I agree that each person is unique and each of us have our own taste. It doesn't mean if there's sth we like but rating is low, it must be underrated. Rather i think a drama is considered as underrated when even few people have watched it, almost all who watched it like it. However it may not be a rave or being mentioned much in forums or rankings. And they maybe not be available in some places/countries. So some people may not even know about existence of such 'gem'.

Take for example, I'm really happy that I've seen Bad Family and Resurrection. I almost forced "Bad Family" into my friend's hands who usually watched Japanese drama. I urged her a few times until finally, her family watched it and all of them love it. Especially her sister who repeated watching some episodes and felt that after BF so far no other drama can par with it. Well it may be because of its special genre as nowadays there are not many non-romance-centric, heart-warming comedy known. I have not watched 'Be strong Kim Soon' not sure is it of similar mixture?

Now I'm waiting for my friend to have time for Resurrection, and next maybe Super Rookie :)

On the other hand some drama can be overrated maybe due to promotion, star actors/actresses with loads of fans, grand settings etc. Maybe just hype and rave.

i agree with most of you, Full House and Goong are way overrated.

And I dont see why people like Autumn's Tale, Which Star are you from (even I like Kim RW). Well but these I wouldnt say they're overrated, maybe they're just not to my taste?

Besides Bad Family and Resurrection, I also very much like Alone in Love, Sang Do (historic drama), Damo which seldom appear in any ranking/recommendation list. I'm not sure if these are "underrated" as I don't know many people who've watched them. I've just started Soulmate and liking it so far.

Soulmate

Talk about being under appreciated! The drama builds itself up fantastically and it does the whole idea of a "soulmate" without turning it into an overly sentimental and cliche drama. There's so hilarious humour in this and you'll find yourself questioning whether soulmates truly exist at the end.

Agree =D good drama very very underrated =( i love the whole concept of the drama...can't wait for 2nd season hopefully it'll come out this year...patiently waiting =D

ok, so i am not very knowledgeable about ratings  but i have formed opinions on certain dramas that i felt were overrated and under-rated, by watching them and reading the very opinions of others and a long with a few reviews.

first over-rated! my first choice is goong, while it had its moments throughtout 24 episodes, it dragged on too much, i do not know how a lot of people sat thru it, but i constantly fast forward through it. yes, the kiss in episode 23!<was great> but wow, how many times did it just go round and round, nothing original, except a few fresh faces. over all it just to me, is not all it was hyped to be. :fury:

my girl, do not get me wrong, cute drama, lee junki, lee dae hee, and the main guy = a great looking cast but where was the chemistry between lee dae hee and ole boy? it was not as bad as full house, but again it is not a drama i find myself wanting to watch over and over.

full house, aside from rain, why else did we watch it, how did this become a top favorite for anyone? the only thing that carried this drama to the end was comic relief and the fans of rain and woodpecker, again they are both exceptionally cute but they had awful chem. it was like sitting siblings next to each other and forcing them to kiss, it just comes out stale. :vicx:

i have many more (ex.) hello miss, witch yoo hee... but that is all for now.

now on to shows that were under-rated

SOULMATE, the first k-drama, series(whatever) that i was able to watch every episode without fast forwarding throught slow moving parts. the drama showed an accurate display of attraction, dating the ins and out of settling and going for what feels right and not what IS right. the cast did a great job. it had everything from "what women want" to "he is just not that into you" to how to lose a guy in ten days" a spectacular script/story line. i dare everyone to watch, its excellent.

