardees did not receive sufficient time to express their happiness.

The preceding film festival inviting moviegoers to watch movies and meet cineastes at the Seoul World Cup Stadium, May 24-28, was popular and was extended until the 30th. However, the award ceremony itself drew a rather disappointing level of public participation. The annual event recorded a relatively low viewer rating of 11.9 percent through its live broadcasting on SBS.

The ceremony caused disorder in the Samseong-dong area where roads were blocked off, and there was sharp criticism of its overly commercial tactic of charging people to vote for the Hallyu Movie Award.

2008 PiFan Announces Line-up

The 12th Puchon International Fantastic Film Festival (PiFan) is back in bigger and better form with an exciting line-up of genre films and an ambitious new project market. This year PiFan will run July 18 – 27 in its namesake city Bucheon, in Gyeonggi Province on the outskirts of Seoul.

The festival boasts a robust program of 205 films from 39 countries, including 17 World Premieres and 15 International Premieres, all under the banner of its ongoing theme, ‘Love, Fantasy and Adventure.’ The 12th edition kicks off with opener, Waltz with Bashir, an ‘animated documentary’ by Israeli director Ari Folman.

The closing film is Cyborg, She, the latest invention from Korean director KWAK Jae-yong. The new film truly fits the ‘fantastic’ bill, blending elements of sci-fi, romance, action and melodrama. The Korean-Japanese co-production stars actress Ayase Haruka as a beautiful time-traveling cyborg who enters the life of a timid university student (played by Koide Keisuke).

Korea’s second-biggest film event after the Pusan festival, has an impressive competition section with a variety of cash awards including the Puchon Choice award for best feature. Among the 12 films vying for honors is Korea’s sleeper hit The Chaser by Na Hong-jin. Films from Thailand, Malaysia, Chile, Spain, Sweden, Australia and other countries fill out this thrilling section. An accompanying Puchon Choice – Short Films will present cash awards to the best from among 12 shorts including 5 Korean shorts.

As always, the World Fantastic Cinema section presents a full spectrum of fantasy. Highlights in this program include The Machine Girl by Noboru Iguchi, a tale of a schoolgirl who takes revenge when her family is killed and her hand cut off, King of the Hill, a Spanish lost-in-the-woods thriller by Gonzalo Lopez-Gallego, Abel Danger, a tale exposing the 9/11 conspiracy by US indie-director Paul Krik, and the not-to-be-missed Hindi hit Om Shanti Om, a near 3-hour musical extravaganza starring nearly all the top names in Bollywood and directed by famed choreographer Farah Khan.

A new section titled Strange Homage selects films from acclaimed masters of the eccentric. Headlining is Korean classic The Housemaid, a 1960 feature from cinematic oddity Kim Ki-young. More contemporary additions are New Type by PiFan favourite Hiroki Ryuichi of Japan and Tom Kalin’s Savage Grace, based on a tragic true story and starring the superb Julianne Moore.

‘Off the Fantastic’ brings off-beat features from all corners of life, while ‘Forbidden Zone’ highlights cinematic extremes that pull all the stops and break taboos. ‘Family Fanta’ and ‘Ani-Fanta’ present a variety of general audience films that should delight both children and adults.

In the Special Programs section this year is a focus on US auteur Gregg Araki, screening four of his provocative features including his latest, Smiley Face, and his critically acclaimed 2004 film, Mysterious Skin. Also showcased is a spotlight on Russian contemporary genre films with six features ranging from murder-mystery to the supernatural. ‘Q-Rious’ looks at classic and new titles in queer cinema while ‘Grindhouse Revisited’ presents B-rated sexploitation and car-chase double bills from the 70s and early 80s.

Asian cinema lovers will not be let down. This year PiFan runs an ‘Asian Action Special’ featuring Korean martial arts and action flicks from the 60s to the 80s and set in Hong Kong, Korea and Japan. Another unique new retrospective sheds light on Asia’s leading production companies with the first edition, called ‘100 Years of Nikkatsu’, focusing on one of Japan’s finest production houses.

