Maybe CSA was adopted and met his mother through the orphanage, when she looked for her own lost child. Moreover, she might have painted there too. What the gallery did at the orphanage during this week, could have happened in the past with CSA. The thing is that LS seems to be a single mother. CSA has never mentioned his father either. Furthermore, he was happy to give toys to the orphanage. So CSA could be an adopted son... as if LS was trying to redeem herself for losing her son RG.

I like the point you've made about CSA being adopted.  As always your analysis is well thought out and insightful.

Correct me if I am wrong.  You think that LS mother, because he lost her son, adopted CSA and gave him her son's name?

One point; I do not know about DM's mother leaving RG at the orphanage, she appears to be a person who would have taken him in, at least for the night.  I understand that the woman who left him at the orphanage said that she was not his mother and she had a pony tail that looks very much like DM's mother; however, I cannot see her just leaving him at night at the door of the orphanage.

@bebebisous33I have not had the time to read this entire thread because it is moving very quickly.  Did you give an

    analysis of LS's paintings?

I have the impression that Heo Yoon Tae might not be his real name. Notice that DM looked for HYT's name in the missing children list and nothing happened. What if Heo yoon Tae is the real name of his brother, CSA? Many think that CSA is RG's half-brother but what if he is his real brother? My theory is that CSA was one of the children from SDM's memories. In my opinion, SDM could have been hurt in an accident, just like CSA... therefore DM's mother pushed RG away.

Furthermore RG doesn't really remember his past, he has even forgotten his mother's face. So he definitely had a trauma. Maybe he witnessed the car accident and felt guilty.

@bebebisous33   &  @Lalalaby Good theory.  However, I am confused when you say, "real brother" as opposed to half brother?  My grandmother had two sets of children, she was married twice, none of them act or feel as if they are not "real siblings"  Do you mean you think they have the same mother and father?  If so, I understand.

Is it your theory that it was DM's mother who pushed RG away?

Who left him at the orphanage?  According to DM's memory she was playing with someone at the orphanage.

Were they both,  RG and SA, at the orphanage?    Do you think that RG and SA are that close in age?   SA knows his mother, remember she came to visit him  at his apartment.  RG's think his mother left him at the orphanage and she forcefully removed his hand from hers; therefore, RG does not like letting go of anyone's hand because when he does, he feels abandoned.  It is my impression that SA and RG do not know that they are brothers.  RG was adopted by a couple in the United States, I do not think his mother knows what happened to him and that is why she was in the chapel, perhaps she continuously pray for his safety and happiness.

I think that much of RG's trauma comes from being separated from his mother which is why when he saw her paintings, he was traumatized he could not paint any longer.

However, I do not discount your theory; because we never know where the story will lead us.  Who knows, your theory might be right on all points.

The last kiss in this cooking scene i found it a bit too short and rush for the editor to cut this scene short..why so fast???? I wonder what's happening?:phew: are their adlib is too much and the director had to cut it out :w00t:

Remember they held dinner (decided not to eat yet); therefore, it was implied that something else happened between the short kiss and the next scene with  them sitting at the table eating.  I get the implication; however, I wished that the transition was a littler smoother.  Maybe one of them should have taken the other's hand or moved slightly, after the kiss, as if leaving the kitchen area, the next scene would have flowed better.  I got all of the implied stuff and was happy. I love the fact that this is an adult romance and they act as couples over 30 would act.

    New thought

I do not know who to attribute the insight to; however, whoever it was was spot on.  Earlier on I read someone's post in which they stated that they thought that CSA and RG were brothers.  Great insight.

I think for further it should be DM's turn now to understand more about RG because I see that RG is very much vulnerable just like in today's ep when he saw EG went to DM's house, then he made a call but DM turned off her phone, and lastly made sure to go to DM's house at a proper time: 7 o'clock, he just shown us that he doesn't want to be ended up alone and he knows how terrible it is for being left alone.

Episode 10 was really sweet.  It portrayed new love, and how giddy one can be when one first fall in love...so cute.   I agree with must of your insight; however, I just want to make one correction.  DM did not turn off her cell phone, EG did.

    New thought

I am an American and I do not fully understand how Korean's think, just as they do not fully understand how we think.  I say this to say that there are always those who feel sorry for the second lead and I don't quite get it.  I have pulled for the second lead in times where the first lead was being a Richard Simmons; however, in this case, the first lead has it all; talent, money, maturity, consideration for others, charisma, and is a sexy hunk of a man.

