SBS Confirms June 2015 Premiere for New Kim Eun Sook Overseas Pre-produced Drama Descendants of the Sun

Only with its most high profile cash cow screenwriter will SBS make an official big announcement as to the confirmation of a time slot for her next drama. Kim Eun Sookis still riding high off the success of Heirs, less as a quality piece and more of a “raking in the dough” project. If it was her only success then she might not deliver again but Heirs was merely the latest in a looooooong line of Kim Eun Sook dramas that got the ratings and the profit for the network. SBS has announced that Kim Eun Sook’s next drama is scheduled to air next June in 2015 and will be almost completely pre-filmed. The drama is tentatively called Descendants of the Sun and was supposed to air in early 2015 when the news first came out earlier this year. But due to its pre-filmed nature, and the fact that casting hasn’t even started, it’s not surprising that the premiere date is being pushed back to the middle of 2015.

This drama will be a HUGE production, make no bones about it, with reportedly over 80% of the drama being overseas shoots. Considering how I laugh at all the overseas portion of Kim Eun Sook dramas including the ridiculousness of Heirs in Los Angeles, this does not bode well for me. Co-producing this sucker will be movie houseBarunson which has the acclaimed movies Mother and The Good, The Bad, The Weird under its belt along with drama production Hwa & Dam Pictures that has worked with Kim Eun Sook before in producing Heirs, A Gentleman’s Dignity, andSecret Garden. The drama is described as an uplifting humanist story about people who work in dangerous disaster zones and love blossoms for the two leads through helping those in need and looking after each other. Sounds…..different, I guess?

There are some big names (obviously) bandied about for the leads including a feeler sent out to Kim Soo Hyun as well as long percolating rumors that Kim Eun Sook wantsHyun Bin for the drama. Neither name surprises me and honestly with her clout it’s going to be an A-lister at this point. I won’t be surprised if she manages to land movie stars who don’t do dramas like Kang Dong Won or even Won Bin.

The budget for this drama is purportedly one of the biggest ever for any K-drama due to the extensive overseas shoot and the disaster zone setting. The drama getting pushed back is not due to Kim Eun Sook’s script not being done but purely on the financial planning aspects as the PPL is going to be insane in order to fund this drama’s huge advanced overhead costs. Unlike Heirs and the random high school setting, Descendants of the Sun will go back to the more mature age bracket of Kim Eun Sook’s drama leads. I’m just begging for another City Hall but feel like that’s such a pipe dream. Sigh.

It's a Song-Song couple for sure in the upcoming series Descendants of the Sun! Both Song Joong Kiand Song Hye Gyo have officially confirmed their participation in the new series from the writer of Secret Garden and Heirs.

 

In the series, written by famed scriptwriter Kim Eun Sook, Song Jong Ki will play a member of the UN peacekeeping troops working abroad. He meets a doctor from Doctors without Borders (Song Hye Gyo), and they fall in love as they work together in conflict zones. 

Also joining the cast are Kim Ji Won, who played mean girl Rachel in Kim Eun Sook's last drama, Heirs. She will play an army surgeon. Jin Goo has also confirmed his role as another member of the peacekeeping troops. They will also have a romantic storyline throughout the series.

This drama is aiming for epic scale, as much of the series will be shot overseas. There are also reports that this drama will be 100% pre-produced before airing, which means that they will film everything before airing the first episode. This approach is highly unusual in the Korean live-shoot system, where most dramas only have a handful of episodes complete before the series starts and continue filming as it airs.Descendants of the Sun is set to air in the fall on KBS

Director John Woo complimented actress Song Hye Kyo.

The main actors of the movie “The Crossing,” including Song Hye Kyo andTong Da Wei, as well as director John Woo, showed up at the opening preview of the movie for promotion.

When asked about what is was like to work with Song Hye Kyo at a local press conference, director John Woo said, “There were actors with different nationalities, but there were no problems in communication.”

Later on, he judged the actress as a whopping 85 out of 100, saying that the additional 15 points would be up to the audiences’ reactions.

“Song Hye Kyo is always prepared to act, so she only makes few mistakes. When she gets mixed up with lines, she tries to make the best out of it rather than slyly attempt to get away with it,” praised director John Woo.

The director also mentioned how she played all the piano scenes herself instead of using a double.

Meanwhile, Song Hye Kyo described her experience with director John Woo as, “a once in a life time opportunity in which I learned a lot.”

“I am grateful for all the other actors who helped me throughout the filming,” she said. “Speaking in Chinese was especially hard for me.”

Based on the sinking of the ship Taiping, an actual event that happened in 1949 that caused the death of a thousand passengers, “The Crossing” depicts the story of three couples’ search for happiness during times of war and disaster. Song Hye Kyo, Zhang Ziyi, Wu Jincheng, Huang Xiao Ming, Tong Da Wei, and Nagasawa Masami star as the main characters.

Song Hye Gyo Spotted Wearing Casual Clothes in Taiwan

Actress Song Hye Gyo has been spotted in Taiwan in plain clothes with no makeup on.

Taiwan newspaper Liberty Times released a picture of Song Hye Gyo going around Taipei after finishing filming in December. According to the report, Song Hye Gyo wrapped up filming at Yangmingshan National Park near Taipei, and headed into town with staff members for dinner.

Song Hye Gyo looked comfortably dressed, wearing skinny jeans and a khaki-colored coat, with a grey cap and black scarf to hide her face. Despite appearing without makeup and in plain clothes, she was unable to hide her style and beauty.

She was noticeably absent from the SBS Drama Awards, where she was given a High Excellence Award for her role in “That Winter, The Wind Blows.”

The actress was in Taiwan filming a movie by Hong Kong director John Woo, “The Crossing,” dubbed the “Chinese Titanic.” The movie is set during the Chinese Civil War in 1949, and tells the story of three refugee couples who embark on a fateful ship voyage fleeing from China to Taiwan.  Filming will take place in China and Taiwan.  The all-star cast includes Tong Dawei, Zhang Ziyi, Huang Xiaoming, Takeshi Kaneshiro and Masami Nagasawa. “The Crossing” is slated for release in November 2014.

Her styling is also attention grabbing. She wears a variety of outfits to match the jewelry. A tube top with a jacket, a dress, and a blouse are among the clothes she wears. Song Hye Gyo’s semi-smoky eye makeup as well as her hair also suited her extremely well.

Song Hye Gyo’s latest Chinese film “The Crossing” topped the box office in China last December. In Korea, part one of her film will be released March 1 while part two will be released in June.