The festival, at various venues in Bucheon city, is a mere 30 minute subway ride from central Seoul. More information about the event can be found at the festival website which is available in English at: http://www.pifan.com/eng/index.asp

The Chaser

Posted by luna6

Movie: The Chaser

Release Date: February 14, 2008

Country: South Korea

Director: Hong-jin Na

Starring: Yun-seok Kim, Jung-woo Ha

Runtime: 123 min

Editor Rating: 9.0

Upon its theatrical release in Korea (Feb. 14th, 2008), “The Chaser” simply took the box office by storm and packed Korean cinema houses for 3 consecutive months. Currently the movie is the highest grossing film of the year in Korea, yet that highest grossing title doesn’t always correspond to a great film or even a decent film. Just think back to 2007 and recall that the two highest grossing films in Korea were “D-War” and “May 18.” Two films that were simply aweful. Despite that, in the case of “The Chaser,” something tells you that there must be something special about the film. The movie doesn’t possess gaudy special effects or actors that would bring many people to theatres by name alone (at least when the movie initially opened). More surprisingly, “The Chaser” centers around a serial killer, a topic that’s quite common in Korean films these days (Our Town, Seven Days, Rainbow Eyes, Black House, etc). So why exactly did “The Chaser” attract so many movie goers? The answer (please take note Korean movie execs) is found a few paragraphs below.

In “The Chaser,” a former cop turned pimp Jung-ho (Yun-seok Kim) is having one of those days. Two of his girls have gone missing (one with his car) and a third girl calls in sick. He’s strapped for cash and owes money to unscrupulous characters. Jung-ho then makes the fateful decision to call the sick girl, Min-Jin (Yeong-hie Seo) and demand that she meets another client.

Later that evening, Jung-ho drives off in his recovered Jaguar only to find the missing girl’s cell phone in his car. When he gets back to the office he looks through her phone to find out the identity of her last client. The last phone number is 016-9265-4885, the “4885″ ringing a familiar note in Jung-ho’s memory. He then checks through his client list notebook. Both of the missing girls’ last clients were 016-9265-4885 and further more… Min-jin is now meeting that same person.

What the Chaser brings to the table is a potent combination of a “you gotta grab-your-armchair” like intense script and performances from the entire cast that is worthy of “encore!” chants. The movie is directed by newcomer Hong-jin Na, a name that will likely become much better known in the coming months. The beauty of Na’s “The Chaser” is that the movie leaves out all the gimmicky parts of recent Korean thrillers (the hokey plots twists and CSI like over visuals) to focus on nothing but the core of the film: an intense chase to uncover bodies before the killer is released. Yes you heard that right. The killer is actually apprehended in the first quarter of the film! When have you seen a movie where the killer is found, chased, and then apprehended in the early portions of the movie? The real drama, certainly unique for its genre, begins once the killer is captured.

Elevating “The Chaser” to even greater heights are the performances by main actors: Yun-seok Kim and Jung-woo Ha. Yun-seok Kim as the film’s protagonist brings a performance on the level of Choi Min-sik at his finest hour. Meanwhile, Jung-woo Ha as the unstable killer gives an amazingly nuanced performance. You wont get any of the over-acting found with most serial killer performances. The normalcy that Jung-woo Ha brings to Young-min’s psychotic character feels entirely unnerving because he could be any of the “normal” guys you see walking on the streets. Supporting cast was just as good, with Yeong-hie Seo (Min-Jin), Hyo-ju Park (Detective Eun-shil) and In-gi Jeong (Detective Gil-woo) all bringing it to the table.

If there is a fault with “The Chaser” it would only lie with the film’s resolution. While the ending isn’t disappointing per se, it did seem to suddenly fall in line with the conventions of the serial killer genre..

Prior to “The Chaser,” if you were asked to name some of the best Korean thrillers ever made, you’d probably mention Jong-ho Bong’s “Memories of Murder” and Chan-wook Park’s “Sympathy for Mr Vengeance” as some of the best. After you watch “The Chaser,” you’ll likely find yourself mentioning one more movie in that group.