Should DM fall for EG just because they grew up together?  Should RG fall for DI just because he has known her for 10 years?  Someone explain this second lead, (no matter how immature, conniving, and petty they are), to me.  Yes, I do feel bad for EG, because he waited too late to confess.  However, I do not feel sorry for him because, he waited to late to confess.  If he really cared for DM as he says he does, he would want to see her happy.  DM would not be happy with EG, he is like a brother to her.  I do not feel sorry for DI at all.  She comes to Korea, thinking that because she came, and has known him previously that RG is supposed to fall for her.  I was hoping that the writer would make DI more mature, since all of these characters are in their thirties.  DI knew when she told DM that RG wanted to end the fake relationship it was because he wanted a real one with DM.  Therefore, why should I feel sorry for her.  As I stated earlier, it must be a cultural difference that has some rooting for the second leads even when they are without merit.

I cannot wait for episode 11.  I am already feeling sad seeing RG crying.  I hope whatever it is DM can help him and soothe his fears/worries.

  5. I am glad I watched last night's episode (#9).  All the actors did a great job.  You could feel the tension at the gallery because of RG and DM.  I loved the lunch scene in the restaurant.  It was hilarious, yet heart-wrenching to watch because everyone knew the two of them were hurting, but were at a lost as to what to do about it.  Cindy was cute; when RG asked her why she did not let everyone know he was not cheating on DM.  She said why should she he threaten to sue her.:)

For the first time, I really felt bad for EG.  He really loves her, but she sees him as the brother she never had.  EG hurts when DM hurts, but this time she did not share with him as apparently she did in the past.  This made him realize, DM really cares for RG.  I hope the writer let's the character of EG come to accept his loss and wish DM well and let her know he is there for her always.

The confession scene was perfect.  Both of them nailed their parts. I cried when she cried, I sighed when they kissed.  I loved it.

Episode nine was well written and directed.  I chuckled, laughed, was sad, cried, and sighed.  I hope tonight's episode is just as good.

I think,  before the workshop, DI knows DM likes RG, but was not bothered because, at that time, DI didn't know RG likes DM.  Once DI realise RG's feelings, she acted fast. DI striking a conversation with EG outside the restaurant was already the start of her dirty scheme. (So sorry, I have to say the actress is so bad, I can't read much of her wooden expressions. Her acting is so bad that I am not convinced she likes RG).

EG, however, is a clueless simpleton.  No way he knows about DI liking RG.  Even if he did know, no way he'll scheme to use DI to sabotage the relationship.  All he did was marking territory, like a puppy urinating all over the garden.   Annoying? Yes.  Dirty? No.

Yes, very interesting to see opposing interpretation and reactions.  I was taken aback to read so many dislikes/hatred on what EG did.

I love this post because my interpretation is different from yours.

DI knew RG did not like her when she, paraphrasing, said she needed him to be more than a mentor and critique her work and RG told her he could help her with he work, but could not offer her anything more.  To me it was clear, I will help you as a friend, but that is all.  It was not hard to interpret.; "I am not into you, in that way."  The chemistry between DM and RG was so strong that the furniture maker thought that they were a couple.   Sometimes, others can see the attraction before the two individuals involved.  If he could see it, everyone else could see it also, including EG.

EG, might have blurted out "innocently" (which I doubt, noting his behavior) that it was fake relationship; however, if he did not think that the two were attracted to each other, it would have been no need for him to embarrass himself as well as DM.  I give you that EG might not have known that DI liked RG; however, EG does not know DI well enough to "innocently" blurt out DM's business to her.  I do not think he is a simpleton, or as clueless as we think, there is a method to his madness.  I also think he had a inking that DI liked RG.  If he did not feel things were heating up with DM and RG, he would never ran to the furniture factory the way he did.  When EG told DI about the fake relationship, he was also giving her the signal that RG was free, in the hope that somehow, RG would stop liking DM and turn his attention to DI and DM , heartbroken would come to him.    If EG do not get his act together, he will also lose DM as a friend.

I think DM most effected when she heard that CDI knows that they are fake dating. She seems suprised and in her mind, the only one who could told CDI is Ryan. She didnt imagine that CDI heard it from EG. So she got upset because she thinks that Ryan told CDI that they are fake dating and wants to end the fake relationship because Ryan likes CDI and dont want CDI to misunderstand, or else Ryan wouldnt told CDI that. So she thinks that Ryan did not have the same feeling as her. Thats why she wants to end it. Not because CDI likes RG. She only thinks about RG's feeling and if he didnt like her, whats the point of continuing fake dating anyway.

But i agree with u, she should have listen what Ryan has to say first. I mean, even if its true that Ryan want to end the fake relationship, lets hear it from Ryan's mouth, right?