  • crazy for you, usually i'm not big on the older woman, younger man type. but the emotions and story line was made believeable from the beginning. you have the b/f who wants to be more than a friend. the naturally good guy who has bad luck and a girl who takes his kindness for weakness. you have not the typical 30 something ole biddy who is a virgin, but a widow, who is in high demand, i mean the woman freakens manages her job. shows the struggle like in HYD of fighting for love. NOBODY OF IMPORTANCE DIES...but warning as great as i may think this drama is, i was dissatisfied with the ending, because if you are like more, you just want a bit more than what they gave. :excl:

  1. que sera sera! it was more realistic than the normal caught between two guy kind of triangle. the dynamics in the plot were rich, from the moments of terror from an overdrive in emotion to the tender kisses of falsified hope. everything from eric being an escort to ole girl sleeping with both guys, lets not pretend it doesn't happen in life, because more than likely if it was us, honestly we would of slept with both of them too. "whose the baby daddy" that is some maury (s*&t) excuse my language but that is what made the drama so enticing, because it not only stepped outside the box but it crossed boundaries, borderline scandelous. :D

others that i find under rated are snow queen, my man's woman, thank you! (which by the way is an excellent drama)

continue to be a blessing everyone!

in my opinion, these dramas were not given the attention they deserved by filipino viewers. why that happened? i can only speculate.

overrated:

goong - maybe if i were a bit younger, like 5-7 years younger, i would have enjoyed it. after the 16th episode, it just dragged on. this probably became popular because it's light and funny, a perfect breather from the melodramatic local series that air before it.

stairway to heaven - it was too draggy and predictable. it didnt offer anything new. and choi ji woo's charatcer was annoyingly meek. i have no idea why it was that huge aside from the fact that kwon sang woo's really cute. not really a good reason to stick around but there you go.

endless love series (autumn in my heart, winter sonata, summer scent) - OH MY GOSH. TERRIBLY BORING.

underrated:

super rookie - not really THAT good as there are parts where everything's just all over the place but i think many filipino fans would be able to relate. for example, it's not unknown that in many filipino companies there's an unspoken rule that they will take in new employees from only 3 or 4 "top" universities, whose admission processes tend to be competitive and tuition fees prohibitive to many filipinos. the rest of the resumes literally go through the shredders. this issue of selectivity and discrimination was raised and somewhat developed in super rookie. and there's the "usual" rat race which is kinda exciting since not many filipino dramas feature it as a plot element. and i have to admit that it's funny, at least in some parts. it didn't really take off probably because it's a daytime series. and during the daytime, office workers, the ones who are most able to relate to the drama, are at work. and they put it on qtv11, a relatively small channel. many filipinos have yet to realize that there are good shows on other local channels too, not just abscbn and gma. sigh.

all in - it was a good drama. its a shame that not many people tuned in. well, i cant really blame people for not watching this, even if it were very popular in korea. qtv11 aired it around november 2005, when the channel had just been put up by giant network gma, the reception wasnt that clear. therefore it didnt have as many viewers as it has now. add to that the terrible dubbing and translations that strayed too much from the original. im not surprised why many filipino viewers didnt watch it or even know about it.

sangdo (merchant of joseon) - i know only one person who watches this, and that person is me. that's probably because no local station in the philippines airs or have aired it. it airs only on arirang, which is a cable channel. even those who have cable tv are unable to watch it. skycable, which is easily the biggest cable tv company in the country, took arirang out of its channel lineup and replaced it with kbs world. and even if they didnt, arirang was never a popular channel to begin with. so now, there are probably very very few people in the philippines who watch this show regularly. probably not even a hundred. and thats a shame because its an excellent drama series. if you like dae jang geum (and who doesnt?), you will find this drama good. it has the same themes as the monster hit drama and it's also as engaging, unpredictable and well-written. now if only a local network would invest in this drama series, have it dubbed in tagalog for mass consumption, market it to the right audience, and give it a good time slot (maybe even primetime, right after the local drama shows, which is when they usually air korean dramas), i think it will take off, given that people here totally loved dae jang geum. if they can air dae jang geum twice, then maybe they can give this a shot. but as of now, it's severely underrated and underwatched, hehe.

was this series popular? i cant seem to find any info about it.

i totally agree to what you've said most especially to the drama Super Rookie. that drama is one of my favorite kdramas because i really like the plot and i think there's no boring parts in it. what i like in super rookie is how it depicts what is really happening to some of the college grads who are having a hard time finding a good job. i could really relate to the story of this drama because i'm one of the college grads who had a hard time looking for a job. the drama centers on the life of a low level college grad who took several years before he landed a job in a prestige company. the story never ends there because when he found a job in LK corporation, his struggles for keeping his job started. i think even in Korea, this drama didn't got a high rating when it was shown there.

