Bond pic dominates weekend

SEOUL -- "Quantum of Solace" dominated the Korean box office over the weekend, beating local hit "My Wife Got Married."

Bond pic opened Wednesday and brought in $3.3 million from 697,000 admissions on 570 screens, including a $2.45 million weekend take.

Opening was the biggest in South Korea for any pic in the James Bond series, beating previous record-holder "Casino Royale," which drew 420,000 admissions in its first weekend.

Besides Bond there was little solace for local exhibs. After winning two consecutive weekends, "My Wife Got Married" slipped to No. 2, adding only $770,000, or 162,400 admissions, although it played on 385 screens. The CJ Entertainment movie has cumed $6.7 million.

Rest of the films on the chart attracted fewer than 100,000 admissions. "Bank Job" took third place, adding $370,000, or 78,300 admissions, on 249 screens, and grossed $1.7 million from 359,000 admissions to date for distributor SidusFNH.

"Eagle Eye" ranked at No. 4 in its fifth weekend, cuming $10.3 million, including a $327,000 weekend take from 68,900 admissions.

Among new films, local pic "Once Upon a Time in Seoul" opened in fifth place with $251,000 from 53,000 admissions for its four-day run on 241 screens. Studio2.0 distributes.

Although officially opening Nov. 13, local pic "Antique" ranked No. 9 thanks to a Saturday and Sunday sneak peek, drawing $123,000 for distributor Showbox from 26,000 admissions on 178 screens.

"Body of Lies" took eighth place in its third weekend and rapidly dropped behind earlier openers such as "Eagle Eye" and "Mamma Mia!," cuming $2.5 million, including a $142,000 weekend take.

'Quantum' rules foreign box office

Bond pic grosses $106.5 million overseas

James Bond blew away foreign box office rivals as "Quantum of Solace" gunned down $106.5 million at 9,870 playdates in 60 territories -- the 11th biggest international weekend ever.

Underlining Bond's global popularity, Sony-MGM's Bond pic averaged a socko $10,790 per location. It's cumed an eye-popping $160.3 million internationally in its first 10 days even though it still hasn't opened in Australia, Japan, Mexico and Spain.

"Solace," which launched last weekend in the U.K., France and Sweden, took in more than triple the combined foreign take for the next four entries -- "High School Musical 3," "Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa," "Body of Lies" and "Saw V."

"Solace" pulled in the second largest international weekend in 2008, trailing only the $146.6 million debut of "Indiana Jones and Kingdom of the Crystal Skull." It topped the bows of "Casino Royale" -- top foreign grosser among Bondpics at $429 million -- in each of its 57 new markets, with the openings in 13 of those markets more than doubling the "Casino" launches.

"Solace" also posted the top openings ever for Switzerland at $3.8 million, Finland at $1.7 million and the United Arab Emirates at $1 million along with Nigeria, Romania and Slovenia. Its beefy $9.1 million Chinese debut represented the second largest ever for a non-Chinese pic, and its $3.7 million Indian launch was the second-best among Hollywood entries.

The success of "Solace" -- with a plot that picks up where "Casino Royale" left off -- underscores the strong appetite among international moviegoers for franchises and actioners. Mark Zucker, who heads Sony's international distribution, said the pic has far outperformed internal forecasts and has shown unexpectedly strong traction among teens.

Brit biz generated the top "Solace" number, declining 40% from its record-setting debut to $15.1 million for a 10-day cume of $50.3 million. Germany's $15 million led the launches, followed by Russia and China with $9.1 million each, South Korea with $4.5 million, Italy with $4.3, Switzerland with $3.8 million, India with $3.5 million, Denmark with $2.9 million, Norway with $2.3, Holland with $2.2 million and Austria with $2.1 million.

The second French frame showed solid traction, declining 46% to $5.7 million for a 10-day cume of $20.5 million, while Sweden slid 42% to $1.4 million.

"Solace," which opens next weekend in Mexico, should dominate the foreign box office for several more frames with the "Madagascar" sequel, "Bolt" and "Twilight" all seeing gradual release patterns. Fox's "The Day the Earth Stood Still" will go day and date in most foreign markets during the second weekend of December.

Disney's "High School Musical 3" led the rest of the pack during the frame with $13.6 million at 4,748 in 32 markets to boost its foreign cume to $109.4 million -- the fifth Mouse House pic to top the $100 million mark overseas in 2008 after "Wall-E" at $262 million, "The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian," "National Treasure 2" and "Enchanted."

Par's "Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa" continued to shine, with $9.2 million at 770 in only four markets to push its foreign cume to $40.2 million -- $35.8 million of that from two weeks in Russia. Its $656,000 Hungarian launch notched the second-highest opening for a toon in that market.

In the few markets without "Quantum of Solace," pics posted moderate results. Spain saw the best numbers with a $2.1 million launch of Warner's "Body of Lies," pushing the pic's foreign cume to $16.4 million from 13 international territories while still early in its foreign run.

The soph sesh of "High School Musical 3" led in Mexico with $1 million. Fox's Japanese launch of "X-Files: I Want to Believe" topped that chart, also with $1 million. And in Australia, the debut of Warner's "Nights in Rodanthe" finished first with $960,000, beating the fourth frame of "Burn After Reading."

S. Korea's box office tilts to U.S. films

SEOUL – Local movies accounted for 44% of the Korean theatrical box office in October, according to data from the country's largest exhibition chain, CJ-CGV.

That was 21 percentage points lower than the 65% figure in the equivalent month last year and 10 points down on September.

Top performers at the box office were U.S. titles "Eagle Eye" and "Mamma Mia!" while local pics "GoGo 70s," "Modern Boy" and "Crush and Blush," disappointed.

Terroir to follow Tazza

Terroir is a drama I’ve been hearing about for months, but which has finally been given an airdate — it follows Tazza on SBS and will premiere in early December.

The drama stars Han Hye-jin (Jumong) and Kim Joo-hyuk (My Wife Got Married), and is based in the world of wine; the word terroir is a winemaking term:

Terroir: “French for ’soil’ and used in the phrase gout de terroir (’taste of the soil’) to refer to the earthy flavor of some wines. When French wine producers use the term terroir, it not only includes reference to the type of soil, but also to other geographic factors that might influence the quality of the finished wine like altitude, position relative to the sun, angle of incline, and water drainage.” –Epicurious

Terroir, like Gourmet and I Love You (both also SBS dramas), is a drama that has been produced in advance. It has been in the works for the last two years, and recently finished its location shoot in Bordeaux, France, in October.

Han Hye-jin recently wrote in an online post, “The filming atmosphere was fantastic. The drama is cheery and bright, and the story will have you laughing.”

Terroir bumps out the previously scheduled drama Lord of Study to follow Tazza on Mondays and Tuesdays after that drama was delayed with contract and filming difficulties. Episode 1 airs December 1.

hey valleygirl, the budget for the movie wasnt released so without the number, we cant say if the movie reached its break even, but, since MWGM is a movie that doesnt really require huge huge budget, lets say just around 5 billion won, its easy to say that the investors are quite happy with the results, and i guess to reach 1 million ticket sales (for a rated 18 and a romantic comedy) is a success already since the korean film industry is in a slump lately.

I read from other papers that actor Jung Jae-Young's The Divine Weapon cost around 10 billion Won. So Ji-Sub & Kang Ji-Hwan's movie Rough Cut was a relatively low budget movie (production cost of 1.5 billion Won).