You are correct in your assessment, DM would never imagine that it was  EG would who told DI about the fake dating; however, RG is the one who told DI that he wanted to end the fake dating and why.  Therefore, she knew he wanted to date DM for real when she made it appear to DM that RG wanted to end the fake relationship and inferred it was because he liked her, (DI). It was underhanded, lowdown, and sneaky; especially when DM just helped her put her house together...just plain rotten behavior.

You are also correct that DM was feeling insecure about RG's feelings for her.  I get that, I really do; however, DM and RG are great at communicating  with each other. DM should have asked him, casually, about DI and their friendship.  RG is a straight shooter, he would have either told DM the truth or that it was none of her business. I think, had she asked, because DI is also an artist, she would have gotten an honest answer.

    Great post.

  8. I have not had time to read the responses to the last two episodes; therefore, I hope that I am not expressing an opinion that has already been expressed.

I was so disappointed at the end of episode # 8.  I was hoping against hope that Da In would be as mature as character Jo Hye In was in Encounter or character Song Hae Rin in Romance, is a Bonus book.  But I was wrong and now there will be wasted, as far as I am concerned, episode(s) of misunderstanding between RG and DM.  These characters are supposed to be mature, (in their 30's.)  I know, I know, fangirling is not mature.  These characters have completed college, own their own business, or have successful careers, and still artist DI In has to stoop to this level, oh come on.  As adults EG and DI should know by now, just because you come between two people does not guarantee that the person you like will suddenly fall for you.  I am also sick of the "oh I am so humble" attitude.  Just because some girl says, I like him, you are going to move aside and put away your feelings.  My response, as DM, would have been to say sweetly, "well I like him too."  Why should DM move aside because DI likes RG?  Really?  In the real world, DM would have waited until he told her he wanted to end the fake relationship. RG had already told her not until Cindy left the gallery; therefore, why take to heart the word of someone who has told you she likes him.  Where are these women brain cells when I comes to men?  Did their brain cells take a leave of absence?

There are other plot lines this writer could have explored that would have interested me.  For instance, why can't RG paint any longer.  Why was he abandoned.   What about a story line where DM helps RG through his trauma and they both start painting again and perhaps showcasing their art in a major gallery.   The show could have also taken the opportunity to introduce us to a few major Asian, as well as new international artists.

As I stated at the beginning of my post, I am disappointed.  I am disappointed that the writer felt he/she had to write the artist DI character, in such a pathetic way, especially when she already knows that RG is not romantically interested in her, in order to move the story forward.

I am thinking about skipping the next few episodes.  :heartbreak:

OOooo... jumping into the 'thumb kiss' debate, I don't think he kissed his thumb... but because of the speed of the kiss his hand just happens to be super close to her mouth... specifically his mound of venus (hehehe) the fleshy part of your thumb is what we can see.

I am with you.  I think his thumb was positioned over a small portion of her lips; however, if you look closely, his lip is touching her lip.  If his lips are touching her entire lips, I do not know, but from my viewpoint, it is a kiss.

    Yes I too am worried

I am not sure what conflicts they can bring, but here are a few ideas.

If Cindy exposes them to be a fake couple it might not be bad, but DM reputation might take a hit if it's known she is RTM.

Or they might bring a scandal against Si An and show DM and Ryan solving it together or the whole family things with the painting and their mother.

Frankly, I am at a loss too but I sincerely hope the drama tackles whatever conflict that comes properly with understanding.

If they bring amnesia or noble idocity breakup and such nonsense then I will be truly unhappy. You do not want a Angry fanfirl ( my emotions are on a high today ; LOL :joy:

If they take time to actually explore DM true feelings for Ryan slowly as she is first and foremost a fangirl and might herself feel like she is betraying Si An; then I am okay with that storyline.

Dear drama gods please help us all!

    :innocent:

PS forgot about the new girl (possible ex girlfriend)

Hope she is not a MAJOR conflict and is dealt with properly

I am enjoying this drama to much to worry about the next ten episodes, they will be great.

Since I watched "Romance is a Bonus Book", which did not have any, love triangles, major misunderstandings, the crazy mother or mother-in-law, or sandals, but was an excellent drama, I know this dramas does not need any major events to make it good.  If this drama educates or reminds the public of the beauty in art and the deep emotions that are often revealed by the artist, then I am satisfied, especially since we already have the amazing chemistry between the leads.

I do not think that RG is interested in the woman that was introduced in episode five, because I think he already know where his heart is leading him.  From the scene I watched between the two, she seemed mature enough not to act childish...but who knows.