OVERRATED:

Definitely Full House. As soon as I watched it, I immediately thought it was given too much credit.

I had a different opinion on Goong, though. I liked it so much when I was watching it (then it was not yet popular in my country), but I admit that it was quite draggy during the last few episodes. However, as soon as its popularity struck, I thought it was really overrated.

UNDERRATED:

1. Soulmate - I am glad to see others here who agree. It was too good, yet it was unknown. I love Shin Dong Wook! Still hoping for the second season!

2. My Sister-in-Law is 19 - This had a great story, a quite unpredictable turn of events, and a good line-up of actors.

3. Hello, God - When I saw this, I wondered why I hadn't heard so much about it because it really had a unique story. After I watched it, the only adjective I thought of was "beautiful."

4. Taste Sweet Love / Snow White - It's story and comedy is by no means inferior to Full House.

5. What's Up, Fox? - This was just sweet, hilarious and dealt with mature topics. I wonder why it wasn't given much attention.

6. Sang-doo, Let's Go to School - Rain's acting and role is so much better here. The series was just good, but I gotta admit I hate the vague ending.

7. Sweet 18 - The tandem was just so cute, and they fit perfectly in the sweet story. BTW, are Lee Dong Gun and Han Ji Hye still together?

I didn't know Delightful Girl Choon-hyang was underrated...but I enjoyed the series =D

I always find Damo in some best series lists whenever I surf. I just think it's the whole serious theme that stops me from watching it. Soulmate, on the other hand, is really underrated. It's really a pity because it's so good.

i have to add Someday in underrated dramas. i don't know why this drama wasn't that popular nor even got a high viewer share when it was aired. the plot was good & the actors are all good but perhaps the advertising for this drama of OCN & Yellow Pictures didn't turn out well.

bad family (downloaded it all and realize that it's not worth watching)

love story in harvard (first 4 episodes were good and that was it)

Guardian angel (this was old, but i actually spent money and bought it because of song hye gyo, and what i got was my mom telling me to turn it off because it was boring and glooomy.)

Dae Jang geum (i guess it's just not my taste :sweatingbullets:

A love to kill (didn't finish it but i heard the ending and i thought it was funny)

Overrated dramas currently none not yet. Underrated - Lovers in Paris. I really liked that drama, it was the drama that got me into watching korean dramas. I read on wikipedia that it was SBS's most successful show ever, they got a 51.8% ratings. I thought the main leads would have gotten way popular because of it and I don't see many people praising it like Goong or Full House.

that is wat i though too at 1st.. i thought they wud be popular, but it is just d opposite way i expected. Goong and Full House have gone so big and PSY's dramas are not that many, including his thread in soompi.

Underrated: SOULMATE. It's sad that the thread here is only 18 pages long. This is such a funny and enjoyable drama with top-notch writing. The OST is out of this world too.

The Lover's in Paris thread was extremely popular with hundreds of pages. However, that was before the crash; consequently the thread was lost.... so just to let you know it was indeed just as popular on soompi as it was in the general Korean population :D

The new thread however is not prolific as the original and if you ask me I think it is because the drama did not have a good ending. And truth be told... how a stories end does have a significant impacts post production response, sales, and repeatability.

I personally love the series and even brought the dvd but the subtitles are not as good as the fan subs. ;)

Overrated - FullHouse ( people have different taste but definitely this one didn't linger in my mind after watching it)

Goong S (although I really loved Seven here...i don't like the female lead .... I dragged myself to watch it till the last episode tsk tsk)

Underrated - Lovers (definitely must - watch for a hopeless romantic... I also like the chemistry of the main characters...they ended up dating in real life)

Overrated

Stairway to Heaven (I recently watched it to see what the hype was all about. Major mistake. Hands down the most exasperating drama I've ever watched. The plot is so ridiculous and convoluted.:wacko: )
