chosun.com (2008.05.21 17:39)

Yes, please keep us updated about the ceremony! After the directors and actors of "The Chaser" and "The Good, the Bad and the Weird" both received standing ovations and very good reviews, it would be the perfect ending of the festival for Korea if director Na Hong-jin wins the award. Hopefully!!!

[Talk of the town]Awards elude Korean film stars at this year’s Cannes Film Festival

May 28, 2008

27222623.jpg

"The Chaser"

So long to the 61th Cannes Film Festival, which ended last Sunday. Koreans didn’t have much reason for celebration this year.

Na Hong-jin, the director of “The Chaser” and one of the 11 candidates for the Camera d’Or (The Golden Camera Award), lost out to Steve McQueen, the director of “Hunger.”

Korean fans had hoped that another prize would follow last year’s award to Jeon Do-yeon for Best Actress in “Secret Sunshine” (2007).

Previous Korean award winners from Cannes also include Im Kwon-taek’s “Strokes of Fire” (2002), which won the Best Director Award, and “Old Boy” (2004), which won the Grand Prix.

However, there are still reasons for hope for the Korean film industry.

Director Kim Jee-woon’s “The Good, the Bad and the Weird,” which screened at the festival’s main venue last weekend, received positive responses from viewers.

The film was set in Manchuria during the Japanese colonial period and is about three Korean outlaws there in the 1930s.

It is based on Sergio Leone’s 1966 film, “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.”

The action film stars Lee Byung-hun, Song Kang-ho and Jung Woo-sung.

The updated version of the film will be released in Korea in early July.

Korean, Japanese Actors to Star in Joint Movie

By Han Sang-hee

Staff Reporter

Actor Ha Jung-woo

Two top actors, Korean Ha Jung-woo and Japanese Satoshi Tsumabuki, will join forces to star in a joint Korean-Japanese movie "Boat'' (working title).

The Korean movie production company Kraze Pictures announced that the movie will start filming June 28 with Japanese production IMJ Entertainment in Niigata, Japan.

"The movie will be filmed completely in Japan but Ha will speak Korean (in the film). It is scheduled to be in theaters next year,'' Byun Bong-hyun, the film manager at Kraze Pictures told The Korea Times.

"Boat'' depicts the story of two young Korean and Japanese smugglers who try to kidnap a Korean woman. The Korean actress has not been confirmed yet.

Korean director Kim Young-nam, who won the International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI) Award and the Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema (NETPAC) Award for "Don't Look Back'' (2006) at the 59th Locarno International Film Festival, will produce the film, while Japanese writer Aya Watanabe will work on the script.

Watanabe became popular among Japanese and Korean movie fans through movies such as "Josee, the Tiger and the Fish'' (2003) and "Mezon Do Himiko'' (2005).

The 30-year-old Ha has appeared in several films and dramas but stepped up as one of Korea's most talented actors with his performance in the hit movie "The Chaser'' (2008). Tsumabuki gained stardom in Japan and Korea with his performance in movies such as "Josee'' and "Tears for You'' (2006).

KIM Yong-hwa directs HA Jung-woo in sports drama

20080609215805.757.0.jpg

[image=asiaeconomy/daum]

Director KIM Yong-hwa –two years after his hit comedy 200 Pounds Beauty – will direct Gookkadaepyo (English translation: national representative) about a group of ski jumpers vying for the Korean national team. Next Hallyu star HA Jung-woo has been cast in the leading role.

Forever the Moment showed the potential of Korean sport films earlier this year and Koreans have a passion for their national representative athletes. Like LIM Soon-rye’s Forever the Moment, Gookkadaepyo also seems to concentrate on the emotional side of top sport and character development.

HA will play a Korean-American adoptee who returns to Korea in search of his roots. In the confusion of his visit to his unfamiliar birth country, he finds himself trying to make it into the Korean national ski jump team while in search of his identity.

The other main characters are competing athletes and are played by television actors KIM Dong-wook – from the popular television series Coffee Prince, and KIM Ji-seok. KIM Dong-wook’s character merely wants to avoid mandatory army service. KIM Ji-seok’s character is concerned with taking care of his grandmother and his sibling; he will become a good friend of HA’s character.

HA is currently in the spotlight with the box office hit The Chaser (Choogyeokja). He will also star in the upcoming Korean-Japanese co-production House, directed by KIM Young-nam. Filming of Gookkadaepyo is scheduled to start in the second half of the year.

Complex thrillers lead the pack in annual film awards

June 11, 2008

10215234.jpg

The biggest event in the Korean film industry is back.

On June 27, the 45th Daejong Film Awards will take place at COEX, southern Seoul. This year one of the Korean films under the spotlight is “The Chaser,” a film about a serial murderer.

The film drew audiences of more than 5 million, and as of April it is the most successful Korean film of 2008, according to the Korean Film Council.

“Forever the Moment” trailed behind The Chaser with over 4 million viewers.

The Chaser currently is nominated in 11 categories, hoping to win the hearts of film critics as well.

This year thrillers are garnering the most interest in Chungmuro, Korea’s Hollywood.