I love the fan girl angle, it is hilarious.  We have avid fans here in the states; however, almost none of them rise to the level of fangirling in Asia.  Wow!  I am so amazed at the level that fans will go. It is to the extend that "idols" must date in secret or they will seriously upset their fans.

So far, I am enjoying the script, the clothes DM and RG wears, and of course the off-the-charts chemistry between the two.

My point is, the drama can show, everyday life without the disruptive love triangle, angry mother, or the couple having a major misunderstanding that separates them for several episodes, and still be great.  Everyday can be refreshing.    If this drama highlights the importance that art plays in our lives, DM finding love in the real world, and RD working through his issues and becoming a great artist again, I will call this drama a success.

@bebebisous33 I recommend this drama, if you are not watching it already.  I know you excellent at interpreting art.  I am sure your insight would be welcomed here and raise the conversation to the next level.

Well this guy is good looking too but I saw him as a priest in The guest. I cannot get that picture out of my mind. This actress is so lucky, she was in secretary Kim with a great looking guy too.

I was thinking the same thing as I was watching this drama. She was fortunate to work with Lee Min Ho, Park So Joon and now Kim Jae-Wook.  Park Min Young is a good actress and she is able to bring her A game regardless of the drama or lead actor.

I also miss Encounter, I would suggest, if you have not already watched it, to try Romance is a Bonus Book.  I think you will like the story.  It is about everyday people; however, there is no over the top plots, no evil mother or mother-in-law, trying to break-up the couple.   Romance is a Bonus Book  is not as engaging as Encounter; however, I enjoyed the drama, the main actors and the supporting actors.  It left me with a warm fuzzy feeling.

This drama has been simple and heart warming, I wish there were more dramas like this. No over the top conflicts, no villian, just the life of ordinary people with difficulties and happiness. The only thing I am still disappointed about is the fact that they only "came out" at the very end. It started being weird when they were going to fire the female lead, if they were all such good friends, why have such unnecessary secrets? It's not like they were in a relationship where they didn't want their colleagues to know anything about them. Anyway, it was a good drama.

I wholeheartedly agree.  As you stated no over the top conflicts, no villains, just the lives of ordinary people...well stated.

I understand why Eun-Ho and Dani-I wanted to keep their relationship secret.

Eun-Ho was fair across the board and he could not let it appear that he was favoring Dan-I because they were in a relationship.  Coming out at the end was great because Dan-I had proven herself, and succeeded on her own merit.  Therefore, coming out at the end was the right choice and the secrecy added spice to the relationship ( I loved all of the stolen kisses and hugs) :D

  14. I am sad to see this drama come to an end; however, the ending was very nice and left me feeling good.  Unlike many other dramas, the ending did not feel rushed, but well thought out.  The writing for the entire drama was exceptional.  This drama touched many themes and presented them all tastefully.  As someone stated in an earlier post, it was nice to see an adult relationship and I will go a step further, an grow -up (adult) drama.  None of the situations were, in your face, but presented as everyday life.  This drama touched on divorce, inequality in the work place, the difficulties facing the publishing business with the advent of digital books and the internet, a mother's view concerning marriage and career as opposed to her daughter's, lesbianism, and Alzheimer.  These themes were interwoven into the story just as they are interwoven in real life.

What stood out for me was the passion everyone had for books.  That struck a cord with me because I love to read. I used to spend part of my lunch hour browsing through books in the book store.   Lately I had been reading books in digital form, however,  this drama made me want to read a real book.  A book where I can turn down the paper edge, flip back and forward through the pages and smell the ink.  This drama evoked all those fond memories of holding an actual book in my hands.  Thank you for stirring up many fond memories.

Thank you writer, I do not have any criticisms of your writing, the plot was well thought out from the opening to the last scenes.  I loved your metaphors and poems.  The thoughts and poems at the end of each episode were lovely and sweet, but thought provoking.

Thank you director, you were an asset to the writer, your direction was spot on.

Thank you actors, I laughed with you, smiled, sighed, and cried with you.  Great job all.  You should be proud of your work.

    Job well done!

I shared a wonderful eight weeks with you guys, it was a joy reading and responding to your posts.  I hope to see you again soon...posting on another drama.

I see a theme in INTEGRITY here and the struggle to have that, our characters are not perfect:

    - I like how EH doesn’t abuse his power to help DY totally with the competitions,

    - or that DY acknowledges her less than truthful application is wrong and she should pack up even though she has done good work

    - or Ms.Go taking DY’s idea as her own and not acknowledging it but the line is so gray here also...