Cast:

Yun-seok Kim - Jung-ho

Jung-woo Ha - Young-Min Ji

Yeong-hie Seo - Mi-jin

Hyo-ju Park - Detective Eun-shil Oh

In-gi Jeong - Detective Gil-woo Lee

Yu-jeong Kim - Mi-jin’s daughter

Bon-woong Ko - Meathead

Yeong-seon Kim - Young-min’s sister

Hee-seon Son - Grocery store owner

If you like this movie you may enjoy: Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Black House, Seven Days

Best movie of 2008 for sure, I thought GP 506 was good but this made me forget all about it. I was drawn in from the moment it started. Kim Yun Seok was really good in here, and I haven't seen play many leading roles and it was phenomenal.

Film industry starts 'legal piracy' service

The Korean film industry has developed an ususual way to make money.

Unlike other markets where production companies reap sizable revenues from DVDs and other auxiliary channels, Korean films skip the potentially lucrative post-screening market and fall into a black hole of illegal online downloads once screening at theaters is over.

Leading filmmakers and actors continue to complain that rampant circulation of pirated movie files on the Web has virtually choked off DVD and rental markets, labeling illegal downloaders as major culprits for undercutting the already shaky income base of Korean movies.

The blame game, however, is not working at all. To reverse the trend - or rather ride the wave of online downloads - might offer a solution. At least, that's the logic behind a new "legal" download service launched by Cine21i, an online unit of a leading weekly film magazine.

Cine21i's approach is not to block illegal downloads altogether, which is practically and logistically impossible. Instead, it attempts to force users to pay more, almost to the level of a fee for a legal download, when the movie in question is available at the company's online movie library.

Cine21i said it has developed a file-tracking technology that identifies illegally copied movie files and then hikes the download price for the pirated file to as much as 3,000 won - the average price for a legal one.

The raised price, the company argued, would discourage consumers to download illegal files and switch their attention to the legal ones. Currently, Korean online users pay about 300 won for downloading a single illegally copied film file.

The novel strategy, in fact, reflects the Korean online download environment. Peer-to-peer file-sharing is also available, but the majority of users prefer using so-called "web hard disk" services. These websites provide a vast amount of virtual hard disk for users in the form of communities, and any member who wants to download a file mist pay a set fee.

Other companies, such as Clubbox, one of the biggest web hard disk firms, allow users to download files for free as long as the transmission speed is at a snail pace, but charges about 20,000 won per month for a broadband-level download.

Cine21i wisely chose to work together with such online download companies. It struck partnerships with 20-odd web hard disk firms for its new legal download service, which allows the users to watch a film for 30 days, or as many as five times. The price is set between 500 won and 3,000 won, depending on the release date.

To maximize the publicity effect, Cine21i began its service with "The Chaser," the biggest Korean hit in the first half of this year. The small-budget movie, armed with breathtaking chase scenes, had both critics and moviegoers praising its heart-pumping pace, which translated into a huge box-office success.

image

What's interesting, though, is that a new download service for "The Chaser" precedes the release of the film's DVD version. This faster online availability signals that the existing rules and conventions about the distribution of domestic films might go through a material change.

Traditionally, a movie gets screened at offline theaters and then enters a secondary distribution channel that starts from DVD and then moves through cable and satellite TV networks, landline TV networks and online downloads in a strict order.

Cine21i's drastic decision to go directly to online downloads, even before a DVD edition comes out, is based on the nature of online piracy. Despite software-based locks and other protective measures, online users manage to unlock DVDs and upload the pirated files on web hard disk sites, effectively killing off any motivation to buy a DVD version for many movie watchers.

Signs for a crumbling distribution order already began to surface a couple of years ago. Paid cable TV operators rushed to put out new movies on their platforms shortly after theater screening, and even local TV stations aired relatively new movies in less than six months. Previously, major TV stations waited for at least one year before airing a new movie on their networks.

Cine21i's new service, though innovative in its own right, is sparking concerns among filmmakers and distributors alike. Cine21i is teaming up with web hard disk firms, which are widely accused of have knowingly turned a blind eye to the illegal circulation of pirated movie files, but previous ventures for legal downloads collapsed because related web hard service companies did not fully cooperate.

One encouraging sign is that a growing number of online communities that share illegal movie files are being shut down, thanks to the aggressive crackdown by government authorities.

Cine21i is pinning its hope on "The Chaser" to pull of a meaningful first step toward a legitimate download service, but it remains to be seen whether the movie's breathtaking chase scenes will be powerful enough to help online users kick their addiction to illegal downloads.