Currently the top three films on the most nominated lists are from this genre.

“Seven Days,” a thriller about a child who gets kidnapped, is second in the number of nominations.

The film is nominated in all 10 categories. “Shadows in the Palace,” a thriller that takes place within the palace of the Joseon Dynasty, is nominated in eight categories.

Compared with comedies, dramas or action films, thrillers lacked quality.

“Since ‘Memories of Murder’ in 2003, hardly any satisfying thrillers have been made,” said the film critic Jeon Chan-il.

“The success of these three films is good news [for the film industry] as it shows that a single genre can captivate audiences,” Jeon continued.

Thrillers are also notoriously difficult to pull off since the plots are highly complex, Jeon added.

Another point of interest is that The Chaser and Shadows in the Palace were directed by rookies who made their debut as film directors through these movies.

Seven Days is Won Shin-yeon’s third feature film. He previously directed “The Wig” and “A Bloody Aria.”

Won was chosen recently to direct “V,” a film about Korea’s most beloved robot, Taekwon V.

“Until now the Korean film industry was led by artistic directors such as Park Chan-wook and Hong Sang-soo,” said Kim Bong-seok, a film critic. “It is interesting and positive how Korean commercial films are gaining strength.”

Film fans here are currently fascinated by the best male actor award. Those vying for the award are Kim Yoon-seok, who plays the corrupt cop in The Chaser; Ha Jeong-woo, who plays the serial killer in the same movie; Song Kang-ho, who starred in the film “Secret Sunshine (Milyang)”; and Im Chang-jeong, who plays a scout who tries to recruit Korea’s famous pitcher, Sun Dong-yeul, in the black comedy “Scout.”

Kim from The Chaser won the best supporting actor award last year for his role as the devious card player in “The War of Flower.”

Competition for the best female actor award is expected to be fierce. One of the nominees is Kim Hye-sook, 53.

Kim has been nominated for best lead actress for her role as a mother in love with her daughter’s boyfriend in the low-budget film “Viva Love.”

She is also on the list for best supporting actress for her role as an ex-convict in the film “Open City.”

She could take home two awards, or nothing at all.

One disappointment of the film awards show is that many of the movies nominated for best film are also nominated in the best director category.

While the movie The Chaser is nominated for best film, its director Na Hong-jin is nominated for best director.

Secret Sunshine is also nominated for best film and its director Lee Chang-dong is up for best director.

Happiness, nominated for best film, has its director Heo Jin-ho on the list for best film.

It is the same for the film “The Happy Life,” and the director Lee Joon-ik as well as “Seven Days” and its director Won Shin-yeon.

Last year a low-budget film, “The Birth of a Family,” won best film.

The Daejong Film Awards are jointly organized by the JoongAng Ilbo, SBS, Korean Film Council and Daesung Group.

The award ceremony starts at 8:40 p.m. and runs for two hours. The show is broadcast live on SBS.

The evaluation is made by 10 movie experts and 50 members of the public.

The evaluation of experts will account for 60 percent of the vote.

There are 19 categories for the awards show, including best acting and best technology.

The main vote will take place between June 16 and 27 at Seoul Cinema in Jongno, downtown Seoul.

HA Jung-woo in Korea-Japan co-production

N2008060318302282701.jpg

[image=gonews]

HA Jung-woo will star together with the Japanese actor Satoshi Tsumabuki in a film tentatively titled House. KIM Young-nam is at the helm of the project and Aya Watanabe writes the scenario.

HA and Tsumabuki will portray smugglers who work together while they are based at each side of the East Sea. Complications arise when they receive the order to kidnap a Korean woman together.

HA commanded attention with his role in YOON Jong-bin’s The Unforgiven (Yongseo Batji Mothan Ja). He extended his name internationally with Gina KIM’s Never Forever (Doobeonjjae Sarang). With his latest film The Chaser (Choogyeokja) he also scored a major box office hit.

KIM directed the film Don’t Look Back (Nae Cheongchunaegae Goham) which was invited by the Locarno International Film Festival for its 2006 international competition section where it received the FIPRESCI and NETPAC awards. His debut film Outcry of Youth was selected for KOFIC’s 2005 Production Support Program for International Co-productions. Outcry of Youth was also a Korea-Japan co-production.

Tsumabuki is known for his role in Josee, the Tiger and the Fish. Watanabe is also responsible for the scenarios of La Maison de Himiko and Josee, the Tiger and the Fish.

Kraze Pictures (Korea) and IMJ Entertainment (Japan) share an equal financial share in the production which is scheduled for a release in 2009.

Yes, this movie is based on actual events!

I already pre-ordered the DVD. Just one month to go! :sweatingbullets: It is also nice that the first disc contains a DTS track. Should be a nice edition with a cool slipcover. Waiting can be killing.

jjowah, please don't post too much without spoilers. There are a lot people here who haven't seen the movie.

And here is the order link for Yesasia:

The DVD is already on the third rank in the top sellers. I think next week it will be the top spot for the next weeks. It will be interesting to see when this DVD is going to be out of print. Well, I'm on a sure side, I already pre-ordered. ;)