(I can’t think of anymore for now)

Yet having integrity doesn’t come easy. It is always easier to lie. Sometimes truth is hard to keep like what’s happening with author Kang...which is also the question of whether was it right to do so or not? These are hard questions to ponder upon and we get to glimpse that internal struggle of the characters in this drama.

    @Fenxia Tan

I agree with your point about integrity.  However, as you pointed out Ms. Go took DY's idea as her own and would not allow DY's name to be included in a book that she worked on and came up with the cover design.  Based on those examples, I think that Ms. Go should have been the last person to use the integrity card.  Did she not lie to her ex about being married?  I have worked as a temporary, which I believe is similar to a contract worker and the only criteria I needed (other than a high school diploma, any necessary certification and pass any relevant tests) was the skills necessary to do the job I was contracted for.  If the position did not require a college degree, than the fact that I did not list all of my educational background was not an integrity issue.  I think Ms. Go is a hypocrite.  Once she got DY fired she then gave her a reference for a small publishing house that does not seem to be above board (don't pay their bills and dodge contractors).  The office is in a disarray and there isn't any organization.  As I stated before, Ms. Go saw DY as a threat.  I believe that she under estimated DY and she will get the office running as it should.   I am glad that the writer chose to show how much the staff misses DY and her contributions to their team and office.

Side bar:  Speaking of integrity, the young lady set DY up, because as conscientious as DY is, if DY was asked to cancel the order, she would have.  It was sad that no one spoke up for DY, she was right at that point to resign.  Once  the young lady was able to get away with it, whenever something went wrong, DY would have been blamed for it.  Integrity has many faces, one of them is speaking up when you know something is not right or someone is being treated unfairly.

    @sgfan

Lol! Those lovey-dovey scenes made me cringe too. That was some major outpour of affection!

I've been rooting for CEH and KDY's happily-ever-after from ep 1. But somehow I'm not feeling their chemistry as a couple now that they are together. How do I put this... a lack of a certain presence together? (I am so ready to dodge some bullets haha) Don't get me wrong, I love them. Perhaps my expectations were high to begin with. I am thinking that their relationship transition could've been written better; with a lesser push from CEH, make KDY a little less dense to allow her to realise her own feelings.

You make some valid points about the transition and CEH.  CEH only pushed because he had some serious competition.  It was I might lose her again push.

Perhaps you are not feeling their chemistry because they are very familiar to each other and have been loving each other for a long time, she was in denial and Eun-ho did not want a rejection.  Therefore, their love is not like "new love", it is comfortable.  It is I have your back and you have mine love.  It is a two of us against the world love, not an exciting we are learning and exploring each other love.  Therefore, the chemistry would feel different.

I think their day off was cute, I loved it.

  16. My thoughts from episode 13.  I actually cried when Dan-yi explained to the president why she did not include her college and employment at an advertising agency on her resume and asked him to reconsider.  It was well acted.  As I sat watching that scene, I felt something wet on my face and realized that I was crying.  I am a woman in the work force, and know the barriers and hurdles many of us face.  Men get married, become parents and never have to worry about leaving the workforce; however, if a woman chooses to stay home with her child/children, she has a tough time re-entering the workforce.  I understand that in certain fields trends and norms change rapidly, however, it is sad to know that in many cases, if a woman want to be successful and move up in her field, she must sacrifice her happiness as Ms. Go did. (I will discuss that fly-by-night, publishing company Ms Go recommended to Dan-yi some other time.)  Even if Dan-yi could not re-inter the advertising/marketing field at the same level as when she left, I am sure that she could have been hired in a lower position where she could be brought up to speed.

International Women's Day was March 8, and I felt scene was an acknowledgment to women everywhere; our achievements, our struggles and our tenacity.    Thank you writer.

I love this show, not just Eun-ho and Dan-yi, (their day off was so cute...loved it,) but all the couples and pairings.  The last two episodes engaged most of my emotions, I laughed, I cried and I sighed.  The entire cast are doing a first class job and the writing and directing are right on point.  I cannot wait for Saturdays and Sundays to watch this drama... I am really going to miss all of the characters once this drama is over.

Maybe in the next episode we would know what her true intention. It seems CEH have so much mystery, he have so much pain who no one couldn't guess.maybe he will find out who is SJ and his relationship with the writer and him.

@Yana Mujay I had to laugh that you couldn't spell my name correctly (bebe =baby / bisous =kisses, in French)

Yes, sticking to the rules and regulations is as such a good thing, but in my opinion she only uses the rules for her own advantages. Actually, she asked DY to take care of her own clothes (send these to the cleaning store) which has nothing to do with the company. KDY could have refused, it is not her job to take care of Ms. Go's clothes but she did not because she was afraid of losing her job. She also was in no position to refuse indicating that Ms. Go was abusing her position. This example proves to me that she doesn't stick to the rules per se, it is just when it helps her. Moreover, she shows a lack of flexibility like CEH pointed out earlier. If everyone just does what he/she is supposed to do, then there is no team work, no help. Besides this undermines the motivation. Their commitment will decrease, people will stop to put any effort

I do not know the employment laws and regulations  in South Korea; however, in the United States, Ms. Go's friend would not have given her Dan-Yi's resume, it would have been against the law.  She also, would not have been able to share personal information with her.  If she did, as she did informally, Ms. Go's friend would not have given her what is considered confidential information from her company's personnel records. (We already know that the friend is bias against Dan-Yi when she said, just fire her...why?) Here in the US, when another company/organization requests information on a potential hire, the only thing the company can tell them is if the person worked there, how long and their salary information.  Okay, Ms. Go was given a tip "off the record" she would have had to do her own research to verify what her friend told her, then she could have acted on it.

In the US, not including full educational and employment history is not an offense that could get one fired, especially as a contract worker.  Where Ms. Go had the law on her side is that Dan-Yi is a contract worker and; therefore, her contract could be terminated at any time.  Eun-Ho and Dan-Yi both know that a contract worker is a temporary position and can be terminate at will. That is why Eun-Ho could not stop it.  I hope things get so chaotic in the office that everyone start complaining about Ms. Go, terminating Dan-Yi and question her reasoning.

In Ms. Go's mind, Dan-Yi is a threat, that is why she is terminating her contract.  It is not the case that Dan-Yi's services aren't required any longer, Dan-Yi goes above and beyond and everyone relies on her.  It's that Ms. Go sees Dan-Yi as a potential rival and feels she can replace her in the future.  Therefore, get rid of the threat now.  I feel that Dan-Yi will be fine.  She has a stable place to stay and gets some money from her ex-husband; therefore, she circumstances aren't as bleak as they were in the beginning.  Since Dan-Yi has proven herself at the company, I think she will be a shoo-in for a permanent position once she reapplies.

    @Yana Mujay

Since Dani-YA is a contract worker, letting her go, because she did not over exaggerate her education, was a decision that Ms. Go did not have to make.   If Ms. Go thought that she was doing it because it was morally right, then she should have spoken to Dani-Ya directly.  Part of my problem with this dismissal is because Ms. Go's friend told her why Dani-Ya probably did not include her credentials;  Dan-Yi was  out of the workforce for a while and it was hard getting a job.  If Ms. Go had any empathy at all, knowing this, she would not have let her go.  If she thought that she had to, then Ms Go should have told Dani-Ya herself and not have Eun-Ho do it.

Romance Is A Bonus Book" Ep. 12

Lee Jong Suk & Lee na Young

    WE WERE HOLDING HANDS

That night, we kept holding hands and walking.
We shared a goldfish bun with one hand even though it was very uncomfortable.
As if we had only just found the puzzle piece that we had been looking for so long,
As if we had never been apart from the beginning and were one body.
It was an ordinary, and yet romantic, night.

The thing is they were holding hands before, Dan-Yi just would not acknowledge her feelings.  Eun-ho is the most important person to her, and she is afraid if their relationship goes wrong, she cannot lean on him any longer. I can understand her hesitation, and I love the way their relationship is blooming.  It is so cute.  I love the phase "...as if we had only just found the puzzle piece that we had been looking for for so long.....It was an ordinary, and yet romantic, night."  Aah

So, it's not that she's a stickler for the rules that is the problem, but that she's so petty about things. She's a bitter person, and it seeps through. I hope she finds something which makes her happy because her life and her work are clearly not enough for her after all.

You and everyone who thinks that Ms. Go is petty are correct.  She is a bitter person, she has no love life, picking up someone in the club is not a love life, she has no real friends, and she is insecure in her position. She gave up on being happy for what, a career?  Her intended husband moved on got married and has three sons.  Although he quit his high paying job and failed at business, he has a positive attitude about life.  Ms. Go chose a career and she is miserable and lonely. A job title cannot keep you warm at night or comfort you when you have a problem.  I am not going to say she is evil, but I am saying that she needs to get a life outside of the publishing company.  She needs to make some friends, and find someone to love.

I still think that she stole the Dan-Yi's slogan/Blurb.

  20. I have not read all of the comments concerning Dan-I and her daughter or about Ms. Go; however, I have a take on the two topics,  I hope I am not wasting anyone's time by repeating what has already been discussed.

    Dan-Yi's daughter

Dan-Yi daughter is away at school, however, we do not know the circumstances of her being away.  We do not know if the daughter won a scholarship to this school or someone sponsored her.  Since Dan-Yi was homeless, it was the best decision for her daughter to go away and not have to face homelessness also.

Dan-Yi spoke to her daughter once when she was having a hard time  Dan-Yi also mentioned that she wanted to excel in at work because she wanted to be a role model to her daughter.  Since Dan-Yi's family is not the focus of this drama, I did not expect the daughter to be featured prominently or become a major plot line.  Until the last episode, we did not know that Ms, Seo had a child.  One of the points made in this drama is that hard to be a working mother because the prevailing attitude about career women.

    Ms. Go

Ms. Go has been down on Dan-Yi from the beginning.  Before she knew that Dan-Yi was married; it was as if she looked down on Dan-Yi for not having a college degree, but wanting excel become an integral part of the publishing house.   Ms. Go made Dan-i do menial tasks as if to say, stay in your place, do not overreach, do not think you can become anything more than being a gopher because you did not make the sacrifices (college, not getting married.) as I did.  Now that she knows that Dan-i has a college background and has won awards, she feels threatened, because, although Dan-i did not reveal her background, she has already brought many new ideas to the table and they've been successful.  Dan-Yi did not reveal her entire educational and professional background because she had already experienced the difficulty of returning to the workplace with her credentials,  therefore, she chose to only list her high school diploma.  The object was to get a job.  Once she got her foot in the door, her plan was to work hard, contribute, become essential to the company  and perhaps they will retain her permanently.

In the real world, it is hard for a woman, after being out of the workforce for a period of time to return especially to a position comparable to the one she left.  If a woman chooses to stay home with her children until they get older she is less less likely to reach her professional potential. Many employers want to see a continuous work history, not realizing that stay at home mothers have so much to offer.  It is unfortunate that one of the most important tasks mothers can do, (be a housewife) is under valued.

Yes, we have the budding, sweet romance, :D but this drama also highlights other issues.  There is Ji Yool, a young woman who, until recently, only looked at her position as something she had to do until she found a husband to take care of her.  Then there is her mother always forcing blind dates on her, reinforcing the opinion that finding a husband is the most important thing she can do.  Her mother has not encouraged Ji-Yool to become successful in the working world because success for a woman is landing a good husband.  Ms. Seo, who was married (now divorced); however, many did not know that she was married and who she was married to.  When her son became sick, she felt as if she could not say, I cannot make it today because my son is sick, she had to say that she was in an accident.  I think all these story lines are a commentary on women in the work place.  In the workplace a woman has to be a b*&!h, hard nosed, can't show any weakness, such as having to take off for a sick child, send their child away, or not getting married in order to succeed.

Overall, I love this drama and the budding romance between Eun Ho and Dan-Yi...It makes me smile and my heart sing.

  21. I love this drama.  I watched episode 10 last night and the kiss was short and very sweet and my response was AHHH.  I love all the characters in this drama, all the main characters have a back story which makes this drama a joy to watch.  Da Ni, even if she unaware of it, is already in love with Eun Ho.  She feels that because he is her beloved friend who is always there for her, he is off limits as a love interest.  She cannot fathom why he would be interested in her knowing her history.

They are soulmates, and are so comfortable around each other. She claims that she does not see him as a man; however, I would wager that after that sweet kiss, she will recognize that he is definitely a man.

I believe the screenwriter is the same one who wrote, I Need Romance.  I loved those dramas because they were aimed at an adult audience.  While I like watching young love, (high school), I am finding that dramas with matures characters and/or themes are appealing to me more.

Since we know that JSJ's password is 04 23 for the door (forbidden room), it clearly outlines that JSJ's life is linked to the writer. The number is the title of his last book. So my theory is that JSJ believes that he could be his son which could be true. JSJ could have been raised by his mother (single mother) which would explain why JSJ is so close to his mother and is not bothered by DY's status: divorcee with a child as he had a similar past.

I am happy to see you that you've joined this thread.  I look forward to your analysis and insight.

I like your theory, about JSJ believing that he could be the author's son...interesting.

As for CEH. JSJ even told CEH in the car that he would treat KDY like his sister which showed that for an outsider, CEH acts like a brother. He doesn't seem to cross the line. However, once they are alone, we see that CEH and KDY can't help themselves and act like "lovers" (see the scene at the restaurant, later how KDY grabbed his hands aso).

In the end, CEH and KDY are too rational which explains why CEH has never acted like a man in front of her. Both are too guarded, afraid of crossing the line for real.

What caught my attention is that JSJ met SHR and they had an interesting interaction. So it looks like the writer won't use the jealousy cliche. I have more inclined to believe that thanks to SHR and JSJ as outsiders and witnesses, CEH and KDY will be able to realize their love for each other. SHR will meet JSJ alone and this is important.

To conclude, one of them have to make the first move. CEH will be forced to do it.

@avondale16 The moon symbolizes woman, this metaphor is often used in literature and poetry. The reason is simple: the lunar cycle is 28 days which correspond to the length of menstruation: 28-30 days. On the other hand, the sun has always been associated to men... it is the symbol for kings. The moon is beautiful = the woman is beautiful, he expresses his love and admiration indirectly. Moreover by using such a natural element, the poet underlines the simplicity and naturalness of his love for the woman. The message is quite subtle. As for the bookshop, it clearly shows JSJ's closeness and gentleness to women in general. Notice that he takes care of his mother... so this underlines his sensitive side. The shop looks very intimate... it was as if it was a temple, a sacred place. Bringing her there outlined how much he already treasures her.

I agree with you that they act as lovers when alone. I loved their day out (date).  CEH tried to give KDY a hint, by pulling his hand away from her and asking what is this.  At that time KDY really did not get it; lovers walk holding hands.   Since KDY found out that SHR likes CEH,  I think is one of the reason's that KDY has buried her feelings towards CEH.  KDY feels that SHR is more worthy of CEH than she is.  After all, she is divorced with a child.

Also thank you giving us an insight into the symbolism of the moon.  The theory behind the moon metaphor makes sense.  Again thank you.

  23. Boyfriend/Encounter was one of the best K Rom-dramas I have watched.  Except for the brief break-up, I have nothing but good feelings about this drama.  The writing, directing, production and acting was all superb.  This drama left me feeling good and a smile on my face.  All the characters, except the mother-in-law redeemed themselves at the end.  The characters had depth.  I liked the fact that there wasn't any over-the-top characters hollering, hitting or throwing things.  All of the characters had dignity and a graciousness about them. Although I may not have like their actions,  the characters were not disagreeable to the point that I actually disliked them.  The mother-in-law came the closest being disliked, and even she had dignity.  I wish more K-dramas would look at the success of Encounter and take note.

I enjoyed watching the drama with all of you.  Your insights and analysis were thought provoking.  I've had some ah-ha moments, laughs and a few difference of opinions; however, it made watching Encounter even more enjoyable. Each week, I could not wait to read the posts.

I congratulate the actors, the writer, and crew for a beautiful love story.  Thank you Song Hye-Kyo and Park Bo-Gum for portraying your characters realistically.  You should be proud of your achievements.

If I want to introduce anyone to Korean dramas, this will be my first choice.

I hope to see you all at another K-drama.

Oh well, trust me, the Asian culture is respect the elderly. I support that fully. One has to respect one's parents.

Yet we've seen how a family bond is broken when things get out of hand, in reality.

@jl08I am older; therefore, respecting the elderly and one's parents was a given when I was growing up.   One of the things I love about the Asian culture is their respect for their elderly.  However, I think sometimes parents take advantage of the respect their children have for them and become controlling and/or overbearing.  My mother gave me advice about the people around me, both relationships and friends and she was right in most cases; however, she did it in such a way that it left the final decision up to me.  I appreciated her wisdom and I would weigh her concerns against what I knew and come to my own decision.  My mother is now gone, and many days, I wish that I could seek her wisdom; however, thankfully, she left me with enough knowledge and guidelines to make (in most cases) the right choices.  I think in all cultures, mothers have a problem in letting their sons go.  I think it has a lot to do with the sons giving the love and attention they used to give to their mothers to another woman.

I have not watched the last two episodes yet; however, I understand there is a happy ending and JH's mother did the right thing.  :D

I loved this drama, the writing was superb.  The writer took an everyday subject, meeting and falling in love, and made it something wonderful, sometimes heart-wrenching, and most importantly a joy to watch.  For me it made me reminisce about the beauty of new love and the joy I felt when I realized this is the person for me.  This is it!  I cannot write enough great things about the actors abilities, their performance were spot on.  They made you feel the joy, the hesitancy, the pain, and the beauty of falling and being in love.  Great job all.

I will return to this post once I have watched the last two episodes.
